The following change to the Constitution of the Italian American Club of Livonia will be brought before the general membership of the Club at the Annual meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 18, 2016. CURRENT CONSTITUTION – ARTICLE III, SECTION 4 (Membership) reads as follows: In the case of death or divorce of a lifetime member, where the spouse is not of Italian descent, the non-Italian spouse becomes an Honarary Lifetime Member, effective as of the date of the divorce decree or death, as applicable. In the event the non-Italian spouse remarries a person who is not Italian, he or she retains his/her honorary membership, but the new spouse and his or her Family are not considered to be “eligible family members” as that term is defined in Article III, Section 6. If the non-Italian spouse remarries a person of Italian decent, the new spouse can apply for a Lifetime Membership at a reduced rate of 50% percent of the then applicable rate. PROPOSED CHANGE – ARTICLE III, SECTION 4 (Membership): In the case of death or divorce of a lifetime member, where the spouse is not of Italian descent, the non-Italian spouse retains his/her full Lifetime Membership with all rights and privileges, effective as of the date of the divorce decree or death, as applicable. In the event the non-Italian spouse remarries a person who is not Italian, he or she retains his/her full Lifetime Membership, but the new spouse and his or her Family are not considered to be “eligible family members” as that term is defined in Article III, Section 6. If the non-Italian spouse remarries a person of Italian decent, the new spouse can apply for a Lifetime Membership at a reduced rate of 50% percent of the then applicable rate. BACKGROUND: The Italian American Club of Livonia is currently made up of members of Italian ancestry and their families, many of the spouses of members are not of Italian ancestry but have served the club for many years and donated their time and services to the club over these years. These non Italian members have full voting rights and all the privileges for as long as they are married to the Italian member. Most of these members are Lifetime Members. Upon divorce or death of the Italian lifetime member, the non Italian lifetime member is reduced to an Honarary Member and loses all voting rights within the club. Many of these non Italian lifetime members have served in positions that determined the direction and focus of the club as well as providing both financial and physical assistance on various committees and the Board of Directors. These members were not born Italian but are Italian by choice often giving of more of themselves than their Italian spouses. I feel it is not only a disservice to these members but to the club to cast these people and their ideas aside just because they no longer have an Italian spouse. I therefore would like to submit to the Board the preceding amendment to the Constitution/bylaws of The Italian American Club of Livonia. 7 IACL NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016 MEMBERSHIP NEWS Italian American Club of Livonia 8 IACL NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016 MEMBERSHIP NEWS Italian American Club of Livonia October 9th – Columbus Day Mass – 11 a.m. – Followed with refreshments in Church basement and visit to Bust of Columbus on Jefferson across from Ren/Cen for Annual Wreath Placement & Ceremony. For the first six years of his life, Gino was raised by his grandparents, Loreto and Catarina Viscogliosi, while his parents operated the family store in Arpino. He loved growing up with his grandparents, aunts, uncles and large extended family on the farm with the horses, cows, sheep and chickens. He enjoyed being outdoors and up in the beautiful mountains surrounding their town. At the age of 15, Gino immigrated to the United States accompanied by his grandfather. He arrived to join his parents along with his siblings, Paul, Mafalda (Soave), Gaetano and Gabriella who had immigrated earlier in order to create a better life for the family. Initially the family lived in Garden City, but ultimately settled in the Livonia area. Gino worked with his siblings in their family businesses throughout the years and assisted his parents with many of the household duties including caring for their large vegetable garden, fruit trees and flowers. Gino has been an honorary member of our club since 2006. Not only has he been employed by our banquet center, he also enjoys attending the many events at our club. Our club has become like a second home to him and he loves many of our members as family. If you are an active member, I’m sure you have seen Gino helping out around our club whether it be setting up for the pasta buffet dinners, cleaning up after our events and even watering the flowers outside. If anyone ever needs help, Gino is always there to lend a helping hand with a big smile on his face. Gino’s other passions are his family and his church, St. Edith, where he is an usher and a member of the Knights of Columbus. When not attending events or working at the club he is either attending mass at St. Edith or one of the many family events with his brothers, sister and his many nieces and nephews. Gino also enjoys going for walks and bike riding. He recently went back to visit family in Italy last year and is looking forward to returning on another trip soon. GINO WILL BE HONORED ON OCTOBER 9TH DURING THE COLUMBUS DAY CELEBRATION! 18 IACL NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016 Italian American Club of Livonia CULTURAL COMMITTEE NEWS Past Recipients of Outstanding Italian of the Year Award 2004 Mr. Sandro Scopone 2005 Mr. Mario Galasso 2006 Fr.
