Peace & Love. War & hatred. Far out trips & really far out trips.
The turbulent decade of the 1960s crested in 1968.
The year saw the peak of the Vietnam War, the
assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and
Robert F. Kennedy, riots at the Democratic National
Convention, assertions of Black Power at the Olympic
Games, and feminist demonstrations at the Miss
America pageant. The year ended with images of
Earth beamed back from space for the first time.
Beginning Feb. 1, 2013, the History Center’s upcoming
exhibition, 1968: The Year That Rocked America,
will chronicle this pivotal year in American history.
Created in partnership with the Minnesota Historical
Society, this major traveling exhibit will feature stateof-the-art multimedia displays and evocative objects
from this turning point for a generation coming of age
and a nation at war.
Visitors can experience the sights, sounds, and music
that helped to make 1968 one of our nation’s most
explosive years – the musical “Hair” opened on
Broadway, the hit TV show “Laugh-In” debuted while the
original “Star Trek” series came to an end, and Dustin
Hoffman’s “The Graduate” picked up Oscars.
The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
album won a Grammy while Janis Joplin, The Doors, and
the Rolling Stones continued to make rock ‘n roll history.
Special Programs
Document African
American History
This past summer, African American culinary
historian Michael Twitty demonstrated how
freedom-seeking slaves used natural resources
for nourishment as part of a special event at
Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village.
Twitty prepared hominy with okra, hoe cakes,
sweet potatoes, and chicken stew for visitors using
the same cooking utensils that enslaved Africans
would have used more than 150 years ago.
A film series and other programs are being planned
in conjunction with the upcoming From Slavery to
Freedom exhibition. For more information on the
From Slavery to Freedom exhibit and related events,
please contact Samuel W. Black, director of the African
American Program at the History Center, at

life-sized replica of the Apollo 8 space capsule, view
campaign memorabilia from the turbulent 1968 elections,
and see draft cards from the Vietnam War and the torch

As part of the 1968 exhibit, the History Center will
display a part of the original set and related items
from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” which was
broadcast nationally for the first time in 1968.

150th Anniversary of Allegheny Arsenal Explosion
On the afternoon of Sept. 17, 1862, the community of Lawrenceville suffered an
unspeakable tragedy. A series of explosions ripped through the Allegheny Arsenal,
where many of the community’s women and girls worked to make gunpowder cartridges
and munitions for use by the Union Army. When the dust settled, 78 people, mostly
women and girls, lost their lives during the worst civilian disaster of the Civil War.
Although the tragedy was thoroughly investigated,
the cause of the blast remains unknown. Was it the
negligent handling of gunpowder or static electricity
from the young girls’ skirts that caused a spark that
triggered the blast? Or was the explosion the result of
a horseshoe scraping the powder-laden cobblestone
streets near the Arsenal? Did a young boy’s lit cigar
ignite the flame or was it Confederate sabotage?
A number of theories have been proposed in the 150
years following the explosion. These theories and
others were explored as part of a special “cold case”
inquest on Sept. 15 at the History Center to determine
412-454-6000
what caused the deadly explosion. Famed forensic
pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht conducted the inquest
and examined the evidence with explosive experts,
clothing historians, and munitions experts.

Arsenal inquest, presented in partnership with
the Lawrenceville Historical Society, and for more

Meadowcroft’s Annual American
Indian Heritage Weekend
Visitors to Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village
got a firsthand look at the everyday lives of 16th century
American Indians as part of the fourth annual American
Indian Heritage Weekend this September.
The popular weekend featured a variety
of re-enactors who demonstrated
traditional American Indian skills and
brought Meadowcroft’s 16th century
Indian Village to life.
Special presentations in the new
1770s Frontier Village highlighted the
similarities and differences between the
lives of American Indians and European
settlers in the Upper Ohio Valley.
Re-enactors also explained the
prehistoric and colonial era skills used
by American Indians, including fishing,
fire starting, hunting, and fur trading.
Visitors explored the interior of a wigwam,
inspected carefully recreated prehistoric
artifacts, learned about American Indian
agriculture, and tried using an atlatl, a
prehistoric spear-thrower.
Meadowcroft Rockshelter, a National
Historic Landmark and the oldest site
of human habitation in North America,
features a massive, 16,000-year-old
rock overhang used by the region’s
earliest inhabitants for shelter.
Many visitors took a step back in time at
Meadowcroft’s Historic Village, which
carefully recreates all of the charming
qualities of an Upper Ohio Valley
Village from the mid-19th century.
The American Indian Heritage
Weekend was sponsored by
Community Bank and Civil &
Environmental Consultants, Inc.
For more information about
Meadowcroft, call 724-587-3412 or visit
www.heinzhistorycenter.org and
click on the Meadowcroft tab.
Sign up now for an exclusive Insider Tour of the Meadowcroft Rockshelter
with James M. Adovasio, Ph.D., who achieved international acclaim with his
archeological excavation of the Rockshelter in 1973. Dr. Adovasio will present
a lecture and lead a special tour of the site on Nov. 3. For reservations, please
contact Frances Skariot at 724-587-3412 or [email protected].
Fort Pitt Museum Welcomes New Artifacts
Throughout the late 18th
and early 19th centuries,
hunting shirts were used
by hunters and woodsmen
to protect their clothing
worn underneath. This shirt,
constructed of red linseywoolsey material, is believed
to have belonged to pioneer
Michael Crow and is one of
only four hunting shirts from
this period known to exist.
Visitors to the Fort Pitt Museum in
historic Point State Park will enjoy
several new artifacts on display in the
updated second floor exhibit space.
Two new objects on loan from the
Fort Pitt Society of the Daughters of
the American Revolution include an
early 19th century painting depicting
the ruins of one of Fort Pitt’s stone
gunpowder magazines along with an
18th century stone sundial.
Also newly on display is a rare early
19th century hunting shirt, on loan
from the Greene County Historical
Society, one of only four known to exist
from the period.
This October, special Halloweenthemed walking tours are being
planned with the Fort Pitt Museum
and the Fort Pitt Blockhouse inside
Point State Park . For more information
on these “spooktacular” tours, please
contact Andrew Gaerte at 412-281-9284
or [email protected].
In 2013, the Fort Pitt Museum will
commemorate the 250th anniversary
of the end of the French & Indian War
and the Siege of Pittsburgh with special
events and exhibits.

8 The Newsletter of the Senator John Heinz History Center
This summer, a special members-only
behind-the-scenes event at the
Fort Pitt Museum allowed members to
observe how life-like museum figures
are created. Visitors witnessed how
the historical figures are cast from
molds of living volunteers and learned
about the custom-made 18th century
clothing used for the figures.
Re-enactors then loaded muskets and
fired them off the Fort Pitt Museum
deck. To join the ranks of history,
