Would you want to be there to witness a specific event, meet a particular historic figure or family member who inspires you, or just experience the way of life for a smithtowner at that time? Use historic research to define the value of your decision. Submissions for the contest will be accepted from now until June 14, 2013, 5 p.m. in the Smithtown Historical Society’s Headquarters at the Roseneath Cottage, 239 Middle Country Road, Smithtown, NY 11787. For more detailed information regarding the rules and regulations pertaining to the contest, please visit the Society’s website to view an information flier or call 265-6768. 516-662-1612 We are a St. James Business OUR TOWN • APRIL 2013 – 23 – YOU ARE CONSERVATIVE... OUR TOWN • APRIL 2013 – 32 – H I S T O R I C A L L Y S P E A K I N G LIVES, LOVES AND LAMENTS OF THE PEOPLE OF ST. JAMES More of Andy Wolke’s Memories of the Heart of the Little Country Town of St. James in the 1950’s by Bradley harris, smithtown historian last month I wrote about andy Wolke’s memories of the heart of the little country town of st. James in the 1950’s. that article concentrated on the stores and residences that were on the east side of lake avenue. this article contains andy’s memories of the businesses and houses that were on the west side of lake avenue. In the 1950’s, the north end of Lake Avenue did not run directly to the St. James Firehouse on North Country Road. Lake Avenue terminated at Moriches Road, merged with it and ran behind Gould’s Hotel that occupied the little triangular park that is located at the north end of Lake Avenue today. Many people will remember when the Gold Coast Two was located in this hotel. But Andy was too young to enter any bar in the 1950’s, so he didn’t remember much about it. Andy Wolke did remember that there was a farmhouse and a large barn on the southwest corner of the intersection of Moriches Road and North Coun- Larry Smith’s Store that sold candy, soda, and ice cream near the railroad station. The store used to have a porch that ran along the Lake Avenue side of the building and once had a two-lane bowling alley behind it. try Road. He remembers that Winthrop Taylor’s farm Superintendent lived in the farmhouse and one of his duties was to monitor the herd of Guernsey cows that were kept in the surrounding pastures. The pastures stretched to the south behind the Mazzochi house on Lake Avenue and ran as far south as the St. James Elementary School. Open fields stretched from the cow pasture fence line all the way to the railroad tracks since these fields were dedicated to potatoes. The cows had to be milked twice a day, because if the cows weren’t milked, their udders would become distended with milk and the cows would go berserk, charging and running down people. Andy recalled that this happened to one of Taylor’s cows one day when it broke out of the pasture, ran amuck down Lake Avenue, and fatally trampled somebody. The first large house that was standing south of the farm on the west side of Lake Avenue was Joe Mazzochi’s house. Joe was a truck mechanic and he repaired trucks in a garage that was behind his house. Andy recalled that Joe was always covered in grease. South of Mazzochi’s house was the St. James Elementary School. When Andy attended school, there were no wings extending off the back of the school, just the main block and the south wing of the original building were standing. There was a large baseball field and basketball court behind the school where the kids played whenever they had recess. South of the school on the front lawn was the veteran’s memorial, and continued on page 34 SUNNY ROADest.RUG CLEANERS 1948 Robin A. The sparks escaping from the smoke stacks of the locomotives caused some raging forest fires across St. James. St. James in the 1950’s continued from page 32 Andy remembered that there were two machine guns that the kids would play with gunning down imaginary bad guys. Further south of the school there was an abandoned house. Andy remembers that he and his friends from school would sit on the back porch of the house and eat their bag lunches. The school offered hot lunches but Andy’s Mom knew better than to give Andy lunch money, so Andy always had a sandwich. On Fri- ST. JAMES days, Andy always munched on his favorite Swedish delicacy – a sardine sandwich. If by chance Andy had lunch money, he would find a way to go across Lake Avenue to the ice cream store that was opposite the school and buy a “Sidewalk Sundae.” As far as Andy was concerned, it was the best ice cream cake made. Andy and his friends would explore the old house and he distinctly remembers that the big house had a central