six icy adventures

Here in Alberta, we know how to have fun in
the winter – even if we need to bundle up to
do it. In fact, we celebrate it with ice festivals
and activities all over the province. Here are six
icy adventures to check off your list this winter.

Ski by Night
Inhaling the crisp night air as I carve, or more
precisely, snowplow my way down the slopes
is something I really enjoy. One of the biggest
perks of rural ski hills is night skiing, which
adds a whole new dimension of excitement,
not to mention convenience – there’s nothing
better than getting in a few runs after a long
day parked in front of a computer.

Winter Magic on Alberta's
Snowmobile Trails
By Mike Fisher
It’s a bluebird day, last night’s fresh snow
sparkling on the tree boughs, perfect for
sledding. I plug my helmet into a port on my

in the staging area just 10 minutes north
of Whitecourt on Hwy 32, and zip it into
my pocket.
Then I hit the electric start and turn on
the handlebar warmers before easing the
164-horsepower machine out of staging,
leading a group of five sledders who’ve also
come to mark this trail off their bucket list of
must-do rides in Alberta.
As soon as we’re out of the staging area,
we’re into the spruce and pine trees. We
wind through them, heading for fresh
powder. After 20 minutes, we stop at the
Athabasca Lookout rest area with its
picnic table and fire pit overlooking the
Athabasca River and the town of
Whitecourt to take in the stunning view.
Just off the trail, we see a mother moose

Trails and Terrains
With 34 volunteer-led sledding clubs and 5,000 KM of mapped and
marked snowmobile trails, Alberta offers breathtaking scenic terrain
– mountains, prairies, forests, lakes and rivers – that you’d have
to travel across Canada to find otherwise. So says Chris Brookes,
Executive Director of the Alberta Snowmobile Association.
“The best thing you can do is join a club and meet like-minded
people in this very social and inclusive winter recreational activity,”
he says. “It’s a great way to find the best trails, too, and the ones
that aren’t as well known. And we have top-notch accommodation
perched at the edge of wilderness.”
West Central Alberta
The Golden Triangle is a 354 KM riding area that has some of the
deepest and thickest powder outside of the mountains. It includes
both central and northern Alberta.
Eagle Trail (about an hour and a half, with stops) intersects with the
Golden Triangle Trail (a 10 hour ride), which connects Fox Creek,
Swan Hills and Whitecourt.

Lost Creek Trail is a six hour return ride to the Lost Creek

south side of the town of Coleman. You will experience rolling hills
with some twists and turns. Along the way there’s some dead

Northern Alberta
Alberta’s north country features boreal forests, lakes and huge

Big Mountain Snowmobile Area, C Loop has a staging area off
Hwy 666, about 20 minutes south of Grande Prairie, where you
start this three hour ride. The first few kilometres are straight up,
and then you get some ups and downs when traversing across
the creek bank of Big Mountain Creek.
At the top of the loop there is a straightaway that leads to the banks of
the Smoky River, showing a deep, carved valley with beautiful vistas.
Wherever you go, snowmobiling in Alberta is a wild and wonderful ride.

Why Spa Rhymes
with ahhh
Don’t
hibernate!
Rejuvenate!
By Joanne Elves
Don’t you think you deserve just a little TLC?
You’ve been on your feet all day, sightseeing
or shopping, or hiking frosty trails to frozen
waterfalls, or maybe it’s been a perfect
powder day on the slopes. Your body is
crying out for some ahhh time. Or, maybe it’s
time to pamper that special someone with
some ahhh time of their own. Either way,
there are plenty of spas and hot springs in
Alberta to revive that spring in your step.
Mountain Magic
Feel your body melt with every step into the
soothing naturally hot water of the historic
Banff Upper Hot Springs – where ahhh in
Alberta all began. Tip your head back as you
soak and let the snowflakes melt on your
tongue. Plan tomorrow’s adventures as the
minerals of the springs relax your aching
muscles. Then step into a massage at the
adjacent Pleiades Massage in the original
bathhouse next door.
Urban Escapes
Regional Spas are Oh-la-la
While the family makes a splash at the World
Waterpark at West Edmonton Mall, drop
your shopping bags and slip quietly into one
of the mall’s spas to find some inner peace.
Full body treatments await but a manicure
and pedicure will do nicely today.

