So it is official now - Spring has arrived! I want to thank Renee and Charlie Brown for their wonderful presentation detailing their two-summer cruising adventures on Rhapsody in the upper Great Lakes. Everyone that I talked with enjoyed their presentation and learned something useful about cruising. I’m looking forward to their next adventure – vicariously of course! Who says that Rochester Yacht Club sailors only have a 3 month sailing season? I am pleased to see so many of our members participating in events in far away places. Key West Race Week - PHRF 2 (7 Boats) - 2 - Jack Cavalier, Etchells Jaguar Cup Series (53 Boats - 4 Regattas) - 3rd Overall - Flipper Wehrheim , J/24 Midwinter Championship (27 Boats) - 9 - Flipper Wehrheim; 16 - Travis Odenbach J/22 Mid-Winter Championship (33 Boats) - 5 - Travis Odenbach; Jim Barnash St. Pete NOOD Regatta - J/24 (20 Boats)- 2 - Mike Ingham; 3 - Travis Odenbach Thistle Mid-Winters East (46 Boats) - 4 - Mike Ingham, Cayman Island Invitational – J/22 (12 Boats) - 5 - Marc Fischer, St Barths Bucket Regatta (40 Super Yachts) - Hank & Mary Stuart, Texas Team Race Shoot Out (3x3) - Sonar - Gunnar Richardson, Eric Snavely, Eric Voss, Caribbean Cruise Charter – Gardner’s, Bryant’s & Lai’s – (knowing them - they will be racing), Charleston Race Week - Travis Odenbach, Sarah Enright, Mike Ingham & Peter Cucci Other RYC members crewing and making their skippers look smart include Bill Farmer, Jack Odenbach, Jon Faudree, Bob Bryant, Jeff Sullivan, Skylar Munger, Scott Napier, Karen Sladden, Tim Sladden, Liz Bower, Mark Lawless, Donna Faust, Curtis Gilbert, and Noah Doolittle. Thanks to all for representing Rochester Yacht Club and helping to elevate our Club’s stature all round the sailing world! It is always risky to name people, so I offer my apology to anyone that I’ve missed. The Racing Fleet meeting is planned for Wednesday April 27, so mark your calendar and please plan to attend. Several initiatives have been considered and will be discussed. Here at RYC, John Odenbach has been promoting and lobbying for RYC to shift to IRC racing. With the IRC North American Championships in Toronto this summer, an opportunity for greater RYC member participation has developed. Tarry Polidor has offered to help our members get IRC measured, and he is waiving the measurer’s fee to help get this started. We are continuing to offer the Racing Crew Membership – without any changes to the program. $200.00 Fee – grants privileges on scheduled race nights from May until Cups ‘N Flags. Please encourage your crew to participate – not only is it the right thing to do - but they can splurge and buy their favorite skipper (that’s you) a drink and dinner after racing. For our less serious racers, we are planning to give boats an “RYC-JAM” rating (Jib and Main), and include all RYC sail boats on our Friday Night “Fish Fry Race” roster to encourage participation. We believe that it has become overly difficult to participate in what are supposed to be “fun” activities. On the Collegiate Racing Circuit, I can report that RYC is represented by many graduates of our Youth and High School sailing programs. Did you know that we are currently represented by Killian Corbishley at The US Naval Academy, Merrit Moran at Georgetown U., Julia Gardner at George Washington U., Graham Gardner at Fordham U., Sam Ingham at The US Coast Guard Academy, Roy Ingham at RIT, and Ainsley Thomson at St. Mary’s College, Kira Munger at Christopher Newport U., Julia Weisner at Old Dominion U., Olivia Graham at Bentley College, Serena Lofftus at Boston College, Alden Sonnenfeld at Cornell U. and Matt Guenther sailing at Stevens Institute? I am hopeful that all these bright young adults will find their way back to sail with us at RYC in the future. Our membership activity cycle is now entering our busy season. So please remember to contact Betsy Lawless if someone that you know expresses interest in joining our Club. Our membership committee really appreciates your help and support through the membership process. Susie and I hope to see you at the Club soon. Fair winds, Keith Burhans, Commodore 3 Rochester Yacht Club RYC Board of Directors Meeting RYC Board of Directors March 17, 2011 Meeting Highlights Commodore Keith Burhans called the meeting to order at 1918. Treasurer John Miraglia reported that February was a good month for the club. Revenue exceeded the budget forecast by a small margin of $269. Food and Beverage margins were running slightly behind budget, however spring and summer are just around the corner and should give the house a boost. Winter repairs to club-owned boats contributed to most of the negative expense variance of $5105 for the month, but still leaving the club with a $9000 positive variance for the year-to-date. Club Manager Mary