Nearly six months since our return, the entire experience sometimes seems surreal. We actually lived in Africa! We went because this tremendous yet scary opportunity was dropped in our laps and we felt God leading us to break out of our comfort zone. Furthermore, we were curious about what my brother Jeff and his family had experienced over their six years in Ouaga. When Jeff died unexpectedly in September 2011 this became more significant as we grieved with his friends and church in Ouaga. In Ouaga, at the International School of Ouagadougou, we worked with students from around the world. Among our good friends and former students now are people from nearly every continent. Students were children of politicians, embassy workers, missionaries, doctors, wealthy business owners, and poor rural farmers (if they earned a scholarship). I even had the rare opportunity to teach African Studies and Comparative Politics to the Grade 10 daughter of President Blaise Campaore, long-time leader of Burkina Faso. There were advantages and disadvantages to this adventure. We could not have prepared ourselves enough for the growth each of us experienced. But it was not always easy. Commonplace items were not as easy to find as they are here. We had to adjust to boiling and filtering our water, living in a guarded, walled compound, and dealing with people on the street trying to sell us anything and everything. I still marvel at being able to walk from my car to a store in Leamington without someone trying to sell me a magazine, bathroom scale, or board game. I also appreciate being able to speak to most people in my native tongue. We had the disadvantage of leaving friends, families, church, home and jobs for two years. Some friends moved away, some family members died and life in Leamington moved on without us. Coming home has been strange and sometimes difficult. We’re in the same home, back to the same routine but we are not the same. Life seems fast-paced; we regularly feel like we have missed out on something. At the same time, we miss our new friendships from all over the world. We were so blessed with so much there but are glad to be back among friends in Canada. ~Joel Warkentin (‘91) Top Photo: Joel and Andrea with children Kathe and Micah in Banfora, Burkina Faso Page 2 Back Row: Paul Warkentin, Arthur Driedger, Arthur Epp, Edmund Tiessen, Rudy Neufeld Middle: Helen Konrad, Laura Konrad, Carolyn Driedger, Marlene Toews, Linda Derksen, Irma Cornies Front Row: Erna Cornies, Helen Hildebrand, Agnes Martens, Rita Braun, Karen Konrad “Our four years spent as students at UMEI were good times because they created for us a host of wonderful friends and memories. I think we have done quite well in following Christ’s command to serve one another. I was amazed after compiling a long list of church related activities in which members of our class have been involved. I am also convinced that UMEI has played a part in that aspect of our lives, as it continues to do in the lives of students today; that is, fostering the notion that we are on this earth for more reasons than just selfish pursuits of personal comfort and achievement. We are grateful for the time we were able to spend in this place, for the learning that we received here, for the friendships created during those four years, and for the legacy that UMEI leaves in the lives of all its graduates.” ~Paul Warkentin, Class of ‘63 Page 3 Back Row: Stephanie Konrad, Steve Ferguson, Nancy Driedger, Jim Toews, Anne-Marie Koop, Jim Martinho, Irene Epp Front Row: Paula Thiessen, Jennifer Tiessen, Denise Berg, Rachel Clarke “UMEI was ..is.. and still will be a fantastic place to grow as young adults. The skills taught and the lasting friendships that you have will follow you throughout your life! Enjoy this day and good luck in the future!” ~Jennifer (Tiessen) Driedger & Nancy (Driedger) Gualtieri, ,,,Class of ‘88 UMEI alumni, typical of all high school grads, disperse and scatter into the world. Many settle in nearby communities, others venture farther afield and some are quite at home in faraway parts of the world. Then there are those grads who actually return to UMEI….to teach! Henry W. Epp (’56) - The First Alumnus to Teach at UMEI Photo: Henry and Irene Epp Upon graduating from UMEI, I returned to Niagara, completed Grade 13 and enrolled at McMaster University, receiving my Science degree in 1961. During my final year a UMEI school board member asked me to consider teaching at UMEI. I agreed and began in fall 1961, becoming the first of many UMEI alumni to return as teachers. I was pleased to be a colleague of my former teachers, Mr. Peter Sawatzky and Rev. Jacob Penner, who now mentored me. When children came