In Calgary, spend a tropical morning in
the rejuvenated indoor Devonian Gardens
and take that feeling into the afternoon,
unwinding in a eucalyptus scented steam
room. Within walking distance of the Calgary
Tower are Calgary’s finest spas offering
everything you need for that ahhh feeling.
Treat yourself or treat a friend, but
don’t forget there is always the gift of
togetherness. A couples’ massage is a
great way to rejuvenate, on so many levels.

Get Out and Do
it This Winter
By Heather Egger
It’s winter! Time to get active! Sitting around
a cozy log fire is for afterward. Whether
you’re an avid powder hound or a die-hard
STAR WARS fan; ready for about the best
festive lights display in the known universe,
or crazy about folks in silly costumes on
cross country skis, we’ve got something
going on in Alberta this winter that fireside
tales are made of.
In Between Home Games
You settle in your seat with a drink and
a dog, all ready for an evening of loud
cheering, hard hits and incredible speed.
The puck drops and the arena fills with
thunderous cheers, the slice of sticks on ice
and the scrape of sprinting skates. A home
game in Alberta – how did you get so lucky?
We live for hockey here. But as much as we
wish it weren’t so, sometimes there is just
no hockey on. So in between games, we’ll
keep the party going at one of these cool
winter happenings. Feel free to wear your
jersey – you won’t be alone.

Romance in the
Rockies
By Caitlin Crawshaw
With each step, your skis carve v-shaped
marks into fresh snow as you haul yourself
and your gear up the final stretch of
mountain. You lean hard on your poles,
hoping to ease your burning quads and
aching calves. Turns out the rumours are
true about Deception Pass: it is indeed a
worthy adversary.
A few paces ahead of you, your sweetie
gasps. Stopping in your tracks, you share
the same thought: finally! Squinting into
the afternoon sunlight, you see a rustic log
cabin nestled in the valley below, complete
with a plume of smoke curling up from the
chimney. This might possibly be love at
first sight. You catch your breath and
with a quick grin, find that last spurt of
energy to glide into Skoki Lodge,
exhausted but exhilarated.
A Perfect Backcountry Gift
About 14 KM from Lake Louise, and at an
elevation of 2,164 m, the journey to this
backcountry getaway is all about the tough

love. But the destination – a rustic log cabin
surrounded by pristine wilderness – couldn’t
be more romantic. With your ski boots kicked
off, and your gear stowed in your room, you
curl up together in front of a crackling fire,
with a vintage beverage close at hand.
You know now that this was the perfect gift.
Most of your friends went the stoneware or
fondue set route. A getaway to a remote
mountain cabin? Perfect for adventurers like
the two of you! Happily, you booked your
trip, without thinking twice about the five
hour ski-in trek to the lodge.
After the best sleep you can remember, you
devour a delicious breakfast, then strap on
your skis to explore the area’s picturesque
views and wildlife (like bighorn sheep and
marmots). Skoki staff helped you plan your
route for the day and have packed you the
perfect picnic lunch.
Skoki Lodge is one of many romantic
getaways to be had at Alberta’s authentic

and his beautiful Duchess, Catherine, who
stole a visit on their tour of Canada in 2011.

Ice Road to
the North
Photo: H. Katz/Parks Canada
By Jane Usher
It seems like every time you turn around
there’s another roadway calling your name.
But there’s one in particular that hollers out
loud in the winter – and only in winter, as
it doesn’t exist in the summer. Ice road to
the north. Those few simple words could
conjure up a screenplay.
So here’s the scene: in the summer, the
northern reaches of Alberta are accessible
only by plane. The ground is goopy muskeg
and anything heavier than a wolf is going
to sink up to its knees, wheels, you get the
picture. In the winter, ice roads are built
across the frozen tundra, becoming the
only land routes that connect our remote
northern communities for a few months of
the year. Then supply trucks – and crazy
explorers like yours truly – will traverse
these roads until the spring thaw.
Ice Roads 101
As soon as it’s cold enough, trucks apply
water over the muskeg until the surface ice is
about six inches thick. The road is then staked
to guide drivers on their way north. Otherwise,
you wouldn’t know the difference between the
road and the rest of winter out there.
From mid-December to mid-March, the ice
roads wind through stately boreal forest, over

