From the Executive Director

Paul Henderson,
SCSCAI
Executive
Director
We have
approximately
300 full-time
and part-time
employees who
work diligently to
keep everything
functional and
attractive in
appearance.
O
ver the last four months I have inspected almost all of the
material assets of Sun City Summerlin. I have been very
impressed with the quality of our facilities. e Board of
Directors and the staff have done a wonderful job – over the years
– keeping everything serviced and maintained.
We have approximately 300 full-time and part-time employees
who work diligently to keep everything functional and attractive
in appearance.
Every day you can observe these team members assisting residents at the front office, cleaning up the roadways and roadside
landscaping, painting walls, inspecting properties to maintain our
high standards of quality and appearance for each neighborhood;
grooming the golf courses and the peripheral landscaping around
the golf courses and buildings, working to serve our guests at the
golf courses and restaurants; as well as helping to keep the game
rooms and meeting rooms clean and orderly. Clear and concise
information is provided through the Link and website, as well as
by the online Association e-blasts. Our Community Services and
Fitness departments manage the myriad social events and activities happening in Sun City, and Community Standards keeps us
all in compliance.
With that said, I would like to acknowledge the dedication
and commitment of all of Sun City Summerlin Community
Association employees and say THANK YOU! As the headline
attests, “Our People Are Our Greatest Asset,” and they – through
the guidance and direction of the Board of Directors – make Sun
City Summerlin the most attractive and appealing retirement
community in Nevada.
e more I meet and talk with our Association employees the
more I am impressed with their dedication. ey truly are working
hard to make your Association the best it can be.
Personally, I take great pride in working with our team and sincerely hope that you share that opinion.
TO ALL THE EMPLOYEES OF SUN CITY SUMMERLIN –
THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEDICATED SERVICE
TO OUR ASSOCIATION – PLEASE KNOW THAT
YOU ARE APPRECIATED.

PRESIDENT
President’s Message
The
Importance of
Committees
David Steinman,
President, SCSCAI
Board of Directors
Each member
of the Board
serves as a liaison
to the various
standing
committees
operating under
the governing
documents of
Sun City.
F
ebruary 24, 2016, signaled the termination
of the Board of Directors who have served
your community well over the last 12-month
period. A big “ ank You” should be extended to
Bruce Alitt, Leo Crawford and Glenda Rogers
for their service to the community. ey have
retired from the Board. e election on February
24 made ve people members of the Board for a
two-year term. ey include incumbents Ellen
Bachman and myself; Sue Papilion, former executive director of Sun City and a past Board
member; plus newcomers Richard Gluch and
Karl Weidemann.
Each member of the Board serves as a liaison
to the various standing committees operating
under the governing documents of Sun City. As
president of the Board, I have appointed members to the committees (see table below).
COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS
e appointed Board liaison may serve as
chairman of the standing committee, or a resident member may serve as chairman. e important issue of our committees is that they consist primarily of members of the community
who wish to be a part of the governing process
without serving on the Board. Committees
have speci c areas of responsibility of the operating functions of the community. ey review
matters in their area of responsibility and make
recommendations to the Board for action.
Can you serve on one of our Committees?
Yes, start by contacting the liaison listed below
who is in charge of the appropriate standing
committee where you believe your time and talent will be most helpful. I urge you to attend a
committee meeting and understand their functions. You may be surprised at the amount of
resident help we need to run this community.

f you are a new resident to Sun City, welcome. If not,
welcome to another year of enjoying the best of
amenities offered by Nevada’s largest homeowners’
association. With that status comes responsibility. To
ensure the smooth running of day-to-day operations, SCSCAI
(Sun City Summerlin Community Association, Inc.) relies
on residents to assist it in maintaining and building a better
community.
For those who may be contemplating a way to give back,
the following article offers a start to pinpointing an area
where you would like to concentrate your efforts. Along with
each description of the nine standing and one advisory committees, you will find the name and contact information for
the liaison appointed by the Board president. You may reach
out to any of the committee chairpersons with questions or
to find out more of what’s required to get started sharing
your time.
Architectural Review Committee (ARC)
Ken Caroccia, chairman,
[email protected] · 254-8852
The Architectural Review Committee
was established to maintain and
enforce the standards and guidelines set forth in the governing
documents to provide an orderly
and visually cohesive community.
It also provides a timely review of
all projects planned for the
community.
Two committee members are required to review applications. Committee members come
into the Community
Standards office on a
weekly basis to review
plans. All submissions
for room additions,
walls/fencing, patio
enclosures and patio
covers are reviewed
by the construction
sub-committee. These members physically view the property; check measurements, etc., before approving. If applications are denied, residents have the opportunity to
revise their plans or appeal to the committee at the next
scheduled ARC meeting. ARC members perform inspections 120 days after an application is approved.
Common Area Properties (CAP)
Sue Papilion, chairwoman · [email protected] · 838-9089
On a regular basis, members of the Common Area Properties Committee conduct thorough inspections of all the
Association’s real and personal property. The committee
determines and makes recommendations to the Board of
Directors that said property is maintained in a manner to
ensure safety of personnel, long life and efficient operation. The Committee consults with the executive director
on all individual purchases of machinery, electrical and
mechanical equipment. This applies to new and replacement equipment.

