And Individual EMD E5 un-skirted Locomotives

The next big thing is here! Wrapped in a specially decorated and printed bookcase style package, the
“Silver Streak Zephyr” will be a complete classic named train in a single box, containing both the E5A
locomotive “Silver Bullet” (complete with prototypical skirted trucks) and the five-car consist that made
up this CB&Q streamlined and corrugated train.
Also releasing this October, for modelers looking to supplement their fleet of locomotives for pulling the
“California Zephyr”, Kato USA will be releasing additional individual E5 locomotives, without the
distinctive skirting that would have been present when they were first built, making them appropriate for
pulling later era CB&Q trains!

EMD E5A #9909 “Silver Bullet” was built specially for service with the Silver Streak Zephyr and was fitted with
Skirts on the trucks and a covered cowl to emphasize the sleek, streamlined look of the locomotive and train.
The individual EMD E5A locomotive releases will have different printing patterns on the nose to reflect the
“general use” versions of the CB&Q E5A locomotive, as well as have un-skirted trucks that reflect the locomotive’s
later appearance when they would have been used to pull trains such as the California Zephyr.
The EMD E5 has a distinctive raised angular radiator grill arrangement on the roof that was specific for that
locomotive.
A special feature of the new Kato EMD E5A is that the front coupler cowling can be removed on both the skirted
and un-skirted units in order to mount a Kato magnetic knuckle coupler – this allows modelers to double head these
locomotives when pulling longer trains such as the California Zephyr!
A point of interest is that all E5’s were custom built with stainless steel corrugated sides so as to match the CB&Q’s
stainless cars; a feature that gives these locomotives a noticeable shine and makes the matching Silver Streak
Zephyr so elegant.
Today, #9911A still exists in operational condition at the Illinois Railway Museum, and is used on excursion trains
in addition to being on public display.
The Silver Streak Zephyr bookcase train set and individual E5A locomotive releases are
scheduled to ship at the end of October 2012, and Kato USA is now accepting orders for the
first delivery!

set or individual car releases, modelers can expand their base set to create any number of
prototypical single-level Amtrak trains.
