And, if you know your catalog, you know all about the categories which make up the Gold Canyon® scent lineup. Now let’s dig a bit deeper and find out more about why our (and your) scents are truly “The World’s Finest”®. In the process, you’ll be empowered with the extra knowledge you need to be the expert your customers expect you to be. Did you know fragrances are created by combining natural and/or synthetic ingredients? Gold Canyon uses only the highest quality blend of both kinds of these oils in creating the finest fragrances. Several fragrance families are used to create our signature scents. These in combination with specific fragrance notes (which we’ll talk about shortly) are the foundations of great fragrance. The information below will help you become more familiar with some of the common fragrance families. Citrus: These notes can be tart or tangy and consist of citrus fruits like grapefruits, lemons, limes and oranges. Herbs & Greens: These notes smell fresh and natural and are made up of greens like foliage and grasses and herbs like mint and eucalyptus. Fruity: These notes can be sweet and juicy and consist of fruits like apples, berries and melons. Floral: These notes can be delicate and sweet and are made up of flowers like jasmine, lilac and rose. 4 Gourmand: These notes are rich and creamy. They consist of edibles like vanilla and caramel. Musk: These notes are powdery with hints of sweet and are used in most fragrances as a preservative. Spice: These notes are bold and rich and consist of spices like cinnamon and clove. Ozonic: These notes are very outdoorsy and fresh and are made up of natural items like marine and air. Woody: These notes are natural and earthy and are made of trees like cedar wood and balsam. In addition, and what you’ve probably already experienced as a Gold Canyon® Consultant, higher quality scents like ours combine elements from multiple note categories. These layers of fragrance notes, from the lighter citrus or ozonic top notes to the fruity and floral soul in the middle and grounding bottom musky or woody notes that linger, are formulated to provide an authentic, uniquely Gold Canyon scent from the truly memorable to the right on trend. It’s all to achieve our goal of A Happy Fragrance Experience™ for your customers, season after season and year after year. Turn to page 33 for this season’s scent details and similar scent references. 5 all about candles WHY candles? Whether it’s Heritage® Diamond-Light™, our Lumie™ Collection, VoLights™ or Tealights, there’s more to Gold Canyon® Candles than meets the eye (or the nose). It’s the perfect combination of all elements, from amazing scents and colors to the right wick with the right wax that ensures you’ll always have A Happy Fragrance Experience™. These carefully choreographed combinations give our candles the signature beauty, strength and consistent, even burn you’ve come to know and LOVE. First, we start with carefully selected scents composed of the highest quality materials. Next, we use both food-grade paraffin wax, specially formulated to burn cleanly which means they have virtually no effect on your air quality and do little harm—if any—to the environment. If you can resist burning them the minute you get them, your candles are best used within a year of purchase for the very best fragrance throw. For you Ms. Science types, you’ll be interested to know more about the kinds of waxes you will see. Food-Grade Paraffin Wax Used in the majority of Gold Canyon’s Candle products, paraffin comes from companies that manufacture food-grade paraffin as a primary product and from refineries as a byproduct. Our paraffin wax does not contain genetically modified (GM or GMO) material. Whether it’s zinc core or cotton, all our wicks are made in the USA and feature a “safety collar”; that’s just a fancy way to say that when you are following our prescribed candle safety instructions and your candle burns down to that last quarter of an inch, the wick will self-extinguish to prevent broken glass and spilt wax. Put all of these ingredients together and you can rest assured our amazing scents, high- quality wax blend and double wicks ensure our candles provide a consistent, quality fragrance and long burning time. 6 Once we’ve chosen the kind of wick and wax, it’s time to mix up the magic! What makes an ordinary home-cooked meal taste extraordinary? Seasonings! Wax additives could be described as the seasonings in a candle recipe. There are hundreds of different additives available to use, each affecting the outcome and the degree of the fragrance. Check out the Scent ID™ section to go deeper in to how it all comes together. Basic Candle Anatomy Soft paraffin wax blend is specially designed for high fragrance load. Zinc core wicks (made in the USA) with a safety collar that extinguishes itself at the appropriate level. VoLights™ have cotton wicks. Bottom warning label which includes care and safety instructions, fragrance name, candle size, item number, lot number and the Gold Canyon® website. Some candles also include decorative labels, shrink wrap, lids or other decorative details. Your current catalog is your best resource for the most up-to-date information on candle assortments and fragrances. Continue on for a closer look at each candle line! 7 Heritage® This is the candle that started it all. Available in four sizes and every scent, Heritage Diamond-Light™ is the ultimate statement of fragrance and color. And don’t worry about choice overload! 