SDSMF’s signature fundraiser is one of
La Jolla’s most highly-anticipated events
of the year. The five-star event features
more than 30 of La Jolla’s and San
Diego’s top-rated restaurants, delivering
scrumptious cuisine and exquisite drinks.
In addition to the fine fare, guests can
also enjoy a New York-style fashion show
and take part in live and silent auctions,
and opportunity drawings giving away
prized, one-of-a-kind items like tickets,
trips and catered dinners.
“Guests can look forward to a great
time at a premiere event showcasing the
best of La Jolla and San Diego,” said Dr.
Dave Chao, founder and president of
SDSMF. “Taste of the Cove is a first-class,
oceanfront and sunset event with highend food, fashion, celebrities and priceless auction experiences.”
A-list sports guests like this year’s
“Community Legend” honoree Trevor

San Diego lifeguards made a splash on Aug. 19 during San Diego Lifeguard Service’s 57th annual Ron Trenton Memorial Lifeguard Relay in
Mission Beach.
The relay consisted of four teams competing in 12 legs to demonstrate
a variety of rescue techniques including running, swimming, paddle
boarding and landline rescue.
The Central Area team, consisting of lifeguards from Mission and Pacific beaches, took the gold, followed closely by La Jolla lifeguards on the
Northern Area team. The Boating Safety Unit took third and the Southern Area team, consisting of lifeguards from Ocean Beach and Mission Bay,
brought up the rear.
According to Lifeguard Services Lt. Nick Lerma, each team exchanged
the lead throughout the race culminating in a close race at the finish line.
The purpose of the relays is to motivate lifeguards to fine-tune their rescue skills and athleticism while also showcasing various rescue techniques to the public. Additionally, the lifeguards are able to blow off some
steam after a hectic summer, Lerma said.
The lifeguard relay competition was named after veteran lifeguard and
longtime Northern Area team captain Ron Trenton, who was lost at sea
while piloting his private plane from Catalina Island to San Diego in 1997.

La Jolla waters have been particularly dicey of late. To ensure summer
fun stays safe, read tips from San Diego Lifeguard Services, Page 3.
Imagine using your smart phone to report local environmental problems to community volunteers the way a
Neighborhood Watch program reports crime. This is one
vision Gale Filter, the new executive director of San Diego
Coastkeeper, would like to implement as he settles into the
top spot of one of San Diego’s foremost environmental
watchdog groups.
“We’re in tough economic times where we see government resources contracting,” he said. “People are going to
be getting more involved and that’s what I want to do,
help get [volunteers] involved.”
A retired environmental prosecutor and alum of the
University of San Diego, Filter served as the deputy director of enforcement and emergency response for the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Department of
Toxic Substances Control.
He also served as the deputy executive director for consumer, environmental and legal services for the California
District Attorneys’ Association.
While Filter said he plans to use law enforcement strategies to continue San Diego Coastkeeper’s mission, he added
that he also wants to find new ways for volunteers to help.
While working in Imperial County, Filter said he helped
develop a website called Ivanonline.org to bring people,
organizations and government officials together to help
report and remedy pollution-related problems.
“I don’t think we use enough of [technology],” Filter
said.
It would be interesting, he added, to see how someone
can snap a picture or send a message to a website. From
there, volunteers and government officials monitoring the
website would meet periodically to discuss and solve the
reported problems.
City officials already meet with local planning boards to
update residents on city projects. And though residents
can already report nuisance pollution and other environmental code violations by calling the city, this proposed
new group could request similar city attention, said Jose
Ysea, San Diego Environmental Services public information officer.
But even with cooperation from residents, the city has
strict labor laws that may limit the amount of work volunteers may do. Environmental group volunteers already
help with some water-monitoring activities, with the bulk
of the work done by local government.
“Because of liability issues and labor relations [the city]
has to make sure we’re not filling paid city positions with
volunteers,” Ysea said.
Even paid and unpaid intern positions must go through
a strict hiring process, he added.
As Filter and the rest of the San Diego Coastkeeper team
continue to keep citizen involvement up, other issues on
the horizon also highlight the group’s agenda.
Enforcement in protected marine sanctuaries off the
coast of La Jolla Cove, Encinitas and neighboring shorelines will be something to keep an eye on, Filter said.
Marine sanctuaries that protect certain pockets of shoreline would limit certain kinds of fishing, according to published reports.

