...to serve the community; cultivate knowledge; promote curiosity; and inspire lifelong learning...
Serving Westhampton Beach, Westhampton, East Moriches, Eastport, East Quogue, Manorville, Quiogue, Remsenburg and Speonk
A Conversation with Idea Place Manager Sonja Roese
It does not take long for you to enter the Idea Place and be
greeted with a warm smile by Idea Place Manager Sonja Roese.
She is starting her 10th year at Westhampton Free Library. “I
began as a part-time librarian for the summer and was able to
continue working evenings and weekends during the school
year. Once I retired from the East Quogue School District
after a 30 year career as a school library media specialist
(school librarian), I was given the opportunity to be a full-time
librarian here. I enjoy working with the staff and community
of Westhampton and our contract districts. The support for our
Library is tremendous,” she said.
For those who do not know or are new to the area, the
children’s room is branded as The Idea Place using the color
green as our identification. The woodwork and art work give
children the feeling of sophistication and importance. The
Idea Place is on the second floor which also gives children
the space they need. “We are fortunate to have lots of natural
light coming in through the windows and skylights as well as
beautiful sunset views. There is also a fun light feature over our
reference desk,” she said.
The Idea Place continues to expand. What was once a staff
of one full-time librarian and three part-time librarians has
grown to a fantastic team of three full-time and four part-time
librarians. “The Idea Place staff is always ready to help both parents and children
discover a love of reading and life-long learning. We offer numerous programs (over
160) and services and there is huge support for our summer reading club. The Idea
Place would not be the place it is without my entire staff,” she said.
Sonja is very proud of the programs the library offers. Some of these include: 1KB4K
— One Thousand Books Before Kindergarten, where families are asked to read
with their children daily which will increase their child’s vocabulary and enhance
their reading skills as the child ages. This is sponsored by the Friends of the Library
Literacy Project.
“The Trunk-or-Treat and the Pet Parade are my favorite additions to the children’s
program line-up. Families decorate their car trunks and the children trick-or-treat car
to car. The pets walk around the Village Gazebo and get introduced on the ‘cat walk.’
Trophies for all!” she said.
The one thing that is most satisfying at the library is to have an impact on someone’s
life. “I have been fortunate enough to have had students and patrons return to me and
reminisce about a particular story I read to them and they now share with their own
children,” Sonja concluded.
Westhampton Free Library Friends Support Literacy
The Friends of the Westhampton Free
Library held its second annual Library
Literacy Project Reception on Saturday,
August 1. Over 150 people attended the
reception. The Literacy Outreach Program
at Westhampton Free Library encompasses
four forms of literacy, Digital, Financial,
Early Childhood and Adult Literacy. Monies raised
from the reception will help to continue to fund this program designed to
encourage lifelong learning. Watch for exciting programs to come throughout the
upcoming year.

It’s a great way for our community members to get involved with our literacy project.

There’s No Quitting In This Game
by Madison DeFelice
Max Beren’s Poem
by Max Beren
Sports Poem
by Delaney Variale
I see the ball fly high,
Fly high into the sky.
It looks like a homerun,
So the person who hit is having fun.
I’m eager to play
The pitcher is ready
My bat swings away
I hit the ball
The pitcher tries to catch me
But I am faster
Than a one-eyed thug!
I run to second base
Better than a baboon.
I am safe.
I run when the next batter’s up
….and…
SCORE!!!
---And then I woke up.
The ball is in my hand.
I’m aiming at the catcher.
The umpire says, “Strike1.”
I pitch again;
the ball twirls, “Clink”
The ball hits the bat.
It comes toward me,
I catch it,
Throw it towards first base.
“Out!” The umpire says
I go behind the fence,
The coach says,
“Good job.”
I say
“I do what I can do.”
It wasn’t a homerun,
So he turned from fun to glum.
The boy on the sidelines said, “It’s ok”,
You did great anyway.
I said ok and moved on with my day,
But the other boy was not ok.
He screamed and shouted like no one was here,
Ah ah ah that hurt my ear.
We went over to him and asked,
Can I have the ball, pass pass pass?
He said no I’ll fail at that too,
We will cheer for you woo woo woo!
You’re right I need to have sportsmanship,
But before you say anything, here’s a tip.
Don’t be a sore loser.
You’re right, Thanks friends!
Congratulations!

Friends of The Westhampton Free Library. Contributions by the Friends to the
Library are crucial.
“Our Library would not be the special place it is without the contributions of our
Friends organization,” said Library Director Danielle Waskiewicz. “I think most
patrons would be surprised to learn how many of the services and programs they
enjoy are supported by the Friends.”
