John Lyncheski
Dear Fellow Members,
Many of you have noticed and
commented upon the bronze
statue of a golfer now adorning the entry area to our golf
complex next to the bag drop.
Others have commented on the
new area rug in the Clubhouse
foyer. Both of these were generously contributed by Club
members. Our thanks to Bob
Weinbach for the statue, which
makes a great first impression
on those arriving at Quail Creek

Country Club. We also want to
thank Jim and Sharon Rupp for
the area rug that now captures
your attention as you enter our
Clubhouse. Commissioned by
Julie Dasher Rugs, the Rupp’s
daughter, the rug was handmade
with Tibetan wool in Nepal. To
view a video of the process for
making one of these rugs, go to
www.juliedasherrugs.com. We
are fortunate to have members
who think so highly of our Club.
I am pleased to announce
the Officers of the Club for the
upcoming year. Bob Magrann,
returning as a Director, has been
elected to serve as President of
the Club. Dan Monaco has been
elected as Vice President. Stu
Hodgson will be the Treasurer
and Bill Senter will be Secretary.
Please join with me in welcoming and congratulating your
incoming Officers. They will
represent you well. Please make
every effort to attend our Annual
Meeting, scheduled for March
25 at 10:00 am. Be sure to take
the time to mark and return
your proxy in advance of the
meeting. This year, more than
ever, it is important for you to
exercise your right to vote and
to express your views to your
fellow members and the Board
of Directors.
Finally, I would like to thank
you for the opportunity to have
served as your President for the
past year. In some respects, this
past year has been challenging,
but, in many other aspects, it has
been nothing short of enjoyable.
I have particularly welcomed
the opportunity to communicate
with you, our members, on
matters of importance to the
Club. Please continue to support your Board and Officers
in the upcoming year. Times
are tough for private clubs in
Southwest Florida and we’re
all in this together. Quail Creek
has much to offer to us and to
our future members. We need to
maintain our wonderful culture
and preserve the premier Club
that we now enjoy.

Through Thick & Thin
As we approach season’s end,
our Club is in full swing. We want
you to know that we continue
to do our best to keep it that
way. While the Membership
Committee is committed to increasing membership levels,
recruitment continues to be
challenging. We continue to use
The Naples Daily News, Florida
Weekly, The Pelican Bay Post, Life
In Naples, a new local magazine
and selected television spots to
tell our story. Increasingly, we
are finding that prospective new
members are finding us on the
web. This is leading us to expand
our use of social media and webbased initiatives. And, while I am
speaking of the World Wide Web,
I want to remind everyone that
wireless connection is available
throughout the Club, including
the renovated pool area. Try us
out.
At this, the mid-point of the
Club’s fiscal year, I like to review
our financial position. I am happy
to report that our revenue stream
continues to follow the budget
I know I’m beginning to
sound like a broken record….
I’m told, in marketing you must
keep repeating and repeating,
so it sticks like the last song
you hear and you hum it all day
long. Members bring in members
and we need members. It is that
simple. With all our marketing
tools, what pops out the most on
the application is, “How did you
hear about Quail Creek?” They
always say, “from a friend who
is a member.”
Many people coming to
Florida to retire and play golf
are taken in by the developers
who offer homes and condos
in bundled communities. This
always sounds like a great idea
until the season gets into full
swing. This is when they find out
how hard it is to get a tee-time in
their golf-included community.
Quail Creek is one of the
very few private country clubs
in Naples with two 18-hole golf

Director

forecasts. We continue to closely
monitor our overhead expenses.
As a result, I believe that the Club
will end another year with a small
net surplus.
We have a Club of which
we are proud. One of the ways
we strive to keep it this way is
to adopt rules and guidelines.
I would like to remind you of
several which we need everyone’s help in enforcing. One of
those most abused involves attire.
Most often, this infraction occurs
when family and guests arrive at
the Club dressed inappropriately.
You, our members, understand
that wearing inappropriate shorts,
cargo shorts and tee-shirts into
the dining room and men and
boys playing golf in cargo shorts
or wearing shirts untucked or
keeping a cap on in the dining
areas are all infractions of our
rules. Please remind your visitors
of our dress code policy. We do
not want to embarrass anyone.
Another area of concern involves
driving golf carts into restricted
areas. This causes unnecessary
stress on the grass, especially at
this time of year when the grass
does not grow as fast. So, unless
you have a disability, please
respect all golf course markers. Remember, we are a Club,
together through thick and thin!

courses where we can guarantee
our members a tee-time. Right
now we are in prime season for
our northern members and their
friends who come to visit Naples
for the warm weather, sunshine
and golf. We ask you to bring
your northern friends to Quail
Creek and expose them to what
we offer as a full service coun-
try club. Quail Creek Country
Club has a variety of activities
along with a number of diverse
categories of membership to fit
everyone needs and budget.
Once we get people into the
Clubhouse, they can sense the
value of what our Club offers.
That one step inside can open
up a new and exciting lifestyle!