La Jollan highlights the jewel’s

Inspired by the beauty of her community, La Jollan Sharon Hinckley — whose photos are often featured in the La Jolla Village
News — finally decided it was time to share
her inspiration with the world.
Hinckley created a 2012 calendar of
the images she has taken in and around La
Jolla, and the final product went into stores
on Aug. 24.
“I love to travel and I love calendars,”
Hinckley said. “Whenever I go on a trip I
often will buy two or three calendars from
my favorite sites often keeping them to
enjoy long after the calendar year is over.”
Hinckley said she was unable to find a
La Jolla calendar last spring, and wondered
how such a beautiful tourist destination
could not have a calendar — so she decided to make one. She said she spent hours
with Nancy Warwick and Joe Porteous of
Warwick’s poring over calendar prototypes
and images. She
also worked with
Karen Fast from St.
James by the Sea
Gift Shop, John
Bolthouse of the
La Jolla Historical
Society and Adrian
Fortmann from
Wall Street Art In
Framing to make
the final selections.
The finished calendar contains 27
images of La Jolla.
“I hope that the La Jolla 2012 calendar will provide our many travelers a
reminder of their visit to ‘The Jewell’ and
be a daily inspiration for our local residents,” Hinckley said.

Lifeguard sheds light on beachgoer summer safety
Typically, La Jolla Shores is home to
some of the gentlest waves in all of San
Diego. This summer, however, powerful rip
currents have become a common occurrence at the Shores — the beach with the
densest swimming crowd in all of San
Diego.
On July 28, about a dozen lifeguards rescued 26 people when several small rip currents converged together to create a flash
rip current that swept a group of about 50
swimmers into deeper water offshore.
Although lifeguards made 55 rescues
that day, no serious injuries were reported.
Lt. John Everhart, who heads up marine
safety for the San Diego Lifeguard Services, advises beachgoers to remain wary of
the powerful currents that can arise suddenly, varying in intensity and location.
“We still have rip currents at La Jolla
Shores as well as other city beaches,” Everhart said. “Our rescue numbers are down in
August from our busy July, but we are still
having busy days, especially when the sun
comes out.”
Everhart provided safety tips to ensure
that beachgoers continue to have a great
time at the beach through the end of summer:
• Swim near a lifeguard and ask the lifeguards where the best place to swim is.
• If caught in a rip current, raise your hand
for assistance and swim parallel to the
beach until you are out of the current.
• Always supervise young children.
• Don’t mix alcohol and aquatic activities.
• Be respectful of others and have a
great time.

How to short sale your home without an agent
LA JOLLA, When you decide to
sell your home, setting your asking
price is one of the most important
decisions you will ever make.
Depending on how a buyer is made
aware of your home, price is often
the first thing he or she sees, and
many homes are discarded by
prospective buyers as not being in
the appropriate price range.
Your asking price is often your
home’s “first impression,” and if
you want to realize the most money
you can for your home, it’s imperative that you make a good first
impression.
This is not as easy as it sounds,
and pricing strategy should not be
taken lightly. Pricing too high can
be as costly to a homeseller as pric-
ing too low. A recent study, which
compiles 10 years of industry
research, has resulted in a new special report entitled “Homesellers:
How to Get the Price You Want (and

understand pricing strategy from
three different angles. When taken
together, this information will help
you price your home to not only sell,