Smith reported that we have a new staff member, James Hennessey, at the bar and two interns start in May. The Burgee Bar will be ready to open in April. Recent events included the popular Southern Rendezvous and a program with a physical therapist about avoiding sports injuries. Summer sailing youth programs signup is currently being taken on-line. Sunday’s waffle and omelet stations continue. Frost biters are finally sailing. Friday April 1st is the next happy hour, with beer tasting and Empire liquor tasting with William Hill wine. April 6 continues winter Wednesdays. Joni Hardy will talk on organizing. April 8-10 is kids weekend with supervised activities for younger children and upstairs games for older kids. Saturday night will feature children’s theater and will finish by 7PM to accommodate the little ones. Sunday will be pasta, bingo, and orientation to summer sail programs. Wear you summer clothes. April 13 Hank Stuart and Laurent Esquier will host an America’s Cup discussion. April 16 is Prime Rib night and on the 19th the club will open for lunch for the season. April 23rd brings Breakfast with the Easter Bunny and an Egg Hunt. Last year there were 1000 eggs to be found. Be sure to make reservations for the Easter Brunch on April 24th. Racing season gets underway with racing fleet skippers meeting on April 27. It is, also, April “Ladies Night Out”. April 29th will be a return of the popular wine dinner, a “Tour of France” with Chris Fox. Don’t miss it. Skip Shumway promised a beautiful weekend on April 30th for the annual “Fools Regatta”! Tim Sladden reported on team racing. It’s much different than regular racing and great fun, even for the inexperienced. Racers will be on the water for the next ~5 Saturdays and there are several future events where RYC teams will compete. Tim also reported some suggestions from a group of committee chairs on their vision for the future of sail racing at the club. A strong sailing program contributes much value to RYC and there are many ways that we can support the strength of our sail instruction and racing programs. Membership Committee Director Betsy Lawless welcomed new member Todd Howe. Prospective members Peter Rivoli and Sophie Esquier are ready to post. Currently we have 337 total resident members, 2 higher than February. Jon Faudree reported that the Centrals Regatta will be in Cazenovia July 9-10. RYC will have at least one 420 competing in North Americans in Buffalo. HS sailing starts Monday. Thank you to Bud Webb and Miles Bliss for all their hard work. Boats look awesome. Docks are in, thank you to Skip Shumway and Steve Wilde. The HS program has gained around 15 new racers. Betsy Lawless did a great job getting on-line registration up and running. The staff has been hired and scheduling done. Natalie Steo reported that in April RJYC members are helping the Women’s Association with Easter events and they also have boat washes planned as a fundraiser. Hank Stuart reported for the Rolex and Hospice regattas. Plans are coming together for both events. RYC will also host the 2012 LYRA Stoltz Cup that is the selection race for the Richardson Cup Linda Gardner reported for the Women’s Racing Association. The association is recruiting “old” and new women to participate. May 5th they will rig boats and start racing on May 12. Bud Webb says spring is wonderful! The floating docks are in.The 420s are launched and on the dock. A security upgrade included clubhouse critical systems and a boiler sensor. It has already proved its worth when the boiler malfunctioned and the alarm saved the day! Pool supplies are being ordered. The sail dock in the east basin has been improved. Commodore Burhans reiterated our thanks to Bud Webb and Miles Bliss for their work on the 420s. The discussion on the proposed purchase of the small parcel of property near our entrance was reopened. After hearing appraisal details and contract options available to the club, it was decided that the club would authorize counsel, John D’Aurizio to pursue and negotiate a purchase and sale agreement with the City of Rochester for the land. Meeting adjourned by Commodore Burhans at 2050 hours. Respectfully submitted, Cheryl Evans Recording Secretary 4 Rochester Yacht Club To RYC Offshore Fleet: The fleet captains are meeting this winter to plan for the upcoming season. We will be doing everything possible to get more boats out racing! RYC club racing events have been posted on-line in the RYC calendar. The Memorial Day race is scheduled for the Monday holiday. Offshore racing will be held on Wednesday nights with both spinnaker and JAM (jib and main) divisions, Friday JAM races and monthly Sunday Pursuit Races. These were a lot of fun last year so come out and give one a try. For those boats that have not been racing - we