COASTER CON XXXIV
CONVENTION JUNE 19–22, 2011 • TOUR OF TEXAS JUNE 23–26
The original
Six Flags.
A classic
local park.
Coaster Con XXXIV
has the best
of both worlds!
With 13 roller coasters on the horizon of Six Flags Over Texas
today, the founding fathers of the original Six Flags park could hardly
have conceived of what the modest regional theme park would eventually grow up to be, and the significant impact it would make upon the
industry.
On opening day in 1961, Six Flags introduced the pay-one-price
practice that has become an industry standard. Other significant milestones often cited by amusement park historians include the first log
flume, the first modern-day parachute ride, the first freefall ride and
Broadway-style shows inside a theme park. Celebrating 50 years in
2011, the park still entertains guests with many of these attractions, as
well as a line-up of roller coasters that is an enthusiast’s dream.
Perhaps the most notable coaster offered at Six Flags Over Texas
is the highly discussed New Texas Giant that has transformed the legendary woodie with an all-new, airtime-filled steel track layout. Old
favorites are not forgotten though; Shock Wave is vintage Schwarzkopf
at its best, delivering an amazing balance of positive and negative Gs.
Acknowledged with an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark plaque,
Runaway Mine Train was an early tubular steel coaster and the first
(and still one of the best) mine train-themed ride, which would eventually become an industry staple.
The LIM-launched Mr. Freeze is an intense thrill at 70 mph. And
towering above them all is Titan at 245 feet, delivering a powerful experience to the general public and coaster enthusiasts alike. Wood, inverted, looping, indoor, spinning, bobsled and a couple of
family coasters round out the mix. It’s all here.
On the outskirts of Dallas is Sandy Lake Amusement Park, for
many ACErs an undiscovered traditional park gem. In addition to the
many classic flat rides are a swimming pool, paddle boats and mini-golf.
Of highest interest to ACE members are the Allen Herschell Little
Dipper and a classic Pretzel dark ride. Plan to enjoy a pleasant afternoon
of old school charm at Sandy Lake, which is celebrating its 41st anniversary this year.
These four days in the Dallas/Fort Worth area will also include an
evening at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor and some wonderful surprises
from our host parks that only Con attendees will be able to enjoy. Throw
in the many varied, always popular convention activities and you have a
superb Con.
Top it off with the grand banquet Wednesday evening and, if you
want to keep the party going, extend your vacation with the Tour of
Texas – optional add-on dates at some of the best parks in south Texas.