Rockola to inject family entertainment
vibe into La Jolla’s Concerts by the Sea
BY BART MENDOZA | VILLAGE NEWS
There is no shortage of cover bands
in San Diego, but few have had the
popularity and staying power of classic rock quartet Rockola, which performs at La Jolla’s Concerts by the Sea
on Sunday, Aug. 28. Fronted by guitarist Bob Tedde for more than two
decades, the band includes bassist
Doug Booth, drummer Bobby Sale
and guitarist Mark DeCerbo.
Masters at re-creating the sound
and vibe of hits of the sixties and early
seventies, the band’s sound is incredibly accurate, earning it a following
large enough to sell out venues as
large as the Spreckels Theatre on the
occasion of one of their Beatlesthemed shows.
Rockola has traveled the world playing their favorite songs. It’s tight musicianship has seen the band back a
long line of stars, including actor Don
Johnson, Jack Bruce of Cream, Alan
Parsons and Beatles compatriot Tony
Sheridan. But the band members’
favorite events are the hometown
summer concerts like Concerts by the
Sea. “We’ve played this summer concert series every year for over a
decade,” Tedde said. “We love it, from
the great crowds to the view.”
The concert’s 2 p.m. start time
means many visitors might need to
bring umbrellas to shield themselves
from the sun.
“One of the unique things about the
La Jolla concert is what we call ‘the
turning of the umbrellas,’” Tedde said.
“We prime for this the whole show. So
for the last song, I give a countdown
and everyone starts spinning their
umbrellas and it looks really cool with
hundreds of people doing that.”
He also observes that the concert
series is a family-friendly event.
“It’s a daytime thing, so the kid factor is a big deal,” Tedde said.
While it might seem that music that
is 30 to 50 years old would not be of
interest to today’s youngsters, Tedde
finds just the opposite to be true. He
points to the continued popularity of
the Beatles and the soundtrack use of
songs like The Monkees’ 1966 hit “I’m
A Believer” in the megahit “Shrek”
cartoon movie series as among the
reasons for the younger set’s interest.
“It kicked us in the butt a little bit,”
Tedde said.” We’ll do an obscure Beatles song like ‘Hey Bulldog,’ and little
kids will come and stand up front and
they’ll know the off-handed talking
that John Lennon and Paul McCartney do at the end of the track. They’ll
say, ‘You know you got that part
wrong.’ They know it better than us.”
Tedde has a way of gauging the
success of shows held during un-rock
’n’ roll hours, too.
“I really take it as a big victory if I
can get a lot of people dancing in the
daytime and get them to come all the

The La Jolla Symphony Chorus will

Aug. 27 and Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to

The audition process will include a

“(The audition) is structured this way
not only to be thorough but, more importantly, to be fair,” said choral director
David Chase. “We pride ourselves on
having a smart chorus and want to make
it even smarter.”
Chase has led the 130-member chorus since 1973, conducting performances like the world premiere of Henry

Kernohan’s “Now a Wanderer,” the U.S.
premiere of Australian composer Martin
Wesley-Smith’s “Boojum!” and the West
Coast premiere of Cary Ratcliff’s “Ode to

This season, the La Jolla Symphony
Chorus is readying itself for featured performances that will include Benjamin Britten’s “Spring Symphony” at New York

UCSD festival gives
paper a new dimension
The UCSD Arts Library will hold its 10th
annual Paper Theatre Festival on Aug. 25
during the smallest full-production show that
the school has to offer.
At the festival, audience members will have
the opportunity to watch and engage in a paper
theater production.
“People learn everything about how to put on
a full-scale production, but they learn it on a
small scale in the course of doing paper theater,”
said Scott Paulson, outreach coordinator for
the UCSD Arts Library and founder-director of
the Paper Theatre Festival. “We make the audience part of the show and ask for volunteers to
help with reading, lighting and production.”
Because of the stage’s miniature size, Paulson assures that everyone will have a front-row
seat.
“There is only a front row,” he said.
Paper theater was a popular Victorian educational toy where paper is transformed into replicas of actual theaters and paper doll characters
modeled in the likeness of popular actors of
the time period. The production was often conducted in a drawing room for a small audience
of family and friends and used to encourage literacy, teach people about all facets of production and celebrate actual theaters and playhouse productions from around the world.
“People will be delightfully surprised how
charming all of these two-dimensional layers
can add up to a lot of depth,” Paulson said.
“And it’s just paper.”
The Paper Theatre Festival will take place
on the lower level west wing of UCSD’s Geisel
Library at noon, with an encore performance at
12:30 p.m. For more information about the festival, call Paulson at (858) 822-5758 or email
[email protected].

FRILLY ANEMONE:
BY JUDITH LEA GARFIELD | VILLAGE NEWS
Though the tentacles of this anemone lack frills,
it is still a M. senile. They can reproduce sexually but the flurry of fuzzy white specks near the
adult imply one of the asexual methods was at
work splitting off young from the adult’s body.