t’s springtime and the outdoor pools and spas
open April 1 for all to enjoy! Sun City
Summerlin’s four Fitness Centers, along with
two indoor swimming pools and three outdoor pools, are used daily by hundreds if
not thousands of residents who enjoy our
wonderful amenities. e Maintenance
and Landscape departments have been busy preparing for the upcoming pool season.
ose visiting the Pinnacle pool will notice
the lack of pine needles littering the poolside.
A few pine trees and several bushes were removed to help improve the pool environment.
We hope to have fewer bees after removing
some of the owering bushes that attract them;
residents will see a noticeable difference while
enjoying their time in the sun.
At Mountain Shadows, the pool bathrooms
have been updated with new tile and vanities
for a fresh, clean look, and the Maintenance
staff has repaired the pool decks at all of our
outdoor pools.
swimmers and divers rinse off as soon as they
exit the pool. Although chlorine (salt or liquid)
is necessary to keep the pools clean and sanitary,
showering after swimming will help keep your
skin and suit in healthier condition. No adult
disposable briefs are allowed to be worn in the
pool or spa.

OTHER FITNESS CENTER AND POOL RULES
Sun City Summerlin is made up of a wide variety of residents. We all share the facilities, and
there are rules in place to help make usage fair,
safe and enjoyable for all. Our pool rules are in
accordance with the SCSCAI Rules & Regulations and the Southern Nevada Health District.
Below are a few issues and rules that residents
question the Fitness staff about on a regular
basis. We hope this information helps all residents have a pleasant experience when visiting
the swimming pools.

Showering & Sanitation Laws: Showering
before entering the pool or spa is required by
the Southern Nevada Health District in order to
reduce contaminants brought into the pool and
spa. It is also highly recommended to rinse off
by showering after exiting the pool. You always
will see professional and Olympic-competitive
Pool Water & Bodily Fluids: Even with
nightly maintenance, it is important to maintain
the cleanliness of the pools and spas on a daily
basis. Association rules and the Health District
restrict individuals with any open sores from
entering a pool or spa. Regardless of where the
open sore is, on the top of the head or the bottom of the foot, residents with an open sore
may not enter the pool or spa water. For those
who like to spend hours walking in the pool,
please remember to vacate the pool often and
use the restroom. Studies show that urine combined with chlorine creates many health risks
for individuals. Please use good hygiene and do
not urinate in the pools or spas.
w Residents must be present to check in their
guests.
w Street shoes are not allowed in the pools or
pool areas. Clean pool shoes are acceptable.
w Persons with a cold, cough, sore or in amed
eyes, any skin or communicable disease, or
with open sores or bandages must not enter
the pool or spa.
w Children (under 19) must be 42 inches tall
(without shoes) to use the pool, and must be
supervised by an adult at all times. Children (under 19) are not allowed in the spas.
In order for all residents to enjoy their experience at the pools, we suggest picking up a rule
pamphlet from the Fitness Monitor desk and
being familiar with pool rules and water classes
that may be using the pools at certain times.

