The Seasons in Chianti / Le stagioni nel Chianti
16 April – 31 May 2014
Valvona & Crolla,19 Elm Row, Edinburgh
Monday to Thursday, 8.30am-5.30pm,
Friday & Saturday 8am-6pm.
Sunday,10.30am-3.30pm
The Italian Cultural Institute is very pleased to show Francesco
Franceschi’s exhibition Seasons in Chianti at Valvona & Crolla.
The exhibition includes 50 images, showing Siena countryside
photographed in different seasons in the course of eight years
while the artist stayed in Castellina in Chianti.
The images are extraordinary, stressing the metaphysical nature
hidden in Chiantishire. Images inspired by painting, neither
melancholic, nor exalted by exaggerated colours. It is a Chianti
that has been lived more than visited. During this period Valvona & Crolla will be offering Chianti tastings.

Dizionario delle collocazioni / Dictionary of Italian
Collocations by Paola Tiberii
Assotheatris presents All Home, Bed and Church
with Marina De Juli of The Fo Rame Theatre Company
Tuesday 13 May 2014, 6pm
Italian Cultural Institute, 82 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh
Written by Dario Fo and Franca Rame, Directed by Franca Rame
Friday 16 May 2014, 6.30-9pm, Summerhall, Edinburgh
The term collocazione (collocation)
refers to a familiar grouping of
words, especially words that
habitually appear together and
thereby convey meaning by
association. Some examples
are caffè forte (strong coffee),
lanciare un appello (to launch
an appeal), prestare attenzione
(to pay attention), delusione
amara (a bitter disappointment),
vittoria netta (a clear victory) etc.
The dictionary is an extremely
useful tool for non-native Italian
speakers for increasing vocabulary
and identifying the correct usage
of collocations which are always
difficult to master without such
a specific resource. This event will be in Italian
Free event but booking essential:
[email protected]
The show consists of a programme of comic-grotesque monologues
on the condition of women.
A Woman Alone: a woman who
has everything in her house,
who lives according to standards
set by television, but who lacks
the most important things – the
respect of her husband and her
self esteem.
Waking up: a piece which provokes laughter and reflection on
the range of emotions so long repressed by today’s women,
overwhelmed by the stresses and rhythms of everyday life, divided
between household and work, they are forced to endure.
The second part of the show is dedicated to the subject of sex,
treated variously in a hilarious Orgasm Lesson, and an ancient
jester-like story, full of humour, entitled La parpaja topola (The
Butterfly Mouse).
The performance will be preceded by a round table with Prof. Joseph Farrell,
Dr Donatella Fischer and Marina De Juli. Two books by Prof. Farrell will be
presented: Non è tempo di nostalgia Franca Rame con Joseph Farrell, and Dario
e Franca: la biografia della coppia Fo/Rame attraverso la storia italiana.
Tickets for all the events £7 / £5 concession
Performed in Italian with English surtitles

This story of a World War II romance in the Black Isle develops in a
gradual but lyrical manner as Janie (Phyllis Logan), a Scottish woman
married to a cold and remote man, starts an affair with Luigi
(Giovanni Mauriello), an Italian confined to Janie’s small community
until the war is over. Luigi has two other compatriots to keep him
company, but none of the Italians speak English, and life in exile is
lonely. Although the townspeople continue to distrust the Italians,
Luigi and Janie are kindred spirits, so when they meet, their mutual
need is unconsciously acknowledged and passions are ignited.
Running time 118 mins.

Thursday 10 July, 7.30pm, St Machar’s Cathedral, Aberdeen
Sunday 13 July 3pm, Òran Mór, Glasgow
These imaginative recitals from Scottish Opera celebrate the 200th

romanticism and full of the supernatural, Scott’s novels and poems
have been a well-mined source for generations of composers, and
have inspired over 80 operas. These intimate recitals features work
by Donizetti, Rossini and Bizet as well as Arthur Sullivan, of Gilbert
and Sullivan fame, and Scottish composer Hamish MacCunn.
Visiting four of Scotland’s most singular and beautiful venues,
including The Hub in Edinburgh, St Machar’s Cathedral in Aberdeen
& Òran Mór in Glasgow, a stellar line-up brings the programme to
life. The tour also includes a recital at Scott’s own home, Abbotsford
House, on Monday 7 July – the anniversary of the publication of

An embarrassment of riches in the way of lyrical, folk-inflected
melodies, bright open harmonies and surging rhythmic energy

The Milanese stride, ragtime and boogie-woogie pianist returns
after his sensational Edinburgh debut last year. Tonight’s concert

mainstay of Woody Allen’s New Orleans Jazz Band for the past decade.
Now in its third incarnation, Sardinian saxophonist Enzo Favata is
joined by Scottish pianist Dave Milligan and trumpeter Colin Steele

Surely one of the world’s greatest jazz pianists. The Roman maestro
plays with extraordinary passion, sensitivity and astonishing invention
merging classical music with jazz improvisation. Playing solo, he
takes the music of Scarlatti, Handel, Bach, Schumann and Debussy
as a starting point and he invests his
interpretations with extraordinary passion
and emotional energy. Intensely beautiful

Germano Ovani & Martina Peluso
Wed 30 July – Sat 30 August
Scottish Storytelling Centre, 43-45 High Street, EH1 1SR
Opening time: 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday,
& Sundays 12noon-6pm
Two talented Italian illustrators Germano Ovani & Martina Peluso
will be exhibiting for the first time at the Scottish Storytelling Centre.
The Dandelion by Germano Ovani
Their exhibition draws on the amazing power of drawing, one of
the first forms of expressions we all experience. So doing, Martina
and Germano’s drawings will get youngers to explore the magical
world of books, bringing back to their childhood those who have
only apparently lost their ability to dream.
Germano Ovani’s artistic training took place mainly in Urbino (Italy) where he
studied Art at the School of Art, and Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts. In
1997 he began to be interested in the illustration of children’s books. After
obtaining his first commissions from various Italian publishers, in 1999 he started
an MA dedicated to the Illustration of Children’s Books at The University of Wales,
Aberystwyth.
Martina Peluso has studied printing art at the Institute of Art in Naples and
she has attended courses of illustration at Sarmede and Pavia. In 2006 at the
Carampa Circus in Madrid she set up her first personal exhibition: Circus. In 2007
she exhibited her work at Assisi, Italy, called ’The Hymn of the Creatures, images
of a world of grace’; it was on exhibition at the museum of St. Damiano.
Entry to the Centre is free – just drop in!
During the exhibition we shall have “Meet the Artist”
and a series of workshops with children.
