THE
TRUTH ABOUT
VITAMINS
By Wyatt Myers
Vitamin supplements are no longer
viewed as the miracle cures they
once were. Are there any you
should still take? We asked the
experts to find out.
Following health news can often be a roller coaster ride. Something that’s
considered good for you one day can be bad the next, and then good
again before you know it. Coffee and eggs are two recent examples.
Now, it seems that vitamin supplements have jumped onto this health
news roller coaster. No less than a decade ago, a number of vitamin
supplements, including vitamin E, vitamin C and others, were seen as
miracle cures that could end colds, protect your body against heart
disease and promote overall health. Now that news has softened, and
many vitamin supplements are seen as a waste of time and money.
6
BROWARD HEALTH
Are Vitamins Essential? Considering this, should you
simply ignore the vitamin aisle entirely? Opinions are mixed, but some
experts believe there is still value in certain supplements to promote
overall good health and prevent illness. For example, vitamin C is
one supplement that may serve some value when it comes to the
common cold. “Vitamin C has been shown to improve the function of
certain immune cells necessary for fighting infections,” said Michael
Smith, MD, a physician and supplement expert in Fort Lauderdale,
Fla. “Is vitamin C a 100 percent guarantee of cold prevention? Of
course not. But if you do get infected by the cold virus, you’ll be able
to fight it better, and the cold symptoms won’t last as long.”
One message that major health organizations have reinforced with
greater emphasis in recent years, however, is that over-reliance
on supplements is unhealthy, and people should focus more on a
healthy, balanced and nutrient rich diet instead to get their daily
nutrient needs. “The position of the American Dietetic Association
is that the best strategy for promoting optimal health and reducing
the risk of chronic disease is to wisely choose a wide variety of
nutrient rich foods,” said Dee Sandquist, a registered dietitian and

Do you know how to protect

Bright, sunny days are one of the best parts about

he advised.
A NEW APPROACH TO APPLICATION.
Traditionally, the rule when it came to sunscreen was, “reapply
every two to three hours.” But Dr. Jaggernauth says that approach
may be changing somewhat. “Some research has shown that the
best protection is achieved by application 15 to 30 minutes before
exposure, followed by one reapplication 15 to 30 minutes after
the sun exposure begins,” he said. “Further reapplication is only

While it’s true that the sun certainly feels hotter and brighter in

sunscreen rules apply to everyone. “It really depends on multiple

Your Guide
TO SUMMER FITNESS
By Charlotte Libov
Summer brings sunshine and warm
temperatures no matter where in
the country you live, but for those
in South Florida, the season can
be a mixed blessing.
We all want to enjoy fitness activities outdoors, but when Mother
Nature turns up the heat, we can broil more easily, and even
court sunstroke. But the good news is that while staying fit and
active throughout summer does require a few precautions, with
just a little planning you can enjoy the outdoors all season long.
WATCH OUT FOR THE SUN
During summer, the sun moves more directly overhead, making
its rays more intense. This can spell danger, especially if you’re
exercising outdoors, which includes walking. While walking is
a great way to pump up your cardiovascular fitness, just be sure
to steer clear of the hours between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when
the sun is the strongest. Take an early morning or evening walk
instead.

Each year, millions of Americans are sickened by food poisoning,

your body cools you by sweating. As long as you replace

To stay hydrated, drink one to three
cups of water before heading outside, and then continue
drinking water at 20-minute intervals or so while you’re
exercising, and drink water afterwards as well. Not only
water counts; choose foods that contain water like the aptly
named “watermelon.” Avoid alcoholic beverages, though,
as they are dehydrating.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

