Santa Catarina Market Address Avinguda de Francesc Cambó 16 08003 Barcelona Spain http://www.mercatsantacaterina.net/ . Wonderful Mercat Santa Caterina strikes a magical balance between local producers and consumers, contemporary architecture and tourism. The redevelopment retains its original use as a retail food market. A huge, undulating canopy covers an existing, former rundown neo-classical market in a large square within sight of the gothic cathedral. The canopy consists of a mosaic of 325,000 vividly multicolored hexagonal Spanish tiles set in mortar, "whose various colors recall a sill life of produce." It is a view that will be particularly appreciated by the residents of the neighboring apartment blocks. The roof is supported on three primary clear-span trusses that cut through, up and over the roof. But, from below, it reads as an organic timber assembly. At the opposite end from the retained arcade, an irregular latticework of timber slats brings to mind an Indonesian village hall - a typically offbeat Miralles invention and a reminder that he worked on this design before his death in 2000. . The architects: "By changing just one of the sides of the courtyard and using the basement to improve communication and access, we have a very negotiable layout." The sheer glass wall off the courtyard comes as something of a rude shock. The left-hand side of the wall is of dark glass; the right-hand side, very slightly offset, is light. The wall cants out over the courtyard at an angle of 60 degrees. It’s part of an impressive cultural belt, near the Ramblas, which runs from the University of Barcelona, past the Biblioteca de Catalunya and the Gran Teatre del Liceu, to the Pompeu Fabra University and next to Meier's MACBA. . Hotel Room Mate Pau Address Carrer Fontanella 7 08010 Barcelona Spain http://pau.room-matehotels.com/ . 10 years after the opening of Barcelona’s Hotel Amrey Sant Pau, the Spanish-based hospitality group opened it’s second establishment, Room Mate Pau. The hotel, designed by renowned architect and interior designer Teresa Sapey, is decked out with vibrant color pallets, charismatic graphics, and cosmopolitan decor. Sapey’s reputation of using bright colors and bold objects in her designs is what made her a perfect choice for the lively Room Mate Pau Hotel. She was called upon by the owners to create a hotel that is both friendly and stylish. The building, which has just undergone a full restoration, now has an atrium full of piercing eye balls, and an elevator shaft outfitted with a huge mural of a ambiguous person wearing a houndstooth patterned dress coat. Spacey transformed large wall patterns into cool backdrops to unique and minimalistic furniture pieces that create a one of a kind experience for hotel guests. [text: knstrct.com] photo: . South-East Forum Coastal Park Address Rambla de Prim 1 08019 Barcelona Spain . The southeast coastal park and auditoria project was part of the infrastructure that the city of Barcelona had planned as the Host City for the International Forum of Cultures, held in 2004. The organisational prototype that the architect proposed for the park was borrowed from a frequent model in coastal areas; sand dunes. They are a form, a material organisation with little internal structure, merely sand, shaped by wind. The park provides open air auditoria and spaces for events and activities, wind protection and suitable habitats for vegetation. The park allows and encourages sports and leisure activities, from walking to running, biking, skateboarding and a series of performance and relaxing areas by a network of paths or activity zones. Views are deliberately controlled by the demarcation of these zones; narrow, focused views broaden to wide open views. photo: . Project is public! . . . . . . . The Forum Building is a triangular measuring 180 meters on each side and 25 meters in height, located within the triangle formed by the surrounding streets. It is considered by some to be an icon of the "New Barcelona ". However, local opinion on its aesthetic and functional merits is deeply divided. It was the symbol of the controversial 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures and the serious flaws that arose during its construction were widely covered in both the Spanish national and foreign press. It has lain empty since the Forum and is beginning to show marked deterioration. The building is structured around an auditorium with a capacity to hold 3,200 people. The seating is below the Forum Plaza level. The upper part is suspended from the triangular superstructure measuring 180 meters per side that covers the plaza, and rests on 17 pillars. From it, the exhibit hall and the roof of the auditorium are suspended. The exhibition hall covers nearly 5,000 m2. . Project is public! . This multi-purpose cultural building includes a very large auditorium, a multi-functional performing space, exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, and a restaurant and foyer, in addition to technical services, loading docks, storage spaces, and car parking on two levels. It was part of the controversial 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures in Barcelona and has 45 translucent halls, spread over 3 floors, 2 mezzanines and a basement. The CCIB and the neighboring building Forum Auditorium (by Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron), are linked to each other by a 20-meter-wide underground walkway. Diagonal Mar Park Address Av. Diagonal y Cinturón Ronda Litoral Barcelona Spain http://www.diagonalmar.com . It's design favours an interaction with the city. It is organised by following a series of paths, which similar to the branches of a tree, spread out in all directions. A type of Rambla, a main thoroughfare, connects La Diagonal directly to the nearby beach crossing the Litoral ring by means of a pedestrian bridge... and it transforms itself into a series of recreational tracks: to stroll, for skating, cycling, walking etc. A large area of water in which there are various fountains, the flow of water and the vegetation on its edges oxygenates the water. The presence of the water characterises the vegetation of the zone and the vegetation spreads following the direction of the shores near the sea and the lake. It is growing taller and denser until it reaches the adjacent streets. Small places are to be found on the edges of the park. Places where a series of large ceramic vases join with the existing vegetation, similar to the garden of a house. " Miralles Tagliabue". photo: TomAs Martinez Vallerga . Project is public! . ME Barcelona Hotel Address Carrer Pere IV 272 286 08005 Barcelona Spain http://www.me-barcelona.com/ . Initially known as Hotel Habitat Sky, the building was sold in 2008 to Melia Hotels. Hence, its name was changed to Hotel ME Barcelona. The hotel is thought of as a play of volumes. A cubic building acts as a counterpoint behind the tower, which is a rectangular parallelepiped cut lengthwise in two, with one of them half-shifted skywards. This rupture of the perfect geometric block creates a movement of form and volume that bestows an urban sense on the insertion of the tower in the horizontal city. The shifted half-volume creates the building's reference signs: down, the cantilever at 25 metres height that acts as a gateway; up, the crest in the skyline. The hotel's skin is made of micro-perforated aluminium behind a glass curtain wall, which gives the building the image of a bright metal needle. . Project is public! . . . . . . . "When I was a student at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB), Barceloneta was the subject of much conversation. Restaurants on the beach which later disappeared... narrow streets, cramped flats, the clothes hanging out on the balconies, the shops, the artisans' workshops... and its people, who talked, and still talk, fast and loud. The project meant a chance to go back to the neighbourhood in an interested manner; it was no longer a trip down there for fun, to discover its people, its bars, its smell... but rather a survey of the place with the object of identifying what would enable us to reveal its qualities and to describe it accurately for the purposes of a project. An attempt, ultimately, to explain a reality, to offer a new and fuller meaning to an architectural project, beyond resolving a programme or commission." Text by the architect. photo: Adrià Goula .
