Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan The Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan was founded in November 1975 by a group of individuals with the desire to protect and preserve the Ford Mustang as one of the most attractive and fun filled cars ever made available. We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair of the many generations of America’s Premiere Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fastback from 1964 ½ to the new 2005 GT or the 2007 Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club members is to collect, restore and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although ownership is not a requirement for membership, your enthusiasm, expertise and and/or love of the automobile are most welcome. Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang. Our general membership meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club activities, technical information, advertisements and business service locations and more. Some club activities include car shows, picnics, sporting events, cruise nights and technical sessions. Membership dues for MOCSEM are $30.00 per year; [$40.00 per/yr American funds for Canadians.] Using the application from the website send payment to: MOCSEM P.O. People have commented that one of the many reasons they like being a part of M.O.C.S.E.M. is the year-round activities. The movie night on February 23rd was the second non-meeting activity planned for this year, and the 13 of us who participated had a lot of fun. We went to Westland Showcase Cinema and saw Fool’s Gold, and then 9 of us went over to Ruby Tuesday’s for a great dinner, great conversation and many laughs. In March we have 2 activities. On Friday the 14th, head over to the Redford Theatre and catch the 8 p.m. showing of the original 1968 film ‘Bullitt’. There is no sign-up sheet, just join us there. Then, on Saturday the 15th, we have Chow and Chuckles at Joey’s Comedy Club, which is on Plymouth Rd west of Wayne Rd. in Livonia. The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. LAST CHANCE TO SIGN-UP IS AT THE MARCH MEMBERSHIP MEETING. I have to purchase the tickets ahead of time, so YOU MUST HAVE YOUR MONEY AT THE MARCH MEETING. The cost is $33 per person. You can bring cash, or write a check to me, Jenny Root. April has 2 activities planned, as well. The first is Saturday the 19th – bowling at Merri-bowl at 2 p.m. $8.50 gets you 2 games of bowling, pizza, and pop. If you need shoes, they will be 99 cents. Sign-up at the meeting and pay me at the bowling alley. Merri-bowl is on the north side of 5 Mile Rd east of Merriman. This has been a lot of fun, so plan to join in. Sunday, April 20th at 6 p.m., is our first Ice Cream Social for the year. It will be at Culver’s in Westland, which is in the Meijer parking lot off of Newburgh at Warren Rd. May promises to be fun and busy as well. There will be a free pizza party for members at the membership meeting on the 13th; Saturday the 17th will be a Road Rally/Scavenger Hunt; we’ll have our first monthly cruise in at Ashley’s on Thursday the 22nd from 5 – 8 p.m.; and the Quality Care Car Show will be Saturday the 24th. Watch for the sign-up sheets at the meetings for these events, and always feel free to contact me for information (my contact information is at the front of the newsletters). Also, Bob Paul tells us that Cruz’n 528 will start up again on Wednesday, May 21st @ 5p.m. I will get specifics from him and share them with you in the next newsletter. HOPE YOU CAN JOIN IN ON THE FUN!! ‘Til the next time, Jenny Editor’s (Ken Janus) Message: Guy Trupiano presented Gary Roe (President & C.O.O. of AAI) with a MOCSEM 2007 Memories Plaque as a thank you for their continued sponsorship of our club. Adult Christmas Party Neil’s Wheels Every so often, I get an email from a local newspaper asking me to comment about Mustang or muscle car-related topics for an article that some reporter is putting together. It is one of the perils of being club president. Some of the questions focus on the history or longevity of the Mustang, or some other more generic questions about why people like muscle cars. Recently, I was asked a more thought-provoking question that got me thinking about what I saw at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this January. “Will the muscle car survive in the future?” That is an interesting question in this time of $3 plus gas prices and the state of our economy. I recently walked the floor of the auto show and was overwhelmed by the displays of “green” environmental-conscience vehicles and technology. There were hybrid this, that, and the other thing from almost every manufacturer. I saw full electric vehicles that could recharge using normal household plug-ins. Every manufacturer was showing vehicles with downsized engines, alternative fuels, plug-in hybrids, bio-fuels, and the list goes on. Traditional “muscle cars” played second fiddle compared to the green displays at the auto show. The Chevy Camaro, which isn’t on sale yet even though it has been shown at the auto show for three years, was sitting off to the side with no special display. The most prevalent performance vehicle display in the GM area was the new 600+hp ZR1 Corvette. Dodge didn’t bring the new Challenger, instead choosing to debut the production car at the Chicago show in February. Even at the Ford display the Bullitt Mustang was on a turntable in a dark corner. Only the new Shelby GT500 KR was on a pedestal along a main walkway. Congress and our current president signed legislation that requires the average car to achieve 35 mpg by 2020, and most domestic manufacturers