79 amazing fragrances (including Heritage Occasion) in 6 fragrances categories is the perfect number to woo new customers and satisfy loyal Gold Canyon fans. We like to call it candle perfection!! Our Lumie Collection gives your customers the ability to choose from 3 fragrances inspired by each Lumie design to create the perfect scent/style candle just for her. VoLights™ Affectionately known as “teenies”, three of these little guys combined equal 60 hours of fragrance. The combination of 25 core favorite fragrances and 25 seasonal fragrances make VoLights the perfect choice to compliment Lumies and Heritage scents. Tealights Though not part of our “Simple Sell System™, you can’t help but love ‘em! These candle staples are offered in our 25 seasonal scents. Check your catalog for the current offering. 8 the HOW to: Prior to Lighting Never pick up candles by the lid. The best way to pick up a candle is to place one hand around the neck of the jar, while the other hand supports the bottom of the jar. Read the instructions on the bottom label of the candles. The instructions are placed there as a precaution for burning candles. When applicable, remove decorative accents prior to lighting. Trim wicks to 1/4 inch prior to lighting, but do not drop trimmings into the candle. Long wicks may create too much heat on the glass, potentially causing it to shatter. When Burning Burn on a heat resistant surface and use holders to protect the surfaces of tabletops and shelves underneath the candle. To prevent fire, burn the candle within sight, out of the reach of children and pets and away from drafts and anything that may catch fire. Burn long enough to liquefy the entire top layer of wax, not to exceed four hours. If you want to burn a candle longer, extinguish the candle, trim the wick down to 1/4 inch and relight. A special note about VoLights™ Always burn VoLights in approved Gold Canyon wraps, bases & stands to ensure safety and prevent overheating the plastic cup. Allow 2” between candles when placing more than one VoLight together. Do not burn VoLights for more than 2 hours at time. Keep wicks trimmed to 1/4” and do not drop foreign matter or wick trimmings in to candle and remove large deposits formed on wick. For best performance and safety, follow the safety instructions on the bottom label or packaging. 9 Handle candles carefully during use and immediately after extinguishing. The glass will be hot. Discontinue burning when 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. Gold Canyon® has factored this 1/2 inch of wax into our burn time calculations and candle volume measurements. Use a Wick Dipper to extinguish flames to prevent residual smoke and splattered wax. The coating of wax also makes the wick easier to relight. Cleaning Your Candle If the waxy part of your candle has gotten dirty, wipe it down with a slightly damp cloth. Never use a cleaning product directly on the wax as it may cause a safety hazard the next time you light your candle. Black soot on the jars can be caused by any number of reasons, including untrimmed wicks and burning a candle in a draft, or near, or below a fan. Soot can be removed with glass cleaner and paper towels. Oops—did you have a wax spill? Wax is easily removed with our wax remover (see catalog for details). Candle Storage Store your candles in a temperature-controlled environment (65°-80°F). Candles begin to melt at approximately 150°F. If candles get too cold, at approximately 65°F, the wax may shrink and pull away from the glass. This only affects the appearance—not the quality of the burn or the fragrance. Do not expose candles to direct sunlight or fluorescent light; it will discolor the candles over time. Easy Peasy! Now you’re in the know! 10 don’t blow it EXCLUSIVE Wick Sitters™ the clever way to care for your Gold Canyon candles. Wick Sitters dip the wick and then “sit” on large Heritage jars and Lumie glass. It’s a fun new way to express stylish care. Choose from Candy Cane or Questamation. 