Was Daniel Spangler and Michael Spengler brothers?
1. Daniel Spangler born 1716 ca, died Nov. 3, 1787. Legend says Daniel was in failing health and died
suddenly while serving on jury duty in Franklin County, Va. It is said that he was buried in Pigg River
Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery1 located five miles south of Calloway, Va. on State Route 750
between State Routes 751 and 640. No marker is known to exist.
RootsWeb Ancestry.com World Connect project genealogies that show Daniel was a son of Jacob and
Elizabeth Stophell is mythology based on Jacob's will which reads:
February the 5th Anno Domini 1756 Jacob Spengler of Allsace Township and County of Berks hath made his last
Will and faith in the Presence of the subscribing Wittness, as followeth--That his only son George Christopher
Spengler who helped ........ (a word or two missing)..... be it what Denomination it will ..(a word missing).... and
Personal. Except only that the Heir shall give unto his Mother Elisabeth Spengler for her suport during her Life
Yearly (in case she does not dwell with him) 14 Bushels of Wheat, 50 Pounds of Pork, 20 of Beef, 40 shillings in
currancy and the .... of cows but he shall keep said cows at his own charge. The Things above said George Christian
Spengler shall give unto his Mother Elisabeth Spengler for her maintenance and further that my son shall give one
cow and calf unto my Deceased Daughter’s Child Elizabeth Wise (?) by name and that when she is married. which I
myself signed by my own hand before Witness.

CEMETERY is located approximately 1 1/2 miles west of US Route 221 on Spangler’s Mill road (State
Route 682) in Floyd, County, Va. Mary was one of the first Spanglers in Floyd County, Va. Her maiden
name of Nofsinger is mythology and not documented as far as I know.

I have been searching for almost a half century to backtrack Daniel and Mary but to no avail. I
have looked at court records, land deeds, church records and many other sources including most
of the genealogies for Daniel and Mary as a couple and individually on the RootsWeb World
Connect website as well as in the LDS submitter data base. I have found serious descrepancies
and numerous factual errors in these sources. My recommendation is that one should uses data
from these sources as clues as to where to look and not accept it as factual until proven..
Family folklore (mythology) says Daniel came to America from Germany and spent seven
years as an indentured servant to pay for his passage. Using the birth date for Daniel, Jr., (bible

record) as 1747 places Daniel and Mary’s marriage at 1745/46. Assuming marriage at the
completion of his seven years as an indentured servant puts his arrival in America at about
1737/38. Rupp’s 30,000 Immigrants book shows a Hans Michael Spengler on a list of 105 of
318 passengers on the ship Samuel arriving at Philadelphia Aug 30, 1737. The World Connect
genealogy referenced says Hans Michael arrived in Philadelphia on August 21, 1737. Rupp
shows only one ship arriving at Philadelphia on Aug. 21, 1750 – only a minor difference in dates.
Also interesting is that Michael Spengler is the last name on Rupp’s abbreviated list of
passengers on the ship Samuel. Is it possible that Daniel Spangler and Michael Spengler were
brothers?
Transcript of the Last Will and Testament of Daniel Spangler
IN the name God Amen, I Daniel Spangler of Franklin County and the State of Va., being, thru the abundant mercy
and goodness of God, tho weak in body yet sound and perfect understanding and memory, do make this my last will
and desire it to be received by all as such. As to my worldly estate I will and positively order that all my debts be
paid: IMPRIMIS, I give and Demise and bequest unto my son Daniel his heirs and assigns the plantation he now
lives on he giving his Mother ten bushels of wheat yearly and every year during her life. Item, I give Demise and
bequeath unto my Son George his heirs and assigns the plantation he now lives on he giving his Mother ten bushels
of wheat every year and sow her one quarter of an acre of flax and give fifty pounds of pork to her every year
likewise to keep her two cows and one horse and John Nofsinger is to make her a deed for his land. Item, I give
demise and bequeath unto my son John his heirs an assigns my plantation in Botetourt County on the waters of Little
river. Likewise I will that when the plantations I now live on is sold if there is anything to be paid on it, it is then to
be cleared for him.. Item, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Hannah one black mare and colt. Item, I give and
bequeath unto my Daughter Elizabeth one young horse. Item, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary one
young black mare. Item I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Mary the plantation I now live on with all the
goods and chattels and movables and bonds and notes all debts, and do constitute her Executive of this, my last will

married Samuel Spangler, Margaret who married Henry Hylton, Sally, Annie Mary, Elizabeth, Henry who
married Sally Starr, and Agnes who married John Pratt. Sally died at the age of 63 on Jan. 9, 1866.

