All of our courses have close links with industry to keep them relevant and up-to-date. Our links ensure that students are engaging with relevant activities preparing them for the world of work. We work in partnership with many employers and invite a range of guest speakers and experts to work with you to enhance your knowledge and understanding of your chosen field. Doncaster College has industry standard working environments, some of which are commercial businesses. For example, the Inspire Salon, the Waterfront Restaurant and some of our cutting edge engineering and construction facilities offer the opportunity for you to work on projects and in environments to develop skills and enhance your CVs in ways that we know are valued by employers. 13 At Doncaster College it’s not just about the course, it’s about the whole learning environment. The time you take to study, the people you meet and the things that you can get involved in all impact on your student experience. STUDENT All students have access to The Hub’s Common Room, open between 10.00am and 3.00pm most days. Comfy sofas, pool tables, table tennis and large screens playing the latest hits are all available so you can relax in the company of friends when you’re not in lessons. make student life more exciting, memorable and rewarding. You can use it to make your money go further on books, clothes, sports equipment, CDs, travel, computer gear, gigs and even eating out. Go to the Cash Office to get one or buy one online at www.nusextra.co.uk When you start College, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase an NUS Extra card, which gives you exclusive discounts, offers and competitions designed to PLACES TO EAT Whichever campus you are at, you will find a variety of healthy, budget friendly bites to eat from breakfast to lunch. Whether you’re after a simple sandwich or a full cooked dinner, we have something for everyone. You’ll never be thirsty, as you will find plenty of vending machines, water points and coffee bars located across the various campuses selling a variety of thirst quenching drinks. You can also bring in your own lunch — you’ll find loads of comfy seats dotted around campus to take some time out and refuel. 15 The Student Union can give you advice and guidance, whatever your problem. You can access the Student Union drop-in service to get advice on things like money matters, keeping healthy, childcare, travel, housing and loads more. If you have problems with your course, or need any support, they can help. You are automatically eligible for membership of the Student Union once you have enrolled, allowing you to run for Student Governor or vote in College elections. Interested in volunteering? Want to work with the Student Union? Why not get involved? Join us to plan student events for the coming year, run societies and clubs and much more! We need you to help us make sure you get the most out of your Student Union. 17 LEARNING RESOURCE The Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) are situated at both The Hub and High Melton campuses, offering a range of welcoming environments to help you study. There are over 70,000 books, multimedia resources and journals to support your chosen course of study. There is access to approximately 100 computers across both campuses with facilities to print, scan, copy and finish documents in black and white or colour. Wireless internet access is available for you to bring your own mobile device. IT staff are based in the LRCs and are available to support you with your studies. As well as physical resources, staff and students have online access to the web catalogue, over 5,000 electronic books, 30 subscription databases, and more than 500,000 full text journal articles. These online resources can be accessed at a time to suit you, from any internet enabled device, both on and off campus, and support all programme/curriculum areas. Opening hours during term time are 8: 15am until 8:00pm, Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 4.45pm on Fridays. Vacation opening hours may vary and do not include evenings and Saturdays. 19 APPRENTICESHIPS 21 Doncaster College offers Apprenticeships in a wide range of subject areas. These are a great way of getting a job in an industry you are interested in and earning some money while you learn. In addition you will also gain real life experiences to help you along the way. Doing an Apprenticeship improves your job prospects, you get to build up your knowledge and learn transferable skills, all whilst working towards a sector specific qualification. These programmes are for young people aged 16-24. Some of our programmes will help you develop further skills in looking after yourself, becoming more independent and making choices and decision about what you would like to do in the future. Other programmes will help you to develop skills for work and make decisions about further study or employment. Each course is especially designed for mature students who do not have the necessary academic qualifications to apply for university level study. This is roughly equivalent to an A-Level and the programme provides UCAS points to enable progress to higher education at degree level. This is a new course for Doncaster College but we have a unique blend of aviation industry trained staff with a wealth of experience in providing proven studies in this exciting field. This means we are able to provide a range of units that some other providers are unable to offer. We are committed to ensuring our looked after young people and care leavers receive the best opportunities to succeed. CHILDCARE Waterbabies Nursery aims to provide a safe stimulating environment in a caring atmosphere, to help promote children’s holistic development. • Waterbabies Nursery is registered and inspected by Ofsted • Offers 50 nursery places • Baby room age is from 6 months to 2 years • Free flow toddler room age is from 2 to 5 years • All staff are qualified to at least Level 3 in Childcare • All staff have regular DBS checks done and attend regular safeguarding training • All staff hold a current First Aid / Food Hygiene Certificate • Staff undergo continual professional development training • Encourage and promote equality, diversity and inclusion • Have an open door policy for parents/carers. 101 English and Maths play an essential part of our studies, work and everyday life. As a compulsory part of your study programme you will work towards achieving an A*-C grade in both English and Maths. If you have a grade D or E in English or Maths, then you will be enrolled onto a GCSE programme. If this is not the case, then you will be enrolled onto Functional Skills for your English and/or Maths. BUT I’VE ALREADY GOT A GCSE IN ENGLISH AND MATHS If you’ve already achieved a grade A*- C in English and Maths you will continue to build on these subjects through your vocational programme. We want to make sure that all students have the chance to enhance the skills needed to succeed in everyday life, education and in the workplace. However, popular courses tend to fill up quickly so the earlier you apply the better.