11 wonderful & wickless WHY wickless? Although we’d like to believe there aren’t many reasons why, sometimes you just need fabulous scents without the flames. We may have started it all with candles, but over the years we’ve learned that amazing scents deserve to be delivered in a variety of applications. The glow of candlelight is great, but you can’t exactly take one with you! And what about those kiddy rooms (big and small)? That’s why we have a product for every situation and lifestyle; you never have to be without a Gold Canyon® scent! 12 Scent Pods® and Warmers WHY Gold Canyon® Warmers? Gold Canyon’s patented technology is our (better) answer to melted wax fragrance systems. We use safe, low temperature wax in a reusable container. No more digging out fragrance and cleaning and cleaning (and cleaning) the wax out of the melting dish. Switch out your Scent Pod in moments without the mess and frustration. Our scent offering for Scent Pods is second only to Heritage®, so be sure to check your current catalog for all the details on available scents. Finding your style with Scent Pod Warmers couldn’t be easier! Our collection always includes numerous choices of classic and themed styles to meet your every décor whim. The collection includes the smallest of Warmers for small spaces, desktops and dressers as well as larger décor statement pieces. Décor styled Warmers include a deep dish that hides the Scent Pod and lets your Warmer sit beautifully next to treasured vases and stylish accents. Refer to your catalog for the current assortment of Warmers. 13 the HOW to: Scent Pod®, Remove the Scent Pod lid and place in your Scent Pod Warmer. Scent Pods will disperse fragrance for up to 20 hours. The wax won’t show it, so if you can’t smell it anymore, it’s time for a new one. Replace the lid when you want to switch it out for a new scent. And when the fragrance is gone, clean the wax out, wash and reuse. Scent Pod containers comply with FDA food storage regulations and are BPA free. Use them as a little snack, craft or collectible storage container . Scent Pods must be stored in a temperature-controlled environment (70°-80°F). The wax begins to melt at approximately 150°F. Do not expose Scent Pods to direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will discolor the Scent Pod as will exposure to fluorescent lighting over time. Scent Pod Warmers Plug in your Warmer and place the Warmer on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Remove the lid from your Scent Pod and place on the heating surface of your Warmer. Turn on the Warmer by pressing the power/timer switch on the power cord. A red light will indicate the Warmer is on. To activate the automatic shutoff feature, press the power/timer switch once more for four hours, twice more for eight hours and three more times for 12 hours. A green light will indicate the automatic shutoff is activated and for how long. For optimal fragrance dispersion, please use Scent Pods in 4-hour increments. It is recommended to discard and replace your Scent Pod after 20 hours of total use. MORE Every Warmer is CSA® Safety Certified. You will never see exposed components or a low quality base on our Warmers. The electrical components of each Warmer are warrantied for one year from the date code on the bottom of the unit. Do not touch or move the unit until cool and wax has become solid. Do not use if chipped or cracked. Only Gold Canyon® Scent Pods or Scent Mix Brix are suitable for use with Gold Canyon Scent Pod Warmers. Ensure the unit is turned off before removing the plug from wall outlet. If it becomes dirty, wipe down your Warmer with a damp cloth or paper towel. 14 Scentric™ Electric Scent WHY Scentric? Call it too busy, overworked or simply overloaded. Solution: meet electric scent the Gold Canyon® way. Scentric is the answer to delivering a subtle fragrance 24/7. Plug it in and forget it for up to 30 days of fragrance delivery. The Scentric fragrance system is designed to diffuse scent subtly; creating a signature home fragrance essence that isn’t overpowering and allows for layering of your other Gold Canyon scents. Exclusive to Gold Canyon, the unit is customized with Gold Canyon flameshaped vents that allow the fragrance to escape. The Scentre™ fragrance bulb features our hallmark Diamond-Light™ custom-designed glass and instantly accents your home decor. And talk about convenient! Perfectly portable, small and compact, Scentric leaves one outlet free when plugged in. So what are you waiting for? Just plug it in and go for up to 30 days of amazing scent. the HOW to: It’s EASY! Plug Scentric in by rotating the plug prongs to match the direction of your outlet, being sure that the unit is upright (flame vents on top). Remove the cap and twist the Scentre fragrance bottle up into the Scentric unit. The threaded fit ensures the unit and bottle are resistant to accidental bumps by kiddos and pets. The wick draws the fragrance up where it merges with the heating element inside. As the heat warms the fragrance, it diffuses through the vents to fill your room with delicate scent. If you look closely, you may see hints of fragrance vapor wafting from the vents just after it is plugged in! MORE Scentric electric scent is CSA® Safety Certified so you know it is safe. Fragrances and components won’t grow bacteria or release bacteria in to the air. Don’t worry if you forget to replace your Scentre fragrance bottle. It is safe to remain plugged in even after 30 days. Scentric was designed to be versatile and flexible—the neutral unit includes a metal shield that can be styled to your liking with Gold Canyon MagnaTies™. 