Just what does this mean, especially as we have a wellfunctioning Board of Directors and we are also paying management (namely FirstService Residential) to keep our property values high and our community looking beautiful. It means a cooperative effort between management, the Board of Directors, committee chairs and all those committee volunteers who attend meetings monthly to help with the process along the way. What makes a strong community leader? I have five answers, and you only need one of these to qualify as a potential volunteer – a true community leader to help manage the village. 1. Passion – Many of those that serve on a committee are passionate about their community and the committee. They come in with enthusiasm and a desire to help, but they just do not want to make the commitment to serve in a board position and feel the pressure of attending educational classes, so they opt for the committee instead. 2. Knowledge – Many of those serving on a committee have a wealth of knowledge that they can bring to that committee. Perhaps, they were in the landscape business and served on the property and grounds committee; or maybe they were a banker and have a wealth of knowledge about investments, budgets and keeping assessments stable. Perhaps, none of continues on page 21 4 - June 2016 F ASSOCIATION NEWS Dear Residents: They say June is the first month for a new growing season. We till the soil; we plant the seeds; and then we sit back and hope, while Mother Nature does the rest. From our flowers out front to our gardens and lawns, summer is a time when we expect and see many changes. Our lives often assimilate change much like the seasons. It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that June’s issue of The Breeze will be my final publication. As many of you know, I came to you from an entertainment background. Over the years that I have been with you at Sun City Aliante, I have tried to continue producing shows, not only for our residents, but also for charity and other theater groups. WWWWWW. .S SC CA AL LN NL LV V. .C CO OMM - - T TH HE E B BR RE EE EZ ZE E Over the past couple of years, I have worked with two gals in Los Angeles to produce a show that landed on the Sunset Strip in 2014. I also secured a contract for the show at the Tropicana Las Vegas. During my last trip to LA, the girls offered me a producing partnership in a new company that they were forming. I have accepted. My heart is heavy and my mind is torn about leaving. I have met and become fond of so many of the wonderful residents at Sun City Aliante. I have laughed with you and cried for you, as you have for me and my own. I shall never forget how you took me in and made me a part of your family. It has been an honor and a privilege to work for you over the past six years. Also, I can’t say enough about our incredible the Board of Directors. It has been a pleasure to work with them all over the years. Your current President, Warren Geller, is an esteemed individual. I have also cherished my incredible staff. My assistant, Trish Williamson, has worked hand-in-hand with me on The Breeze ;and together, we dressed tables in time to produce fun-filled events for the community. Lori, Carol, Elaine, Irene, Jan, Fran and Pat, I will miss our giggles and time together. You are the ambassadors of SCAL, and you make us proud. Virginia, Juan, Cathie, Sharon, Angel, Jose, Miguel and Adrian – we are a family of friends. Arnie, you are a treasure! You are revered by all and have taught me many a lesson that I will value and rely on during my journey. As seasons change, so does life. During the next few months, I will be working harder than ever before to create a successful production (Cherry Boom Boom) that I hope you will come and appreciate with me. My harvest will be the happiness that I can bring to others through our creativity. We have compiled an awardwinning team of which I am proud. It’s going to be sexy; and it’s going to be rock ‘n’ roll. If there is anything you should know about me by now, expect the unexpected for we are going to rewrite some new genre expectations. We never get older, just better! I won’t be a stranger, and I look forward to seeing you now and then. Enjoy your community, say thanks to all the hard workers who provide so much and make it seem so effortless for the community. I personally want to thank you all again for all of your kindness and support through the years. Love you all. You are in my heart always. Lynn Garlock-Wright Activities & Fitness Director June 2016 - 5 ASSOCIATION NEWS COMMUNITY STANDARDS Are you thinking about sprucing up the outside of your home with a new coat of paint? Just stop by the Customer Service Office and sign out a new and improved paint book. We have a total of 10 color schemes in this community. If you plan to paint your home the same color, no approval is needed; however, if you are thinking about changing the color, you will need to fill out an ARC application for approval. Don’t forget to check your wrought iron fencing, which is painted Aliante Grey Beige and shall be maintained in accordance with good maintenance practices to avoid the appearance of rust. We have the approved special color formula on file for fencing; if you need a