Season Outlook With the season upon them, the women’s cross country team is looking to add to the tradition built by the dominant teams before them. This tradition of BYU women’s cross country has won 17 conference titles in a row and competed in 16 consecutive national championship meets. Last season the team was faced with several challenges including losing their No. 1 runner, Kassi Anderson, after being hit by a vehicle while training. Despite the setback the team pulled off an eighth place finish at nationals. This season the Cougars will be striving to continue on the path of dominance and plan on another solid season among the nation’s best teams. “We are just working towards doing what we’ve always done,” coach Patrick Shane said. “The program has a tradition of winning the conference championship and a tradition of going to the national championship and doing well. They are never taken for granted, but we expect to do those sorts of things.” With the experiences of last season, Shane said it will be important for his team to stay healthy this year, and doing this will enable them to see how good they really can be. One of the Cougars biggest strengths this season will be their depth. They will start the season with 35 girls on the roster, which is up from last year’s 22. Shane said this with help his team stay healthy. “We have a large team,” he said. “So we will divide it up into two teams, and one group will run one week and rest the next while the other group runs the next week and then rests.” coach Shane. He said it was one of the best classes in years. Although the team’s top runner from last season graduated, four-time All-American Laura Turner, they are returning several girls who competed last year, giving the team a lot of experience. The Cougars picked up a phenomenal runner in Chelsea Smith-McKell. Although she is new to the team, Shane said she is probably the most experienced. She is a transfer from BYUHawaii where she was the NCAA Division II national champion the last two years. She also won the 2004 Deseret News Marathon. The 2004 Mountain West Conference (MWC) Freshman of the Year Heidi Magill should be one of the top runners for the Cougars. Last season she ran in five meets with her best finish coming at the MWC Championship where she placed third and earned First Team All-MWC. She also earned honors after placing sixth at the NCAA Mountain Regional. She is coming off an excellent track season where she earned All-America honors. “Heidi had a great freshman year last year,” Shane said. “I have every expectation that she will be an All-American in cross country. She has the kind of talent where she could be a top-ten finisher.” Two-time All-American Breanne Sandberg will be one of two runners returning to the team after serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She last raced in 2003 when she earned First Team All-MWC, NCAA All- Mountain honors and All-American. Kristen Ogden, a former transfer from Ricks JC, is the second return missionary coming back to run for the Cougars. She last competed in 2002 when she won her last two races, the Arizona State Invitational and the Pre-Nationals Open Race. “We have two return missionaries (Ogden and Sandberg) that were great when they left on their missions,” Shane said. “Given enough time to get back in shape they are going to be great again.” Other returning runners who should have an impact are Julie Cameron-Meads, Amber Harper, Anne Heiner, Sarah Ingebretsen and Carolyn Quebe. “We have a strong nucleus of returning runners from last year,” Shane said. The 2005 recruiting class should also make a great contribution for the team according to In addition there are some freshmen that Shane said he thinks might be some of his top runners this year. A few that stand out are Amy Fowler, Jocelyn Gardner, Sarah Hansen and Aubrey White. “We got some very good distance runners,” he said. “Some of them are kind of unknown. They went under the radar so to speak, but I can assure you they are talented.” The Cougars will be hosting three meets this season including this year’s Mountain Regional on Nov. 12. The season begins with two home meets, the Alumni Invitational and the Autumn Classic. The Alumni Invitational will be on Sep. 3. On Sep. 10, the Cougars will play host at Cascade Golf Course for the Autumn Classic. The team then hits the road to Hawaii for the Big Wave Invitational on Sep. 17. From there they travel to Cary, N.C. on Sep. 24, to the Great America Invitational. On Oct. 15 the team will race the course where the NCAA Championship will be, in Terre Haute, Ind., in the Pre-Nationals Meet. This season’s MWC Championship is on Oct. 29 in Fort Collins, Colo. The Cougars will then play host for the NCAA Mountain Regional Meet on November 12, and the NCAA Championship will be on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. “The schedule is very similar to what we have always had,” Shane said. “It’s a good schedule. We are looking forward to hosting the Mountain Regional. It is always fun to run at home in a championship format.” Shane said he feels good about this season and is excited to see how good the team can become. He said come November he feels the team will represent the university and themselves quite well. Since his arrival, Coach Shane has turned the team into a team of dominance. With four NCAA National Championships and three runner-up finishes in the past eight years, Shane has built a team that is nationally recognized as the team to beat each year. Under the reign of Shane, the Cougars have