15 Home Fragrance Oils WHY Home Fragrance Oils? Check the scent guide in your current catalog for optimal product performance. On the back of each label are convenient premeasured application guides to help easily dispense oil for your Oil Warmer Adapter or ScentMate™. Please note that not all fragrances are suitable for ScentMate. Check the chart in your catalog for fragrances tested and approved for ScentMate. Because of the natural variation of fragrance oil, the color may vary from fragrance to fragrance. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, furniture, fabrics and other finished surfaces. Peel back the label to reveal additional warnings and instructions. Clean spills or drips immediately to avoid staining. Do not allow Home Fragrance Oil to come in contact with open flames. If it becomes dirty, wipe bottle down with damp cloth or paper towel. Home Fragrance Oils will maintain a shelf life of one year when stored in a temperaturecontrolled environment (65°-80°F). If a customer uses Home Fragrance Oil in a product that does not meet our stringent guidelines, it is important that they understand that the fragrance strength, intensity and character may not perform as well as intended. Certain Home Fragrance Oils can only be shipped to the contiguous 48 states and are not eligible for expedited air shipping. These scents are, therefore, not available in Canada. Please check your catalog for the list of restricted fragrances. 16 ScentMate™ At the touch of a button, transform your space into a fragrance fantasyland by adding your favorite Home Fragrance Oil. This little guy is perfect for small spaces such as an office or bathroom, RV or classroom. Makes a great teacher appreciation gift, too. Unit includes a fan diffuser and three ScentMate Pads. Additional pads are available in a set of nine. Operates with two AA batteries or 3V adapter (not included). the HOW to: Push to open the ScentMate pad container. Gently lift the unit and remove the plastic guard. Remove the ScentMate pad from packaging and place inside container and add Home Fragrance Oil to the line indicated on bottle label (approximately 100 drops). Replace the plastic guard, close the unit, place on a flat surface and push the button. MORE Keep air vents free of lint, hair, etc. Do not block the air vents or insert fingers or any other objects into the unit. Replace batteries when light dims or if fan runs slower. Plug end of optional 3V power adapter (not included) into the jack at the back of unit. Wipe outer unit with a damp soft cloth. The ScentMate pad container and plastic guard may be removed from the unit and cleaned in mild soapy water. Dry completely. DO NOT wash in the dishwasher or immerse in water. DO NOT clean the fan blade area. Store in a temperature-controlled environment (65°-80°F). For use only with Gold Canyon® Home Fragrance Oil. Psst… If you hear a humming noise, the unit is not put together correctly. To repair this, gently tap the unit on a flat surface to get the pieces to fall together correctly. If this doesn’t work, reassemble the unit by following the included instructions. 17 Oil Warmer Adapter Convert your Scent Pod® Warmer into the ultimate scent delivery powerhouse when you add the Oil Warmer Adapter. Just place the ceramic adapter on top of your Warmer, add oil and enjoy the heavenly scent. the HOW to: Always start with a clean, dry Oil Warmer Adapter free of deposits. Place the Oil Warmer Adapter flat on the heating plate of the Pod Warmer. Using the premeasured application guides on the Gold Canyon® Home Fragrance Oil bottle, add up to 100 drops of oil to the Oil Warmer Adapter. Do not use more than directed. Turn the Pod Warmer on. You can also use the automatic timer feature and set it to four, eight or twelve hours. Periodically check the amount of Home Fragrance Oil in the Oil Warmer Adapter. Additional oil may be added as long as there is still some oil in the Oil Warmer Adapter. If no oil remains, turn off the Pod Warmer and allow unit to cool before refilling. If needed, hand wash with a mild detergent and wipe dry. MORE Your Home Fragrance Oil