copy, just ask. The results are in! On May 11, a total of 662 ballots were counted and four seats were filled on the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors for two-year terms. Congratulations to Judith Hanson and Mark Smith on their re-election for a two-year term to the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors and congratulations to Harry Reinhart and Mark Towers for their first two-year term on the Board. The Board of Directors for 2016-2017 is listed below: President Warren Geller Vice President Secretary Mark Smith Wayne Headrick Treasurer Betty Kramer W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M - T H E B R E E Z E It’s almost summertime in Sun City Aliante, and you should make sure the drip system in your yard is in tip-top shape in preparation for the hot weather. A drip irrigation system won’t be effective or efficient without correct water pressure and tubing length. It’s important to understand how many emitters a system can support, proper spacing and if you can combine different types. A stopped line or plugged emitter can shut down a drip irrigation system. Flush the lines to clear debris after installation and before you begin using the system in the spring. Flush the system and clean filters regularly, especially if your water supply contains a lot of minerals. SCAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION Motion sensing security light fixtures are very popular and can greatly improve safety and visibility around your home. The security light can be either a single or double light fixture with recommended 75 to 100 watt bulbs. The light fixture will be adjusted so it does not detect motion outside the perimeter of one’s property. It’s always recommended to get approval before you purchase; just bring in a picture of the fixture and tell us the wattage you plan to use and the color of the fixture. Remember no black fixtures, but bronze is acceptable. Remember that we are happy to help with the application. Time to replace your flag? If you are flying a flag that is faded, torn or tattered, then the answer is “yes;” you will need to replace it. Please remember trash cans should not be placed at the curb earlier than 6 p.m. on Monday night, and then taken off the street and put away no later than 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Turn in ARC applications by the end of business day on the Wednesday prior to the ARC meeting. This will allow time for all of the applications to go to the ARC Review Session and for homeowners to provide any additional information necessary for the ARC committee to make decisions. All applications turned in after the cut off time will be submitted to the next ARC meeting. The ARC has two meetings a month for your convenience, so you will be able to get your project started in no time. Once your application is approved you will have 90 days to complete the project and, at that time, your project will be inspected by the committee. If you just have questions, we invite you to stop by the ARC Review Session that is scheduled the Thursday prior to each ARC meeting when the committee is available to answer your questions about projects that you are thinking about doing. ARC meetings for this month are June 10 and June 24. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH The Sun City Aliante Neighborhood Watch program consists of a Coordinator (myself) and more than 50 Block Captains, your neighbors who have volunteered to be the “eyes and ears” of our community. Now that you know what Neighborhood Watch is about; perhaps, you’d like to become a member. We always need more Block Captains and Volunteers to patrol. If you are interested, please call me. Jim Blossey Neighborhood Watch Block Captain Coordinator 775-530-5119 [email protected] You Can Still Protect Your Assets Your accumulated assets are subject to a lot of different risks during your retirement years. So, you have to protect these assets. Some people do a good job of protecting against market downturns, increasing tax rates and many other risks. Unfortunately though, many people don’t believe they can anymore or fail to protect their assets against one of the biggest risks which is a long-term care illness. This can be a major problem, especially after looking at these common statistics from various sources including longtermcare.org: • Today, someone turning age 65 has almost a 70% chance of needing some type of long-term care service and support in their remaining years. • The average nursing home stay is 2.44 years or 892 days. • The median annual rate of a semi-private room in a nursing home is now $77,380. • On average, long-term care costs are increasing by more than 10% each year. When you add all that up, it is not surprising that a long term care illness, which is not covered by Medicare or private health insurance, very well could severely hurt or wipe out many people’s assets very quickly. Additionally, with older Americans entering assisted living facilities at an unprecedented pace, it is clear that they will incur more long-term care costs throughout their lifetimes. So what can you do? Fortunately, there are several options. Feel free to reach out to us to learn of the many different ways to