The common cattle in today’s beef industry are bought and sold based mainly off of their physical appearance or conformation. But, beauty is only skin deep. Kallion Farms Brahman cattle are not common, they are exceptional. We test our cattle for genetic superiority in Marbling, Tenderness and Feed Efficiency. We also test our cattle for live carcass quality through ultrasound technology and actual carcass quality through extensive product analysis. What it comes down to is, our cattle are bred for BEEF. This combination of traits is passed from generation to generation, improving the consistency of our product. Being a BEEF producer means much more than having pretty cattle. You have to be able to know they will produce for both your program, as well as meet the expectations of the end consumer. Brahman cattle are BEEF animals and at Kallion Farms we are proving it. As the host city for the 16th World Brahman Congress, Panama City, Panama will be "the place to be" for Brahman Breeder's from July 2 through July 7, 2012. The Brahman Journal is especially excited about this World Brahman Congress, as we have traveled extensively to Panama over the last 5 years visiting Panamanian Brahman Breeders and have enjoyed learning about the country. We look forward to providing you news and information to help make your visit to Panama extra special. Where will the congress be held The Congress will be held at the Atlapa Convention Center in Panama City. Atlapa is a very important convention center in Panama. The center itself is situated on 8-acres. This fabulous complex borders the Pacific Ocean and is easily accessible from Tocumen International Airport and only minutes away from major hotels. A map of the event is on page 7. Where to stay If you have not made your hotel accommodations for The World Brahman Congress now is the time to make reservations. On page 18 you will find a Hotel Registration form. The current hotels that are listed for The World Brahman Congress are Hotel Panama, Hotel Continental and Hotel Manrey. The Hotel Panama, or Hotel El Panama, Convention Center and Casino is a 5-star luxury hotel in the heart of downtown Panama City, approximately 10 minutes from the Atlapa Convention Center. The hotel is part of the Summit Hotels & Resorts group, which is known for its global network of luxury hotels. The history behind the Panama Hotel is interesting. In 1946 a group of visionary businessmen decided to buy a plot of land of more than 60 hectares in the area known as “El Cangrejo”. The President of Panama at that time was Mr. Enrique Jimenez, who asked the buyers to donate part of this land to create what is now known as the University of Panama. Jimenez also asked them to sell six of their best acres to a company named “Hoteles Interamericanos”. This is where the first large hotel at that time would be built: El Panama. Construction on the hotel started in September of 1946 and was not completed until 1951. The hotel was closed for a few years and was was reopened with new management that modernized its operational structure and technology. Today, the El Panama welcomes guests from around the world with its distinctive accommodations and Latin flair. If you choose to stay at Hotel El Panama we know you will be well taken care of, as it is the "Host Hotel" for The World Brahman Congress. The Continental Hotel & Casino is also conveniently located in the heart of Panama City, approximately 13 minutes from the Atlapa Convention Center. The Continental Hotel is a tropical oasis offering upscale accommodations and modern amenities. The hotel features an 6 | The Brahman Journal 40 th A nniver sary open architecture accented with fragrant roses, a wonderful place to relax after attending seminars and judging at the Congress. The hotel includes a Las Vegas style casino, a beautiful swimming pool featuring a cascading fountain, shopping arcade and a gift shop. If you make The Continental Hotel your "home" while at the Congress, make sure to visit the Wurlitz Lobby Bar, where you can experience music played on the renowned and exceptional Wurlitzer pipe organ. The Hotel Manrey is about 11 minutes from the Convention Center, located in the heart of the financial and entertainment district of the city. There are many restaurants and lots of nightlife both within the hotel, as well as just steps away from the lobby. Manrey is a newly constructed 4.5 star boutique hotel with 36 rooms. The ultra-modern lobby is decorated with low-slung tables containing oversized art-books from Taschen. It has been written up in Glamour Magazine and this luxury hotel offers a poolside bar, a bar/lounge a french restaurant and more. I trust that everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season and enjoyed plenty of food and fellowship. As we begin 2012, we are gearing up for another fast paced year with numerous Brahman activities. In a few weeks, these activities begin with the Winter Board of Directors Meeting in Ft. Worth, Texas, in addition to several shows across the country. Be sure to check the Calendar of Events as the ABBA and its affiliates have a number of activities planned for the coming year. As we start a New Year this also provides an opportunity for us to look forward and make plans and set goals. I encourage you to set some goals for your operation and what you would like to achieve over the next twelve months. I hope you set some aggressive but realistic goals that will help