MGA News
The weather has been great! The golf competition wonderful! The
camaraderie spectacular!
Bob Weidner, Chairman of the January 5, 2013 MGA New Year
Opening Day Tournament, reports that 55 players competed in the
special ABCD computer-paired, 40-ball tournament, which was a
very well received format. Chairman Tom Benua, with the help of
Terry Sullivan, conducted a highly successful January 18-19 Member/
Member Tournament with 88 players competing. The overall blue
tee champions were Paul Dell Uomo and Bob Ricketts. The overall
green tee champions were Wayne Selvig and Bill Stalsworth.
Last year the MGA Board of Directors established a special "shoot
your age" award in memory of Joe Doucette who, over his years at
Quail Creek, won virtually every men's tournament at least once and
shot his age multiple times. Mike Dero and Bill Westrick formally
introduced the award at the Member/Member awards luncheon and
pointed out that since its establishment and following Joe Doucette's
lead: Jim Collins, Phil Campbell, Ray Eshelman and Charlie Rogers
have "shot their age." While Joe's wife, Lou, couldn't make the
dedication, a picture was sent to her to help capture the special
dedication to Joe.
Bill Westrick reported a highly successful Ryder Cup on February
20-23. The Ryder Cup has become the most popular men's event
at Quail Creek with 117 players competing. The February 18 team
dinner with spouses featured a bag piper and a parade of flags led
by last year's winning USA team co-captains, Nick Kallergis and Bill
Nicholl. They were followed by the co-captains carrying their flags
representing the six countries participating in the Ryder Cup.
Plans are in place for the 30th Annual Men's Invitational to be held
March 21-23. This is Quail Creek's men's signature event attracting
guests from all over the country. The tournament features excellent
golf competition and spectacular dining including a couples award
dinner with live music for dancing.
The MGA membership continues to grow. We now have 250
members. If you haven't yet joined, please contact Tom Benua at:
[email protected] or call 566-3029.
Lady Niners News
Over 100 ladies from area clubs enjoyed a nine hole round of
golf on the Quail Course on Monday, February 11. Our club looked
magnificent and the 37 Lady Niners who hosted the foursomes did an
outstanding job. Kudos to Carol Baker for organizing the event and
making a wonderful "Go Red" day to promote awareness of heart
disease and the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women."
The Divas Classic was held on February 25 and 28 and the results
have been posted. Millie Perri ran this event and a wonderful time
was had by all.
Our future events include the Directors Cup on March 4, organized by Mimi White; a Twilite Mixed Member/Guest on Saturday,
March 9 with the theme of "The Best of Times" including a gourmet
dinner is being chaired by Elaine Christian and Charlotte Wiseman;
the Niners Championship will be held on March 11, 14 and 17 and
is managed by Mike Dero; the Annual Meeting and Luncheon on
March 18 organized by Anne Genovese; and finally, Closing Day
and Awards will be held on April 22 chaired by Marie Lacy. Make
sure you consult the golf calendar on the Club website and sign up
for these great events.
On the other Mondays, there is always a fun game, so sign up for
those too! Don't forget the Clinics run by Jerry Garner, which occur
after lunch and golf on the first Monday of each month.

