Qantas and Emirates partnership
The Qantas and Emirates partnership was confirmed by the ACCC
on 31 March 2013 in Australia. This is currently under review in New
Zealand. The baggage allowances and policies have changed slightly.
Passengers connecting from an International flight onto a domestic
flight (within 24 hours) will be eligible for the international baggage
allowance. Travellers will however need to show both tickets when
checking in baggage. If the connection is more than 24 hours, the
domestic allowance applies. Emirates Skywards members travelling
on Qantas domestic flights will be entitled to the same baggage
allowance as Qantas’ matched tier. If you have any queries around
baggage policies and allowance, please contact your travel manager.
The Old Government Building,

earthquake but with repairs on
the building now complete it is
ready once more to open its door

How long have you worked with

Air New Zealand adds
Tokyo, Shanghai flights
Tapping into Asia’s growing
tourism market, Air New Zealand
announced increased services
into Tokyo and Shanghai. The
carrier will now fly daily return
services to Shanghai for the
first time since launching flights
on the route in 2006 as well
as resume daily return flights
between Auckland and Tokyo
for the first time in three years.
What is your top tip for
individual travellers to save on
their business travel?
If you are a traveller that makes
a lot of changes to your itinerary,
booking saver fares to your
destination, and then flexi back
can save quite a bit of money. I find
9 out of 10 times it is the return
that needs to be amended so it’s
a good way to make some savings
while still being flexible.
Suggest one way a SME
business can save on the cost
of their staff travel?
Book in advance where possible.
It has been said before how
important it is but it’s really amazing
the difference a few days or a
week can make to the cost.
Favourite travel experience?
There are so many! Each
destination has so many amazing
aspects and I would say for me
Cambodia was one to remember
- culture, food and history. It is a
truly incredible experience. So far
removed from my everyday life in
New Zealand and that is why I loved
it so much, so different and a great
holiday option.

Professional travel management companies are
still the key to smarter business travel. Having used
the economic downturn as a catalyst for change,
businesses are looking at ways to get the most value
from their travel investment as well as their TMC.
For any company, engaging a Travel Management Company (TMC) is the first
step in a process of ongoing improvement to achieve cost-efficiency across all
elements of your travel.
Small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have unique corporate travel needs.
With limited travel volumes, lower travel budgets and less resources than larger
companies, the focus is on buying business travel at the most competitive cost in
the most convenient way.
The Internet revolution, combined with low-cost carriers and budget hotels, has
certainly changed the way in which SMEs view their travel, but as time-strapped
CEOs and personal assistants spend countless hours trawling the Internet for
fares and managing their own travel arrangements, are the benefits really what
they seem?
When the global financial crisis hit five years ago, businesses were forced to
reduce travel costs and implement more effective policies. That economic
climate became a catalyst for change for businesses, with many SMEs turning
to TMCs for professional travel management.
On the back of the downturn, many companies are now reaping the rewards of
their intelligent decision to partner with an experienced business travel specialist
such as Corporate Traveller.
Working directly with an experienced TMC, companies can implement a good
foundation for booking and buying travel. This includes working with a travel
manager who understands your needs completely and can give you end-to-end
service, improving how your company travels as a whole, educating your people,
effectively negotiating your airfares, maximising the value of your hotel bookings
and ensuring your travellers’ safety. Each of these cost cutting elements is
essential to improving the way you and your employees travel for business.
Looking ahead, businesses are going to become more focused on getting
the most value from their travel investment as well as their TMC. Having a
dedicated Travel Manager 24/7 also means businesses can rest assured
duty of care is looked after and management is updated when any
unforeseen world-wide events occur.
At Corporate Traveller, businesses can be guaranteed cost savings and the
best reported tools, which means saving time for the business.