Death of Mrs. Spangler
Mrs. Hannah Spangler died Wednesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dillard W. Sowers, near Camp
Creek. She was about 89 years old and had been an invalid for several years. She was helpless, blind and could not
talk as her tongue was paralyzed, and had been for sometime.
Her funeral was preached at Pine Creek church on Friday by Elds. Asa Bowman and W.H. Naff, after which she
was laid to rest by the side of her husband, who had preceded her some fifty years ago.
She leaves two living sons, Eld. S.G. Spangler, and Abraham Spangler, and two daughters, Mrs. Dillard Sowers
and Mrs. Wm. Proffit, all of this county. She also leaves a number of grand children and great grand children as well
as a host of other relatives to mourn her death.
We extend sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

Dier father moth brothers and sisters. this evening with plesure I do embrace the opertunity of
wrighting to you that I am in goode helth hoping that thes pfu lins shold reach your hand it may find you all
enjoying the saim stat of helth also. We had a very plesant jurney and arived here on fridey the 29th of Sept I hav
set in with Mr Samyel Altic the secent day of this month to work a year at the blacksmith traide and gets one
hundred dollars for the yeair and my washing in and my court shoes also my fir is good and I am very well satesfide
with my hom so fere. Creed Sowers is working with William Mores Scaf for well boering he gets twelv Dollars pur
month he lives four miles below me he is very well last WednesDay and well satisfide and I think he has groed sins
he has bin heare right much he sends his comply ments to you all and he ses he laments the los of his old fiend

My ggg grandfather was Benton Goodson, s/o Samuel & Sarah. I found them living in Raleigh Co.,in the 1860
census. But something happened to them before 1870. The family was split up, I found Floyd Goodson, brother of
Benton on a Graham farm, working as a laborer. And I cant find a trace of the rest of the family, until 1880. On the
1880 census, for kanawha Co.,WV.,Benton is living with his mothers sister. Jacob Spangler and Ruth (Graham)
Spangler, from Floyd Co. Benton is 21, and listed as their nephew. Are their any Goodsons, related to this family

Mrs. Whitlock Dead
Mrs. Sarah Whitlock, an aged lady, who made her home with her son, W. L. Whitlock, near Spangler's Mill, was
found dead in her bed Friday morning. She had been in declining health for several years. The family was up with

her until midnight, and, they retired and when they awoke found that she had died sometime after midnight. She was
about 78 years of age and was well known.
Her funeral was preached by Elders Spangler and Bowman, after which she was laid to rest in the Spangler
burying ground in the presence of a large crowd of relatives and friends, which attested to the high esteem in which
she was held.
She leaves several children, grandchildren, and a host of relatives to mourn her death. Peace to her ashes.

Married Lydia Layman (Lemmons) on 11 February 1830 born 19 September 1811 in
Montgomery County, Virginia; died August 1844. (From the April 2003 issue of Tennessee Ancestors,
published by the East Tennessee Historical Society.)
A letter written August 14, 1842 by Jacob's brother Daniel in Coffee County, Tennesse states that "Brother Jacob
moved off". From other records we know that Jacob settled in Missouri. We also find him in the 1840 census of
Missouri.

It is believed tha Anna Mary Spangler was not a daughter of Samuel but a daughter of William H Spangler and
happened to be there the day the census was taken.

It also appears that Lydia married J. R. Vernor and had two more children born between 1840 and 1844 when she
died in Tennessee. Did Jacob die in Missouri after the 1840 Census and Lydia return with the children to Tennessee
where her mother, a brother and 4 sisters still lived?
Is the 120 acres in Barry County, Missouri mention in J.R Vernor's will the land once owned by Jacob Spangler?
This proceeds from the sale of this land was to be divided equally among Lydia's four children and J. R. Vernor's
children (probably by a previous marriage) were not included in the proceeds from the sale of this land. From these
facts I suspect Jacob had died in Missouri after the 1840 census was taken and before 1843.

made by the said Jacob Spangler according to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April, 1820,
entitled "An act of making further provision for the sale of Public Lands," for The North half of the Soutwest
Quarter of Section Twenty Eight, in Township twenty eight, of Range twenty six West, in the district of Lands
subject to sale at Springfield, Missouri, containing eighty acres According the official plat of the survey of the said
lands, returned to the General Land Office by the Surveyor General, which said tract has been purchased by the
said Jacob Spangler.

