This year we had a tremendous response to the competition, with over 400 entries from across the school. The entries – on the themes of ‘Nature’, ‘Persecution’ and ‘Mirrors’ – were by turns funny, dark, sad, joyful, nostalgic and choosing which poems were to be selected for the shortlist was a difficult task. But select we had to do, and eventually we arrived at a list of poems which we then turned over to our judges. Like last year, there were four awards for both Primary and Secondary: the Head Teacher’s Award, chosen by Ms Thomas-Peter; the Poet’s Award, this year chosen by New York-based performance poet, Taalam Acey; the Student Choice Award, chosen by the student body of Bangkok Prep via an online voting system; and the World Languages Award, chosen by the World Languages teachers for the best poem written in a language other than English. After some long and difficult deliberation, the following students received awards: Primary Head Teacher’s Award: Angeline (Year 5JK) – “Mirrors” Poet’s Award and Student Choice Award: Isaac (Year 6NW) – “The Undesired” World Languages Award: Shunta (Year 6SC) – “海” / “Return to the Sea” Angeline (Year 5 student) Isaac (Year 6 student) Shunta (Year 6 student) Secondary Head Teacher’s Award: Kieran (Year 9JPD) – “The Monster in the Mirror” Poet’s Award: Lana (Year 13JM) – “i am never present. an observer” Student Choice Award: Pailin (Year 8DK) – “A Monster in the Mirror” World Languages Award: Teo (Year 11SR) – “Réchauffement Climatique” Kieran (Year 9 student) Lana (Year 13 student) Pailin (Year 8 student) Teo (Year 11 student) All awarding winning and shortlisted poems will be published in the upcoming 2nd Bangkok Prep Poetry Anthology. John Lockwood Secondary English Faculty Leader 2 Issue # 18, Friday, 29th January 2016 PREPazine Bangkok Prep 2016 Poetry Anthology – Shortlisted Poems The poem below is one of the poems shortlisted for the Bangkok Prep 2016 Poetry Anthology. The competition asked students to write a poem based on the themes of 'Mirrors', 'Nature' or 'Persecution'. The Poetry Anthology will be published during Book Week later this term. The Sound of Nature By Khowjow (Year 2 student) The rain howls in pain whilst thunder shrieks, The thunder can be heard on top of the peak. The wind whooshes loud while trees reach high, The sound of birds is from the sky. The sound of waves crashing loud, It seems like someone is listening to the sound. The sound of birds chirping, The sound of bears burping, Also, the sound of lions slurping, The sound of coconuts clanging, The sound of angry bees buzzing, The sound of growing from the peas, The sound of grazing sheep, The sound of tigers eating meat. Other carnivores join in the feast, And like nature, The nature of treasure. John Lockwood Secondary English Faculty Leader Chinese New Year Celebration Bangkok Prep will be celebrating Chinese New Year on Monday, 8th February at the main pitch and Undercroft area. For Year 1 to 9, the performances will begin at 7.45am. For children in the Foundation Stage, the performances will begin at 8.50am and end at 9.10am. All students are welcomed to dress up to celebrate Chinese New Year. We welcome all parents to join this wonderful celebration which promises to be an excellent display of Chinese culure. See you then! Shu-Fen Wang (Ivy) Mandarin Teacher Learning Support – working in partnership with parents Rising Above I.Q. – How the Readathon is a Key to Eradicating Poverty Dr. Nisbett, a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, argues that what we think of as intelligence is quite malleable and owes little or nothing to genetics. He further argues that perhaps success depends less on intellectual endowment than on perseverance and drive. As Professor Nisbett puts it, “Intelligence and academic achievement are very much under people’s control.” This is why supporting the Readathon is so important, as it is a decisive weapon against poverty. It offers an opportunity to ‘at risk house holds’ to have a chance to access books. This is because most of the poor are born into their situation and while transferring payment after payment is altruistic, it doesn’t really affect change. Whereas the Readathon inculcates independence and allows education, education and education. 3 PREPazine Issue # 18, Friday, 29th January 2016 Please help raise a childs I.Q. today and support the School’s Readathon by contributing a small payment that will fund a library for those individuals less fortunate and enable them to reach their potential. Dominic Proctor Head of Learning Support Readathon is on! Our students are reading full tilt! The school has come together and read more than 5,000 books, with Elmer the Elephant leading the lot. However, the race for first place swaps about twice a day as the numbers are so close. It's anyone's game, but everyone wins. Please encourage your child to read for the Readathon – for themselves and for our charities. Also, remember you can collect sponsors throughout the entire race! Even one book and one sponsor makes a difference. Thank you! Mia Livingston Head Teaching Librarian 4 Issue # 18, Friday, 29th January 2016 PREPazine UPCOMING EVENTS Open Morning Date: Thursday, 11th February Time: 8am – 10am Location: Bangkok Prep Bangkok Prep will host an Open Morning on Thursday 11th February at 8am with a presentation about our school where we will share our fantastic facilities and information about our curriculum. Springtime fun at Bangkok Prep’s Spring Fair Date: Saturday, 27th February Time: 2pm – 6pm Location: Bangkok Prep Entrance Fee: Free Admission Bangkok Prep’s Spring Fair is arguably one of the most attended family fair in the heart of Sukhumvit Road. Bangkok Prep’s Spring Fair is open to the whole community – so grab your family, friends, and neighbours for an exciting day of non-stop food, fun and friendship. 