Duxbury Doings - Duxbury Senior Center
Duxbury Doings June 2016 Greetings from the Director— A Nationally Accredited Senior Center During the month of April we were able to say thank you to our volunteers at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. You may not know this but our 228 volunteers donated 21,756.5 hours of service during fiscal 2015. This amazing gift of time is valued at $497,424 (using the Independentsector.org dollar value of $23.07 per hour.) The staff at the Senior Center has two things to say WOW! And THANK YOU!!! You make such a difference in our lives and the lives of the seniors that participate at the Senior Center! Our Volunteer Manager, Chris Coakley, created a list of the top 10 reasons for volunteering and I thought it might pique your interest and desire to become a volunteer or try a new volunteer activity at the Duxbury Senior Center. Top 10 Reasons to Volunteer 10. It’s good for you—you will meet wonderful friends and find out first about all the excellent programs we offer. 9. It saves resources—the donation of time last year is equal to that of 15 full time employees (so when we say couldn’t do it without you, we really mean it! 8. You will gain interesting experience. Our volunteers learn new skills and share their talents with others! 7. Volunteering brings people together. You will meet new friends at the senior center! Or you will reconnect with friends that you haven’t seen in a while. 6. It promotes personal growth and self-esteem. We will learn something from each other and feel good about having contributed to such a great organization 5. Volunteering strengthens our community. It really takes a village to care for one another, and right when you enter the lobby you will meet caring and friendly people. 4. Its fun! There is so much going on everything, we have something for everyone to do and it’s an enjoyable and lively place. 3. You get a chance to give back. Sharing your gifts and talents feels great and studies have shown it is good for your health, too! PROGRAMS & EVENTS TUESDAY, JUNE 7 @ 11:30 AM . Robotics Demo & Presentation. Resiliency Island Creek Village Apartments is accepting applications for 3 housing lotteries for its new 55 and over units, “Island Creek Village North”. Seniors who are resilient are able to adapt to life’s losses. They tend to appreciate the present day, exploring new and old interests and seeking out relationships. This does not mean that resilient seniors don’t remember difficult times or have health issues to manage but they are able to set positive and reasonable goals and keep moving. In comparison, seniors who are not resilient may spend much of their time dwelling on loss and feeling sad or angry, leading to poor quality of life and possibly depression and anxiety. There are two upcoming Information Sessions being held at the Duxbury Senior Center: June 10, 2016 at 2 p.m. July 11, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. You may also pick up an application at the Island Creek Office at 42 Tremont St., Duxbury on Mon., Tues., Wed., & Fri. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Thurs.-10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sat. 10a.m. – 2 p.m. Applications can also be mailed, faxed or emailed. Please call the Island Creek office directly at 781-934-6714 if you have any questions or to request an application. PLEASE NOTE THAT APPLICATIONS ON THE CURRENT WAITLISTS DO NOT TRANSFER TO THE NEW PROPERTY. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE NEW HOUSING LOTTERY APPLICATION TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE NEW BUILDING. Outreach Highlight “Coping with Loss Group” This group meets each month. This is an opportunity to share with others who have also suffered a significant loss in their lives. The group is held on the 1st Monday of each month from 1:00 – 2:30 PM. For more information or to sign up, contact Ellen Gillis, LICSW at Ext. 5731. According to the Mayo Clinic, resiliency is something most people can learn. It involves changing thoughts and behaviors such as, getting connected with others, doing something that makes you feel good, taking care of your health, and thinking back on how you coped with hard times in the past. Resilient seniors do their best to accept their losses, remain hopeful and appreciate the present, they are “good copers”. We have great admiration for the many resilient seniors we meet at the Duxbury Senior Center each day. If you need assistance finding out about resources, activities or professional mental health providers, please contact Donna or Ellen in Outreach at Ext. 5730 or 5731. Adapted from the book Another Country, by Mary Pipher, Ph.D. and “Resilience: Building skills to Endure Hardship” MayoClinic. Morgan Securities in Boston, educates groups about retirement and Social Security benefits with research backed by the firm. Bob's motivation for helping others ensure that their retirement plans are on track comes from his personal experience. Bob watched his father work well into his 50's while ignoring a personal history of poor health. His father missed out on years of retirement and enjoyment with his family because he was never aware that he had enough to retire. Now, it is his mission is to help others safeguard against repeating this mistake. Bob’s presentation is intended to be an insightful experience with no obligation. Veteran’s News June, 2016 VA Secretary Robert McDonald recently testified before the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee regarding the backlog of benefit appeals. He admitted that changes in the process need to take place as soon as possible. He is asking Congress to move ahead with the current reform bill prior to the presidential campaign this fall. Currently there are over 440,000 appeals pending with a timeframe for a hearing on an appealed claim to be over 4 years. McDonald’s goal is to get the timeline down to one year. The plan for change would “disentangle” layers of law that govern disability appeals. It would give Veterans multiple paths to adjudicate claim disputes and would maintain the effective date from when their claim was filed. The VA projects that by 2021, the appeals process should be down to one year. My recommendation for now is NOT to appeal a claim. You should reread carefully the reasons why the VA rejected your claim. Gather potential new information, be clear and concise in your response and refile a new claim. Your review and decision will be quicker than using the appeal process. If you have questions about your military/Veterans benefits contact Duxbury’s Veterans’ Service Officer, Mike Thorp, located at the Senior Center, 781-934-5774 X 5740.