staircase that ran up to second floor and a narrow stairway in the back of the house that ran from the upstairs floor down to the kitchen below. The old house was eventually demolished to make way for a large railroad parking lot. Beyond the abandoned house was St. James Railroad Station surrounded by its parking lot. Behind the station there was an outhouse. When the train pulled out, the outhouse bounced along behind it, and the last anyone saw of that outhouse were its parts and pieces flying in the air as the train picked up speed. The steam locomotives that pulled the trains were noisy and belched smoke and sparks into the sky, so the people living along the tracks never gave it a second thought when they found bits and pieces of wood from the outhouse in their fields. The kids in town had a lot to chuckle about anyway. Fortunately, no one was in the outhouse when it got yanked off its foundation. On the south side of the tracks was Larry Smith’s store that sold candy, soda and ice cream. There was also a telephone in the store and Andy recalled the day he dropped a nickel into the phone and it wouldn’t work. Then he discovered that the reason the phone wouldn’t work was because the phone company had raised the price of calls to ten cents and nobody told him. Andy liked going into Larry Smith’s store since the young lady who ran the store, Carol Henze, liked him and always made him feel welcome. Andy would order a cherry coke or a chocolate eggcream (like an ice cream soda The St. James Hotel that used to stand where the little triangular park is to be found today in front of the firehouse. One day when Andy stopped in with his friends, he got to use the two lane bowling alley that was beneath the store. Andy remembered that they walked down several steps into the basement where the bowling alleys were located. The bowling alleys extended out the back of the store and the shed that covered them was partly below ground. The shed had a flat roof with small windows cut into the walls just below the ceiling, so there was plenty of natural light on the alleys. The bowling pins had to be set manually and the balls were returned on a track. The bowling alley was removed when LILCO built an electric substation behind the store. To the south of Larry Smith’s store was the house where Dicky Smith lived. Andy recalled that the house was actually owned by Dicky Smith’s mother, an attractive blonde who seemed to be a single parent because Andy never saw Dicky’s father. Dicky Smith was an older boy who was friends with Andy’s cousin Chuck Grodski, and Dicky was kind to Andy, and tolerated his presence when he tagged along with his older cousin. Andy never knew if Dicky Smith and Larry Smith were somehow related, but he never thought about it simply because there were so many Smiths in St. James that you never questioned who was related to whom. It was just too complicated. Just to the south of Dicky Smith’s house, 2nd Avenue ran across Lake Avenue, by Dicky Smith’s house, until it joined Railroad Avenue. On the southwest corner of the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Lake Avenue was the stationery store that Irving Young owned. His brother, Morris, kept the name Yochmowitz, and he ran the grocery store that was next door. This was the grocery store that his father, Sam Yochmowitz, had owned for years. Andy occasionally went into this store to pick up some items for his Mom, but Mrs. Wolke didn’t shop there because she felt prices were too high and she preferred the A&P in Smithtown. There was a house south of the grocery store and Andy recalled that a Jewish family named Roe lived there. Andy went to school with the Roe children, and Roslyn Roe was in his class at St. James Elementary School. Andy knew that the Roe family was Jewish, and many times he saw Mr. Roe leave his home dressed in black, wearing a Derby hat, and looking like he was headed for religious services at a synagogue in New York City. South of the Roe’s house was a large open lot that the Veterans of Foreign Wars used each summer for their annual fair. Andy recalled that the VFW Post had vendors selling food, hawkers pushing games, and sharpies selling carnival rides. There was always a booth where you got three chances to knock over a canvas doll with a baseball, but the dolls were spaced far apart and far enough away, that it was hard to hit them down and win a doll. But the lines to try and do so were always long. Andy recalled that the St. James Water District had its office in the VFW building and he remembered the Superintendent of the Water District because his house in St. James was on Andy’s paper route. Andy