Dear Serious-Minded Sports Tourism
Professional:
Welcome to Milwaukee and the 2015
NASC Sports Event Symposium! We
promise lots to see, do and learn. As the
industry’s only member directed
association, we are returning to a past
host city for the first time. Much has
changed since 1995 including a ten-fold increase in
attendance. There were 91 attendees in 1995 and well over
900 this year!
Our industry continues its steady growth. NASC membership
is at record levels, attendance at our meetings is up, and we
have more event owners and owner representatives at the
Symposium than ever.
Last year we committed to refocus all of our efforts around
continued education. Here in Milwaukee you will receive
multiple servings of the latest and best practices in sports
event travel. Our member directed meetings committee has
been working for a year on the program and we are very sure
you will get the right mix of information, fun, and opportunities
to write new business.
You will hear from experts across the United States but also
from Canada, Denmark and Switzerland. This is by design:
there is so much to learn from others and the world of
international sport is available to interested host cities.
Nothing remains the same. Beth Hecquet resigned to accept
a position outside the industry earlier this year, and Lori
Gamble has accepted a fulltime position as your Associate
Executive Director. We are not hiring a director of meetings
and events. Instead we are evaluating our needs, creating
new job descriptions,
considering budget implications and then moving forward
with at least one new employee.
In the past year we were able to accomplish the following:
• CSEE program redesign including a decision to introduce
on-line learning late in 2015
• Expanded our national marketing and public relations
programs
• Started our NASC Playbook (quarterly publication)
• Introduced our Get in the Game weekly newsletter
• Created an extensive series of webinars
• Created our own stand-alone fall conference that launches
this September in Colorado Springs
For 2016 you can expect more. For example, we will establish
the NASC Hall of Fame and hold the inaugural enshrinement
dinner in Grand Rapids. This project will be directed by our
Leadership Council, which consists of past chairpersons of
the NASC.
So, listen, learn, share and sell!
Warm wishes,
Don Schumacher

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
2015-2016 Committees and
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are the foundation of the
NASC. In the last year, more than 100
committee volunteers contributed to
the progress and growth of the NASC
in many ways, including:
• Referring industry colleagues to join the Association
• Recommending educational content and programming
for the annual NASC Sports Event Symposium, the original
conference and longest-running reverse tradeshow for the
sports tourism industry
• Expanding mentoring activities for new members and first
time Symposium attendees
• Establishing new categories and serving on judging panels
for the annual member awards
• Developing CSEE modules
• Creating the inaugural NASC Sports Legacy Fund
community service project
We invite you to respond to this year’s call for volunteers.
We need your skills, passion, and perspectives to build a
vibrant, inclusive, and multicultural group of volunteer
leaders throughout our committees.
The NASC is YOUR association; committee participation is
one of the best ways to be engaged and help contribute
to the decision-making that continues to position the NASC
as the most valuable resource available to sports
event professionals.
Members, including new committee members and those
who currently serve, must respond to the call for volunteers
by May 8, 2015. Thank you for your consideration!
Yours in Sport,
Greg Ayers

Welcome to Milwaukee!
We are thrilled to host a record number of attendees at the 2015 NASC Sports Event
Symposium and to be the first city chosen to host the Symposium for a second time in its
23-year history.
Milwaukee’s reputation as an attractive, affordable "Sports-Friendly City" continues to grow.
The city welcomes thousands of athletes each year to events ranging from NCAA Men’s
Basketball tournament, WI State Boys & Girls Soccer Championships, Big East Volleyball
Championships and NCAA Men’s Frozen Four, to USA Fencing North American Cup, USA
Table Tennis - US Open and US Speedskating World Cup Qualifier. For an unprecedented
third year in 2015, Milwaukee will host the USA Triathlon Age Group National
Championships along Lake Michigan.
Milwaukee’s winning lineup of first-class facilities includes the Wisconsin Center and UWMilwaukee Panther Arena with their wide range of configurations, along with Miller Park and
BMO Harris Bradley Center, homes of the Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks, and
even the Milwaukee Mile, the oldest operating motor speedway in the world. Add to this The
Pettit Ice Center, an official U.S. Olympic Training Center, Uihlein Soccer Park, The Rock
Sports Complex and Bradford Beach, and you’ve got a great sports destination.
You’ll enjoy the walkability of downtown Milwaukee and the convenience of the Hilton
Milwaukee City Center and Hyatt Regency Milwaukee, connected to the Wisconsin Center by
skywalk. You can rev up your engines at the opening night reception at the world’s only
Harley-Davidson Museum and have fun exploring the city’s vibrant dining scene, nightlife
and brewery tours.
Best wishes for a successful symposium in Milwaukee! Our VISIT Milwaukee staff looks
forward to sharing ideas with you and learning from you.

