COMEBACK STORY
Chiney Ogwumike (22 points, 10 rebounds) had her fifth double-double of the season – all in the last eight games – during Connecticut’s 87-74
win over the Phoenix Mercury at Mohegan Sun Arena. Ogwumike scored 20 of her points in the second half on 8-of-11 shooting, and helped close
out the visitors with 12 fourth-quarter points. It was her fifth 20-point game of the year, and her 11th straight double-figure scoring game. Ogwumike has reached double figures in 15 of her last 16 games, with a nine-point game at Dallas (7/2) ruining what would be the longest stretch of
double-figure scoring games in her career. In the last 11 games, Ogqumike is averaging 17.7 points and 8.4 rebounds. A third-year forward who
earned Rookie of the Year honors while averaging 15.5 points with 13 double-doubles and 29 double-figure scoring games in 2014, Ogwumike
missed all of last year recovering from micro-fracture surgery performed on her right knee on January 22, 2015. She started the year scoring in
single figures in nine of the first 10 games while averaging 6.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Since then, she has raised her scoring average
to 12 ppg. Ogwumike had one of the best games of her career during an 89-78 win at Dallas (7/20). She had personal highs of 26 points and
seven blocks while also pulling down a season-high 15 rebounds. She also tied a career high with four steals. The seven blocked shots were tied
for third most in team history. Qgwumike set a franchise record for most shots made without a miss against Minnesota (7/7), going 8-for-8 on the
way to 21 points. The old record was 7 of 7 by Taj McWilliams-Franklin (7/21/2000).
ALL THAT JAS
Jasmine Thomas continued to build on her career year Friday night, collecting 18 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals on 7-of-19
shooting. In the process, Thomas established a new single-season career high for assists (139) and tied her single-season career best for steals
(41 in 2015). She has already surpassed her single-season high for points (309 and counting), and needs six rebounds to set a new single-season
mark in that category. Currently third in the WNBA in assist average (5.0 per game) and fifth in steals per game (1.46), Thomas has 16 games
this season with at least five assists, and has 33 assists with just seven turnovers in the last six games. She has averaged 14.8 points per game
in that span. She set a new career-high with 10 assists in a win San Antonio (6/19), matched a career high with eight made field goals on the
way to a season-high 20 points with four rebounds, three assists and three blocks at Dallas (7/20). Thomas set new single-season marks with
133 assists, 127 rebounds and 41 steals in 2015. This season, Thomas has reached career milestones of 1,500 points, 500 assists and 500
rebounds.
DISTANCE RECORD
Sun scoring leader Alex Bentley had two more three-pointers on the way to 16 points, and she also had a season-high five steals. Bentley leads
the Sun with a career-high 42 three-pointers, and has at least one three in 20 games this year, with multiple threes in 12 games. She had a
career-high five threes in a comeback win over Minnesota on July 7th, jump-starting a rally from 11-points down with three made threes in
the last two minutes of regulation, and seven points in overtime. Earlier this season, Bentley tied a franchise record by reeling off consecutive
20-point games at Phoenix (6/29), at Dallas (7/2) and at home against Minnesota (7/7). Her bid for a Sun record four straight 20-point games
ended against Atlanta (7/10). Bentley (twice), Tina Charles (3), Nykesha Sales (2), Shannon Johnson (2) and Jen Lacy (1) are the only Sun players
to post three straight 20-point games. Prior to Atlanta, Bentley averaged 19.8 points in a nine-game stretch from June 12-July 7th. That included
matching career-highs with 31 points and 12 made field goals in a triple overtime loss to the Mystics (6/14). Last year, Bentley established new
career highs for scoring (14.7 ppg), steals (49) and made threes (38) while starting 25 games. She missed the last nine games of 2015 with an
ankle injury.
BIG WEEK FOR MILLER
Prior to Friday night’s win over Phoenix, a press conference was held to announce that Sun first-year coach Curt Miller would also be adding the
role of general manager to his duties. In August, Chris Sienko announced he was stepping down from his position as Vice President, General
Manager, COO and Alternate Governor of the Connecticut Sun at the end of September. Earlier in the week, Miller earned his 300th win as a head
coach at any level against San Antonio. Miller was 290-124 in 13 seasons as a head college coach at Bowling Green and Indiana University.