M.J.’s parents, Natasha and Michelo Sr., were determined to
provide a better life for their son, the “light of their life.” They
left home in July 2010 to bring M.J. to Chris Evert Children’s
Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center (BHMC).
They knew M.J.’s road to full recovery would be a long one and
that they would need an affordable place to stay while their
son would undergo countless days of intensive care. Thankfully
for the McKenzies, the light has been on at the Fort Lauderdale
Ronald McDonald House, located on the grounds of BHMC,
since 2004.
The 20-bedroom facility serves as a home away from home
for families with critically ill children receiving treatment at
South Florida hospitals. No family is ever turned away from the
Ronald McDonald House, regardless of their ability to pay, a
policy that Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida,
currently celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2012, hasn’t
changed since day one. For a family in unfamiliar territory, like
the McKenzies, that news provided an enormous sigh of relief.
“The House is a blessing, and the folks at the Ronald McDonald
House are truly a dream team,” said Natasha. “The staff and
volunteers deserve a tremendous amount of credit for the
progress M.J. has made.”
Those staff members, volunteers and community partners keep
the 14,050-square-foot facility operating 24 hours a day,
365 days a year. More than 150 families from all over the
world use the House’s amenities, which offer a brief return to
normalcy after the harrowing ordeal of a child’s hospitalization.
The House provides other creature comforts, including a kitchen
and dining area, laundry room, library with Internet access,
community room for private meetings and, most importantly,
plenty of indoor and outdoor play areas for the kids.
M.J. and his family still live at the Fort Lauderdale Ronald
McDonald House. After rounds of treatment and care over
the past year and half, the doctors at Chris Evert Children’s
Hospital helped M.J. eventually regain his vision.
Michelo “M.J.” McKenzie, Jr., enjoys some South Florida sun with his
mother, Natasha, at the Fort Lauderdale Ronald McDonald House.
While he
still has months of therapy ahead of him, M.J. and his family
can finally see the light at the end of the road…returning home
to the Bahamas.
The first 20 months of Michelo “M.J.” McKenzie Jr.’s young
life have been an eye-opening experience. His journey
began in the Bahamas, where doctors had diagnosed him
with sickle-cell anemia. His condition, however, took a turn
for the worse: M.J. lost his vision and hearing in one ear.

FOODS
RESTAURANTS
& PLACES TO EAT
By Typhanie Stewart
There’s little debate that organic foods are better for our bodies and
for the planet. We do our best to avoid pesticides and additives
that sneak onto our plates through conventionally grown and
over-processed foods. Luckily, healthy and delectable alternatives
abound. Local organic farmers and restaurants committed to
serving fresh, local foods are no rarity in Broward. Here’s a list to
get you started.

ORGANIC FOODS
1) Peaches, Apricots, Apples & Grapes
7) Bananas
Fruits with edible skin are found to have the most pesticide residue
when grown conventionally, which is why they should be at the top
of your organic shopping list.
You may be thinking that the pesticides farmers use while growing
conventional bananas are no big deal because you peel the fruit,
but these chemicals are not just on the outside skin of the banana.
They contaminate the soil that is used to grow the produce.
2) Berries
When it comes to berries, it’s always best to buy them in season
from your local organic farmer’s market. Enjoy cherries in the spring
and strawberries in the summer in yummy snacks and desserts.
3) Rice
Nowadays, it’s especially important to buy organic rice due to
the popularity of “pharm” rice, a crop used to produce and store
pharmaceuticals. Organic rice has been found to contain more iron
and less copper than conventional rice, and it’s tastier, too.
4) Bell Peppers
Red, green and yellow peppers are a good source of Vitamin C,
but they are susceptible to a variety of pests and diseases. To fight
against these problems, conventionally grown pepper fields are
sprayed with various pesticides before, during and after the growth
cycle.
8) Green Beans
USDA tests have found more than 60 different pesticides on green
beans. Among the essential organic veggies of summer, green
beans are easy to grow in a wide range of soils without fertilizer. If
you don’t have a green thumb, start with simple, fast-growing green
beans.
9) Celery
If you have a hard time finding organic celery, try substituting it with
a similar crunch provided by broccoli, radishes or onions.
10) Potatoes
Prone to a number of pests and diseases during the growth cycle,
potatoes are more difficult to grow organically. But when you find
organic potatoes, you’ve hit the jackpot. Sweet potatoes are also a
delicious alternative with less pesticide residue than white potatoes.
5) Milk
Organic milk is defined by the USDA as milk from exclusively grassfed cows that have not been treated with hormones or antibiotics.
Non-organic milk contains antibiotics and growth hormones and
poses potential health risks. Although organic milk is harder to find,
it’s worth the search.
6) Corn
About 85 percent of corn in the United States is genetically
engineered in order to be herbicide tolerant and insect resistant.
This corn is what’s most often used in a number of foods, drinks and
even the feed given to animals that are later prepared for human
consumption. Give your body a break from fake corn, and get the
real thing by going organic.

A NEW
APPROACH TO
YOUNG ATHLETE
CONCUSSIONS
By Wyatt Myers
Broward County and Broward Health have taken groundbreaking steps toward
managing concussions in high school athletes. Here’s what they have done, and how
it might be a model for the country moving forward.
From professional sports leagues all the way down to youth
athletics, the head injury known as a concussion has been a
growing issue for several years now. A number of alarming
concussion-related stories, paired with an increased
scientific understanding of the true risks of the injury, have
brought it to the forefront of concern for doctors, coaches,
parents and, of course, athletes. The clamor has grown so
loud that even the mighty NFL tightened their concussion
policy in late 2009 to further ensure player safety.
34 BROWARD HEALTH
According to several scientific studies, one group that is
particularly at risk of severe concussion symptoms is young
athletes. Research has shown that a younger athlete is more
likely to develop Second Impact Syndrome after a concussion.
While rare, this disorder causes brain swelling after head
trauma and can be potentially fatal. One study on Second
Impact Syndrome discovered 94 of these head injuries over a
13-year period, and only two of those 94 occurred in collegelevel sports. The rest were in younger children. What’s more,
71 percent of high school players who experienced Second
Concussions Hit Close to Home
The extensive experience of Walters and his staff with baseline
concussion testing was already important. But in 2011, it became
extremely relevant locally, as well. In May of that year, a local high
school student named Daniel Brett took his own life after nearly
two years of battling severe post-concussion symptoms related to
playing football. Parents and administrators believed that Brett’s
outcome could have been different with a greater understanding
and knowledge of his injuries.
Impact Syndrome had received a concussion earlier in the