were more interested in showing the public how we were going to get there. This scene was very different than a short 5 years ago when people filled the floor to get a glimpse of the new Mustang Concept. So what does this mean for the muscle car? I believe there is a place for it as long as the baby boomers are still buying cars they like and can afford. The most interesting thing is that we may see our “definition” of a muscle car change a little. The traditional American muscle car has usually consisted of the feel and sound of a V8 engine. But the technology of our “green” future will be used to achieve more power with less engine displacement. For example, Ford is working on its Ecoboost technology which consists of using turbocharging and direct gas injection to get more performance and use less fuel. Next year Ford will launch the Ecoboost 3.5L V6 engine rated at 350hp and 350 ft-lbs of torque as an option on some vehicles. It will still achieve the same gas mileage as a traditional V6. Even though Ford has not announced the use of this engine for a future Mustang, it got me thinking. A Mustang with the Ecoboost 3.5L V6 engine would surely outrun a current GT with the 300hp 4.6L V8, and it would weigh less and get better gas mileage. But would the Mustang still be considered a Muscle car with a V6? Would the Mustang still need to offer a V8 to make the Mustang buyer happy? Back in the mid-80’s, the Mustang SVO offered great performance and good gas mileage using a turbocharged 4cylinder engine, but it didn’t catch on due to cost and other factors. Maybe now the world is ready for a high-performance smaller displacement engine in the Mustang. I’m interested to know what you think. The Accelerator March 11th General Meeting Preview I will use part of my message each month to let you know some special things to expect at the next general meeting. Maybe you’ll want to come and check it out! • • • • • This will be our last meeting before the Spring Swap & Shop at Village Ford. We will make sure we have everything ready for the big sale. Club member directory will be available if you did not pick one up at a previous meeting. Scott Hoag from Mustang Racing Technologies (MRT) will be visiting us to review what MRT is working on to make latemodel Mustangs even more exciting. MRT has been a very generous MOCSEM sponsor over the years and we value the relationship between our club and Scott's team at MRT. We will announce chairpersons for the Mustang Memories Car Show so we can start getting workers organized. Some of the show promotional material like the logo and sponsor request letter will be reviewed. Remember, winter is a great time to dig out some parts for swap and sell. You can also get parts ready for the Spring Swap! Here is another fun vintage toy that is not too expensive to play with: 1965 Mustang GT Fastback Molded Plastic Toy Car Approx. 1/18 scale. by Processed Plastics Co., Made in USA circa 1966 These toy cars are some of the more prevalent vintage Mustang toys available today. These simple but good looking toy cars consisted of a molded plastic body, clear plastic windows, a basic molded interior and chassis with underbody details, and plastic wheels with metal axles. The cars have details like plastic-chromed bumpers, grill, headlights, and hubcaps. According to original sales packaging, these cars retailed for a whopping 99 cents and were sold at dime stores in large quantities. Many variations of this car can be found. The popular colors are red, white, and blue with others like yellow, gold, and olive being much harder to find. There are even unique versions including a red fire chief car, a blue police car, and a white emergency car that included a light bar with sirens and blow horn on the roof. These toy cars are rugged compared to other toys, but many are scratched from rough play. The plastic is fairly soft and can warp due to heat or being stored under heavier objects. The car can also look “lowered” due to sagging axles from being pushed down too hard by a rambunctious child. Finding one of these cars in its original package tray is extremely rare. The colorful box states that the toy offers “hours of fun with this popular sports car!” The artwork on the back flap shows five galloping Mustang horses and a cloud of dust. This is one toy where the box is probably worth more than the toy. The few times I have seen this toy with the box, it typically sells for up to 4 times the price of the car alone. Most of the common versions of this car sell for around $25, while the boxed examples have sold for nearly $100. Page 6 Tech Article: Brake Trouble Shooting Tips to go by. CAUSE: Bleeder screws on calipers not on top. REASON: The bleeder screws on calipers must be at the 12:00 position on the caliper to allow all the air to escape during bleeding. A very common mistake installers will make is to reverse the side the caliper goes on giving you a situation where the caliper bleeder screw is facing down. It's also common to use the wrong caliper on a bolt on disc kit giving a situation a situation where the bleeder hole is shifted from the 12:00 position producing a pocket of air at the top of the caliper bore which can not be dislodged. Check your bleeder hole orientation. CAUSE: A defective master cylinder which does not hold pressure. REASON: If brake fluid bypasses a pressure seal on the master cylinder you get a pedal that fades. To test for this obtain two inverted flare plugs at an auto parts store and plug both master cylinder outlets. Try your pedal. If the pedal is high and firm the master cylinder is good. If the pedal faces the master is bad. Replace