Q. Why do bees hum?
Medal wins for brothers!
Jack won Bronze, Ryan won Silver at
Gastrells School Mini-mon Stroud Judo
competition on 2nd March 2014.
Jack said “We had to work very hard
and have been doing Judo for about
2 years and these are our first proper
medals, in our 3rd competition. We
have lots of fun and learn so many new
things doing Judo, and make lots of
friends” and Ryan said “it has helped me
a lot with my Dyspraxia. We are looking
forward to getting out of first grade soon
and wearing a red belt, because we are
8 years old now. That’s when you can
work on getting your grades.’

Orlando interviews Nicholas
McCarthy
On the 6th of February Orlando went
to meet Nicholas Mcarthy, a famous
one handed concert pianist, who is
only 24 years old, at the Queens Hotel
Cheltenham. He is the Patron of a
Charity called Carer’s Gloucestershire
and this was a fundraising event for
them. The carers look after people like
family members and friends who need
help to care for themselves.
Orlando had some questions for
Nicholas;
-Have you got any pets?
Nicholas is just about to get a new
Pomeranian puppy and he showed us a
picture on his mobile.
-What is your favourite food?
He loves Asian food
-What do you like doing at home when
you’re not playing the piano?
He says he loves cooking and before he
was a piano player he was going to be
a chef. He loves eating and going out
for meals with friends. He also likes
watching films.
- What is your favourite children’s film?
Finding Nemo
-What did you like playing when you
were a child, and what were your
favourite toys?
Nicholas liked playing chase and ‘it’ with
his friends who lived in his street, and
his favourite toys were Furbies. He also
likes Lego and has a separator to help
him get the little bricks apart.
Can you drive a car or ride a bike?
Nicholas drives a car and he has
a special steering wheel with an
attachment for his little arm.
He used to ride a bike, but is not allowed
to now because his hand is insured to
play the piano and the insurers would
not let him risk it!
Well done .....

raised £11 for Allsorts by painting
pretty stones and selling them to
friends and neighbours.

Information/advice on new
Education, Health & Care Plans
Are you confused about what the changes
from ‘Statements’ to Education, Health &
Care Plans will mean for your child? Are
you uncertain about what CAFs are and
their relevance to your child or even if they
will still exist? Come along and Brit Fox
and Karen Young from GPPS will aim to
increase your knowledge and answer your
queries.
We had a useful session with Nikki
who gave us a preview of the new
website before it went live and noted
our responses, and she showed us the
welcome pack which will now be sent out
to new members.
We also met with Sheila and are working
on extending her muddy boot walking
programme. See the ‘Walk this way’ page
in this newsletter for further information.
We continue to feed back ideas to the
coordinators from members for trips and
outings.
We have agreed to represent Allsorts at
the new series of Gloucestershire Parent
Carer Forums. Two of us attended the first
which was held in March in Stroud. It
was a great opportunity to network with
other organisations we know about and to
meet with new ones.
We are also organising the next bucket
shake at Sainsbury’s, Dudbrige on Friday
13th June. Please come along if you can
and help us raise money for Allsorts.
Rachel has given us a good overview of
the many different methods of evaluation
that Allsorts needs to undertake to satisfy
our funders that we really respond to
what our members want and we are
working with the coordinators on some of
them. She has also kept us informed of
some of the links Allsorts has with other
organisations, especially the Mobiloo. The
Mobiloo is a revolutionary new vehicle
which has a toilet, changing bed and
hoist that will be available for hire by
individuals or organisations for use at any
event or day out (it’s expected to be on
the road in a couple of months). See Page
18 for more information.
It’s great being able to meet to discuss
such a wide range of topics and to get
an insider view of the work done by
our brilliant team of paid workers and
volunteers in delivering the growing
spectrum of services provided by Allsorts.

being ‘pinged’ into the air which is great
fun), exercises and some free bouncing.
We have off trampoline activities for nonbouncers including use of the Soundbeam.

The Mobiloo...
is a vehicle that enables all disabled children
& adults to use the toilet or be changed with
dignity and respect when they wish to go to
events and activities across Gloucestershire –
events from which they are too often excluded
by the absence of the necessary changing
facilities.
With an electric hoist and changing table as
well as a toilet and wash-basin, the Mobiloo
means that even those wheelchair-users with
the most complex requirements can get out
and about to enjoy the same opportunities as
everyone else.
The Mobiloo is based in the middle of the
county, just south of the Air Balloon roundabout
(A417) and a few miles south of Birdlip – about
15 minutes from Junction 11A of the M5.
This means they are well placed to get it to
anywhere in Gloucestershire – or, if you selfdrive, it is accessible from all over the county.
Sound it Out!
Workshops
Allsorts’ music & communication ‘Sound
it out!’ workshops are very popular. They
are held from 1pm until 3.30pm at The
Exchange, Brick Row, Stroud, GL5 1DF
on Saturdays 3rd May, 26th July. The fun
workshop is a communication & musical
interaction group session with Gary from
Reachin’ Thru Music and is open to any
age child of any ability.
Lots of fun, stories, music for all tastes &
ages and singing (& dancing should the
mood take you!)
Refreshments are provided and it’s all
FREE to Allsorts members. We would
love to see you. Please contact Nikki on
07582 378422 or at nikki@allsortsglos.
