FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 14, 2014 CONTACT: Rachel Stich o: (310) 394-6162 x108 c:(818) 636-2033 [email protected] Hundreds Stand-Up Paddle for Clean Water at Paradise Cove Beach in Malibu April 14, 2014 (Malibu, CA) — On Saturday April 12, 2014, over 350 people attended Los Angeles Waterkeeper’s annual Stand-Up For Clean Water paddleboard race at Paradise Cove in Malibu to raise awareness about water quality issues and the importance of clean water in Los Angeles County. In collaboration with Waterkeeper Alliance’s SPLASH series, the event featured a 5 Mile Competitive Race, 1 Mile Fun Race, and Relay Race for stand-up and prone paddlers. Famous surfers and paddlers including Mickey Munoz, Sam George, Jamie Mitchell and Jim Terrell were among the hundreds of racers participating. Following the race, guests enjoyed food and drinks donated by Paradise Cove Beach Café and New Belgium Brewing while listening to an all-star celebrity band. Band members included Rami Jaffee (keyboardist of Foo Fighters and Wallflowers), Dave Krusen (former drummer of Pearl Jam), Christopher Thorn (guitarist of Blind Melon, Live and Awol Nation), Jessy Greene (former violinist of Foo Fighters, Wilco and Pink), Jonny Kaplan (singer/guitarist of Jonny Kaplan and the Lazy Stars), and a guest performance by Alicia Murphy. “LA Waterkeeper is proud to partner with the SUP community to celebrate and raise funds for our common goal to clean up LA’s rivers and beaches,” said Liz Crosson, Executive Director of Los Angeles Waterkeeper during the opening remarks of the Awards Ceremony. “Thank you to all of our supporters rd and volunteers for making the 3 Annual Stand-Up For Clean Water at Paradise Cove our best SUP race yet.” The Awards Ceremony program featured Waterkeeper Alliance’s National Director Pete Nichols, event sponsors Dan Wieten of Toyota and Ali Poosti of the LA Bureau of Sanitation, and special guest Sam George. “What was so fantastic about LA Waterkeeper’s Stand-Up For Clean Water event at Paradise Cove was the sense of community it fostered, inspiring a collective effort in the fight for a cleaner, healthier ocean environment,” said George, writer, director and Senior Editor-in-Chief for SUP Magazine.