*a Luxury Night
Corporate Traveller has seen a
significant uptake of SMEs joining
car hire frequent traveller programs.
These programs significantly reduce
the time it takes travellers to organise
their car hire pick-up
because of the swift,
paperless system
they offer.
One such
program is Avis
Preferred. After
your first rental
transaction, your licence and credit
card details are stored so you don’t
need to fill out the paperwork on
subsequent trips. Your name and car
bay number are displayed on a board
at the airport so all you need to do is
go to your car, where the keys and
paperwork are waiting, and drive off.
When you return the vehicle, just show
your licence as you exit the carpark.
With a frequent traveller car hire
program, the pick-up and dropoff process becomes paperless,
queueless and efficient. Passengers
can be walking out of the airport and
driving off in a hire car within minutes.
A similar service, termed the ‘roving
return’, is also available through both
Avis and Hertz at major airport car
parks. It allows you to quickly and
easily drop off a hire car and settle
your account in the airport car park
with a roving attendant from the car
hire company.
When you return your vehicle to the
car park, staff on hand do a quick
check of the vehicle and then provide
an invoice and receipt from
a portable printer on the spot.
The mobile payment and account
settlement capabilities make the
drop-off process extremely efficient.
healthy
tips
When thinking about your car
hire needs you should also
consider the following:
• Bundle your car hire with your air
and hotel bookings. Ensure all
your travel components, including
car hire, is through your travel
manager to maximise savings.
• Consider your individual trip
needs for car hire. Bookings for
two, three, and four-day car hire
have increased during the past
12 months as corporates turn
to car hire rather than taxis for
convenience and cost savings
in line with their travel policies.
• Selecting more economical
classes of car, such as a
compact or economy rather than
a standard or premium model
will minimise the cost of car hire
and fuel.
• Has your company got an
environmentally friendly policy
in place? If your organisation is
implementing, or has already
implemented, a green policy then
it is a great idea to factor this into
your travel policy and consider
hiring a hybrid car.
Don’t let jet lag get
the best of you
Jet lag can prove particularly
troublesome for business travellers
with a schedule to keep and no
time for body clock readjustment.
Although there is no instant cure
for travellers crossing time zones
there are some things you can do
to minimise the impacts.
Get some rest
Staying up late before you fly,
to sleep longer on the plane,
may seem like a good idea
in theory, but you’re better off
boarding the plane well rested.
Stop over
Breaking up the journey and
having a night’s rest may help
to alleviate the impact on your
internal body clock.
Adjust to local time
Don’t go to sleep in your new
destination until it is time to sleep
as per the local time. Similarly, your
body uses food to determine the
time so make sure you eat at the
new meal times for your location.
Reset your body clock
Spend as much time as possible
in the sunshine or outside,
especially in the morning.
Optic nerves and the pineal gland
help to reset the body clock.

Savvy packing
can save you
time and
hassles
• Locking your bags makes it more
At Corporate Traveller, we
understand how important it is for
your travel to be smooth and efficient.
• Mark your bag with a brightly
There’s nothing worse than arriving
at your destination to find that your
luggage has gone astray, with
those all-important documents, your
business suit and more inside.
So here are some packing tips that
will see you hit the ground running.
To help ensure your bags reach
your destination with you:
• Always remove old airline tags and
attach a label with your name and
contact details where you can be
reached at your destination. A copy
inside the bag is a good idea too,
in case the label comes off the bag.
• When you check-in your bags,
make sure you get the correct
number of luggage claim stubs
and that each is marked with the
right destination.
• A void bag damage by securing

difficult for anyone to tamper with
your luggage, but remember to
use TSA-approved luggage locks if
travelling via the USA, where your
bag may be randomly searched.
For a quick exit from the airport:
coloured strap to make it easier to
identify on the baggage carousel.
• Take medication in your carry-on
baggage. Make sure it is in its
original, labelled container and
carry your doctor’s prescriptions
with you.
• Never wrap or package gifts and
souvenirs. If security personnel
need to inspect them, the effort
will be wasted and it will slow your
progress through immigration.
Be prepared
Sometimes even the most careful
planning is not enough. To minimise
the impact of lost luggage, consider
the following:
• Make a list of items you have
packed and their estimated value.
Keep it in a safe place until you
return home.
• Report any missing or damaged
items before you leave the airport,
this will speed up tracing your
luggage and processing claims.
• Power chargers for your phone and
laptop are another must for your
carry-on luggage.
• Make copies of all of your important
travel documents (passport, tickets,
itinerary, drivers licence etc) and
store a set in a pocket of your
carry-on luggage.
• Don’t travel without a USB stick.
• Keep your travel manager’s contact
