DISTRICT SNAPSHOT
Welcome to Southwestern Community Unit
School District #9, home of the Piasa Birds.
The majority of our students live in the towns
of Brighton, Medora, Piasa and Shipman
in Illinois’ Macoupin, Jersey and Greene
counties. Each is less than an hour from
St. Louis, Missouri and Edwardsville and
Springfield, Illinois. Our district consists of
five schools, which house more than 1,550
students in Pre-K through 12th grade.
Student success and school pride are both
longstanding traditions in the Southwestern
School District, traditions that continue
to this day. Our emphasis on hard work,
dedication, and community collaboration help
Southwestern students thrive in a safe and
quality school environment.

OUR STUDENTS
Our students have the benefit of a community-wide support system that recognizes their potential both
academically, and in a broad range of extracurricular activities. As a result, they can grow and mature into
well-rounded young adults.
The Southwestern School District offers a strong academic program — including Advanced Placement
(AP)/Honors, Early Start Program (LCCC) and Dual Credit (LCCC) courses that give students the opportunity to earn
enough credits to gain sophomore standing at many college and universities. The District’s fine arts courses are
among the best in the area, and the expansive extracurricular offerings allow students to reach their fullest potential.
More than 80% of our students go on to attend a university, community college or technical school after graduation.