may or may not evaporate with the use of the adapter. Do not allow Home Fragrance Oil to come into contact with the Pod Warmer or any other finished surfaces as this may cause damage. If a spill occurs, wipe it up immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Never add water to hot Home Fragrance Oil. 18 Diffuser Fill and Vases Want fragrance greeting you as you enter the room? Diffusers are a no muss/no fuss way to have your fragrance, your way 24/7. Wickless and easy to use, pick your fragrance, pick your Vase and place your sticks. The fragrance is true to the strength and character offered in Gold Canyon® Candles and they disperse fragrance consistently for up to 5 months. Gold Canyon ceramic Diffuser Vases are the perfect quality statement for the strength and quality of Gold Canyon scents. Reasonable in price and available in neutral colors and versatile shapes, these reusable bottles will be right at home alongside your other favorite vases. Check your catalog for current Vase designs and colors. The HOW to: Remove diffuser bottle from packaging. Remove bottle cap and seal. Carefully pour the concentrated fragrance oil into the decorative glass or ceramic vase (do not use plastic). Place sticks through the open center, resting on the bottom. The sticks will absorb the oil, fully diffusing the aroma within 24-48 hours. Flipping the sticks will renew the fragrance and minimize crystals that may form on the sticks. Do not light sticks. Keep away from flames or sparks. Diffuser Fill must not be added to any type of candle, Scent Pod® or Warmer. Excessive drafts, high temperatures and very dry or humid conditions may affect the duration of your fragrance, as will the number of times the sticks are flipped. The best way to control the amount of fragrance experienced is to adjust the number of sticks being used in the decorative Vase. If the fragrance is too strong, adjust the fragrance by eliminating sticks until the ideal fragrance is experienced. 19 MORE Clean spills or drips immediately to avoid staining. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, furniture, fabrics and other finished surfaces. Yellow or amber colored spots on the sticks are normal; it’s the result of the type of concentrated fragrance oil being absorbed. If it becomes dirty, wipe down the outside of the Vase with a damp cloth or paper towel. If you choose not to let all the fragrance oil evaporate from the Vase, please discard unused oil in a trash can. A sealed bottle of concentrated Diffuser Fill will maintain a shelf life of one year when stored in a temperature-controlled environment (65°-80°F). Spritz Spritz is for the split personality (or let’s just say it—the control freak) in all of us. We want the scent whenever, wherever and however we want and we want the freedom to change it up! Sometimes strength is what is needed, other times too much is too much, and just a subtle touch will do. Spritz gives you all the freedom and control you crave. Spray as much or as little as you want, and in a few hours, you can spray again or spray something different without the worry of layering one fragrance on top of another or the clash of your morning rush and commute home temperaments. If you’re in an Amber Vanilla mood in the morning and in a Black Rain mood for your commute home, you can easily swap your scents. How strong is Spritz? It’s up you. The more you “spritz” the stronger it is and the longer the scent will last. How cool is that? The HOW to: Shake first. Then remove bottle cap and depress pump to spray. Spray as many times as you like until desired fragrance level is achieved. Replace cap after use to protect pump. Spray droplets create a fine mist. Spritz is meant for AIR—spray only in the air and not on leather, fabrics, upholstery or automobile floor mats. 20 Auto Scent Auto Scent is the low-maintenance, hang-it-and-forget-it way to add fragrance to your car, closet or laundry room. We’re talking non-stop scent for up to 4 weeks. We make it so easy to banish smelly spaces with classic fresh scents and seasonal favorites, too. The fragrance throw is strong, so be sure to check out the how-to below to make sure you are getting the best possible results. Check your catalog for fragrances currently available . the HOW to: Cut a small, u-shaped opening in the top of the bag and pull out the elasticized string. Cut bottom seam of bag off to create an opening. Turn Auto Scent to the back side. Holding the seam upward in one hand, cut three 1” slits on the seam, cutting slightly into the bag. Using both hands, gently pull the seam of a 1” section apart to create a strip. Pull the strip in an even line as it is pealed around the Auto Scent. As more fragrance is needed, repeat above step to expose more of the Auto Scent. 