Dr. Robinson is pictured in the photo (above right) with TCMS President, Todd Brockman, M.D. Dr. Brockman said, “Our state association will be well served under the leadership of Dr. Robinson, who is keenly aware of the important issues we are facing in organized medicine”. Pictured (below right) are George Monks, M.D. who serves as the Vice Speaker of the OSMA House of Delegates and Jason Miner, MSIII, the OU medical student representative on the TCMS Board of Directors. Dr. Monks commended Jason and fourth year OU medical student Chris Sudduth for attending the meeting and their effort to promote involvement of other medical students. 918-743-6184 The TCMS Foundation Scholarship Board is now accepting applications for the 2012 academic year. The TCMS Scholarship Board is interested in cultivating physician leaders of the future. Since the Scholarship Program was initiated 1220 medical students have received awards totaling $1,097,350.00. Project TCMS The Tulsa Dream Center and Good Samaritan are the safety net clinics working with Project TCMS to pilot the program. 24 TCMS physician specialists have volunteered to see Project TCMS referrals. The following hospitals have confirmed their participation in the program: Oklahoma Surgical Society, Hillcrest Medical Center, Hillcrest South (formerly Southcrest) and Tulsa Spine and Specialty Hospital. The goal of Project TCMS is to coordinate 100 referrals in 2012. For more information about the program, contact Program Manager Kim Morris at 918-236-3442, 918-706-5707 or [email protected]. Email: [email protected] Congratulations to TCMS Member George Prothro, M.D. who was recently featured in the Washington University Alumni Newsletter for his contribution to the Tulsa County Recycled Medication Program. This tremendously successful program was the brainchild of Dr. Prothro and has been recognized with the Presidential Daily Point of Light Award in 2007 and with the Community Health Champion and Rodney L. Huey Memorial Champion of Oklahoma Health Award in 2009. The program was implemented in 2004 and the wholesale value of medications recycled and distributed at no charge to qualified Tulsa County residents will reach $10 million in 2012. This program demonstrates one of many ways that Dr. Prothro’s passion to give back benefits others. IN MEMORIAM Simon A. Levit, M.D. April 22, 2012 President’s Letter The OSMA has just completed its 106th Annual Meeting and I would consider it to be a great success. We were able to use our own facility in the manner in which it was designed, thereby saving a significant amount of money. We will have an exact number in a week or two. I thought the building functioned extremely well and my hat is off to the OSMA staff who did an outstanding job. I want to digress a minute from the meeting in regard to the building. Most of you are aware of the rather protracted legal proceedings involving the proper completion of the building. A settlement has been reached and many of the problems have already been rectified. The building committee may not be so sanguine, but I see the end in sight at a cost just about what we expected. We owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to the building committee, including our own Dr. Lee Schoeffler and the Chair, Dr. Bud Oehlert. They have had no doubt countless sleep deficient nights over the span of what became a 5 year project. It ought to be known as the Schoeffler/Oehlert Headquarters Building in my opinion. Speaking of hard working, our own Past-President Dr. George Caldwell has completed his very successful year as OSMA President. I’m certain his phone began ringing the Monday after his Inaugural and hasn’t stopped in the 365 days since. When you see George, shake his hand. He is the epitome of tireless. If you know his self deprecating manner, you know that George might turn this around to tiresome, but we’re not buying it George. You did a magnificent job. Dr George Monks was re-elected as Vice-chair of the House of Delegates, and it will be in excellent hands when he ascends to Chair. Dr Kevin Taubman was elected as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees and I’m happy it will be awhile before he can become Chair so that I won’t look quite so dull in comparison. We achieved our goal of returning Dr. Jenny Boyer as an Alternate AMA Delegate from our Caucus. We are so fortunate that Dr. Boyer’s career path brought her to Tulsa and that she sits on our Board of Directors. I want to thank all of our Delegates who gave of their weekend and helped make this happen. I also want to thank Mona Wright for all of her preparation and support. Finally, I was given a 4 year ticket to the OMSA Executive Committee, starting as Vice President in 2012-13. I would like to extend my thanks to both the TCMS and OSMA Nominating Committees for their confidence. I will try to live up to the standards set by Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Schoeffler and all the other Tulsa physicians who have held office at the OSMA. P.S. Please make plans to bring your spouse to the membership meeting May 17th. It will be a special evening. Carl Hook, M.D., President and CEO of PLICO announced at the OSMA Annual Meeting that in 2012 PLICO will advance the state of educational programming and dialogue by hosting EXPLORE: Oklahoma Healthcare Summit, a conference for physicians, practice managers, healthcare administrators and other providers.