always saw the man washing and polishing the 1948 GMC truck that belonged to the water district, and he made the truck’s green body and black fenders sparkle and shine. South of the VFW hall was a S P E A K I N G vacant lot, and on the corner of 3rd Street, there was another large house that was owned by the Shevlins. This house is still standing and is today the pool supply store. The Shevlins were also Jewish. In the 1950’s there were not many Jewish families living in St. James. There were not many Italians living in St. James either. The town was mostly populated by Norwegians, Swedes, Germans and Irish. And the Jewish families that did live in St. James, owned continued on page 38 Green Bell lawn Care 631-678-3298 www.GreenBellLawnCare.com gUaraNTEEd loWEsT PricEs! FREE EStimAtES • CALL tODAY! The Shevlins owned the dress factory that was just across 3rd Street from their house. Today it is the bicycle shop. It seems odd that a dress factory was located in this building, but Andy recalled that the factory produced dresses well into the 1960’s before it shut down. There was a private home south of the dress factory. Beyond it was a building that housed two businesses: an insurance company that occupied the north side of the building and the Sugar Bowl which occupied the south side. Kate Smith ran the Sugar Bowl, her husband worked for Grumman. Andy remembered that Kate sold candy, soda and ice cream. And BB’s for BB guns. It was the one place in town that did and Andy used to get his BB’s there. Beyond the Sugar Bowl, there was another house, and south of it was a liquor store that was built in the 1950’s. Andy remembered that an old Italian couple ran the store but Andy had no reason to be in the store and didn’t remember anything else. South of the liquor store, that is today the Tic Toc Café, was an empty lot and then Paul Stepf’s Garage. Paul Stepf’s Garage had two gas pumps in front of his garage and drivers could pull their cars up to the curb and fill up. Andy was in school with Walter Dubicki who later had a radiator repair service in the front of Stepf’s Garage. Today the garage is Dowling’s Auto Body repair shop. These were the stores and homes that existed on the west side of Lake Avenue in the 1950’s. And in last month’s edition of our town, Andy told us about the businesses and homes that existed on the east side of Lake Avenue. Andy Wolke’s memories have made it possible to recapture what the streetscape of little town of St. James was like in the 1950’s. So now you have a nearly complete picture of what the heart of St. James was like over 50 years ago. The remarkable thing is that the center of the town has not changed radically and many of the same houses and stores that existed 50 years ago are still with us today. Big changes have happened along Lake Avenue south of Fourth Street, and along North Country Road from the LIRR continued on page 112 Now new in our loca tion! g lothin es! c r e n ric Desig table p a be gets e at un s a ! rch y pu o a cure r e v E t oser l c s u 20% Off Any Purchase With this coupon. Now is a great time to Repair, Restore or Renovate to bring new life to your lawn. How do you determine what process your lawn needs to look its best? You first need to assess its current condition and determine what type of lawn you want to have. Knowing what you have and where you want to go will determine the "Plan of Action.” REPAiR? if you have a good lawn with just a few problem areas, spot seeding this spring will thicken up these areas. REStORE? if your lawn is fair to good but has chronic weak, mossy or weedy areas, a soil test is recommended. most lawn problems start with the soil, Don't guess, tESt! Start soil preparation by opening up the soil with core aeration and applying soil building soil amendments, such as lime, humates and compost. Now your soil is ready for seeding. mechanical slice seeding is the most effective. Otherwise broadcast seed with a spreader or by hand. Keep in mind a healthy lawn can support no more than 11 plants per square inch. So Do Not Overseed. in weak and bare areas the seed should be lightly raked in or top dressed with a thin layer of soil or compost to insure good seed to soil contact. RENOVAtiON? A renovation is recommended if your lawn is 50% or more weeds or there is a presence of weak grass varieties such as creeping fescue or bentgrass patches. A renovation replaces deteriorated turf with newer stronger grass varieties. (Recommended grass varieties at Helpful tips and Before and After pictures at www.emeraldmagic.com) First step in prepping for an effective renovation would be to mow as low as you can go and scalp the