THE WILDKAT
No varsity contests were schedule yesterday.
Kokomo and Western will play a boys basketball game at Memorial Gym tonight. The JV tipoff
is slated for 6:00 p.m.
The game was originally scheduled as the season opener for both teams back in November, but
had to be rescheduled due to Kokomo’s success in football.
The Panthers are 1-9 this season and are in the midst of a four-game losing streak.
Western’s only win this season came in overtime on December 19th against Frankfort, 64-62.
Both Kokomo’s and Western’s last loss came against Logansport. The Berries beat Kokomo 9180 on Friday and disposed of Western 54-31 on Saturday.
The Kats and Panthers share two other common opponents besides Logan. Both have defeated
Frankfort, and both have lost to McCutcheon.
Western’s 2015-16 schedule includes all five teams from the North Central Conference West
Division.
Tonight’s game will be the 66th meeting in the series with Kokomo having won 58 to Western’s
seven.
The last time Western defeated Kokomo at Memorial Gym was November 26, 2003. The final
score was 77-74 in double overtime. Coach Andy Weaver’s Panthers finished 23-3 that season.
The first meeting between Kokomo and Western came in the 1949sectional when the Wildkats
were victorious 47-38. They would not play again until the 1957 sectional.
The first time Kokomo and Western played a regular season contest was the opening game of the
1972-73 season. The Wildkats won that game 82-49.
Last year’s Panther win broke a string of nine straight Kokomo victories.
Bart Miller is 42-36 in four seasons as the head coach of the Western Panthers. He spent 14
seasons as an assistant at Western under former coach Andy Weaver. A graduate of Western
and a one-time three-point record holder, Miller is 1-3 in games against the Wildkats and 0-2 in
games against the Kats at Memorial Gym. Miller suffered a heart attack earlier this season, just
prior to Western’s season opening game with McCutcheon.
The Sagarin Ratings have Kokomo as the 76th best team in the state and Western as the 292nd.
Western’s offensive average is 44.2, and the Panthers give up 63.4 points per game.
Comparatively, Kokomo’s numbers are 65.4 and 64.7, respectively.
