ArcticLink 3 S2 Solution Platform Brief
QuickLogic ArcticLink 3 S2 Solution Platform Brief ® 3 S2 As sensor-based applications and use cases become more prevalent in smartphones and wearable devices, the need for sensor hubs is increasing. However, as battery life increasingly becomes the largest complaint of device users, OEMs are forced to evaluate their power budgets and seek alternative methods of implementing functions at lower power. The ArcticLink 3 S2 and S2 LP ultra-low power sensor hubs provide OEMs a platform to implement always-on, always-aware sensing into their devices at a fraction of the power consumption of traditional methods with MCUs or Application Processors (APs). The ArcticLink 3 S2 and S2 LP, the second generation sensor hub platforms from QuickLogic, feature a processing platform ideal for the needs of power-conscious OEMs. The processing core of the devices is the Flexible Fusion Engine (FFE), a Finite State Machine plus CISC Arithmetic Logic Unit. The FFE is designed to run sensor algorithms and process sensor data in an extremely power-efficient way, providing for a great user experience while keeping the power consumption of the sensor hub as low as 75µW (implementation- and device-dependent). SENSOR HUB HIGHLIGHTS: Android Lollipop, KitKat, and RTOS Support Power and Size Efficient Architecture • Active power consumption as low as 75μW (68μA @ 1.1V) • 2.19 mm x 2.47 mm WLCSP package Multiple Variants • Standard ArcticLink 3 S2 provides the lowest cost with low power consumption (93μA @ 1.2V) • ArcticLink 3 S2 LP offers the lowest power consumption (68μA @ 1.1V) • Devices are pin- and software-compatible, allowing one PCB design to serve multiple product purposes Sensor Manager • Autonomous initialization, sampling, and calibration of sensors through hard-wire I2C Master eliminates AP/MCU load, lessens overhead, and provides accurate timestamps • 8 KB of sensor data memory – support for up to 2000 timestamped events (implementation-dependent) • Supports up to 12 physical sensors concurrently, including out-of-the-box support for accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, pressure, ambient light, proximity, gesture, temperature, UV, humidity, gas, and heart rate monitor sensors Application Processor or Microcontroller Communication Manager ArcticLink 3 S2 Sensor Hub Flexible Fusion Engine Sensor Manager Programmable Fabric • Sensor manufacturer-agnostic; support for all commonly-used sensor manufacturers through Qualified Vendor List 2nd Generation Flexible Fusion Engine Processing Core • CISC-based ALU core for optimal combination of processing performance and power consumption; 30 MIPS equivalent performance (compared to ARM M4) and 100 MIPS equivalent performance (compared to ARM M0/M0+/M3) • In-system reconfigurable for use in different contexts and applications • 4x the computational capability of previous generation • 4x the on-board algorithm capacity of previous generation Inertial, Photonic, Environmental and/or Wellness Sensors ArcticLink 3 S2/S2 LP Sensor Hub Architecture Communication Manager • Communicates with host applications processor/MCU through hard-wired SPI interface Programmable Fabric • Allows implementation of additional technologies on the sensor hub to eliminate discrete components, lessen PCB space requirements, and lower BOM cost For more information about QuickLogic’s ArcticLink 3 S2/S2 LP Solution Platforms, scan the QR code or visit us at www.quicklogic.com/sensorhub MIX-AND-MATCH ALGORITHM APPROACH The ArcticLink 3 S2 sensor hub supports sensor algorithms from QuickLogic’s SenseMe™ Algorithm Library, 3rd-parties, and/or OEMs. Walking Running Cycling Elevation Change G Us es er tu re Tap to Wake Raise Hand Twist Hand Double Tap Front Double Tap Back Device in Pocket Device not on Person Accidental Drop Horizontal Angle Detection In Elevator In Car On Bicycle Ac Us tiv er ity Stationary D Lo ev ca ic tio e n QuickLogic SenseMe Algorithm Library Heart Rate Monitor S enseM e TM S2 OEM Alg or ith ms Tr U an se sp r or t 3 rd- p ar t y Al g o r i t hm s This library is current as of March 2015.