5 Issue # 18, Friday, 29th January 2016 PREPazine PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Dear Parents, As we come to the end of January, I have asked the children to reflect on the Value of the Month – Honesty. The importance of honesty should be recognised by all and fundamentally being true to ourselves is the very foundation of honesty. During Term 2, there are many planned enrichment trips and curricular residentials. These types of activities provide children with crucial independent skills that help to define them as unique individuals. Thank you for your continuing support in these events. It was great to meet the many parents that attended the Primary information sessions this week and this reflects the wonderful community spirit that we hold ‘so dear’ at Bangkok Prep. We wish the FOBISIA Swim Squad ‘Good Luck!’ as they are currently participating in the annual swim competition this weekend. School uniform It was unusually cool at the beginning of this week and I relaxed the uniform rules slightly because the outside temperature was below 21 degrees. The temperature has now returned to normal and the school uniform policy must be followed. Children must wear ‘school shoes’ with their school uniform. Please see examples of appropriate school shoes below: Boy's shoes Girl's shoes Please check the school uniform policy on page 23, 24 and 25 in the Parent Handbook. Many thanks for your support in this matter. Best wishes, Duncan Stonehouse Head of Primary Year 6 Solar Power Lesson On Tuesday 26th January, Year 6 had the privilege of hosting solar energy experts Mr Peter Sprenger and Mr Rolf Aeschbacher, from Kruthwong & Sprenger Ltd. The gentlemen gave a fantastic, high energy, presentation that really captured the imagination of the children and staff involved. The Year 6 students learned how to calculate energy usage, before having an opportunity to experiment with solar energy in a number of practical, hands on, activities. This linked in with the school wide ‘Eco Schools’ initiative and also complemented our current Year 6 theme, where we have been learning about global resources. 6 PREPazine Issue # 18, Friday, 29th January 2016 Everybody had a fantastic morning and the children learned a lot of very valuable skills. The most important message for all involved was that Science and Engineering must be fun in order to be innovative, and Tuesday morning was certainly that! On behalf of the Year 6 students and staff, we would like to extend our thanks to Mr Sprenger and Mr Aeschbacher. We look forward to working with them again in the future. Kris Leverton Year 6 Leader Highland Games 2016 The children participated fantastically well in the Foundation Stage Highland Games this year. The children all joined a Scottish clan and completed a variety of sporting activities; for example, Jumping Jock’s, Ben Nevis and Toss the Welly. Thank you to all the Year 6 students who helped – you were amazing. Thank you also to the Foundation Stage teachers and TA’s who led the clans. A final thanks to FOBP for providing the delicious shortbread. It was a braw day! Isla Gordon Foundation Stage PE Teacher TISAC Primary Arts Day On Friday 22nd January, a small, and extremely enthusiastic, group of Primary children attended the TISAC Primary Arts Day at St. Stephens International School Bangkok. The day rotated around a number of activities involving Thai traditional instruments, dance, drumming and crafts. All of the children who attended were divided into groups, so that all of the schools that attended were mixed together and the children were able to make some new friends. All of the activities were performance based and practical, offering exciting hands on opportunities for our students to explore new types of music. During the course of the day, the children developed many skills and had a lot of fun! Linda Owen Primary Music Teacher 7 Issue # 18, Friday, 29th January 2016 PREPazine SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWS Dear students, parents and colleagues, We can all argue about the most important invention in human history, but I hope you would agree when I suggest that the Gutenberg Press in 1440 (although it might have been from China or Korea) is probably in the Top 10. It accelerated the spread of ideas and brought us all closer together. We now see reading and writing as fundamental skills, and we at Bangkok Prep are celebrating reading over the next few weeks in our Readathon. Please use this as an opportunity to discuss with your child what they are reading, and more importantly what you are reading. Take a moment to think, are you acting as a good role model? Do your children see you read not only as a necessity but also for pleasure? I picked up all the books I’m reading at the moment (I love my Kindle!) and couldn’t believe I had five on the go! Each is giving me something different, but they are making me think afresh, reflect, imagine and in one case tearful. Thing Explainer - Randall Munroe Talk Like TED - Carmine Gallo The Chimp Paradox - Steve Peters I think you’ll find it’s a bit more complicated than that - Ben Goldacre Larger than Life - Jodi Picoult In our quest to bring the Primary and Secondary school sections closer together, we in Secondary are focusing on the same Bangkok Prep Life Value as Primary each month. January was honesty whilst February will be problem-solvers. Unfortunately, the actions of leaders at FIFA, IAAF, UTC and WTF have not given our students very good role models, although they have given us as teachers lots of material to work with. These leaders were meant to make our world a better place for its youth and have sorely disappointed us. I am confident that future leaders graduating from Bangkok Prep will not show such poor traits and behaviours. Our FOBISIA swimmers are currently en route to their annual competition and I hope that their dedication and training pay-off. Some medals would