How to
Work Your
Core –
Part 1
Charli Sue Douglass
SCSCAI Fitness
Specialist, CPFT, GFI
Y
our core is made up of many muscles that
work to hold your body erect while standing and sitting. Your core includes the abdominals, back extensors, mid-back muscles and
obliques, to name a few. To strengthen your core
and create better posture, you need to work all the
muscles that support the movements that your
core can do. For example, our obliques are used
for rotation and turning from side to side. Back
extensors are used for keeping our bodies upright.
Residents in the tness center love to use the
ab crunch strength machine. However, many
don’t use it correctly and rely on only this one
exercise for their core workout. e ab crunch is
only one exercise of many that your body needs
to do to create a core that is worth its power to
keep you standing upright and straight. A
proper core workout will guard against a
rounded posture and weak back muscles.
Crunches only use the rectus abdominis muscle that runs vertically from rib cage to pelvic
bone. When you do endless crunches it does
not shrink your waistline. It may actually make
your stomach stick out and create more rounded
shoulders as the muscle gets stronger and shortens from the load.
How to use the ab crunch: Be sure to line up
your hips with the pivot point of the machine.
Keep your spine straight as you move the chest
plate forward (Picture 1). Draw in your belly button to engage the rectus abdominis and move
30 degrees forward (Picture 2). If you are bending forward 45 or more degrees, you are no longer doing an effective crunch.
In the coming months, I will share how to
use rotation movements and low back exercises
to help stabilize and strengthen your core.

Do You Know?
Do you know that any Sun City Summerlin resident with a valid Sun City Summerlin Association ID card is permitted to use our arts and
crafts facilities whether or not he or she is a
member of a club?
As stated in our Sun City Summerlin rules
and regulations, the equipment must be available to all residents during “open times” when
there are no club events scheduled. Club membership is not required. However, many of
these facilities have safety and proficiency
tests, or checks to ensure all (members and
non-members alike) know how to use and
care for the clubs’ equipment properly. Also,
clubs may charge non-members a nominal
amount to help maintain and replace
equipment as needed.

S
un City resident Johanna Trettin was
born in 1927 in Indonesia. She came
from a Dutch Indonesian family and
lived on the island of Java, where she had been
living in a nice house
with her mother and
father before World
War II broke out. During the war, Johanna
recalled that the Europeans living in Java were
declared prisoners of
war and held in refugee
camps.
In the years following the war, Johanna met
Willy, her rst husband, and in 1951 they had
two daughters, Hellen and Irene. Willy died in
an automobile accident shortly thereafter.
Irene Denny, Johanna’s eldest daughter, moved
to Sun City two years ago from Colorado to be
closer to her parents. Irene revels in the fact that
her family enjoys ve living generations today.
In 2003, Irene said her family lost a generation when her grandmother died, but regained the
status 10 years later with the birth of Johanna’s
great-great-grandson, Blake McDonald in 2013.
Now that she is retired, Irene looks forward
to the day when she can return to the island to
see how much or how little it has changed.
Looking back over her family’s history,
Irene said, “All ve children agree that the best
thing our parents did was bring our family to
the United States.”
Irene recalled it was after her father’s death
that her family was deported to the Netherlands, even though none of them had ever been
to their home country. At that point they were
literally people without a country, she said.
Moving from the warm, tropical climate of
Java to the contrasting cold of the Netherlands
took quite getting used to, Irene said. It was in
the Netherlands that Irene said her mother
married her second husband, Hermann. e
two were married for 63 years until his passing
last year. Together, Johanna and Hermann had
three children – Ron, Micki, and after immigrating to the United States, Sandi, who was
the only United States citizen born into the
second generation.
For three years, Irene said, the family endured
the wet weather in Seattle, where they had landed after arriving from the Netherlands in 1961.
ree years later, in 1964, they relocated to Los
Angeles, and back to warmer weather.
Hermann and Johanna eventually retired
and moved to Sun City Summerlin in 1992.
Of her mother, Irene said, “She is the proud
matriarch of ve generations. She was born in
Indonesia and is a mother, a grandmother, a
great-grandmother, a great-great grandmother
and a widow, who has resided in Sun City for
the past 24 years.”
e other four generations include: Irene,
who was licensed as a real estate agent in California and Colorado; Irene’s daughter Michelle
Rademacher, who represents the rst of the third
generation born in the United States and lives in
Palmdale, California, where she is a project manager for Lockheed Martin of Southern California; Michelle’s daughter, Jacqueline McDonald,
a mother and wife, who lives in Sacramento,
California; and Jacqueline’s 2-year-old Blake.