encourage you to come out and join the fun. We will be making it easier than ever with “instant” registration and ratings. Just show up and we’ll take care of the rest. All that we ask is that you let the Race Committee know when you come out to race. Need crew or someone with racing experience to provide some advice? No problem - just let us know and we will give you a hand. Based on interest expressed by a number of Division 1 boats, they will be racing under the IRC measurement rule this season. Contact John Odenbach or Tarry Polidor if you would like to race Div 1 and get measured or be assigned a temporary rating for this season. Tarry is graciously offering his time to complete the measurement process - so don’t miss out on this opportunity! We will be looking to form the other divisions, so please let your fleet captain or me know of your preferred fleet (IRC or PHRF) and which events you plan to participate in. Also, please let us know if you have any ideas on how to further improve the racing program. Thank you, Eric Voss Racing Fleet Captain REGISTRATION FORMS NOW AVAILABLE ON-LINE Click on the following: Youth Summer Sailing RYC Learn to Swim MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE SUMMARY March 17, 2011 Resident 337 Associate Non Resident 109 Ancient Mariner Student 8 Surviving Spouse Privileges 29Political Total Active Membership 576 15 51 23 4 Leave of Absence 0 33 Total Inactive Membership Military Leave 33 5 Rochester Yacht Club RYC ‘S 7TH ANNUAL SOUTH RENDEZVOUS A reunion of Club Friends at Captiva Island Yacht Club RYC Summer 2011 Club Cruise through Bay of Quinte Participate in the RYC Cruise Planning! This event, sponsored by the Rochester Community Boating Foundation, 13 Rochester Yacht Club A Message from the Club Manager Dear Members, I recently returned from the Club Managers Association’s National Conference held in Orlando FL. The Conference is a great way to acquire tools and data-driven resources that we can implement in our own Club. There were over 70 educational sessions offered that discussed today’s top issues which include downsizing, rising health care costs, compliance, talent management and more. I chose to focus on member value and member retention, which ties into a topic that our Club is also focusing on this year and is part of our long-range plan. While I was in Florida, I had the opportunity to enjoy the Southern Rendezvous and the company of those whom attended. I also enjoyed the warm sunny weather that Florida has to offer this time of year. Going to Captiva Island Yacht Club for lunch by boat was a very special treat and having Brunch with RYC members at Isles Yacht Club the following day was a great way to end my vacation. Thank you to all rendezvous-ers for a wonderful visit. Family centered vs. Family Friendly is a topic of discussion that peaked my interest. This really hits home as it is a key component in our Long Range Plan. In the past few years, clubs have realized, including our Club, that we need to be more than just Family Friendly, we need to be Family Centered. Being family friendly is no longer enough; and the terminology suggests that the Club tolerates kids, being Family Centered means that we engage our members in multigenerational events. Family Centered defined as; hosting a number of events that will happen simultaneously and will engage Grandma Grandpa along with Mom and Dad, Kids and Grandkids. Boating has a great advantage because it is a family sport, fun for all ages and you never out grow it. In addition to boating, RYC Members can enjoy the family events the Women’s Association hosts such as Breakfast with the Easter Bunny and the Kids Holiday Party. RYC’s Entertainment Committee hosts Harborfest, the Up the River Cruise and our Traditional Memorial Day. All of these events engage multi generations and are focused on having something for everyone. We continue to schedule family events at least once a month while looking for new ideas to engage Members of all ages. All in all, we focus on providing our Members with as many opportunities as possible to enjoy the Club and all that it has to offer. Each event gives our Members one more memorable experience and an opportunity to spend time with one another as an intricate part of the extended RYC family. Our upcoming Events for April are: April 1 – Happy Hour, featuring Great Lakes Beers and William Hill wines April 6 – Room to Breathe with Joani Hardy, 12 Simple Steps to Organize Your Life April 8 – Game Night with supervised play in the Children’s room for Kids of All Ages April 9 – Children’s Theater Presents “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie” April 10 – Family Pasta Dinner and BINGO, Orientation to Summer Swimming and Sailing Programs April 13 – America’s Cup Discussion w/ Hank