Lidy Varner 6 appears in Warren County, TN in 1850. She was with James Whitlock 60 and Mary 58. In 1860 Lydia
Varner is with Jo Hall 55 and Elizabeth 35 in Coffee County. Her mother must have died about the time she was born.
The part of the census she was in 1850 was taken on November 19.
Another part of the puzzle. In his will J. R. Vernor mentions "120 acres of land in Barry County, Mo. on Spring
River. This is the same area where Jacob Spangler shows up in the 1840 Census of Missouri! It appears from his
will that J. R. Vernor died in 1849 or early in 1850.
Jacob's Land Patent for 80 acres in Barry County, Missouri is shown below. It was issued September 10, 1844 and
recorded March 21, 1845. I don't know how the llegal system would have worked then but I am assuming that Jacob
had made application and purchased the land sometime prior to 1844 and probably died before the paperwork was
issued and the land went to his heirs which were his minor children and his wife.

pg 20-21. 16 Mar 1845. Will of J.R. Vernor (Verner, Varner]. I, John R. Vernor, do make and publish this as my
last will and testament. First, I direct that my funeral expenses and debts be paid. Secondly, I desire that all my
stock and household furniture be sold at public sale. Thirdly, if the above is not sufficient to pay my debts I desire
that my two tracts of land on Hickory Creek be sold privately, if possibly. Fourthly, I desire that "the proceeds of
two beds and furniture go to my two children by Lydda Spangloc [to wit], Elizabeth Melonly and Liddia Sarah
Malvina Vernor" the money to be put at compound interest until they become or age or marry. Fifthly, I desire that
the rent on the land on Barren Fork (Tennessee) where Lydia Verner died (died August 1844) be appropriated to
raise and educate her children "Isaac Henderson, Jacob Westly Spanglor (sic) and Elizabeth A. Melante and Lydia
Sarah Malvina Vernor" (sic), sixthly, the 166 acres on Barren Fork where Lyddia Verner died and also 120 acres of
land in Barry County, Mo. on Spring River be divided between "Eliz. A. Melante Lyddia Sarah Malvina Verner and
Isaac Henderson and Jacob Westly Spangler" when they become of age. 7thly, two fifths of my Hickory Creek lands
to go to my two sons Bloomfield Henry and James Perry Verner to be put on compound interest, and if Bloomfield
never returns, the two-fifths to go to James when he comes of age. " Isaiah Low took Mary Angeline to raise and
promised to make her equal to the rest of his children, but should the said Low turn Mary Angline off without doing
for her the child's part/ then she shall come in with my other daughters Matilda Adeline and Lucinda Martha Vernor
of the balance of the proceeds of my Hickory Creek lands". Lucinda Martha is to have $21.00 in sundry tools sold to
her husband Kincheon Hawking, Matilda Adeline and Mary Angeline are to be made equal to Drucilla Martha. I
appoint John Lemmons and Isaiah Starkey my executors. Witnessed B.K. Snips and Hardy Riggs. Proved 7 Jan

1.1.7.1 Jacob Westley Spangler
1850 Tennessee Census - Wisley or more than likely Wesley was living in Cannon County in houwehold # 38 with
Sanders Brown 25, and his wife Mary 24. They had two children. Wesley was 10 and born in Tennessee. Daniel
Spangler is in household 62. He and Elizabeth are in their 60's and had Milly and Disa and her husband and child
living with them. Samuel Spangler is in household 59 and he has his wife four daughters and a brother-in-law