lawn area. Another option is to treat the area with a non-selective vegetation control (read and follow all label instructions). this will help eliminate the competition. Many of my consultations, since we began the Home Decorating Club in 2001, have been exclusively about kitchen planning and design. Obviously, if the homeowner sees the value and has the budget for a new space plan as well as kitchen cabinet and appliance replacement, more can be done. I was just on a consult which involved redoing the entire first floor including the kitchen. By suggesting that the washing machine and dryer be incorporated into their new kitchen plan behind “pantry” doors, I allowed the laundry room to be utilized for sorely needed closet storage and cabinet space. It created new space the homeowners never knew they had. As part of a kitchen redesign, old appliances should be replaced, if possible. Reaping the benefits of new technology, energy efficiency and better space planning the kitchen should be able to accommodate larger capacity appliances as well as more storage and counter space. In my quest for what’s new and hot in the world of appliances, I discovered, as I asked the experts, that there’s a lot out there that’s exciting and innovative. Induction cook tops are faster, more efficient and easy to clean. Magnetic forces between the cook top and your cookware are what actually cooks your food. Remove your pot and the cook top is cool to the touch, which is great for households with young families, older folks, or anyone who tends to be klutzy in the kitchen. With an induction cook top, you can boil water in minutes, saving time as well. (And by the way, this is not a new technology) If you want to cook a 6-pound roasting chicken in just 30 minutes that’s crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside, check out the new speed cook microwave. The speed cook process allows you to prepare dinner in less than half the time you ordinarily do. Ah-technology – it’s wonderful! So, when is a refrigerator not a refrigerator? When it’s a separate refrigerator drawer – naturally. This allows the kids to access juice, water or anything anyone uses frequently without wasting energy and opening your full size refrigerator excessively. It can be placed anywhere that’s easy to reach, even in your island. Look for Energy Star labels on your new appliances which let you know you will not only be saving on energy and water costs since they use 10-15% less energy and water than standard brands, but they are friendlier to the environment. If just 1 in 10 homes used Energy Star qualified appliances, the change would be like planting 1.7 million new acres of trees! There are great new appliance products out there and the people developing them are really continued on page 112 TREE SERVICE Tree removal Pruning Topping chipping stump grinding Painting & Powerwashing Keith Barbone 202 Smithtown Blvd. Nesconset, NY 11767 Free Wood & Woodchips e Licensed & Insured • Suffolk Lic. #20570-HI q 631-672-7510 631-584-5575 COMPETITION TREE, INC. When choosing the size of a plant consider if it is a slowgrower. If so, the largest plant would be the best value. Otherwise choose a plant that does not look too over-grown or worn out. If it is a plant that blooms, it is best to choose one with some flower buds showing, not in full bloom. This way you can verify the color flower and enjoy its full blooming show at home. If it is in bloom already, you will not get too much show from it when planted. Of course you want a healthy plant. Do not pick a plant with pale and/or brown leaves, the plant has not had enough water. Likewise a plant that had too much water will have a dead crown and/or roots that are rot- ted. If a plant was newly potted it will be loose within the soil and can be easily pulled out. It will probably take a long time to get established. This is the month to get outside and take a walk in the woods. Look for the fern plants, curled up and ready to unfurl their bright green feathery fronds. There are all types of signs of life on the forest floor, poking through the dry leaves. The understory plants show tiny specks of green life on their branches. High above, the birds, squirrels and owls are busy building their nests. Then back in your neighborhood, look for the bright yellow daffodils, colorful tulips and the smiling faces of pansies. continued on page 72 April Room of the Month Since 1985 Specializing in: • Custom draperies • Honeycomb shades • silhouette shades™ • Plantation shutters • Wood Blinds • Vertical Blinds 631-366-0212 creative Windows, ltd. 367 Lake Ave., Saint James Tues. & Thurs. 