protect your assets from a likely long-term care illness. We can be reached at 702-462-7233 or via email at [email protected] Also attend our educational lunch & learn events held monthly in the SCAL community center, or visit our website at www.askadamgoodman.com to learn more about challenges and solutions for today’s retirees, as well as our experience and services. If there is no car in the garage and the garage door is open, it is an open target for a burglar. If we cannot locate you, we may have to call the police to check your home to see if it has already been burglarized. Please, take a minute to be sure your garage door is shut before you drive off, whether you’re just going to the market or on a trip. www.AskAdamGoodman.com T H E Several years ago Neighborhood Watch started a volunteer patrol program. It was an extension of Sun City Aliante Neighborhood Watch. With this very successful tool, we brought Neighborhood Watch to the whole community. Our patrol program is made up of approximately 25 to 30 Block Captains and approximately 20 Volunteers. To become a Block Captain, you must pass a background check and be fingerprinted. Recently, we asked our volunteers to also undergo a background check. This just assures that they are held to the same standards as Block Captains. The patrol is out on the streets most days from 7 a.m.to midnight. We are not looking for HOA compliance issues as this is not our job. Our job is to look out for your safety. Wealth Optimization & Protection Strategist - The success of Neighborhood Watch depends on neighbors who are alert and communicate with each other. Block Captains support the Coordinator by communicating with approximately 15-20 homes in their immediate area. It is their duty to keep in contact by email, phone or in person to alert them of things going on in the community. They might also look after your home if you go away for a short time. Basically, it’s just being a good neighbor. Fifty (50) Block Captains may sound like a lot; but when you consider we have more than 2,000 homes in Sun City Aliante, you realize many homes are without a Block Captain. ADAM GOODMAN W W W . I look forward to playing this game with her and my wife for many decades to come (good lord willing). It is amazing to think about the bond that this game creates within participants. Sons, daughters, moms, dads, grandparents and friends all bonded together for a few hours trying to get a silly little ball into a hole. Can you imagine trying to explain this game to someone who had never seen or heard of it? “Ok, so you have this ball that is about an inch and a half wide, and you stand about 400 yards away from a hole in the ground that is about four and a half inches wide; and you hit the ball until you make it in the hole.” This would seem like such insanity, and it can be, but what a strong bond it creates between participants who persevere and keep playing. When it comes to your to-do list, put your future first. I see parents and grandparents bringing their kids and grandkids to the course every day and the kids have no idea how awesome and lasting those memories will be. We all have our early memories of this game. My wife remembers her grandpa teaching her to putt, and watching Arnold Palmer with him on the old “rabbit ears.” Later, it was her dad taking her to the driving range, when she was in high school and Watson and Nicklaus on the tube. Now she is married to a “PGA monkey,” and it’s Speith on the flat screen. In honor of Father’s Day, thank you to all the grandpas, fathers and new dads who continue sharing the love of the game with the next generation. Be grateful, be present and be fun. I look forward to seeing you on the practice tee at Aliante Golf Club, and I look forward to helping you improve your skills and your enjoyment of the game. This is our club, our community and I’m glad to be a part of it, Paul At The Club: We’ve had a blast at the golf clinic (open to all abilities) Mondays at 8:30 a.m. ($20 per golfer) for 45 minutes of group instruction, which is limited to eight students per session. But others, Leon felt, were coming with heavy hearts, questioning their lives and searching for answers. At the height of his pop career with Santana, Leon left the group with a burning desire to satisfy those hungering hearts with music that would make a difference in their lives. After leaving Santana, he launched a solo career with Word Records and became a one-man-band, where he put together a dazzling, computerized show. He released a string of successful albums and performed in different arenas and coliseums all over the world, and he had his own television show on TBN called “Leon and Friends.” Leon sees himself as an encourager—a vessel chosen, to bring joy into the hearts of many people. His concerts are always filled with excitement, humor and inspirational teaching. He crosses all age groups and ethnic boundaries and is a total performer who can sing, dance and motivate. For many years, he has used his voice, motivating gifts and music for concerts, radio and TV hosting, and he has had amazing success and visibility with gold and platinum albums. From 1999-2011, Leon travelled with Get Motivated Seminars where he performed on stage