further your program and ultimately the breed. I realize that sometimes your best made plan can be challenged by something out of your control, but it is worthwhile to set the goal and do your best to achieve it. I mentioned earlier that your ABBA leadership will be meeting in Ft. Worth in a few weeks. This will provide an opportunity to set goals and further carry out plans for the betterment of the breed and ABBA. As we enter 2012 there seems to be much excitement in the breed as the best is still to come with the re-establishment of the cow herd and the shift to more adaptable and efficient cattle. I look forward to the coming year and the many positive opportunities that will be presented to Brahman breeders. As we look forward to the end of the month I encourage you to participate in a very important part of ABBA and this is the Board of Directors elections. Many times I am asked who makes the rules and policies for ABBA. The answer is the ABBA Board of Directors that you elect as your representation. This election is your opportunity to affect the way your organization is operated. The deadline to submit your ballot is February 1. Be sure to be a part of this important process. I hope each of you have a great January and get your year started right. We have a great year ahead of us and I look forward to experiencing it with you. See You Down the Road! My younger brother, Cooper, and I have shown Brahman cattle for four years. Showing Brahman cattle has allowed my family to spend quality time together. In my opinion, the TJBA (Texas Junior Brahman Association) and AJBA (American Junior Brahman Association) rank among the best organizations around. The TJBA and AJBA offer many different contests for members to participate in. These contests offer members opportunities to win outside the show ring. Cooper and I also show market hogs and broilers but Brahman cattle are our favorite animals to show. Showing Brahman cattle has opened up many doors for me from meeting many new and friendly people to winning the first Herd Building Bull. Winning this bull has allowed me to start my own F1 program and a pure bred breeding program. My Livestock Judging skills, fine tuned through the TJBA contests, helped me pick out my show heifers. By doing the Public Speaking and Sales Talk contest I have become more outgoing and self confident. Showing Brahman cattle is fun, challenging, and competitive. I discovered the strength of the friendship bond between competitors when last fall my father had a massive heart attack. The outpouring of phone calls, prayers, and offers to help out amazed me. He had surgery in February and is doing better now. I invite anyone that is interested in showing cattle to come to a Brahman show and look me up. I will gladly introduce you to my Brahman friends and breeders. I look forward to meeting new members and seeing my friends at the up coming shows. Breeding Top-Quality Brahman and F-1 Cattle And Performance-Bred Cutting Horses Box 129, Madisonville, Texas 77864 Ranch located just west of Madisonville on FM 1452 Ernest Cannon, Owner • Steven Trichel, Manager: 936-348-4116 w w w.j-fr a nch.com Carolyn Falgout of K Bar Farms was pleasantly surprised in November when she was honored by the Florida Parish Arena in Amite, Louisiana. Falgout was honored along with two other lifelong supporters of local agriculture, Thomas Wesley Ridgedell and Senator Ben Wayne Nevers by being added to the Florida Parish Wall of Fame. It was a real surprise, as each honoree was invited and told that one of the other recipients was being honored that day. Falgout was pleased when she realized she was receiving an award, “I really thought I was there to watch my friends receive a special award and I was so surprised when they started talking about me and my experiences.” These leaders were chosen to be honored and added to the Florida Parish Arena Wall of Fame for their commitment to the creation and promotion of the Florida Parish Arena. Raised on a dairy farm, Falgout grew up in the cattle business and was a competitive barrel racer. Moving to Amite with her husband Linny 30 years ago, Falgout established her K-Bar farms, where she is well known for breeding top quality Brahman cattle. Traveling the globe as a Brahman breeder, Falgout was the first woman to ever judge a Brahman cattle show in Thailand. Falgout is also known for her work in the oyster industry. But it is her ties to home and her hard work for the local arena that has made a lasting mark on the community. Falgout has been tireless in her promotion of the arena and her help in securing funds to build the first of many additions to the facility, an outdoor classroom. Falgout received a framed commemorative wall hanging, which included her photograph and a biography detailing her support for and personal accomplishments within the industry. br ahmanjournal . com January 2012 | 23 l a hacienda esperanZa Field day » OUR FABULOUS HOSTESS AND HOST, REGINA & RAIMUNDO RIOJAS OF HACIENDA LA ESPERANZA, GUATEMALA, ENJOyED VISITING WITH BRAHMAN BREEDERS GUSTAVO AND MARLA ARGUELLO OF GANADERIA EL ROSARIO, NICARAGUA. » BRAHMAN BREEDERS THE WORLD OVER ENJOyED A GREAT FIELD DAy! » JUDD AND GAyLA CULLERS LOOkED LIkE MOVIE STARS WHILE ATTENDING HACIENDA LA ESPERANZA FIELD DAy. » GAyLA CULLERS, HERITAGE CATTLE COMPANy OF TEXAS, ENJOyED TOURING THE RANCH AND SEEING THE OUTSTANDING BRAHMAN CATTLE OF LA HACIENDA ESPERANZA WITH OWNER REGINA RIOJAS. » DR.