DEEP IMPACT
For the 20th time this season, Connecticut finished a game with an edge in bench points. Led by rookies Courtney Williams (eight points, four rebounds) and Jonquel Jones (seven points, three rebounds) the Sun outscored the Mercury 17-6. The Connecticut bench has been dominant in 2016,
piling up a 779-565 advantage. That is an average margin of 27.8-20.1 per game. At Indiana on July 13th, Sun reserves matched a season-high
while outscoring their Indiana counterparts 45-17. The Sun bench also scored 45 in a win over Minnesota (7/7), the most points scored by a Sun
bench since September 7, 2012, when Sun reserves had 47 against Phoenix. At Dallas (7/2), the reserves helped spark one of the key moments in
the season. With a 3-13 Sun team trailing 13-2 just 4:36 into the game, coach Miller replaced his starting five – a combined 1 of 9 shooting at
that point – with Rachel Banham, Chiney Ogwumike, Shekinna Stricklen, Morgan Tuck and Courtney Williams. That group outscored the Wings 1710 before Miller began returning his starters to the game early in the second quarter. The starting five of Camille Little, Alyssa Thomas, Jonquel
Jones, Jasmine Thomas and Alex Bentley were a combined 7 of 11 for 19 points after returning to the game, and the Sun finished 11 of 18 (61.1
percent) from the field in the second quarter, outscoring the Wings 28-15 to take a 41-38 halftime lead. The Sun went on to win that game, and
are 8-4 since then.
TUCK DONE FOR YEAR
Rookie forward Morgan Tuck will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a cartilage tear in her left knee suffered during a loss to the Atlanta
Dream at Philips Arena last Sunday. Selected with the third overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft, Tuck appeared in 26 games, making three starts
while averaging seven points with 74 rebounds and 29 assists. She made 17 three-pointers, and she scored in double figures six times with a
career-high 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting against Seattle (6/10). She ranked fifth among WNBA rookies in scoring and rebounding. She joins fellow rookie Rachel Banham, who was sidelined earlier this season by knee surgery.

MOVING FORWARD
Third-year forward Alyssa Thomas once again contributed across the board in the win over Phoenix, collecting 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. It was the 16th double-figure scoring game of the season for Thomas, who established a new single-season career best for
steals (36) while moving within one assist of her single-season career high (51 in 2014). The versatile forward has led the team in scoring five
times, rebounding four times and assists three times. She is third on the Sun in scoring, second in rebounds and second in steals. Despite being
sidelined for three games because of a concussion suffered at Atlanta (6/12), Thomas has enjoyed a productive year. She had her first doubledouble (17 points, career-high 12 rebounds) of the year against Los Angeles (7/15), and she lifted the Sun to a win over Seattle (6/10) with a
tip-in at the buzzer. She also had a career-high nine made field goals and a season-high 20 points against Indiana (6/5).
GUARDED OPTIMISM
Acquired by the Sun in a June 25th trade that sent Kelsey Bone to Phoenix, rookie guard Courtney Williams continues to provide a crucial spark off
the bench. She had eight points and four rebounds against Phoenix, and has 35 points and 21 rebounds in the last four games. She had 13 points
and a career-best seven rebounds at Atlanta, and has five games with at least five rebounds since joining the team. Before the break, Williams
had a big afternoon in Dallas (7/20), finishing with 14 points off the bench on 6-of-10 shooting with a pair of rebounds and a steal. She was also
6 of 10 for 15 points in a win over Minnesota on July 7th. Connecticut also received the draft rights to Jillian Alleyne, as well as a second round
pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft. Phoenix traded a pick it acquired from San Antonio, which means the final draft position will be determined by how
the Stars finish this season.
WITH LITTLE HELP
Veteran forward Camille Little had a season-high seven rebounds in the win over Phoenix, following up on a solid effort against San Antonio this
past Tuesday. Little tied a career-high with seven assists in the win over the Stars, matching her total from a game against Tulsa on September
6, 2012. With 56 assists, Little is closing in on a new single-season high. She had 63 in 2012. Little scored her 3,000th point against Los Angles
(7/15), and she pulled down her 1,500th rebound at Indiana (7/13).