along, Irene and I moved back to Niagara-on-the-Lake where I taught science and one class of German. After four years I was accepted by CIDA, a Canadian foreign aid agency, to teach in Ghana, West Africa. I taught at the Advanced Teacher Training College (Ghana University of Education). We spent three wonderful years there before returning to Canada. I taught Science in Grimsby and soon became Head of the Science Department. After teaching for 33 years, I retired in 1994 and now enjoy a quiet life with travelling and gardening. We recently returned to Ghana for a three week visit. The four years teaching at UMEI remain the most memorable and enjoyable years of my career. A thought struck me recently: the first students I taught at UMEI are now approaching seventy years of age! How time flies! While attending the 50th anniversary of my Class of ’56 and the graduation dinner of the class of 2006, I met three young ladies who were looking at pictures of their mothers who were my students in the early sixties. I asked them if they were graduating this year. They laughed and said, “Our daughters are in the graduating class of 2006”. So easily we grow oblivious to the rapid change of time. Autumn Campaign 2013 Thank you to all who have already supported this year’s Annual Autumn Campaign. To date just over $58,495 has been received which is about 73% of the goal. Through its entire history, tuition has varied between 25% and 40% of operating expenses. If you were a student or the parents of a student at any time in UMEI’s history, the supporting community paid the bulk of the costs to educate you/your child. This mechanism is truly a tenet of Anabaptist faith at work; namely, the community supporting one another. It’s not too late to support this year’s campaign. We invite you to help repay the community support that you received as a student by supporting today’s community efforts to financially support the school. Page 5 Over the years, at least 45 grads have come back to join the staff of the School on the Sixth. The Latest Alumni to Return to UMEI to Teach: Wesley Shuttleworth (‘08) I graduated from UMEI in 2008; however, I never truly left. Throughout my university time pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Honours Music Education from Wilfrid Laurier University and then a Bachelor Education from University of Windsor, I frequently came back to the school to assist with teaching in the music classroom. The time I spent in the classroom at UMEI as an assistant teacher helped to affirm my hope that teaching was what I wanted to do with my life. As my studies continued my aim was always to come back to UMEI to teach music. This was due in no small part to the influence that Paul Dueck, my close friend and mentor, had on me when he was my music teacher at UMEI. My aim in the classroom is to spread and infect (for lack of a better word) students with my own passion for music through the formal study and making of music. This is done not only in the choir and instrumental class, but also through music chapels, lunch hour jam sessions, coffee houses, and various other activities. My hope is also that I can, in some way, reflect the inner working of Jesus Christ in my life through my actions and words with these students so that they can also come to know the great truth and love of Christ, and in the end have these students do the same outside of our community. Alyssa Epp (‘07) When I graduated from UMEI, I didn’t think that I’d return six short years later, particularly not in time to teach my baby sister Grade Eleven French. Admittedly, I didn’t stray too far away from the School on the Sixth. Aside from a semester exchange in Hobart, Tasmania, I completed my Bachelor of Music, minoring in French, at the University of Windsor. After a transformative year as artistic director of a Windsor theatre company, I stayed in Windsor and enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program. I’ve always enjoyed languages, as evidenced by my love of classical voice, particularly in any language other than English. I continue to be active as a member of the Soli Deo Gloria Singers and a member of Leamington United Mennonite Church. Currently, I am enjoying teaching at UMEI and Academie Ste. Cecile as well as teaching voice lessons in the community. Page 6 Alumni Profile _________ Peppy and Rich with daughters Rachel and Sarah Greetings from St. Louis, Missouri. Although I grew up in the Leamington area, our family moved to St. Thomas where I attended Grade 9 and 10. When we moved back, it was a relatively easy decision to go to UMEI for grade 11 and 12, despite the fact that I had to now pay tuition and buy text books. I watched the meager money I