Rich Media ads are not just Flash ads. Rich media ads
normally have interaction that involves more than one click,
and contain multiple complex parts such as video,
interactivity and animation. They may be part of a larger
campaign, like the wallpaper in the takeover package. The
Video Walkout is a good example of rich media. Formats
accepted depends on the type of rich media ad, and can also
be sent as ad tags.

They can be saved as .jpg, .png or .gif. Flash ads are not
allowed, as Adobe has ended support for the mobile version
of Flash Player.

General Guidelines
Animation – SMI restricts all animation, even subtle movement,
to a limit of 15 seconds.
Audio - Audio must be user-initiated.
Borders - Ads must clearly be differentiated from page content through either a
defined linear or graphical border, a solid contrasting background color or a
combination of border and contrasting background. A 1px border in #CCCCCC or
#666666 is preferred.
File Size Issues - The client/agency ad kit includes file prep instructions to meet
file size requirements. If your client is having issues reaching these limits, we
recommend you have them send us their working files so we can save their ads at
the correct requirements while keeping content as crisp as possible. We can
provide a proof once this is done.
File Types - SMI accepts the following file types for advertising: .fla, .swf, .jpg, .gif
and spot ad tags.
Flash Advertising - Flash ads not sent as 3rd party tags must follow the file prep
instructions included in the client/agency kit.
Pop-Up Window Advertising - Pop-up window advertising is not permitted. The
browser back button must work from the landing page.
Rich Media Ads - Rich media ads not sent as 3rd party tags must follow the file
prep instructions in the client/agency kit.
Third Party Name and Logo Usage - Use of a third party’s trademarked name,
slogan or logo is prohibited without written permission from said third party (For
instance, using a pro or college sports team’s name or logo to promote the client’s
business).
Video - Preferred formats, resolution and file prep information are in the client/
agency kit.
Retargeting Ad Specs
File Size: Max file size is 40K
Ad Sizes: SMI offers 27 different ad sizes. Our most popular requests are for sizes
300x250, 728x90, 160x600, 120x600.
The other sizes available are: 88x31, 120x60, 120x90, 120x160, 120x240, 120x600,
125x125,160x90, 160x600, 180x90, 180x150, 200x90, 200x200, 234x60, 240x400,
250x250, 300x100, 300x250, 300x600, 300x850, 336x280, 450x50, 468x15, 468x60,
468x728, 728x15, 728x90, 100x72 (Facebook).
Animated Ads:
- SMI recommends a maximum of 18 frames per second.
- SMI recommends a maximum animation length of
30 seconds with no more than two loops.
Flash Ads: Publish to the earliest version of Flash possible for maximum
penetration. (SMI recommends Flash 8 or even Flash 6 if you can render the ads
without losing quality).
Clicktags: Clicktags should be set up in the following format: clickTag

- Ads serving within an IFrame should open in a new window when clicked.

Tip: Please only implement one clicktag in each swf file as our platform does not support

Advanced/HTML Ads:HTML/Advanced tags require macros. Please insert the following
macros as needed:

Used for click tracking. Insert directly before the click through URL. Use the escaped
version if passing the click tag as part of a URL.

A random number generated with each impression to stay out of the cache.

Used to get the keyword that was used for targeting the impression. Use the escaped
version if passing this macro as part of a URL.