21 “get your style” Wrap it! Set it! Dress it! Candle Science and Testing - Report on the Ökometric Wax and Emissions Study This excerpt was jointly published by the Association of European Candle Manufactures (AECM); the Asociación Latino Americano de Fabricantes de Velas (ALAFAVE); Cartill, Incorporated; the European Wax Federation (EWF); the National Candle Association (NCA); and the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA); Sasol Wax GmbH and The International Group, Inc. © 2008 A new, internationally funded study on candle emissions has confirmed that well-made candles of all major wax types exhibit the same clean burning behavior and pose no discernible risks to human health or indoor air quality. The independent laboratory tests, conducted at the Bayreuth Institute of Environmental Research in Germany (Ökometric GmbH) and completed in late 2007, constitute the most extensive and rigorous scientific investigation of candle emissions to date. In carrying out the tests, reference candles made from paraffin, soy wax, stearin, palm wax and beeswax were burned in a specialized testing chamber. Emission gases were analyzed for more than 30 chemicals known or suspected of toxicity, health risks or respiratory irritation at elevated concentrations. Targeted chemical groups included dioxins and furans, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, short-chain aldehydes and volatile organic compounds. Recorded emission levels were then compared to any known relevant indoor-air standards. The study found all of the waxes burned cleanly and safely, with no appreciable differences in burning behavior. Their combustion byproducts were virtually identical in composition and quantity, with all emission levels registering far below the most restrictive of any applicable indoor-air standards. A similar but less extensive study of paraffin, stearin and beeswax candles was conducted by the Bayreuth Institute in 1994. By comparison, the 2007 study added soy and palm to the candle waxes tested and expanded the target analytes to include an extensive number of volatile organic compounds as well as the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxins/furans and short-chain aldehydes investigated in 1994. No significant differences in candle emission behavior could be detected between the 1994 and 2007 investigations. A global consortium of industry groups and companies sponsored the Ökometric study. Funding was provided by the Association of European Candle Manufactures (AECM); the Asociación Latino Americano de Fabricantes de Velas (ALAFAVE); Cartill, Incorporated; the European Wax Federation (EWF); the National Candle Association (NCA); and the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA). Sasol Wax GmbH and The International Group, Inc. contributed through the preparation and certification of the testing samples and provision of project management personnel. 50 Significance of Study The 2007 Ökometric study has greatly expanded the body of credible scientific data on candle emissions and burning behavior. In addition to demonstrating that the combustion byproducts of all major candle waxes are virtually identical in composition and quantity, the study reconfirms the lack of health or air-quality concerns with candles. A formal paper on the Ökometric study will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. December 13, 1999 Diana M Bonta, R.N.,Dr., P.H., Director, Department of Health Services 714 Street, Room 1253 Sacramento, CA 95814 Re: Lead Core Candle Wicks Dear Dr. Bonta, On behalf of our client, the National Candle Association (NCA), I am writing to provide you with what I hope is useful information in light of the recent University of Michigan preliminary study regarding potential health hazards associated with lead core candlewicks. The NCA led the majority of the candle industry into a voluntary commitment to discontinue the use of lead core wicks as early as 1974. Only very limited domestic production of lead core wicks continued thereafter. To our knowledge, no lead core candlewicks are currently being produced in the United States. We can specifically inform you that the largest candlewick manufacturer in the United States, Atkins & Pearce (an NCA member and also our client), does not manufacture lead core wicks. The bulk of the wicks manufactured by Atkins & Pearce (more than 80 percent) are cotton or paper core and less than 20 percent have zinc cores. For certain candle applications, a zinc core wick is necessary and appropriate. Zinc core wicks pose no known health risk when burned properly. A recent analysis of zinc core wicks that we have prepared in conjunction with an environmental toxicologist demonstrated that a pure lead core wick contains 50,000 times more lead than a zinc core wick, which contains merely trace amounts of lead