April 27, 2015
GREETINGS!
On behalf of the City of Milwaukee, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all attendees of
the 2015 NASC Sports Event Symposium held April 27-30, 2015. I commend the National
Association of Sports Commissions for its commitment to develop the sports tourism industry,
promote access to event information and advance the value of sporting events in our
communities.
The City of Milwaukee is proud to be the home of the Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Bucks,
the Admirals and Milwaukee Wave, and our great State is the home of the Green Bay Packers.
Milwaukee is a destination for all sports fanatics and as Milwaukeeans, we love to rally and
support our home teams.
Milwaukee’s exciting attractions and a lively downtown area, combined with its renowned
warmth and hospitality, assure all participants of a memorable visit. The magnificent kinetic
“wings” of the lakeside Milwaukee Art Museum welcome visitors to experience its world-class
collections. Interactive science, technology and water science exhibits beckon at neighboring
Discovery World. The one-of-a-kind Harley-Davidson Museum dazzles with its exhibits
featuring motorcycles, history and American pop culture.
You will find lively entertainment and a tempting array of dining options throughout the City. A
charming RiverWalk links downtown to Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward, where unique
shopping awaits at the Milwaukee Public Market, featuring everything from locally made
chocolates to spices, wine and seafood. The unique neighborhoods of Old World Third Street,
Walker’s Point, Brady Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive all invite you to experience the
City’s rich cultural tradition and diversity.
I hope you have the opportunity to explore Milwaukee and see all our City has to offer. I look
forward to meeting you and best wishes on a successful symposium!
Sincerely,
Tom Barrett

Harley-Davidson® Motor Company
Monday, April 27................................. 11:30am - 4:00pm CT
Harley-Davidson Museum®
The focus for CSEE in the spring module will be branding.
Where better than in Milwaukee to learn the ins and outs of
brand development, extensions, protection and expansion
than at the home of one of America’s most iconic brands:
Harley-Davidson.
Lunch and the CSEE session will be held in a meeting room at
the Harley-Davidson Museum ®. After a presentation by Stacey
Watson, Director, Retail Development and HDCX Services at
Harley Davidson, you will be sent on a series of tasks in the
museum itself. Important elements of the brand story can be
found in the museum, and you will be required to complete a
series of tasks that support points made in the presentation.
Certification can be earned in as little as two and a half years
for grandfather participants and four years for standard
participants. CSEE designation is awarded to individuals who
have successfully completed eight modules (five modules for
individuals with grandfather status). Modules are currently
offered at the annual NASC Sports Event Symposium and
Market Segment Meetings.
Harley-Davidson has had many ups and downs over the past
century, but the brand remained paramount in every step
taken to preserve the company and its products. These efforts
had to survive the depression, a world war, and acquisition by
another automotive brand. After regaining its independence,
Harley-Davidson has never looked back as it continues to grow
and extend their brand.
Graduate Benefits

2. Awareness and use of leading-edge industry knowledge
and applications
3. Recognition of achievement from the industry and
professional peers
4. Influential peer to peer networking and personal
camaraderie
5. Demeanor of personal accomplishment and confident
leadership
Some of the issues discussed will include knowing what you
are, the importance of experiential marketing, personalization
of the brand, how to tell your story, building brand loyalty and
repeat customers.
Once the tasks are complete, a discussion will take place on
key learnings, including the importance of engaging the
customer in activities that reinforce the purchase decision.

In 2013, the Olympic Day event was run by nine people who
managed 832 events, 632 Olympians/Paralympians and
215,000 participants. However, the Olympic Day team was

Wednesday, April 29.............................2:15 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.

Access to facilities has been an issue for CVBs and Sports
Commissions since the beginning. Often DMOs find
themselves at the bottom of the hierarchy for facility usage,
falling behind most every other user group, and turning away
millions of dollars worth of business. In the spring of 2013, an
effort was started by Visit Eau Claire to coordinate a facility
partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for
exclusive usage of guaranteed dates, within 36-month

partnership mutually beneficial for both organizations, an
official agreement was signed in the fall of 2013.
In this session, participants will understand the steps it took
to formulate the agreement and how Visit Eau Claire created

High profile CEOs and entrepreneurs often say that they
learned more from failure than success. We don’t routinely
hear the same message from leaders within our industry.
The plain truth is this: every city has sought events that were
awarded to other competing cities, and months of work are
seemingly unrewarded. How have some cities rebounded
from an unsuccessful bid, while others have unraveled?
This session brings together leaders from three highly
successful sports commissions to tell their “failure to success”

“thrill of victory.” Participants will learn how Philadelphia,