living with him. David Spangler is 24 married with a one year old son in household 95. George Spangler is over in
Warren County and he and his wife are in their 60's with three daughters and three Bolin Children living with him.
So this possibly could be Jacob's son but there is no Isaac listed in the 1850 census in Tennessee. Possibly he was
farmed out to another family.
1.1.7.2 Isaac Henderson (Henry) Spangler was born 12 SEP 1837 in Morrison , Warren County,
Tennessee, and died 12 JAN 1912 in Siloam Springs, Benton County Arkansas.
Isaac Spangler 21 appears in Coffee County, TN in the 1860 census. He was with the family of Red Brown and listed
as a farm hand. In 1870 he is in Warren County, TN and listed as Isaac H. Spangler 30. He is with Jacob Allison and is
a merchant. This is the only Isaac Henderson that shows up in the 1880 Census that meets all the information on
Jacob Spangler's son. Only four with this name showed up in the total U.S. Census. I can find no Jacob that meets the
information.
Married Martha Susan Stubblefield 14 AUG 1871 in Bedford County, Tennessee, daughter of
Commodore Perry Stubblefield and Nancy Davis. She was born 12 JUN 1846 in Pickens County. South
Carolina, and died 27 SEP 1928 in Ponoma , California. She was buried in Panoma , Califormia.

to establish a community near Lyle and Appleton, Wash. In this group
were John and Ella Simmons, Benjamin and Amanda Spangler and
Christian Spangler. Christian's wife is not mentioned. Possibly she had
died by this time. He later moved to Portland, Oregon and re-married.

Daniel Spangler Dead
Daniel Spangler, one of our most prominent citizens of Topeco, died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday after a short illness
with pneumonia following flue, and severe heart trouble. He was 79 years, one month, and three days of age, having
been born on Dec. 25th, 1843. He was married to Miss Weddle, about 60 years ago and to this union one daughter
survives, Mrs. C. H. Mitchell. His widow and two grandchildren survive, Cline Wade of
, N.C. and Price
Wade of Floyd. Also two great grandchildren were born but one preceded him. He leaves a large host of other
relatives and friends, who will be pained to hear of his death.
Mr. Spangler was an influential member of the Brethern church and the best known man in the county. He was
faithful to his church and did much for his church at Topeco.
He was charitable, having raised a number of ophrans and all raised to be members of the church and all have
good homes of their own.
His funeral was preached Monday at Topeco church by the minister.

On the 13th day of June, 1928, the death angel came and claimed for it's victim my dear husband, Henderson Armstead Spangler.
He was born in Floyd county Va., on the 10th day of Aug., 1849, making his stay 78 years, ten months, and 3 days. His father
was David Spangler, his mother was Amelia Boothe, and he was married to Lydia M. Conner, in 1870. He was the father of 10
children. Those surviving are; Mrs. Amos Martin, Mrs. Archie Sowers, Mrs. Andy Martin, Mrs. Roscoe Lampey, Mrs. Noah
Moore, and one son Jacob Spangler, all of Floyd county, Va. Those preceeding him to the grave are Mary Ellen Martin, Nancy
Maude Blackwell, Noah C. Spangler, and Matthew Spangler.
He was an excellent provider for his family, a loving husband, kind and tender father, loyal citizen and always
met you with a smile until he lost his mind which was about 21 years ago. He joined the Primitive Baptist church in
1903. We may feel that he is in the paradise of God and and out of his miserable affliction as he seemed to weary
very much about his condition, but he will be missed by all.
On the evening of the 13th, ther was an electric storm. He was standing in the door just after the storm. I passed
him and he asked me where I had been. I told him I had been lying on the bed. I then went out in the yard, had been
there but a short time until I heard him groaning. I went as quick as I could to him, found him lying on the floor. I
had no one to aid me, so I rang the dinner bell for our son, Jacob who called on the telephone for help. Then I put a
pillow under his head and gave him a dose of painking. Just then Jacob came in and we lay him on the bed. He was
wet from perspiration with hand and feet cold. We tryed to warm them but could not get them warm. He called for
water and something to eat. He drank some water and coffee but would not eat anything else. We thought he was
better and so we went to bed. Then about two o'clock, he made several groans and was gone. On the next day the
funeral was preached and he was layed to rest in the family burial grounds on the place amidst a host of relatives and