MARGINAL RESULTS
The Sun may be 11-17, but 18 games have been decided by nine points or less, 10 have been decided by five or less and four have gone to overtime. The Sun have lost 11 games by nine or fewer points, but are 7-3 in games decided by five or fewer points. The last tight loss was 83-76 at
New York (7/17). That followed a 98-92 overtime loss to a 20-2 Los Angeles team on July 15th. And before that, it was a 67-63 loss to Atlanta on
July 10th. The Sun have lost three games to the Sparks by margins of 5, 7 and 6 points (in overtime).
Here’s a look at some of Connecticut’s close losses:
• 6/16 vs New York:
The game was tied at 70 with 2:35 left. New York wins 80-72 win.
• 6/14 vs Washington:
Connecticut had a chance to win the game on the final possession of regulation and each overtime period. Mystics win109-106 in three overtimes.
• 6/12 at Atlanta:
The Sun trailed 84-82 with 1:56 left in regulation. Dream win 93-87.
• 6/3 vs Atlanta:
Connecticut was within three points (80-77) with 20.7 seconds left in an 83-77 loss.
• 5/26 vs. Los Angeles
Connecticut was down three with 24.7 seconds left in a game it eventually lost 77-72.
• 5/21 vs Washington The Sun failed to protect a one-point lead in the closing seconds of regulation, allowing the Mystics to force overtime and prevail 84-76.
FOUL STORY
The Sun took a step back at the free throw line against Phoenix, making just 61.9 percent (13 of 21) while the Mercury were 20 of 22 (90.9
percent). Ranked last in the WNBA in free throw percentage (.727), Connecticut has been outscored by an average of 4.25 points per game at the
line, which is significant considering the Sun are getting outscored by 2.2 points per game overall. Prior to Phoenix, Connecticut had shown clear
signs of progress, making over 80 percent of its attempts from the line in four of its last six games. It had more attempts and makes from the line
than its opponents in three of the last four games. The Sun made a combined 64 of 75 (85.3 percent) free throws over the last three games prior
to the Olympic Break, and the team had season highs of 26 made free throws and 32 attempts at Chicago (7/22).
TEXAS THREE STEP
Connecticut is 3-0 in the state of Texas. Rookie coach Curt Miller won his first game as a WNBA coach back on May 19th at San Antonio, 72-68,
and the Sun swept two games in Dallas. The Sun rallied from an early deficit for an 86-83 win over the Wings on July 2nd, and cruised to an 89-78
win at Dallas July 20th. The Sun won the last two years in San Antonio, and have not dropped a game in that state since 2013.
CAREER NIGHT FOR JJ
Rookie center Jonquel Jones, who had 10 blocks in the five games prior to Phoenix, leads the Sun with 33. She ranks third among rookies in that
category, and is also third among rookies in rebounds (3.3 per game) and eighth in scoring (5.8 ppg). In the last game before the Olympic Break,
Jones had the best night of her WNBA career at Chicago (7/22), posting her first double-double while establishing new career highs for points
(20), rebounds (10), steals (3), made free throws (8), field goal attempts (13) and free throw attempts (9).
BLOCK PARTY
Led by Chiney Ogwumike’s career-high seven blocks, which tied the late Margo Dydek for third best in franchise history, the Sun tied a team mark
with 11 blocked shots at Dallas (7/20). The original mark of 11 was set on June 30, 2006 against the Detroit Shock. In that game, Dydek had
seven blocks. Dydek set the all-time Sun mark of nine blocks in a game against San Antonio on June 30, 2006.

NOTEWORTHY
STOLEN GOODS
Led by Alex Bentley’s five steals, Connecticut had 13 Friday night against the Mercury. It has 66 in the last seven games, and ranks second in the
WNBA at 8.5 steals per game. Indiana (8.96) ranks first. The Sun are on pace for 289. That would be the most steals by the Sun since 2004, when
it finished the season with 299. The single-season franchise record is 320 in 2001.