as a naturally occurring contaminant. Stated another way, a consumer would have to burn 50,000 candles with zinc core wicks in order to match the lead content of a single candle with a lead core wick. (See Risk Assessment: Candles With Zinc Core Wicks Are Not A Health Hazard, a copy of which is attached). As indicated by the University of Michigan preliminary study, certain candles manufactured abroad, particularly from Asia, still include lead core wicks. Because of the potential health hazards associated with lead core wicks, the NCA would support a statutory ban on the sale of lead core wicked candles, similar to that which was in place in California from 1974 to 1985. Of course, we would not want such a ban to include zinc core wicks. I hope this background information is helpful to you. If you have any questions or want to discuss this issue further, please don’t hesitate to call. Sincerely, JAMES M. MATTESICH RISK ASSESSMENT 51 CANDLES WITH ZINC CORE WICKS ARE NOT A HEALTH HAZARD By F. Jay Murray, Ph.D. (December 1999) Summary The purpose of this risk assessment is to estimate the number of candles with zinc core wicks that a person would have to burn daily in order to exceed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Ambient Air Quality Standard (the EPA air quality standard) for lead. Even using a sense of extremely conservative assumptions, a person would have to burn for four hours daily over 3,000 candles with zinc core wicks to exceed the EPA air quality standard for lead. Using data from the preliminary study recently conducted by Dr. Jerome Nriagu at the University of Michigan and adjusting for the lead concentration of the wick, it is estimated that a person would have to burn over 7,500 candles with zinc core wicks to exceed the EPA air quality standard for lead. Introduction The most recent data from the largest U.S. candlewick manufacturer indicates that zinc core wicks contain merely trace amounts of lead as a naturally occurring contaminant. The purpose of this risk assessment is to estimate the average daily exposure to lead from burning candles with zinc core wicks. The EPA recommends an ambient air standard of 1.5 micrograms (mcg) per cubic meter (m3) of air for a 24-hour day. Since a person typically breathes 20 m3 of air per day, the EPA standard is equivalent to a daily exposure of 30mcg (1.5mcg/m3x20 m3). Accordingly, if the average daily exposure to lead from burning candles with zinc core wicks does not exceed 30mcg of lead, then the exposure would be below the EPA air quality standard for lead. Amount of lead released from burning candles with a zinc core wick No actual measurements exist for the amount of lead released from burning a candle with a zinc core wick. However, worst-case estimates may be made by using the existing data and by making several conservative assumptions. The largest U.S. candlewick manufacturer tested zinc core wicks for lead content and they contain 22 parts per million (ppm) of lead. A four-inch piece of zinc core wick weighs 0.0762 grams (g), or 76.2 milligrams (mg). It is unlikely that the average consumer burns four inches of wick during a typical candle-burning event. A candle-burning event is defined as the average length of time a candle is burned per day by an average consumer of candles. Using the conservative assumption that one inch of wick is burned during the candle-burning event, the maximum amount of lead that could be released into the air may be calculated as follows: If a four-inch piece of wick weighs 76.2 mg, then a one-inch piece of wick weighs 18.2 mg. If the concentration of lead in the wick is 23 ppm, then a one-inch piece of wick would contain 0.38 mcg of lead (18,200 mcg x 0.000022 ppm). Thus, the total amount of lead contained in a one-inch piece of wick is below the EPA air quality standard for lead of 30mcg/day. Indeed, even if a person ingested daily a one-inch piece of zinc core wick, the exposure to lead would be about 80 times less than the EPA air quality standard. Obviously, consumers of candles do not ingest wicks; they burn them. Therefore, the more relevant question is how much lead would a person be exposed to burning a candle with a zinc core wick. 52 Estimated exposure to lead from burning a candle with a zinc core wick To estimate the amount of exposure to lead from burning a zinc core candle, it is assumed that all the lead in a one-inch piece of wick (0.38 mcg of lead) is released into the air over a period of 4 hours of candle burning. This is an overly conservative assumption since some percentage of the lead in the wick would undoubtedly drop into the wax. However, for purposes of this risk assessment, it is assumed that all of the lead is released into the air and none of the lead drops into the wax. It is also assumed that all of the lead