with such personalities as Zig Ziglar, Mayor Giuliani, Laura Bush, Colin Powell and other notable speakers. In 2012, Leon moved to Las Vegas and started a youth foundation called S.I.N.G. – Sowing Into Next Generation, whose goal is to bring positive inspiration to a mostly negatively influenced age group. An eye for detail – The committee members look at the bids to determine that the bidders were following the Request For Proposal (RFP) to a “T.” Safety has always been a big concern for our residents and our Board of Directors. It is not only safety from fast moving vehicles, but safety at home, and here I go, preaching to the choir once again….close those garage doors. No one in the community wants to see your trash and/ or your possessions. We have a fantastic Neighborhood Watch Program with block captains who are informed about changes to vehicle laws and have the ear of the police department and the City of North Las Vegas. Normally meetings are once a month and can last from 30 minutes to two hours. We try to limit all of our meetings to one hour, but there are times, this rule gets broken. Have I wet your appetite to get involved? If so, I look forward to seeing you submit that all-important application to become a member of a committee. I also look forward to seeing you at one of our next board meetings. Remember, board meetings are in the Vista Room at 7 p.m. sharp the second Wednesday of each month except in December. Judith Hanson, Director, SCAL Board of Directors T H E 4. Time to study and preparation – Committees have the advantage of studying each bid that comes in for a specified project. The Board, on the other hand, does not when it is trying to run a meeting and have the meeting finish at an appropriate time. The Covent’s Committee follows right behind Finance in terms of its importance to a Board of Directors. They set policy for fines, foreclosures, and violations. Often the persons serving on this committee are the most “hated” within the community. They are also the one committee sworn to uphold privacy of complaints, fines and the people involved. Well-manicured communities would not be possible without their help. This committee saves the Board hours of deliberation, as they have done all reviews within the Committee meeting. The Property and Grounds Committee is one of the more active committees in SCAL. They are tasked with comparing RFP’s. They make recommendations on landscaping changes, fitness equipment, etc. Without their expertise and the time they take to interview vendors, compare the rfp’s, etc., your Board of Directors would be caught in a never ending battle to get things done effectively and efficiently at a cost that keeps our assessments stable. The Lifestyle Committee, as its name implies, is responsible for making sure clubs function properly and meet the Club Guidelines. We have a well-organized committee. Each committee member brings something unique to the table. The Finance Committee is challenged with making sure the financials are complete and accurate every month. They recommend investment decisions. They are responsible for looking over certain contracts – landscape, management, and the reserve study. This committee requires a dedicated team who do not have to be bankers to make important decisions. Without their help, the Board, namely the treasurer and the president, would have a huge task at hand reviewing documents and making the proper decisions. While it was no small feat to bring to stage a new, immersive show like this to Las Vegas, management believed in the mission and movement behind Cherry Boom Boom.” Cherry Boom Boom is leading a movement about empowerment for strong, sexy women – with a great storyline threaded throughout a visceral rock-n-roll performance– so it is only appropriate it started with three women rocking their way to the Trop. *Not valid with any other offers, discounts, or prior sales. Fletcher is considered a moderate trail. It’s approximately four miles round trip. It is a beautiful tree-lined trail with a spring and narrow canyon to explore. It’s recommended to use your poles for this hike. Hikers will meet in front of the SCAL Community Center at 8:30 a.m. and carpool from there. Dress in layers, apply sunscreen, wear comfortable shoes, bring snacks and, most important, bring plenty of water. Mark your calendars as this will be the club’s last hike until October 18. The Sun City Aliante Songsters “60s Rewind Concert” was held in the Vista Ballroom. The evenings were “out of sight!” The Sun City Aliante Songsters performed their “60s Rewind Concert” on Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16, 2016 in the Vista Ballroom. Under the direction of Judy Shields, they sang a variety of songs from the 1960s. Included was a comical version of “Downtown” (Las Vegas Style) with the words rewritten by the Songster’s pianist Jane Mehta. In their festive 60s fashion, the choir sang “Stand by Me,” “Aquarius,” Elvis’ “Come on Everybody,” “California Dreamin’,” The Beatles “Yesterday,” “Surfin USA,” with Matt Snow singing and walking the room and “surfing” on a boogie board… and many other iconic songs. The audience participated by assisting the Songsters with Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”… singing