If you’ve seen the movie “Raiders
of the Lost Ark”(1981), you likely
agree that one scene in particular
stands out. It’s when our two protagonists, archaeologists Indiana Jones
and Marion Ravenhood, find themselves at the bottom of a dark, dank
well and share this exchange:
Jones: “Here, take this [torch]. Wave
it at anything that slithers.”
Marion: “The whole place is slitherin’!”
Jones: “Snakes … I hate snakes.”
It won’t be immediately apparent
why I bring up snakes when this article is really about a beautiful flower
animal called a frilly anemone
(Metridium senile subsp. fimbriatum),
but predators of this anemone could
explain why, had they the words.
First, some background. Members
of the genus Metridium are most prolific in the frigid waters of the northwest but they are found off the coast
of Southern California as well. Personally, I have been seeing more of
the petite species of this clan (no taller
than about 4 inches) sporadically in
the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater
Park. Adults are characterized by a
long, smooth column to which a powder-puff-like head bearing up to 100
slim tentacles is situated. The frilliness
of the tentacle tips is special to this
group of anemones, whereas most
other anemone species sport thicker,
lobed tentacles. Yet the identity of
young M. senile specimens may befuddle divers who at first confidently recognize the white anemone with a
long, glossy column but then doubt
themselves when noting slender but
not frilly tentacles. It turns out that
as these anemones age, the more
densely curved and frilly the poof
becomes.
The deeper I dive, but within sportdiving limits, the more likely I’ll see a
frilly anemone, which may be
anchored to an overhang, rock face,
or one of the terraced walls of La
Jolla’s submarine canyon. While
snow-white is what most divers think
when the word Metridum is bandied
about, animals of pale yellow, pastel
peach and tan are also part of the
scene. I don’t consider it a negative
that frilly anemones are limited to delicate coloration because they more
easily stand out in the otherwise lowlight conditions of their environment.
When I’m finning through the water,
and a frilly anemone is nearby, it
immediately catches my eye.
M. senile has limited mobility but
prefers to stay put. The situation
demands that food must somehow be
delivered. Nature capitalizes on the
surrounding water movement to
bring this about. A frilly anemone is
endowed with a sweet spot, the narrowest part, on its column just
beneath the crown of tentacles where
the animal bends. This narrowness
presents a case of function following
form because a cantilevered posture
maximizes the feeding position. An

La Jolla doctor to help
patients help themselves
Dr. Hillel Mazansky held a lecture
Aug. 17 on the
power of “guided
imagery” — a technique used to help
treat a number of illnesses like cancer,
depression, obesity,
insomnia, diabetes
and chronic pain.
Mazansky, formerly a family pracDR. HILLEL
titioner, said he
MAZANSKY
switched gears to
focus solely on the power of guided imagery in conjunction with healthy nutrition and exercise for a
longer and healthier life.
Interactive guided imagery is a psycho-neuroimmunology practice where the patient visualizes a
type of healing substance emanating from the brain to
attacking the source of pain or illness. Mazansky’s
patients have visualized everything from a CO2 agent
freezing lung cancer to a blue light traveling through
the body to attack chronic pain.
“Guided imagery is the power that the brain has to
help treat itself. The brain causes a lot of our physical
and psychological problems,” Mazansky said. “When
the psyche is intact and there’s no problems there, the
immune system is up. When the psyche has contention, stress or anxiety, the immune system decreases and the disease gets to rise.”
Based on studies that Mazansky has examined,
immune cells increase for about eight hours before
they begin to falter again. For that reason, he suggests
that patients visualize the healing power at least two
times per day – morning and night – to keep the
immune system elevated.
Mazansky works in conjunction with the patient’s
doctor or psychiatrist to augment and speed up a
patient’s recovery. In addition to guided imagery,
Mazansky gives patients an antioxidant-rich nutritional program and exercises which cater specifically to
the patient’s age and physical limitations.
“It’s non-toxic, it’s easy and the patients feel empowered by doing that,” he said. “Exercise, eat right and try
to lead as stress-free of a live as you can, and that’s
about as healthy as you can get. Just be a happy individual and smile, and you will live longer.”
For more information about guided imagery or to
make an appointment with Mazansky, visit
www.gianinc.com or call (858) 320-0021. Guided
Imagery and Nutrition, Inc. is located at 8910 University Center Lane, Suite 485.