WGA 18 Hole News
Fun-filled events and wonderful weather combined for
one of WGA’s most successful
seasons. Rita Kozic, Kathleen
Scancarella and Ann Morin
got us started with the January
Member/Guest, followed
the next week with the fully
subscribed Member/Member,
hosted by Diana Horn and
Dossie Schoeler. February was
ushered in by the traditional
Presidents Cup. Sixteen former
WGA presidents joined the
festivities chaired admirably by
Jennifer Carney, a past WGA
president and Dossie Schoeler.
The amazing Terri Wegman
and her committee outdid
themselves with the Mardi
Gras Carnivale, our two-day
Invitational in February. These
events and more provide the
spirit of camaraderie for which
QCCC is famous.
The March and April events
begin with the Nancy Dee
Spring Charity Day on March
6, followed by our Women’s
Club Championship on March
12, 13 and 17, the ever-popular
Queen’s Classic on March 26
and 27, Triple Crown on April
3 and Closing Day on April 10.
Remember there is a 116-player
limit for all WGA events. If you
haven’t signed up already, sign
up now so that you don’t miss out
on a thing.
With more and more golfers
participating, we want to remind
everyone how important “pace of
play” is to everyone’s enjoyment
of the game. Your WGA board
has been focusing on this and
has adopted the following policy:
“Any group who allows more than
one open hole in front of them
will be asked to pick up their
pace of play by the ranger. In the
event a group is waiting behind
them, they will be asked to step
aside and let that group play
through immediately.” There are
tips on how to speed up pace of
play available on the Quail Creek
website, both in written suggestions and in a video. To view the
video, login to the member-only
section of the website and click on
the Golf tab. The video is located
in the center of the “page.” We
From the
Green
Dave Fenton
One of the most important
agronomic cultural practices
available to today’s golf course
superintendents is the topdressing of putting greens with sand.
Sand is needed to improve both
golf course playability and turf
health.
Bermuda grass produces a
network of stems that inter-
6
mingle to form a layer of thatch
in the upper root zone. Some
thatch is beneficial because it
provides surface resiliency, but
excessive thatch softens putting
greens, increases the incidence
of mower scalping and disease,
and decreases surface smoothness. Sand topdressing improves
surface firmness and smoothness,
dilutes thatch, and protects turfgrass growing points (or crowns).
hope that this will allow all of
us to finish in a timely manner.
It is hard to believe, but
planning for the 2013-2014
season is underway. This
year Ann Monaco (Chair),
Gail DeFrancesca and Marcia
Raniere are serving on the
WGA’s Nominating Committee.
It is their responsibility to nominate next year’s WGA Secretary.
Please contact any member of
the committee if you have a
suggestion for this important
position. The nominee will
be named and the slate voted
on during the April 10 Annual
Meeting which takes place after
the Closing Day festivities. At
the same meeting, you will
be asked to vote on a revision
to the WGA Bylaws. These
changes will be available for
viewing and discussion prior to
the Annual Meeting. If you have
a question, please contact any
member of your WGA board.
We thank you, our members,
for your support. You are the
secret ingredient in our recipe
for success.
The amount and frequency of
sand topdressing is dictated by
soil temperature and how active
the turf grows at any particular
time.
Sand topdressing is not a
new practice, having been
used by Old Tom Morris at St.
Andrews. We have increased
the amount of top dressing at
Quail Creek this season and it
has directly contributed to the
increased green speed we have
experienced this winter. Some
golfers believe that it disrupts
playing conditions, when in
fact it improves playability.
Educating golfers is a continual,
yet worthwhile, endeavor to decrease frustration for all parties.
See you on the golf courses!

the American Cancer Society.
Donations will gladly be accepted in the Fitness Center until

What’s On the Web
It is a digital world with changes coming so rapidly
that only someone around the age of 10 can possibly
keep up. This presents a challenge for the rest of us,
but also an opportunity. Quail Creek Country Club
is fortunate in that we have one of the most robust
country club websites in southwest Florida. We have
evolved from an informational website to one that
allows us to make reservations for dining, golf and
special events. We can even view all the reservations
we have made using the “View My Reservations”
option in the Reservation Center listing. Over the
next few months, we will be adding the Tennis
Reservation System.
More than ever, now is the time for you to become
comfortable with what we offer and learn how to
make this digital technology work for YOU. We are
considering offering small group tutorials and/or
programs such as Computers and Cocktails where
we will have some of our experts (both members
and staff) walk you through the website. If you
have any interest in this, let us know by email to
[email protected] or by a phone call
to the receptionist.
What is our next step? We are learning that Search
Engine Optimization (SEO) is where we must put our
emphasis if we are to succeed in digital marketing. We
are working to enhance the public side of the website
and have already put considerable time into making
sure that we have identified the “keywords” that will
bring QCCC’s listing up to the front of the line when,
for example someone searches for “country clubs in
Naples.” And, we are learning that our results will be
enhanced considerably if we start to use programs such
as Google’s Adwords for digital advertising and placement and if we nurture and develop our Facebook
page. (Yes, we have one, but it is currently inactive.)
As we continue to expand our horizons in this
digital universe, we encourage you to consult with
your grandchild and perhaps he/she can move your
digital comfort level up a notch. Or, allow us to help
you. Whichever direction you take, know that we are
here for you and are cheering you on.