of the Broward County School Board and a noted local parent
Another frightening concern when it comes to youth concussions
is the fact that the number of them seems to be increasing. In
a 2010 study published in the journal “Pediatrics,” researchers
analyzed all concussion-related emergency room visits in U.S.
children ages 8 to 19 from 1997 until 2007. What they found
was that though participation in organized team sports actually
declined during that period, the number of emergency room
visits for concussions more than doubled. The researchers found
activist, swept into action. She proposed a school board resolution
that would require mandatory baseline testing for all high school
athletes in Broward County schools. The resolution took one of the
most aggressive stances against concussions in the nation, and
many see it as a model that all school boards should follow when
it comes to concussion testing. “We are now at the forefront on
the issue of baseline testing for concussions,” Levinson said. The
school board passed the resolution in March 2012.
this fact alarming and noted that more research in this area is
recommended.

Despite the extra work involved, most individuals involved see
this as a positive step forward for the safety of student athletes.
The other positive news about the Broward County concussion
completely through the 2013-2014 school year.
Of course, the actual testing portion of the Broward County
School Board resolution is only half of the challenge. The other
critical part of the program, explained Levinson, is educating
staff, students and parents about the true risks of concussions,
why the program is being implemented and what the schools
hope to achieve with the program.
Here again, the staff at Broward Health will play a key role
in this effort. First of all, athletic trainers need to be trained
on how to use the equipment and interpret the results of
the tests. Walters and his staff will be the go-to group for
this effort.

newsletters, stories on the in-house TV station that the students

The Future of Concussion Awareness
Though the jury is still out on just how effective the Broward

concussions will be, all parties involved are very optimistic
about its chances to succeed. “Before we implemented baseline
testing, there was no real way to accurately diagnose the

employee John DiSalvo, June was about to bring to
light just how many coincidences permeate everyday
life. While Broward Health Coral Springs continued
its 25th anniversary celebrations, DiSalvo would
turn 25, even as he awaited the birth of his firstborn
son, at the hospital where he was delivered.
The DiSalvo family is joined by Dr. Amanda DeSouza.

The most
names in healthcare.
The changes are so slight, you might not even notice them.
And you can still count on the power and nationally recognized
excellence of Broward’s largest healthcare network. The only
difference is that we’ve slightly altered the names of our
hospitals, to make it clearer that Broward Health is a
sophisticated, unified, fully integrated healthcare system. Which
means better sharing of knowledge, medical records, expertise,
technology, and other resources. That translates into better
healthcare overall. Only now there’s slightly less to translate.

Joints wear out.
Dreams don’t have to.
Summiting Mt. Whitney is no small accomplishment. Doing it at the age
of 49 is even more impressive. Doing it when a walk to the mailbox
seemed insurmountable just months earlier -- that’s Powerful Medicine.
The highest standard of orthopedic care:
Broward Health patient Tom McCarthy
(right) 2.7 miles above sea level.
Conquering Mt. Whitney had been Tom McCarthy’s dream for many years. So when a decadesold knee injury began getting worse -- to the point where it was limiting his mobility -- he turned
to Dr. Erol Yoldas, one of Broward Health’s orthopedic specialists. And a potentially debilitating
condition went from mountain to molehill.
That’s not to say it was easy. The delicate surgery involved replacing Tom’s ACL (anterior cruciate
ligament) with tissue from his hamstring tendon, followed by extensive rehab and strengthening
work with Broward Health therapists. But Tom wouldn’t let anything block his path up the
mountain. And five months after surgery, he signed the logbook at the summit of Mt. Whitney.
Your ambitions may not be as lofty as Tom’s. But that’s not the point. What matters is that you
don’t have to let joint and ligament damage get in the way of enjoying life. Not when some of the
finest orthopedic specialists in the country are here at Broward Health -- just a phone call away.

A dream come true: “49th birthday!
5 months post-op. Thanks, Dr. Yoldas!”