‘Let medicine be thy food,
let food be thy medicine’
Mazansky offers these tips to living a longer and leading a healthier life:
• Fruits and vegetables with deeper, more intense colors are higher in antioxidants. Blackberries contain the
most antioxidants by volume, followed by blueberries.
• Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, which boost serotonin levels. Fish oil pills are a healthy alternative.
• Vegetarians should get a sufficient amount of protein
through beans, tofu or protein powder.
• Those little food vices really aren’t all that bad. A glass
of red wine helps to reduce high cholesterol, dark chocolate relaxes the body and boosts energy levels and coffee
contains antioxidants.
• “An apple a day keeps Dr. Mazansky away.” Apples are
high in fiber, especially organic red apples.
• Less is more. It is better to eat less of something with
more variety.
• Thirty minutes of exercise – even just a walk — five to
six days per week is all that is required for health.

I’m not an economist, but it feels
like credit default swaps should be illegal. Shouldn’t they? Buying insurance
against failure gave the perpetrators
of the original mortgage backed security failures a way to make money
from their own follies rather than taking a more responsible exit from the
practice of increasing returns by
stacking risk upon risk. Our financial
and political guru’s have instead cured
that problem by regulating the mortgage industry to the point that in spite
of record low rates, few people feel
they can or want to try to get loans to
refinance or purchase real estate. Formerly one of the largest industries in
the nation has come to an engineered
standstill because confidence in the
real estate market has been crushed
by Fed action where. Could we be literally working our way out of the quagmire? Take heart. There are excellent
buys in La Jolla and San Diego County.
You actually can get a loan if you go to
a lending professional who knows how
to package your loan file to successfully navigate the crocodile infested
regulations.
Buy your dream home, now, while
you can enjoy it. The rates are so low,
your buying power is most likely onethird again higher. Buy now before
new, even more onerous regulations
take effect, and you again find yourself
saying, “What now?”!!
It didn’t need
to tread so heavily and inaction
where it did.

We’ve been pulled through a knot hole

take an act of Congress, an actual

We just need to make stuff, like China
does, or produce oil. That’s how a
country can increase its gross domestic product, thus increasing the country’s income without the government

Alzheimer’s Early Detection Technology
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and as-yet incurable
condition; yet doctors and scientists are recommending new
PET brain scans effective for early detection of the disease as
an aid in determining appropriate medical treatment and
helping patients plan for the future.
An Alzheimer’s diagnosis is a life-altering, stressful and
upsetting circumstance for anyone. Yet, the possibility of optimal symptom and time management gives both patients and
caregivers the chance to seize a better future. As PET scans
reach the marketplace and patients begin to utilize medical
technology to help them cope with the possible onset of
Alzheimer’s disease, treatment and lifestyle adjustments may
help improve overall quality of life for those suffering from
memory decline. And until PET scans are fully integrated
into healthcare facilities, the experienced professionals at
Innovative Healthcare Consultants are here to help.
Innovative Healthcare Consultants offers clients a dedicated, empathetic and personal outlet with the details involved in
caring for an elderly parent or relative. As local leaders in geriatric healthcare management, we provide elder care planning
in order to lift the burden of making difficult and critical care
decisions off our clients’ shoulders – not just at the specific time
of need or crisis, but throughout the elder’s lifetime.
When individuals suspect severe memory decline and possible Alzheimer’s symptoms in their parents or loved ones,
they can easily grow overwhelmed trying to determine the
next step. Someday, a PET scan may make this process easier for all but in the meantime, Innovative Healthcare can
provide the compassionate expertise and support necessary
to secure the future for an aging loved one – and guarantee
peace of mind in the process.