is suspended in the air for a 4-hour period. This is another overly conservative assumption since a significant portion of the lead would settle out of the air over a 4-hour period. It is assumed that the lead is distributed throughout the volume of air in a small room. If all of the lead in a one-inch piece of wick were released into the air in the first minute of burning (a physical impossibility), the room air concentration could be calculated by dividing the volume of air in the room by the amount of lead released from the wick. If the room is assumed to have a volume of approximately 60 cubic meters (m3), that’s about the volume of a room 16 feet by 16 feet by 8 feet. Thus, if a total of 0.38mcg of lead were released instantly into a volume of 60 m3 of air, the room air concentration would be 0.006 mcg/m3. If a person inhales 0.83 m3 of air per hour, then the amount of lead inhaled in one hour would be 0.005 mcg (0.006mcg/m3 x 0.83 m3). In 4 hours, a person could inhale 0.02 mcg of lead (0.005mcg/hour x 4 hours). This conservative estimate is 1,500 times below the EPA air quality standard for lead. Even using this overly conservative estimate, a person would have to burn daily over 1,500 candles with zinc core wicks to exceed the EPA ambient air quality standard. This estimate is extremely conservative since it is assumed that all of the lead in a one-inch piece of wick is instantly released into the air during candle burning and that none of the lead settles out of air. And it also assumes that the room air exchange rate is 0.5 air changes per hour. This means that half the air in a room is replaced by outside air in an hour. It would mean that the concentration of lead in the air in the room would drop by about 50% every hour. Therefore, a more realistic estimate is that a person would have to burn daily over 3,000 candles with zinc core wicks to exceed the EPA air quality standard for lead. This conservative estimate still assumes that all of the lead in a one-inch piece of wick is released instantaneously. Comparison to University of Michigan estimates It is possible to compare the results of the present risk assessment with the preliminary results of Dr. Jerome Nriagu of the University of Michigan. Dr. Nriagu studied a variety of lead-containing wicks, including wicks presumed to be lead core wicks. A wick containing 100% lead would contain 50,000 times more lead than a zinc core wick containing 22 ppm of lead. Dr. Nriagu’s exposure estimate may be adjusted by dividing his results by a factor of 50,000—the difference in the lead concentration between lead and zinc core wicks. Using Dr. Nriagu’s highest estimated air concentration of 65.3 mcg/ m3 of lead and dividing by 50,000 yields an estimated air concentration of 0.0013 mcg/m3 of lead. This figure is about four times lower than the conservative estimate in the risk assessment described above. Using Dr. Nriagu’s methodology to estimate the room air concentration of lead and assuming a person breathes this 0.83 m3 of air containing 0.0013 mcg/m3 of lead for four hours daily, the daily exposure from a single candle with a zinc core wick would be 0.004 mcg/day of lead. Using this estimate, a person would have to burn daily over 7,500 candles with zinc core wicks to exceed the EPA air quality standard for lead. - Submitted to Gold Canyon December 1999, by our Wick Manufacturer 53 October 21, 2008 To Our Valued Customer: As you may know, Congress approved the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA), and the President signed it into law this past August. CPSIA is the most far-reaching consumer protection law enacted in decades. By expanding both federal and state government enforcement power and imposing new restrictions on manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers, CPSIA has created a long list of new obligations and risks for any business involved in the sale of consumer products. The most pressing of the new requirements for the candle industry is with regard to the lead-cored wick ban. The 2008 Act expands the general certification requirements to all products subject to CPSA bans as well as standards, or to any “similar rule, ban, standard, or regulation under any other Act enforced by the Commission”. There is currently a ban on lead-cored wicks, requiring the candle industry to certify that all candles are in compliance with this ban. This letter serves as certification that all wicks sold by us, your wick supplier, far exceed the standards for lead content as set forth by the CPSA in guideline “16 CFR 1500.17 (a)(13) which sets the lead content limit for zinc core wicks to 0.06% lead by weight. The lead by weight percentage in the wicks used by Gold Canyon® is significantly lower than the CPSC Standard, ranging from 0.0016% to 0.004% lead by weight. 54