BANHAM OUT FOR SEASON
Rookie guard Rachel Banham had season-ending micro-fracture surgery on her right knee July 8th at the Constitution Surgery Center in Waterford, CT. Rehabilitation from the surgery, performed by team orthopedist Ammar Anbari, is between four and six months. The initial plan was for
Banham to undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear, but it was known a more serious procedure might be required. Selected
with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft, Banham appeared in 15 games for the Sun, making 20 of 49 shots from the field, including
13 three-pointers. She had two threes in the win at Dallas (7/2), but was limited to five minutes against Minnesota.
A GRASP ON HISTORY
Veteran guard Jasmine Thomas nearly became the sixth player in WNBA history to record a triple double during the win over San Antonio (6/19).
Thomas had 11 points and a career-high 10 assists, and she almost had what would have been a career-high 10th rebound in the final seconds
after Moriah Jefferson missed a free throw. She could not hang on to the ball, however, and settled for tying a career best for rebounds.
A FIRST FOR MILLER
First-year coach Curt Miller earned his first WNBA victory at San Antonio (5/19), where the Sun pulled out a 72-68 win over the Stars at the AT&T
Center. The third head coach in the history of the Sun, Miller won 290 NCAA games as a women’s college head coach from 2001-2014. He was
named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year six times while at Bowling Green, where he led the Falcons to eight regular season MAC titles
and five MAC tournament championships. He led the 2013-14 Indiana Hoosiers to a program record 14 straight wins on the way to a 21-13 mark.
He was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Sparks last season.
ON AN ISLAND
Rookie center Jonquel Jones was born and raised in Freeport Bahamas, but because there are just three full gyms on the island, including two at a
high school and one at a YMCA, she asked her family if she could relocate to the United States to pursue her goal of playing professional basketball. She moved in with a host family in the U.S. at age 14, enjoyed a storied high school career at Riverdale Baptist, and finished her senior year
at George Washington leading the nation in rebound average (14.6 per game). On April 14th, she was selected with the sixth overall pick by the
Los Angeles Sparks and traded to the Sun.
IN THE COMMUNITY
MILLER COMMITS TO REAL MEN WEAR PINK
Connecticut Sun coach Curt Miller has joined a distinguished group of community leaders in Connecticut who will be participating in Real Men
Wear Pink, a new initiative of the American Cancer Society that engages men in the fight against breast cancer. Real Men Wear Pink participants
have committed to wearing pink throughout the month of October while raising donations to support the American Cancer Society in its battle
against breast cancer. Coach Miller will be wearing pink during every Connecticut Sun home game in the month of September.
FARIS, TUCK VISIT CAMP OAKDALE
The Connecticut Sun’s Kelly Faris and Morgan Tuck took part in a clinic for about 25 young basketball players at Camp Oakdale in Montville on
August 17th. The two former UConn stars discussed nutrition and the importance of exercise before leading the children through a series of drills.
SUN TRAVEL TO NEW BRITAIN
The Connecticut Sun players and coaching staff conducted a Jr. WNBA clinic at the New Britain Boys’ and Girls’ Club for about 75 participants on
August 10th. The coaches and players led the children through stretches, a series of drills and finished with relay races.
DINNER WAS SERVED
On May 23rd, Connecticut Sun players, coaches and front office staff served dinner at the New London Community Meal Center in conjunction
with WNBA Cares. It was the fifth straight year the Sun visited the Center, which was established in 1985. It was created to respond to the needs
of New London’s most vulnerable residents by providing nutritious meals in a kind, hospitable and clean environment. The organization currently
provides lunch five days a week and dinner six days a week, including Saturday dinner served by a downtown New London church.
SUN VISIT MURPHY SCHOOL
On May 11th, Connecticut Sun players and coaches visited with 65 fifth graders at the Murphy School in Oakdale as part of Jr WNBA Week. Coach
Curt Miller spoke to a group, then introduced veteran guard Jasmine Thomas, who talked with the children about the importance of nutrition. After
that, Chiney Ogwumike supervised warm-up exercises, and then the students were divided up into smaller groups to work on various basketball
skills.
SUN HOST FOUNDATION BREAKFAST
Sun players, coaches and front office personnel welcomed fans to a preseason Connecticut Sun Foundation breakfast on May 10th at the Mohegan
Sun Convention Center. Fans ate breakfast with players and coaches while listening to short speeches from Team President Mitchell Etess, Vice
President and General Manager Chris Sienko and coach Curt Miller.