earned working on farms disappear into the UMEI coffers. However, I looked forward to going to a school where I already knew many of the students and where the Willms/Mathies name was already well-respected and reflected a high degree of mediocrity. After graduating, (the only time in my life I saw my parents cry, in relief), I went to University of Waterloo and Conrad Grebel College for higher education and to remove myself from being surrounded by tomatoes. University was a great experience. The most profound aspect was a dramatic change of my UMEI nickname, Shorty, to my Grebel, and current nickname, Cheeze. I felt it was a sign of my times at UMEI that my nickname, for a guy that was 6'4", was the creatively original "Shorty”. My History degree with a minor in Peace and Conflict Studies led to a lot of "What are you going to do with that?" kind of questions. My response: Mennonite Voluntary Service in St. Louis with the local Mennonite church and the peace and justice ministry they were establishing. There were many great experiences, the most profound being meeting and falling in love with my wife, Peppy, and settling in St. Louis. While applying for a work visa, I worked with a group from our Mennonite community to establish a Ten Thousand Villages-type store in St. Louis. I provided volunteer leadership in getting it going and finally worked myself into the paid position I still have today. We have 3 Fair Trade stores in the area for which I am Executive Director. Peppy is in a leadership position at an agency for special needs children. Rachel, our older daughter, married and living in Austin, TX, is a school psychologist. She is expecting her first child, our first grandchild, in May 2014. Sarah works with autistic high schoolers; she and I are season ticket holders with the St. Louis Blues. Let's go, Blues! Looking back on those 2 years at UMEI, I remember mostly good times, mostly good teachers, and some good friendships. My illusionary professional basketball career came to a crushing halt (it’s hard to improve when you play in a gym that has a 14" high ceiling…it’s even harder to improve when you're not very good to begin with), but ultimately I think I, and my fellow classmates, received a pretty decent education and hopefully an openness to explore the world around us. Page 4 Lightning On Line: Quilt Unveiling Representatives from our top LOL supporters (Uni-Fab, MSCU, and Highline Mushrooms) with Dave Epp, Charlene Epp (Quilter), and Jane Wiens stand in front of the commemorative quilt. On Sunday, September 8, 2013 the Lightning on Line Solar Project commemorative quilt was unveiled as a celebration of this exciting project. The system produces electricity in an environmentally friendly manner under Ontario’s Feed in Tariff Green Energy Program and creates a long-term revenue stream for the school. 349 solar panels were installed on the roofs of the gymnasium and chapel and have been successfully producing electricity since February 6, 2013. The ambitious goal to fund this project was $500,000 and to date we have received an incredible $452,000 in donations and pledges from supporters, alumni and businesses. As a lasting memory of this project and to thank our many generous supporters, a beautiful quilt was crafted by Charlene Epp using drawings by Carl Wiens (’80) and is now on display in the auditorium. It features six panels which highlight six important aspects of UMEI: the campus which also serves as our community centre, academics, music, sports, peace and community. The unveiling coincided with the annual Fish Fry lunch. UMEI is extremely thankful to the donors, committees and volunteers who made this project possible. Perch is served to guests at the annual Fish Fry, one of our most popular fundraising lunches. Some of the community members who made the Lightning On Line project possible. Shop UMEI Update: Last year, our total profit was $38,500 which, compared to our peak year of 2010 at $52,156, is down considerably. I attribute this decline to credit cards giving a 4% cash rebate and WalMart coming to Leamington. However, it is still a great fundraiser and on behalf of UMEI, I thank the loyal supporters who use these grocery cards faithfully. Thank you again, Elfrieda (Konrad) Brown (‘66) Page 7 Marriages May 19, 2013 Shauna-Lee Konrad (’93) Prabo Dwight May 25, 2013 Craig Krueger (’03) Lindsay Oriet June 1, 2013 James Dyck (’06) Madeleine McKenna June 1, 2013 Jillian Balzer (‘11) Mathew Suta (’11) July 13, 2013 Len Janzen (’95) Ashley Bridgen July 20, 2013 Jennifer Klassen (‘10) Andrew McKeown August 17, 2013 Ben Wiens (‘09) Katelyn Kroeker (‘09) September 7, 2013 Richard Langeman (‘06) Jennifer Weber September 14, 2013 Kerri