Spangler, James, informant (Friend).
When James Spangler was about eight years old he was visiting his sister's house. She had children about his
age. They were playing in the front of the house when a group of Union Cavalry came up, possibly to water their
horses, rest, etc. As they left the Captain reached down and grabbed James by the scuff of his neck and road off
with him. He was returned to the same spot as the unit was going home after the war was over in 1865. Research as
I might, I cannot find any record of this but it was well remembered by several people my great-aunt knew when she
was little who were there. His account was that they were in Tennessee and Georgia (and possibly Kentucky)
during the time when they road into battle the Captain would put James on his horse in front of him so that he
wouldn't be shot. Many times they were in engagements and he heard the Confederates yell, "Don't shoot the
Captain, he has a boy with him!"
What I have recounted here is virtually 100% of his Civil War experiences that anyone I knew who knew him
ever heard him say.
Once James' children were grown and his wife died, he would put everything he wanted to travel with in a
knapsack and walk from the house of one of his children to the other, staying a few months at a time then moving
on. They said it was all very low key; you knew he was leaving whenhe came down to breakfast with his knapsack
and off he'd go. He'd show up at the next place 100 miles distant, perhaps a couple of years from when he'd last
been there, just like he'd been outside on the porch for less than 10 minutes. His thing was firewood and until the
day he died he kept them in logs wherever he stayed. In fact, he was at the farm where my father was when he died;
had the axe over his head to chop, presumeably had a heart attack in mid stroke and fell straight back. He is buried

Married Christina Meyers on February 5, 1787 at Franklin County, Virginia by Randolph Hall, Minister
and Floyd Nichols and John Fuson, Surety. John was mentioned in Daniel’s will of 1787. also
mentioned in Mary’s will of 1812. Records indicate that John and Christina were in Kanawha County,
West Virginia in 1794. Apparantly they moved from Virginia between 1814 and 1819 to Franklin,
Indiana. They were in Franklin County, Indiana in 1820 and 1830, but in 1833 they moved a little further
south to Ripley County where they platted a town called Spanglerville. They were there when they died.

Transcript of John Spangler’s Will
I John Spangler of the Township of Laughery in the County of Ripley and State of Indiana do make publick and
declare this my last will and testament revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofore made
and being of sound mind and memory:
First-I direct that my funeral be conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and situation in life and that
any expenses incurring from same be paid out of my personal state as also all other just debts and expenses together
with certain legacy hereafter named. Secondly, I leave and bequeatah unto my wife, Christina Spangler all my stock
consisting of horses, cows, young cattle, sheep, hogs and also all farming utensils and all tools of whatever
description also all the household and kitchen furniture with all cooking utensils together with all other personal
property which in right may belong to me at my decease. Thirdly, it is my wish and desire that my wife, Christina
Spangler may occupy and enjoy all my real estate during her natural life. Fourthly, I give and bequeath unto
Benjamin Zedrick Martin and Christina Hudleston all my real estate situated in Laughery Township in the County of
Ripley, Indiana to be divided share and share alike between the said Benjamin Zedrick Martin and Christina
Hudleston. Fifthly, I leave and bequeath unto Elizabeth Hudleston, Mary Hudleston, Nancy Johnson, Sarah
Childers, Rebecca Proctor,Cyntha Martin, Lidia Cooksey each one dollar, the said sum to be paid out of my personal
estate and; Sixthly, I appoint my friend Thomas W. Sunman my Executorof this my last will and testament in
testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of March, One Thousand, Eight

Bremen, Kentucky, Muhlenburg County. On Oct. 9, 1788 Mary Spangler (Hannah’s mother) signed a
document stating “Know all men by these Present that I Mary Spangler of the county of Franklin for and
in consideration of the love good will and affection, which I have and do have towards my loving Friend
John Nofsinger of the County Former have given granted and by these Present so freely give grant unto
the said John Nofsinger his Heirs and assigns forever all and singular all my goods Chattels now in my
possession in the County of Franklin or else where namely all my stock of Cattle, Hogs, sheep and horses
all Bonds, Bills accounts and Debts Dew to me all moveables and other household furnitureTo have and
to hold ...” Mary Spangler’s will of Nov. 27, 1812 states in part “..I give to my son in law John
Noufsinger five shillings and no more then I give to my son John Spangler five shillings and no more,
then I give to my son in law Thomas Foulor and his wife Mary five shillings and no more, ... .” It appears
that Hannah married John Nofsinger sometime after 1788 and before 1812. My guess is about 1804.