powered their way into the national spotlight winning back-to-back national championships in 2001 and 2002. In his 24 seasons as coach of the Cougars, Shane has been named the National Cross Country Coach of the Year three times, with his most recent coming in 2002. In 1997, Shane and his team became the first BYU women’s team to win a national title. Since then, he has guided his team to three national championships in 1999, 2000 and 2001. With four national titles under their feet, the Cougars stand alone as the only BYU team to have four national championships. Since 1981, when the NCAA took over women’s athletics, Shane’s teams have missed the national meet only twice. Throughout his coaching tenure at BYU, the women’s team has finished in the top ten 18 times and finished 22 times in the top twenty. In 1989, the BYU women’s cross country team had a 16th-place finish in an NCAA meet, which is the lowest finish for any of Shane’s teams. Shane has coached six Olympic runners and 46 All-American cross country runners. His cross country teams have captured 23 conference championships. Since joining the Mountain West Conference in 1999, the Cougars have been the dominant team winning the conference title every year. When Shane took the helm as BYU’s women’s cross country coach in 1981, he took a team built from scratch and finished first at the AIAW District VII meet. The team went on to take sixth at the AIAW National Championships. Shane’s teams have won 16 NCAA District 7 Championships. Shane was twice named IAC Coach of the Year, HCAC Coach of the Year four times, District VII Coach of the Year nine times, WAC Coach of the Year six times, and four times he has been named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. On top of that, he was named the NCAA National Coach of the Year in 1997, 2000 and 2001. Coach Shane helped develop the USATF Coaching Education Program. He was selected to be the junior women’s coach for the 1995 World Cross Country Championships in Durham, England. In 1999, Shane was chosen as the senior women’s coach for the 1999 World Cross Country Championships in Portugal. Shane is married to the former Kerrilyn Taylor. During Labor Day weekend the Cougars’ top-returning runner and All-American Kassi Andersen was hit by a truck while biking. Andersen was out for the cross country and track seasons. At the Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., the Cougars faced the other national contenders for the first time. Once again, Turner pounded it out for the Cougars as she took fourth overall and helped her team take fourth-place honors in the 6K race. “We struggled early in the year,” Shane said. “But we can be grateful for a lot of things. It’s times like these that remind you of what you should be grateful for.” This year marked the 17th straight conference championship for the Cougars as they swept the Mountain West Conference defeating Colorado State by 35 points in San Diego, Calif. Turner finished first in the 6K race and following her in second and third were teammates Chesser and Magill. Turner was honored for her efforts as she took home the MWC Women’s Athlete of the Year award. Magill was honored as MWC Women’s Freshman of the Year, an award BYU has won two years in a row. Along with the conference title, the women placed six athletes on the All-MWC teams. Turner, Chesser and Magill earned firstteam All-MWC honors as Amber Harper, Jami Caldwell and Cameron earned second-team All-MWC honors. Despite losing their top runner, the pack held tight and finished strong. The Cougars placed first, second and eighth in the MWC, NCAA Mt. Regional and NCAA National Championships respectively. BYU kicked off the season with a perfect 15 point win at the BYU Alumni Invitational. Anne Heiner finished the 5K event first in 18:58.3. On the following week, the Cougars looked impressive in front of over 3,000 fans at the BYU Autumn Classic. Coach Shane asked the women to stay together for the first mile at a six minute mile pace. Senior Rena Chesser led the pack thereafter placing first in the 5K with a time of 17:55.1. That same week the Cougars were ranked as the third best women’s cross country team in division one of the NCAA. On October 1, BYU headed east to the Great American Festival in Charlotte, N.C. Laura Turner made an impressive showing in her first race of the season. Turner finished first for the Cougars and fourth overall in the 6k event. She was named MWC Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week. Chesser had a second-place finish for the Cougars and Freshman Heidi Magill finished third in her first collegiate race. The Cougars achieved a perfect 15 points overall at the Pre Mountain West Conference Championships, in San Diego, Calif. Julie Cameron won the overall title as she finished the 6K race in 23:11. Following Cameron’s lead was Carolyn Quebe who finished second as teammate Sara Ingebretsen took home third place honors. Just a week later, BYU ran in the NCAA Mt. Regionals took home second place, following 22 points behind Colorado State, in Fort Collins, Colo. Once again, Turner led the Cougars as she finished the 6K event in third place overall. Following closely behind her were Magill and Chesser, rounding out six and seventh overall. The same six Cougars who were honored as All-MWC honors, Turner, Magill, Chesser, Harper, Cameron and Caldwell, each earned NCAA Mt. Region honors. The team returned to Terrre Haute, Ind., for the final meet of the year. The Cougars took home an eighth place finish in the 6K race. Turner, who placed