GARFUNKEL”
Saturday, April 16, 7 p.m. · $22
e magic of this iconic duo is reimagined in impeccable vocal harmony. AJ Swearingen and
Kelli re-create the music, memories and magic of the most famous folk-rock duo of our time,
Simon and Garfunkel. Swearingen has been performing this music for 20 years with the
mastery of Paul Simon’s intricate guitar playing. His deep baritone blends perfectly against
Kelli’s angelic vocals that invoke a true sound in the spirit of Art Garfunkel. e duo has been
performing since 2010. Together and separately they have shared the stage with Kenny Rogers,
Crystal Gayle, Livingston Taylor, John McCutcheon and more. Two voices in perfect harmony
balanced against one acoustic guitar delivers a true tribute to the sound of the 1960’s Greenwich
Village coffeehouse performances.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT: Model Builders Club
Crafters Reveal Master Level of Expertise
Photos by Dean Otteson/Model Builders Club
T
he month of April will feature the Model Builders Club
in the display windows at Mountain Shadows community center lobby. Throughout the year, each one
of the crafts clubs is featured for a month, allowing members to show off their creations in the three display cases.
The Model Builders Club is a very diverse group of clever
and creative artisans. The centerpiece of the club is its extensive HO model train layout (one of the largest in Nevada).
But there is a whole lot more, including doll houses and
miniature furniture, detailed leather craft, and fabulous
wood carving, in addition to classic model cars, military
vehicles and model ships. The display cases will include
model ships by Glenn Williams, Bob Sylveter and Bruce
Adams. Ernie Tomey will display his classic motor cars
and Bernie Karpel will show off his award-winning skills
in model military vehicles. There is also fabulous leather
work by Laurence Curtis, Glenn Latta and Bill Winchester,
and very creative and diverse wood carvings by Dean
Otteson, Tony Giuffrida and Mel Turner. And, for the first
time, the club will display some of the beautiful miniature
doll house furnishings and accessories built by Vicki
Ashenfelter and Edie Bush.
The Model Builders Club is located in the crafts wing
of the Desert Vista community center. The Club is always
open for visitors and welcomes new members, especially
beginners (or those whose skills are a “little rusty”). For
information, call Club President Bruce Adams, 463-9921.

Club Spotlight: Aquacize · Pool Classes Enable Easier Movement
The Aquacize Club was formed in 1990 and currently has 173
members, making it one of the largest chartered clubs in Sun
City. The current president is Marianne Jagmin.
The Club was formed in order to allow people to do a daily
aerobic exercise in the water, which is less strenuous on the
joints.
The Club offers four 45-minute programs each day for six
days a week. There are classes at Desert Vista, Sun Shadows
and Mountain Shadows. (For class times, please refer to the
pool schedule page 20.)
The 7 p.m. class at Desert Vista has a volunteer instructor,
Richard Adkins, who leads the class in the workout.

over 90!
The social aspect of the club is very extensive. The
members meet quarterly and always include a summer pot
luck party (celebrating the Fourth of July at the Desert Vista
outdoor pool). They also have a Halloween pizza party, a
Christmas party luncheon and a Valentine's party. The
members go to plays on a regular basis (“My Fair Lady” is
scheduled for April 7 at $25 per person.)
In addition to the exercise and socializing, the Aquacize
Club presents speakers or entertainment at each meeting.
Club dues are $10 per year for all that fun.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT: WateRobics
Add a Splash to Your Day
Would you like to get into an exercise routine but feel
limited by stiffness or a lack of mobility? There is a way
to build strength that is easy on the joints, increases
flexibility, burns calories, has a positive effect on bone
density and is heart-healthy. It’s water aerobics.
The pool provides a relaxing environment for exercising and, as summer approaches, a respite from the heat.
The water supports the body so you don’t have to worry
about falling, and it helps alleviate the feelings of fatigue.
Sun City WateRobics Club President Joan Lambert
has been a participant for 23 years. “It keeps me healthy,
makes me feel better, and keeps me young,” she said.
Member Barb Barcus also extolled the virtues of
water workouts: “It’s a good way to move your body
without stress. It’s fun and relaxing, and a neat way to
exercise.”
Ardath Hansen has been participating in the club for
13 years. When she started, she could barely walk due to
a stroke. She credits her remarkable increased mobility
to water aerobics.
Judith Shellabarger has been a member for 16 years
and says, “It makes you feel great!”
The club offers classes eight times a week at Sun
Shadows, Monday through Friday, from 9 to 9:45 a.m.;
Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, from 1 to 1:45 p.m.
Yearly dues are $110 and are prorated.
For more information on the club, or to join, call Joan
Lambert, 228-2060.