Ice fishing
in Style
By Travis Grant
The shimmering northern lights wave like a
banner over a silhouette of forest. It’s a cold,
clear winter night outside the window of my
guide’s cabin – a modern bed and breakfast
with rustic personality. A few logs gathered
from the woodpile hiss in the belly of the
stove as I listen to tales of fishing in northern
Alberta. The narrative breathes life into his
credentials as a wilderness expert.
He talks about ice fishing in the old days when
holes were drilled by hand and enthusiasts
fished for hours without heat or shelter.
Clusters of ice formed on fishing lines as they
moved in and out of the water with the jig of
the bait. A lot has changed since then.
Modern Creature Comforts
We pull up to the lake at 7 a.m. the following
morning. Only the brightest stars are visible
now as lighter shades of blue bleed from the
horizon into the dark sky. My guide expertly
unloads a snowmobile from the trailer.
I help him hitch it to a metal toboggan,
and he begins loading our gear. There’s
a gas-powered ice auger, tackle boxes,
a collapsible ice hut with room for four, a
propane heater and stove, rods and reels
designed for ice fishing, and food and drink.
We sled two-thirds of the way across the lake,
stopping at an unassuming spot 180 metres
from the nearest shoreline. He checks his
GPS to make sure it’s the right place. Below
us there’s an underwater structure where large

schools of walleye come to feed on bait fish.
Now it’s time to drill a number of holes with
the gas-powered ice auger. Then we clear
away the snow and raise the ice hut.
Winter Wonderment
The heated hut is warm enough for me to
shed my toque, gloves, and coat. The ice
is translucent, but through the holes we
can see all the way to the rocky bottom. I
watch a small monitor as the guide lowers a
camera down a hole. We now have a blackand-white peripheral view of the structure,
with a school of walleye hovering at its edge.
By noon we’ve caught enough walleye for
lunch. The guide prepares the thick white
fillets by rolling them in flour, breadcrumbs,
and salt and pepper before frying them in oil
over the propane stove. The finishing touch
is a twist of lime and gourmet side-dishes,
an exquisite meal that marks the end to a
superb day, and the beginning of a new
habit – comfort ice fishing.

Things to consider…
• Before heading out to fish, you’ll
need a fishing licence, which can be

• Dress in layers – then you’re prepared
for the cold but can lose the outer
layers once you’re inside a heated hut.

No Cost Family
Fun This Winter
By Debbie Olsen
The forest surrounding Lake Louise is
wrapped in a cold winter silence. I can
hear the sound of snow crunching beneath
my snowshoes as I make my way along a
well-travelled trail with my husband and two
teenage children. On winter nights when
the moon is full, you can snowshoe through
the woods without the aid of artificial
illumination. This is such a night – our
headlamps are turned off and we are guided
solely by the moonlight reflecting off the
iridescent surface of the snow.
It is unusual to be alone in these woods.
Lake Louise is one of the most popular
winter travel destinations in the province,
but tonight the mercury is sitting somewhere
around -25°C and most explorers are
staying indoors. The hand warmers in
our mitts and boots combined with the
brisk pace of our hike are keeping us
comfortable and the kids haven’t
grumbled about the cold – yet.
Starshine
As the trail winds its way deeper into the
forest, we finally succumb to the need to
better see the path ahead and turn on our
32
travelalberta.com
headlamps. When we reach a clearing, we
turn them off again and lay on our backs
to get a better view of the night sky. Even
the most jaded teenager can’t help but be
amazed by a truly dark night sky. “I’ve never
seen stars this bright before,” exclaims my
sixteen-year-old. “This is really cool.”
It is cool in more ways than one. Before
long, we are back on our feet and hiking
through the woods. As we walk the final
half kilometre back to where we started,
we begin to feel the full impact of night’s
chill. Surprisingly, neither child complains.
Perhaps it’s because they realize our family
snowshoeing adventure has given us a
chance to reconnect with nature, and with
each other. Or maybe it’s the knowledge
there is hot chocolate and a cheery log fire
waiting at the lodge to warm them up.
Where Else to Snowshoe
Kananaskis Country, Banff and Jasper
all offer groomed trails with spectacular
scenery, but you don’t have to travel to
the mountains to enjoy snowshoeing.