the bum, bum, bum’s, doo doo doo’s and so good, so good, so good! The audience did a wonderful job learning and singing Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Oh, Rock My Soul,” led by percussionist/guitarist Rod Stark. The finale was Neil Diamond’s “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother,” with the Songsters singing the ending with their arms around each other. The Aliante Treble Makers (ATMs – a cappella group of six Songster members) performed five songs, including “California Dreamin’” a medley of “Johnny Angel,” “It’s My Party,” and “I Only Want to Be with You,” “I’ll Be There by the Jackson 5,” Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence,” and John Lennon’s “Imagine.” They veered from their usual a cappella style to fit the era and were accompanied by Jane Mehta on the piano. The Songsters’ men had the spotlight while singing “My Girl” and the women shined with their “60s Rewind” medley of “Stop! In the Name of Love,” “Baby Love,” “Please Mr. Postman,” “My Guy” and “Chapel of Love.” Rod Stark did a “fab” job on his drums playing “Wipe Out,” accompanied by Marta Swart on the piano, and soloing on guitar was Ed Brown. Rod was so “fab” on the drums, the audience shouted for more! Jane Mehta, the Songsters pianist was “rockin’ out” (1960s slang for “spectacular”) on the keyboard with assistance from Annette Gertzen as her page-turner. Ed Brown, a new member, accompanied the choir on his guitar. The Songsters put in many hours of practice; and it takes a joint effort to put a concert together. From music selection by Director Judy Shields, Jane Mehta learning all the piano accompaniments, 26 - June 2016 continues on page 27 F CHARTER CLUB CORNER & SPECIAL INTEREST SUN CITY ALIANTE SONGSTERS continued from page 26 decoration, room and sound set up, tickets, etc., the Songsters would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work in making the “60s Rewind Concert” such a huge success! The Vista Ballroom was packed with a full house both nights thanks to the “groovy” audiences; the Songsters love and appreciate their devotion and support. All in all, everyone had a “blast!” “Peace Out!” The Songsters will be taking a break for the summer, with many members traveling in the U.S. and some out of the country. Practice will resume in the fall. If you are interested in joining the Songsters, please contact Director Judy Shields at (702) 476-0594 or Co-Director Connie Bensler at (702) 738-0025. Also, she still owns the title of Miss Showgirl International 1971. She was a professional dancer most of her life and still dances with the ladies. Her oldest member is a gentleman (yes, they have one) who is 87 years young. All of her dancers are from so many varied and interesting lives and have never danced professionally. You can check some of their numbers out on Google or YouTube under Aliante Steppers. Our club welcomes any and all residents of our SCAL community to become members. Today, a total of 253 people have joined the Veterans Club. There is a very active Veterans Auxiliary, which conducts their own meetings and develops projects. The Veterans Club sponsors a few fund raisers, such as an annual pancake breakfast, a picnic and a spaghetti dinner. Please visit us and bring your story; we’re listening. One hundred percent of our profits go to supporting veteran and active duty military causes. T H E Margo’s proud of the fact that she started the group 10 years ago and now they are the Official Dance Group for the Ms. Senior Nevada Pageant held every year at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas. Also, last year they won three gold medals in the Dance category at the Senior Olympics. One thing that seniors know about dance that younger dancers still have not learned is that anybody can dance and enjoy movement no matter how old they are. Dancing does not have to be perfect, just enjoyable. Her goals this year are to continue and add more seniors to their program and continue with their charity work. My wife of twenty-nine years, Donna, and I bought in Sun City Aliante in 2008 and made our final move here from Seattle in 2010. I retired from IBM in 1995 with a 30-year career in marketing and sales of office equipment and personal computers. My second career was with the U.S. Post Office for 13 years as a door-to-door letter carrier in Seattle. - In Margo’s opinion, the main thing that separates her dance team from other dance programs is that they are a non-profit group and all classes are free. Additionally, members of this group are responsible for the cost of costumes. They hold fund raisers such as garage sales to help with the cost. That wasn’t the case in 1969, when I got out of the Army Signal Corp. Our society then had a negative view of those of us who served in our military. Times have changed. Now I stand tall and wear my Sun City Aliante Veteran’s Club uniform with pride. I want to celebrate those who sacrificed for our freedom. Every veteran has a story to tell. All we have to do is listen and be grateful. W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M SUN CITY ALIANTE STEPPERS INTERVIEW WITH MARGO YOUNG VETERANS CLUB I am honored to be your new Veterans Club Chairman.