Epp (‘03) Mike Coppola September 21, 2013 Len Kroeker (‘84) Julie Mulhall October 12, 2013 Jenny Willms (‘04) Santino Melatti Births Coppola, Vince & Ann (Srigley) (’00) a daughter, Grace Rosa born October 15, 2012 Cook, Andrew (’04) & Linda (Taves) (’04) a daughter, Megan Elizabeth born May 30, 2013 Dault, Mark & Marla (Enns) (‘00) a son, Liam Jacob born April 2, 2013 Sawyer, Rich & Heidi (Omstead) (’03) a son, Nikolas Christopher born June 4, 2013 Weston, Jonathon & Alisha (Koop) Tiessen, Scott (‘93) & Natasha (‘06) a daughter, Brianna Jasmine a daughter, Serena Lynn born July 8, 2013 born May 5, 2013 Janzen, Jakob (’87) & Mary-Jo Fleming, Noah & Heather a son, William Jakob (Cornies) (’99) born June 28, 2013 a daughter, Ella Holly born on May 7, 2013 Schachowskoy, Mark (’94) & Lisa a daughter, Ruby Grace Fehr, David (’04) & Mallory born July 6, 2013 Derksen a daughter, Irelynn Mae Klassen, Kris (‘00) & Jennifer born into eternal life on May a son, Calvin Ellwood 19, 2013 born August 3, 2013 Lepp, Brad & Jana (Schmidt) (’97) Chris (‘01) & Sarah Overton a son, Sebastian Kayden a son, Theodore Christopher Schmidt born August 23, 2013 born May 17, 2013 Winter, Ben (‘05) & Sarah Dyck, Henry (’92) & Shannon a daughter, Aubrey Hannah a daughter, Hailey Nicole born November 3, 2013 born May 19, 2013 Ecker, Jason & Lindsey (‘00) Winter, Art (‘00) & Sue (Brown) a daughter, Chloe a son, Levi David Evangeline Kenneth born May 19, 2013 born November 19, 2013 In Memoriam John Klassen (’54), husband of Gladys, late of Nepean, ON, passed away on August 4, 2013. In conjunction with MCEC, the UMEI Board has decided to use this money to build enrolment. At the meeting, Charette commended UMEI for “meeting its mandate from the Church to partner with families and congregations in the mission of Christian education for our youth. By combining academic excellence while nurturing growth in character and faith, UMEI has developed a winning formula that benefits Mennonite Church Eastern Canada again and again. UMEI not only educates well, but also educates with purpose. Your legacy of developing peacemakers and faithful community members is a gift not only to the Church but to the world.” MCEC would like to encourage our community to match their generous gift with donations to our Foundation Fund. We are excited that commitments for approximately $42,500 in matching funds have already been received and we encourage others to consider making a donation. Now That’s a Commute! For decades parents have been bringing their children to UMEI at the beginning of the school day and picking them up when it is time to go home. For one parent, Jennifer (Price) Chaplyn ('87) and her daughter Emma, that 'commute' involved thousands of miles of air travel and a school 'day' that lasted three months! Why? The Chaplyn family lives in Australia. Because of her own experience at UMEI, Jennifer wanted her daughter to "learn and participate in a faith community where the goal of delivering a quality education matched the 'how' with the 'what' of learning and the role of community service was a central pillar of learning and living one's faith". She also wanted Emma to experience the 'non-Aussie' half of her history, in which UMEI plays a central role. And so for three months in the spring of 2013, Emma, hosted by the family of Paul ('85) and Jenny ('87) (Huebert) Enns, became immersed in the school community. She reflected, "I discovered more about faith and through that discovered more about myself, what I believe and what is important to me. I also discovered that I have a deep and profound love for Mennonite food, particularly Zweibach, Rollkuchen and Platz … I have another place to call my home." Page 9 Emma Chaplyn (Right) & Amanda Enns (Left) Thank you to all our generous supporters for the 2012/2013 school year! Anthony recently graduated from the University of Windsor with a degree majoring in English Language and Literature with a minor in Communication Studies. Jane recently retired from the UMEI Board of Directors after 9 years of service with 7 of those in the role of Chair. Planned Giving Why Give to UMEI? We all recognize how fortunate we have been. By God’s grace, we have gathered many gifts. We continuously show our gratitude for these gifts through stewardship – by giving of our time and resources during our lifetime. Estate planning provides the opportunity to make a final gesture of stewardship. What better place to make this gesture than UMEI – a school devoted to teaching young people to become lifelong stewards themselves. Your charitable gift to the UMEI, then, is the ultimate gift of stewardship – it is the gift that keeps on giving through future generations. Page 12