master as necessary. CAUSE: No residual pressure valve to rear drum brakes. REASON: Drum braked require the use of a 10 lb residual pressure valve in the line. This residual pressure counter balances the drum brake spring tension keeping the shoes close to the drums. This results in a higher firmer pedal. You can test this by clamping off the rear hose removing the rear drums from the system. Now test your pedal. If the pedal gets better you will need to splice a 10 lb residual pressure valve into the rear line. CAUSE: Hard line that loops up. REASON: Hard brake line that loops up and then back down will tend to trap air. It doesn't take much air to cause problems so check your line carefully. CAUSE: Incorrect master cylinder. REASON: If the bore of the master cylinder is too small for the fluid requirements of the system you will get a very poor pedal. This will happen most frequently with four piston calipers and with four wheel disc brakes. The only solution for this is to install a larger bore master cylinder of a true four wheel disc master. CAUSE: Incorrectly bled or adjusted rear calipers. REASON: Rear calipers that have an internal parking brake with a lever can be troublesome. These calipers must be adjusted so that the piston is moved out and the pads are close to the rotor. If this initial adjustment is not made the pistons will travel outward during activation but no squeezing of the rotor will occur. This can be checked by clamping off the rear hoses and checking if the pedal gets better. Adjust as necessary. CAUSE: Incorrect booster pin length. REASON: The booster pin that pushes on the master cylinder must almost be touching the master cylinder piston face. A gap larger than 1/32" will begin to introduce a spongy pedal. Adjust as necessary. CAUSE: Silicone brake fluid. REASON: While silicone fluid is great because it does not attack paint it also aerates very easily and can give a spongy pedal. NOTE: If you heat the silicone brake fluid to 250 degrees, it will get rid of the spongy pedal. CAUSE: Rear wheel cylinders too large. REASON: Rear drum wheel cylinders that are too large will give a poor pedal. Check as in step six above. CAUSE: Loose front wheel bearings. REASON: Loose front wheel bearings will cause rotor wobble. This will cause the caliper pistons to retract too far into the caliper giving a spongy pedal every time you hit the brakes. Check and adjust as necessary. Please be advised that this information is for suggestion only and is based on prior experience The Accelerator Page 7 Tech Article: SALEEN Brake Bleeding Need I Say Any More It is a common misconception that bleeding the brakes is done with pressure, the more the better. In fact, if you were taught the two-man process there is a strong chance you're under the impression that bleeding is actually a contest to see how far you can shoot the fluid out of the caliper! Nothing could be further from the truth. A gentle stroke and firm but light pressure does the trick every time. The key is to gently but firmly move the fluid through the system while displacing the air trapped in it. Here is what you will need: a properly sized box wrench and a clear plastic bleed hose are essential. Good quality, non-silicone fluid is also a must. In addition, you'll need to enlist the help of a coworker or friend. Though you may have purchased a brake bleeding tool, either vacuum or pressure, and are satisfied with your results, approaching this task as a two-person operation will achieve the best results. 1. Slowly pour fluid into the master cylinder so as not to aerate the fluid. 2. Next, move to the caliper farthest from the master cylinder and attach the clear plastic bleed hose to the bleeder and open it. VERY SLOWLY stroke the brake pedal by hand or foot until fluid comes out. Now close the bleeder. 3. ACTUAL BLEEDING SEQUENCE: • Have your partner very slowly, with modest pressure (approximately 25-30 ft./lbs.), stroke the pedal one time until hydraulic resistance is encountered. Ask your partner to hold at this point with the same modest and even pressure and notify you that he is "holding." • Open the bleeder, letting the pedal go to the floor or until it stops using the same modest level of pressure, then close the bleeder again. Notify your partner "the system is sealed." 4. Repeat the bleeding sequence (never stroke the pedal more than one time) until all signs of air are purged (no bubbles) from the fluid. DO NOT LET THE MASTER CYLINDER RUN DRY. Check the fluid level every third bleeding sequence or sooner, depending on the size of the reservoir. 5. Before moving to the next caliper, take a small block of wood or a plastic hammer and carefully tap the calipers to dislodge any additional air bubbles that may be trapped. Then bleed one last time. 6. Move to the location that is the next furthest from the master cylinder and repeat the above process. Continue until all calipers have been bled. Before re-installing the wheels, we recommend that all surfaces are wiped clean-including calipers, hose joints, fittings, and rotorsto make sure they are dry and free from seepage, dirt and oils. Bleeding the brakes is one of the most important tasks you can perform on a vehicle. The above technique will get the job done in the most straightforward and thorough fashion possible. Please be advised that this information is for suggestion only and is based on prior experience The phrase “Saving the best for last” just got an exclamation point. Plus these superchargers are very quiet and require no maintenance for 100,000 miles. For Sale – Two polished Eagle Aluminum wheels 15x8, 55mm offset, Max. load 1900lbs. $140.00.