Stuart and Laurent Esquire April 16 – Prime Rib Night April 21 – April Board Meeting, all Members welcome April 23 – Breakfast with the Easter Bunny April 24 – Easter Brunch, Chef George’s Spectacular Array Of Easter Favorites April 27 – Skipper’s Meeting with Fleet Captain Eric Voss April 27 – Ladies Night Out, All Ladies Welcome to Have a Cocktail and Join the Ladies Dinner Table April 29 – Wine Dinner, A Tour of France April 30 – Fool’s Regatta, Ideal 18’s 14 Around the Club Rochester Yacht Club How I’ve begun to Prepare for the Launch of My Sailing Career by Kristina Clabeaux On Sunday, March 20th I attended a WOW (Women On the Water) seminar in Mississauga, Ontario. I was 1 of 25 women to attend this particular seminar and if there was an award for who traveled the farthest, well I won it. The range of experience in the room went from me who has very minimal experience to women who have been power boating and sailing for years; some even had racing experience. Our teacher was Lori Mason, founder of Women On the Water and owner of “The Store” Mason’s Chandlery Ltd., located in the Port Credit Harbour Marina. WOW is a program designed to get women more comfortable on the water. As a current non-boater, I learned 9 things that I would need to know in an emergency: 1. Starting and stopping the engine 2. Putting the boat in forward, neutral, and reverse 3. How to drop an anchor 4. Sailors need to be able to take the sails down 5. Calling for help on the VHF 6. Reading the chart plotter to get your position and know where the MOB button is for man over board 7. Getting someone back on board 8. When and how to shoot a flare 9. Where the fire extinguishers, PFD’s and safety kits are Some of these seem pretty basic, but you’d be surprised how many women questioned the use of flares, types of flares, storage devices for them and disposal of them. This class taught me that there are 4 types of flares: Type A-Parachute, Type B-MultiStar, Type C-Hand-held, and Type D-Smoke (buoyant or handheld). I got to hold each type of flare, learn when and how to use each type, and to what distances each flare can be seen. As for PFD’s, I hadn’t realized that there was a difference between a PFD and a Life Jacket! I have come to the conclusion that I’d like to be stylish on the water so I will go with a PFD rather than a standard orange, red or yellow life jacket. We were able to compare PFD’s to Life Jackets and learn the differences in foams, materials and fits. I also learned about inflatable PFD’s, in fact I was asked to model one! With this demonstration I learned that you should blow them up manually and leave them overnight to make sure that there are no holes. Those who have inflatable PFD’s with an automatic inflator (automatic inflator causes the PFD to inflate the instant it is immersed in water) should store their life jackets in a dry place in the off season to avoid the accidental inflation of the PFD. Also, the salt tablet that detects the water should be changed once a year to avoid the dissolving of the tablet over time. The most exciting part of the seminar was a surprise visit by Diane Reid of One Girl’s Ocean Challenge. Ms. Reid runs her own business doing marine application upholstery while apprenticing a small craft marine surveyor completing repairs and installations on any boat one could imagine. Here is a look her track record: • • • • • • 1st in Division Bermuda Ocean Race – double handed 2010 Fastest Mini – 2010 Lake Ontario 300 15 years of national and international competition 3 World Championship campaigns 2008 and 2009 Lake Ontario single handed champ 15 years of provincial dinghy racing • 3000 miles of award winning, single handed racing Listening to Ms. Reid speak about her past adventures and what she is working towards was so amazing. Her next big race that she is working towards is the 2013 Mini Transat Race from France to Brazil; a total of 4400 Nautical Miles… single handed! She recently completed the one of the two qualifiers in the Bahamas which consisted of a 1000 Nautical Passage in a Mini 650 open class sailboat. In the summer of 2012, she will compete in the France Mini Racing Circuit which consists of 1000 nautical mile qualifying races. To learn more about Ms. Reid and her adventures visit http:// www.onegirlsoceanchallenge.com. My biggest challenge at the seminar, was knot tying. I can tie my shoes, and accidentally create a knot any time you ask or don’t ask me too… but this time I needed some one on one instruction. (See the photo) This was a great program to get me started, and I came home with quite the goodie bag! Ladies let me know what you think about a program like this at RYC … I have plenty to share from this seminar and I’m sure we could find some more experienced sailors who would jump on board!