fourth overall, became the second women in BYU cross country’s history to earn four All-American citations. Despite the women’s eighth place finish, Shane is proud of the way his team handled the adversity and obstacles that came before them early in the season. “I’m pleased with our eighth place finish,” Shane said. “It’s been an unusual year; it’s been a faith builder.” This finish gives the women 20 top ten finishes in a national competition, seven of which have been in the top two. 27 2004 Meet Results 2004 MEET RESULTS NCAA NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS Nov 22 , Terre Haute, Indiana Top Runner – Laura Turner – 4th place – 20:38 Team = 8th place – Points = 293 – Race 6K NCAA MT. The Cougars dominance helped them to win nine of the 18 conference championships, shared the titles in football and soccer, captured the regular-season volleyball title and finished 18th in the final Sears Director Cup standings. During that same year, the BYU’s women’s cross country team captured the MWC’s first national championship and repeated that feat in 2001 and 2002. In 2000-2001, BYU continued to role forward by capturing 16 of the 19 MWC titles. BYU’s athletic achievement helped them finish the season ranked 12th in the final Sears Directors Cup standings. In 2001-2002, BYU won 11 of 19 MWC titles, including a repeat of men’s outdoor track, the team’s fifth consecutive title. At the end of the season the Cougars found themselves ranked 23rd in the final Sears Directors Cup standings. In 2002-2003, the Cougars captured 8 of 19 MWC championships. BYU finished the season ranked 24th in the final Sears Directors Cup standings. In 2003-2004, the Cougars captured 8 of 19 MWC titles and finished the season ranked 29th in the Sears Director Cup standings. In 2004-2005, BYU won 8 of 19 MWC titles and a share of the regular season title for men’s swimming. BYU also finished the season ranked 27th in the Sears Directors Cup. 2004 Mountain West Conference Champions: 17th Straight Conference Championship All-Americans Melanie Steere Courtney Pugmire Tara Northcutt Jessie Kindschi Michaela Mannova Academic All-Americans NAME Melanie Steere Susan Taylor Sharolyn Shields Tara Northcutt Tara Northcutt Elizabeth Jackson Sharolyn Shields Maggie Chan Maggie Chan Caisa Monahan Emily Nay Maggie Chan Marty Aparicio Angela Lee Heather Witney Dorota Buczkowska Margi Weber Leanne Whitesides Nicole Birk GPA 3.91 3.96 3.81 3.58 3.74 3.27 3.90 3.81 3.46 3.92 3.64 3.58 3.49 3.76 3.49 3.38 3.48 3.37 3.36 MAJOR YEAR Dietetics 2000 English 1999 Fitness Management 1999 Health Sciences 1999 Social Work 1998 Business Mktg. 1998 Fit./Wellness Mgt. 1998 Dietetics 1998 Dietetics 1997 Business 1997 Elementary Edu. 1997 Dietetics 1996 Psychology 1995 English 1994 Physical Edu. 1993 Business Mgmnt. 1992 English 1992 Health 1991 Health 1990 Elizabeth Jackson Maggie Chan NAME Laura Turner Michaela Mannova Kassi Andersen Laura Turner Breanne Sandberg Michaela Mannova Kassi Andersen Katie Martin Breanne Sandberg Michaela Mannova Tara Northcutt Jessie Kindschi Lindsey Thomsen Sarah Taylor Nan Evans Melanie Steere Tara Northcutt Kara Ormond Tara Northcutt Sharolyn Shields Laura Heiner Maggie Chan Sharolyn Shields Laura Heiner Elizabeth Jackson Courtney Pugmire Maggie Chan Elizabeth Jackson Courtney Pugmire Maggie Chan Elizabeth Jackson Janeth Alder Courtney Pugmire Dorota Buczkowska Leanne Whitesides Nicole Keller Birk Leanne Martin Noeleen Mullan Noeleen Mullan Angela Cook Julie Jenkins Jill Holiday Jill Holiday Care May edge Carey May Edge Janell Neeley NCAA 4th 4th 13th 14th 31st 5th 7th 15th 28th 5th 9th 7th 23rd 24th 36th 17th 18th 16th 17th 23rd 26th 7th 13th 31st 36th 5th 13th 22nd 12th 22nd 27th 14th 27th 8th 25th 22nd 22nd 22nd 22nd 25th 17th 23rd 22nd 21st 2nd 16th YEAR 2004 2003 2003 2003 2003 2002 2002 2002 2002 2001 2001 2001 2001 2001 2001 2000 2000 1999 1999 1999 1999 1998 1998 1998 1998 1997 1997 1997 1996 1996 1996 1995 1995 1992 1991 1990 1989 1988 1987 1987 1986 1984 1983 1982 1981 1981 Lindsey Thomsen Sarah Taylor Sharolyn Shields Nan Evans Laura Turner Kassi Andersen 31 BYU’s Four-Time National Champions For the past 24 years as BYU’s women’s cross country coach, Patrick Shane has worked to establish his program into one of the elite programs in the country. With 23 conference championships, 16 NCAA District VII championships, 18 top ten finishes and four NCAA national championships, Coach Shane and his runners have done just that. Only twice has Coach Shane’s teams not been in the national championship meet. In the last seven years, excluding this past season, the women’s cross country team has finished the season either first or second in the nation. Two years ago, the Cougars entered the NCAA Cross Country Championships ranked No. 1 in the nation. Despite a great effort, the Cougars (128) finished runner-up to the Stanford Cardinal (120) by eight points. Michaela Mannova, Kassi Anderson, Breanne Sanberg and Laura Turner earned All-American honors. Along with earning her third All-American 32 award, Mannova was honored as the MWC Women’s Athlete of the Year. The formula for success can be found within the team. Each individual athlete understands and is committed to putting the time and effort it takes to become the best. Along with the teams focus, Coach Shane’s ability to structure their training so the entire team peaks at the right moment is something he’s learned to master. In fact, excluding 2004, in the last nine years the women’s team has left the NCAA Championships with two or more All-Ameri- cans.