LA JOLLA LIVING
vent or not to vent,
that is the question
By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D.
I used to read that not expressing
your anger, holding on to it, would lead
to physical symptoms of illness, so the
advice was to vent your anger. Then I
read that to express your anger will
only make you angrier, raise your
blood pressure and not help to resolve
the situation. So the advice was to
swallow your anger.
Now I read the latest research,
which suggests that the above advice
can be harmful. So what’s the real
story?
Most studies have always involved
men and the relationship between
anger and heart attacks. Men who are
easily angered, easily irritated over
small things and who are generally
anxious, are more likely to suffer heart
attacks than their calmer counterparts.
We used to think of Type A personalities as those who are always in a
rush, who do three things at the same
time, who push their way to the front of
the line, who interrupt others, finishing
their sentences for them.
What has been found is that the only
Type A behavior that is harmful is hostility. In other words, it is not that you
are in a rush, it is that you’re angry at
the slowpokes around you, honking
your horn and cursing.
Little research had been done on
women when the first large-scale study
at the University of Tennessee looked at
anger in the lives of average, middleclass, American women. Women
between the ages of 25 and 66 — 535
of them — working fulltime outside
the home, were given questionnaires.
The researchers found that what
typically triggered an angry response
was feeling that one had been treated
unfairly or disrespectfully, not being
able to meet one’s own expectations,
others failing to live up to expectations
and frustrating situations at work that
could not be changed.
Generally, issues concerning power,
responsibility and justice were all the
triggering mechanisms for angry reactions.
Older women seemed to get less
angry, perhaps because they learned
to suppress anger as young women or
because they just mellowed with age.
The researchers also found strong
evidence that venting anger by yelling,
screaming or lashing out was more
harmful than keeping it in. Venting
anger was more likely to disrupt relationships, creating further problems for
both the giver and the receiver of the
wrath.
Women with low self-esteem were
more easily provoked and saw innocent acts and words as personal
affronts. The women who expressed
their anger in an attacking and blaming fashion were also more likely to be
depressed. Ruminating about the provoking event worsened the angry feelings and was associated with an
increase in blood pressure.
On the other hand, women with
high self-esteem neither suppressed nor
expressed their anger, but discussed
that anger in a problem-solving way
either with the person who provoked it
or with a friend, reducing the feelings of
anger and sparing the potential recipient from an outburst.
Living in a retirement community
as I do, I find that when residents are
angry about a seemingly unimportant
thing, it may be healthy. Being upset
may be a way to have a voice; it is a
sign of caring about the way things are
done or not done. In this case, the
opposite of anger is apathy — giving
up on one’s wishes, expectations or
needs.
One cannot write about anger today
without discussing rage: the out-ofcontrol feeling that overwhelms us and
dictates our behaviors — usually to the
detriment of us and others. Rage
unleashes cortisol, the stress hormone,
which clogs our arteries. Spousal and
child abuse are due to rage — often
unleashed by an insignificant event.
We have all read about road rage —
common to people with a low tolerance for frustration. Then there is the
rage fuelled by political agendas that
propel people to suicide bombings —
anger large enough to overcome our
innate urge to survive. Anger threatens; rage kills.
So to vent anger is bad for your relationships. “Ruminating” about it raises your blood pressure. So suppress it
until you can talk to the offending person and explain the impact of their
behavior. If that is not possible, talking
about the angry feelings with a friend
helps.
But most importantly, don’t allow
yourself to be easily provoked. In other
words, mellow out, try not to take it
too personally. It is the other person’s
problem for having upset you, not
yours. Remember that when Peter
gives feedback to Paul he says more
about Peter than he says about Paul. If
it’s an event out of your control and
not anyone’s fault, blame is not an
option. The strategy is the same: talk
about it with a friend.

Salk Institute presents its 16th annual “Symphony at Salk” fundraiser Aug.
27. The really big news is that the
evening features Tony Award-winning
Broadway sensation Idina Menzel, who
most recently captivated the Great White
Way and the Tony Awards committee
with her creation of Elphaba, the green
witch in Stephen Schwartz’s “Wicked.”
Menzel is also familiar in a recurring role
in the television series “Glee,” playing
the vocal coach who is Rachel’s mother.
Menzel’s previous Broadway roles were
Maureen in “Rent” and Amneris in
“Aida.”
Menzel will sing songs from Broadway shows, likely to include Elphaba’s
big number, “Defying Gravity,” which
she sang in the Tony Awards show in
2004.
Returning for his seventh consecutive
year on the podium is Omaha Symphony artistic director Thomas Wilkins, who
said he feels like an adopted member of
the Salk family. He leads 60 San Diego
Symphony musicians in a Broadway
musical medley and said he is looking
forward to his first collaboration with
Menzel, whose work he has long
admired.
“The setting is quite frankly spectacular,” Wilkins said of Salk Institute’s
Gildred Court. “The
marriage of nature
and creative architecture is a visual delight.
When you add the
sound of one of
America’s finest orchestras, it’s an
evening not to be missed.”
Wilkins was born in Norfolk, Va. and
began studying the violin in fourth
grade. He switched to cello the following
year, and two years later added the tuba
to his repertoire. Educated at Shenandoah Conservatory and recipient of a
master’s in orchestral conducting, he
said he has wanted to be a conductor
since the age of 8. He and his wife, ShariLee (who plays piano and violin), reside
in Omaha with their twin daughters
Erica (who plays flute) and Nicole (who
plays harp). Also principal guest conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Wilkins holds the Gersmeshausen
Family and Youth Concerts Chair with
the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO).
He is only the third person to hold this
title in the BSO’s 57-year history.
“Symphony at Salk” is held in the
Theodore Gildred Court at the Salk Institute. Tickets are $250 and include a
5:30 p.m. pre-concert champagne reception, concert seating, a gourmet dinner
with wine and refreshments, and
reserved parking. Proceeds benefit Salk’s
groundbreaking scientific research and
its community education programs. The
Salk Institute is located at 10010 North
Torrey Pines Rd. For more information

