From the Supervisor’s Desk
Holidays of Hope
Every year, as the holidays approach, families in Vernon
Township gather to celebrate with festive food, decorations
and gifts. It is sometimes easy to forget that there are
families in the township that are struggling just to put food
on the table. Holiday festivities and gifts are not in the
picture for these families.
Vernon Township offers the following holiday programs to
help less fortunate families in the township.
Thanksgiving Dinner Basket Program
William Peterson
Township Supervisor
The Thanksgiving Baskets provide township families
with a non-perishable Thanksgiving dinner. A gift card can be included for the purchase of a
turkey or perishable items. Vernon Township will assign a family to you and supply a list of
suggestions for the basket. Delivery of baskets to the township is on Friday, November 22nd.
Holiday Gift Program
The holiday gift program provides families an opportunity to receive gifts during this
wonderful time of the year. The township will provide you with the family’s wish list that
can be used to purchase the family’s gifts. Gifts will be accepted at the township on either
Monday, December 9th or Tuesday, December 10th.
If you and your family wish to sponsor a family or you feel your family would benefit from
these programs please contact Kathie at (847) 634-4600 by October 4, 2013.
Vernon Township services are available to residents in all or portions of the villages of Buffalo Grove, Indian Creek, Lincolnshire,
Long Grove, Mettawa, Mundelein, Riverwoods, Vernon Hills, the City of Lake Forest, and unincorporated Vernon Township.
The Vernon Township Newsletter is
published periodically by Vernon Township

From the Desk of the Assessor
Expect your assessment notices earlier this year. Assessment notices are supposed to be sent out by Lake County around August this year.
Recent legislation required Township Assessors to return the assessment roll to the county by July 15th versus October 15th for past
years. Assessment information can be found on the Lake County’s web page at www.lakecountyil.gov.
Check Your Tax Bills
By now you should have received your tax bill from the Lake County Treasurer’s Office. We would advise you at this time to look over
your bill and make sure you are receiving the exemptions you are eligible for from the list below.
Homestead Limited Exemption everyone receives this exemption as long as the property is the primary residence. Primary residence
means you live at that property; it is the address that appears on your driver’s license and is NOT a rental property. If you are not
receiving this exemption, please call our office so that it can be corrected. If you are receiving the Homestead Limited Exemption on
more then one property, it is essential to call our office as well to get this corrected. Receiving an exemption on more than one property
is against the law.
Senior Homestead Exemption is for those of you who are 65 years or older. You should see this on your tax bill as long as you have
contacted our office to sign up for it. For the 2013 tax bill payable in 2014, this exemption will go up from $4,000 to $5,000.
Senior Freeze Exemption is an additional exemption for seniors whose income is $55,000 or below. This exemption freezes only the
assessment NOT the tax rate. The tax dollars requested by your taxing bodies’ yearly budgets divided by the total taxable assessment of
their district equals the tax rate. All the tax rates are calculated by the tax extension office of the Lake County Clerk.
Vernon Township Inspections
The Vernon Township Assessor’s Office does inspections on properties within the township throughout the year. No advance phone calls
are made by the assessor’s office, as this would be unfeasible because of the amount of inspections made daily. Upon an inspection, the
field personnel will come to the door first with identification. The property owner can either provide the information requested or the
Assessor’s Office will estimate the information. If possible the information will be obtained from the exterior. Inspections are triggered
by:
•
•
•
•
•
Information not in the records that has been obtained from appraisal reports, multiple listings, and neighbors comparing properties.
Building permits issued by the various villages
Building permits issued by Lake County for unincorporated areas of Vernon Township
Field check requested by a Deputy Assessor when an old record card is not totally clear.
Request made by the property owner.
All of Vernon Township property record cards are now in the process of being converted to computer drawings. Any questions regarding
this may be answered by the assessor’s office Monday-Friday from 8:30-4:30 and Saturday from 9:00-12:00.
Temporary Handicapped Placards
Vernon Township issues temporary handicapped placards valid for up to 90 days. The Township can issue only one placard for 90 days in
a year period. If your physician states that you need the placard longer, you will need to take your application to one of the Secretary of
State offices for processing. The Secretary of State offices can issue a placard up to 6 months.
If you need a Permanent placard, Vernon Township can issue a temporary placard for 90 days, make a copy of your application and then you
will mail the application to Springfield for the permanent placard.
If you have any questions please feel free to call the township at (847) 634-4600.

Highway Department Briefs (continued from page 4)
April Flood
The April rain brought devastation to the residents of Pekara Subdivision within Vernon Township. Some residents left their homes
until the water receded, while others stayed to fight the battle against the rising water from entering their homes. Many residents in the
subdivision are long time neighbors. They were willing and able to help each other by making and carrying sandbags to their homes.
At the end of such events the highway department asks that the home owners bring their sandbags and debris to the road to be picked
up. A big thank you goes out to the men and women stationed at the Great Lake Naval Base. These men and women came to the aid
of the Township and the residents by removing the sandbags from resident’s yards and filling the township trucks so the bags could be
hauled away.

Vernon Township Food Pantry
Vernon Township Food Pantry has received many generous donations
from the community. The township is very grateful to everyone who
has donated.
The pantry helps families throughout the year and relies on the
community to keep the shelves stocked.
Please check out our Facebook at www.vernontownship.com to see
what the pantry is in need of. You can also call the township to see
what is needed or to schedule a pick up if you have a large donation.
The township accepts donations Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. until
4:00 p.m.
6th grade Girl Scout Troop # 41416 from Twin Groves
Middle School provided baby sitting for students and
their siblings during Parent-Teacher conferences in
exchange for non-perishable food items which the girls
donated to the Vernon Township Food Pantry. Keep up
the good work girls.
Avery, a 2nd grader at Sprague School, was given a
school project called “Think Outside the Envelope:
How to Make the World a Better Place with $10.00”.
Avery chose to do a “post-holiday” food drive. Avery
used e-mail, word of mouth and phone calls to solicit
donations. She collected food and cash donations which
she used to purchase additional food products. All
food items were donated to the Vernon Township food
pantry. Vernon Township wishes to thank Avery for
helping the township food pantry.
Passports
Vernon Township accepts passport applications Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. No appointment is necessary, however
during lunch hours we could be very busy. We have passport photo service on site for the fee of $8.00 per set of photos. Reminder:
Vernon Township does not accept credit cards; payment to the US Department of State must be a personal check or
money order. The township will accept cash for the agent fee and photo.
Prior to arriving at the township it would be very beneficial for you to check the Department of State’s website at www.travel.state.gov.
The web site allows you to download appropriate applications, informs you of the documentation you will need to process an application,
and estimates current processing times. Please note that if you fill out the application by hand, use black ink only. Forms completed in
other color ink will have to be re-written.