be lovely, but PBs (personal bests) for all would be far better and a great reward for Matt Ferrier and his coaching team. Good luck! Finally, have a warm weekend! Nigel Wilsonlock Acting Head of Secondary Year 10 Geography Trip Bangkok Prep's Year 10 Geography students spent the morning doing their IGCSE fieldwork in Thong Lo. They were investigating environmental quality, land use, traffic issues and analysing the reasons people shop at J Avenue. The students were working towards the skills required to be able to assess differing hypotheses and had spent 3-4 lessons in school discussing how they would do this. They will now spend some time analysing their results and importantly thinking about the problems and difficulties they had and how they could improve that sort of fieldwork in the future. I was delighted to see the students working hard and behaving impeccably, especially when interviewing members of the public. Josh Morris Geography Teacher and Head of Year 13 8 Issue # 18, Friday, 29th January 2016 PREPazine PE NEWS U9 Girls TISAC Football On Wednesday, 27th January, ten Under 9 Girls went to a football match: Bonus, Panpoon, Yumin, Prim, Coco, Lottie, Annisha, Katinn, Petch and Poey. We played against St. Andrew Sathorn International School. When it started, it was very exciting but sadly we lost by 0 and St. Andrews scored 3. At the end, both schools got in line and high fived every player. On the way back to school, we made up our song about the Bulldog. By Jidapond (Bonus) Year 4 student We started off by doing some stretches and then we got ready for the match against St. Andrews Sathorn International School. They played really well. After the match ended, we congratulated them because they won the match and went in the bus back to school and then we all went home. By Charlotte (Lottie) Year 3 student U11 Girls TISAC Football On Tuesday, 26th January the U11 Girls set off to their match at Arsenal Football Stadium against St. Andrews 71. The weather was really cool and we were all ready to go, unfortunately we didn’t win, but we all still had a spectacular time playing football. Special mention to Lanna (lady of the match!) and Joy who played strong defence and never let us down with their great tackling! Everyone had a fabulous time, thank you to Coach Ms Moreton and all the lovely parents who went and cheered us on! Luck isn’t on our side this time, but we will win the next match! By Pyncha Year 6 student 9 Issue # 18, Friday, 29th January 2016 PREPazine U11 Boys Football Resounding Victory! The U11 Boys began their league season with a resounding 3-0 victory over Ascot. They knew Ascot would be a tough team to beat based on last season's league table but they went into the game with a positive attitude and some fantastic support from fellow students. After a close first half in which both teams adopted a rather direct style, Bangkok Prep found themselves 1-0 up with a goal from Pawdee, brilliantly assisted by Shunta. Bangkok Prep found their stride in the second half and thanks to the goalkeeping of Isaac and a solid defensive display from Parky and captain Nadol, they never looked troubled. Artin came on to score a brilliant goal to make it 2-0. He showed great technique to bring the ball down on his chest and score on the turn. Pawdee's headed second goal made it 3-0 and sealed the victory. It was a solid display by every single one of the boys and we will now begin to focus on our next game against KIS in two weeks' time. Daniel O'Sullivan Football Coach FOBP NEWS Dear Parents, A Heartfelt Thank You The FOBP President for the past year and a half, Angelique Leijdekker, or Angie as she is fondly known has stepped down. The FOBP Committee would like to thank Angie for her dedication and enthusiastic leadership that helped foster the sense of community Bangkok Prep greatly cherishes. FOBP will always remember the positive changes she brought to the committee and will miss her innovative ideas and tireless energy. During her tenure, Angie did an outstanding job leading the FOBP into organising several amazing activities that brought the school, the children and the parents together seamlessly. Our job now is to build on this great relationship. Once again, a heartfelt Thank You, Angie. Funky Friday on Friday, 5th February from 2.00pm – 4.00pm Always popular with the children, this month’s Funky Friday will have a Valentine’s theme. As always there will be the ever-popular lemonade, plus snacks and other goodies for the kids to indulge in. Make sure to provide your children with a little cash to buy some of the nice refreshments. FOBP is always looking to involve more parents in events like this, so if you have the time and would like to volunteer please get in touch by emailing us at [email protected]. Spring Fair Lucky Draw Donations This year the Spring Fair is on Saturday, 27th February and as always FOBP will organise its popular lucky draw. We are asking parents for prize donations by way of gift baskets, gift items, vouchers, etc. This is a great way for the parents to promote their businesses within the school community. How FOBP Uses its funds: If you have ever wondered where the funds that FOBP raises go, wonder no more. A casual look around the school will reveal the involvement of FOBP in adding value to our children’s school experience. In the past, FOBP has donated the electronic scoreboard in the Sports Hall, Baht 100,000 to the Music department for instruments, outdoor coolers in the Undercroft area, trophy cabinets, helped the Drama department with lapel microphones, organised Teacher/ Staff Appreciation snacks and lunches, sponsored snacks for drama and musical productions, ice cream for the children during Sports Day and drinks during swim galas, raised funds for charitable organisations and helped with Foundation Stage events. This by no means a complete list. The FOBP Committee 10