SOCIETY
Starry, starry nights
with Vincent Andrunas
About 25 years ago, comedian (and
avid horse racing fan) Tim Conway
was doing a show at Canterbury
Downs racetrack near Minneapolis.
Aware of the injuries jockeys frequently suffer in races, he wanted to donate
his performance fee to a fund for hurt
riders — but no such fund existed.
He conferred with Judy McCarron,
wife of Hall of Fame jockey Chris
McCarron. She’d seen firsthand how
injuries can threaten riders’ careers
when Chris’ leg was broken — in four
places — in an on-track accident. With
Tim’s $5,000 donation, they started
the Don MacBeth Memorial Jockey
Fund, named for an exceptional jockey
who had succumbed to cancer at age
37.
With Judy as president, Chris and
Tim as vice presidents and Tony
DeFranco as executive director, the
fund raised millions of dollars over the
years and aided thousands of injured
riders. The money helped with medical
expenses and equipment and helped
pay living costs while jockeys were
unable to work.
Over the last 14 years, Jeffrey and
Bill Strauss have helped the fund with
an annual fundraiser, hosted at their
famed Pamplemousse Grille restaurant
just across the street from the Del Mar
Thoroughbred Club. They devote the
entire 130-seat restaurant to the event,
selling out every year. The jockeys trot
across the street after the last race (and
a shower, of course).
Jeff feeds them and puts them to
work as waiters, serving food and
drinks throughout the evening (and
clearly having fun doing it). Tim brings
down a Hollywood buddy or two (Harvey Korman, Dick Martin, Mike Connors, Tom Poston and other notables
have all helped in the past; Bob
Newhart made a repeat appearance
this year), and they mingle with the
guests, tell jokes and sometimes tend
bar. After a good, long social hour outside with drinks and Jeff ’s signature
appetizers, guests head into the restaurant to put on the feed bag for real.
The last jockey dinner was held on
Aug. 11. Popular a capella group
Augie’s Side Effect returned to sing,
sounding better than ever with its new
female vocalist. The food and drinks
were as good as ever, and the Kobe
burgers have grown to slider size, solving a distribution bottleneck.
Mike Smith was among the jockey
contingent, as was Chantal Suther-

An heirloom tomato salad with burrata cheese and crispy pork belly preceded an entrée of slow-roasted, boneless veal rib eye with mushrooms.
Dessert was a brown sugar cheesecake.

K9 PHYSICAL THERAPY/REHAB CUTTING
EDGE K9 REHAB www.cuttingedgek9.com We
have Been Featured On Local And National
News, Radio And A Number Of Local Papers
And Magazine Articles. Swimming is one of our
strongest recommendations for most K9’s. It
is an ideal form of exercise for a number of
reasons. We offer assisted swimming in a
warm water environment. The benefits are: •
Non-weight-bearing (reducing stress on joints)
• Facilitates full use of the front and hind legs
vs. partial use as seen with underwater treadmills • Dogs are often able to actively swim
although unable to move their legs on land
(due to stroke/ spinal injury) • Allows manual
techniques by therapist/ manual resistance to
an affected limb • Swimming in a controlled
environment is the safest way for clients to exercise. • Speeds recovery following injury/
surgery • Improves function and quality of life
• Works reciprocal muscle groups throughout
the session (helps correct muscle imbalances)
• Reduces pain and inflammation • Reduces
canine obesity thus decreasing the risk of
other health-related problems • Increases
strength, range of motion and cardiovascular
conditioning • Prevents overheating through
proper water temp • Increases tolerance for
extended cardiovascular training • Decreases
recovery time • Reduces post-exercise soreness • Provides good cross training for the
competitive, athletic dog (619) 227-7802