10am-5pm saturday 10am-3pm Mon.-Wed.-fri. by Appointment www.MyCreativeWindows.com Let us Feature YOuR Home Next month OUR TOWN • APRIL 2013 – 71 – As RELIABLE as the people who build it CHAIN SAWS STARTING AT $17995 FS 40 C-E TRIMMER 16995 BLOWERS STARTING AT $14995 FS 56 RC-E TRIMMER 22995 TRIMMERS STARTING AT $16995 MM 55 STIHL YARD BOSS® $ $ $ Lightweight, fuelefficient trimmer Versatile, straight-shaft trimmer Cultivate, then alternate with easy-to-switch attachments (sold separately) STIHL Easy2Start™ system makes starting almost effortless FREE COMBO PACK FREE TRIMMER LINE WITH FS 40 C-E PURCHASE A $1299 NES-SRP value. STIHLdealers.com OUR TOWN • APRIL 2013 – 72 – H O M E & G A R D E N Getting Back to Nature continued from page 70 There is much to do outside now. Start by adding generous amounts of compost to all your garden beds. Plant some peas or some more peas in the garden, they grow in the cooler weather of spring. They are so worth it. If you have seedlings of lettuce, kale and broccoli, harden them by putting them outside a little more each day for a week or so before planting outside. Although the average last frost date for our area is the 15th of May, it is best to wait until Memorial Day to plant those warm season annual flowers and vegetables. By the end of April you can plant seeds of some annuals like zinnias directly in the garden. Celebrate Earth Day on the April 22 by taking the family and a few garbage bags and head out to the street, the park or play- ground, beach or forest and collect any trash laying around. Arbor Day is April 26, how about planting a fruit tree in the yard. The children will love picking and eating fruit they helped grow. Back to the earth, it is what we need to do. As you think about what plants you are going to plant in your containers this year, think about vegetables to add interest. Pick a Swiss chard plant with its tall, upright leaves which will show off its deep green leaves and red veins as the sun shines on it. The glossy purple of the eggplant will nicely compliment a grouping of purple and red flowers. Pair the silvery green leaves of a sage plant with white, pink and lavender flowers for a quiet, soft look. There are many types of kale. Combine these strong plants of big bold leaves, with zinnia or HARDWARE STORE dwarf sunflowers. Soften the container’s edge with sweet potato vines, soft fiber optic grass, or trailing lobelia. I think we all really need to get back to nature. So many are so involved with all their electronics, sitting inside pressing buttons of one kind or another. We need to feel the warm, soft soil on our hands and to breathe in the sweet, earthy scents around us. How wonderful to feel that smooth, soft caress of a warm spring breeze on our cheek. To just sit quietly in the woods and listen to the life all around us – BEautIFul. Editor’s Note: June liardi, a st. James resident for over 30 years, is a wife and mother of three sons. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. The mission was to share their passion for community service with the entire Smithtown High School East student body, as well as their surrounding communities, in order to help those right in their own backyard. The girls hosted a series of events, such as a bake sale, a clothing drive, a food drive, logo sales, and multiple restaurant fundraisers at Moe’s Southwest Grill in Smithtown and Dunkin’ Donuts in St. James, to help raise funds for the Smithtown Children’s Foundation. They also set up a booth at St. James Day to raise awareness in the community about the existence of the Smithtown Children’s Foundation and its many accomplishments. Through their hard work and dedication, Amanda and Alycia were able to raise over $2,000. Besides raising money for the Smithtown Children’s Foundation, the fundraisers helped to unite local families and businesses and, in addition, helped to teach the Smithtown High School East DECA members how to turn their ideas into reality. “This was a very rewarding experience and it makes us smile just knowing how many people we were able to help. It was great to see the Smithtown community work together to support such a beneficial cause,” stated Amanda. The girls are extremely appreciative of all their supporters and would like to thank their fellow students and their fellow community members for their generosity. On March 6, 2013, Amanda and Alycia competed at the DECA State Conference in Rochester, NY and came in first place. Auto Accidents if you have been involved in a car accident, whiplash injuries need to be taken very seriously. Because symptoms of a whiplash injury can take days or weeks to manifest, it is easy to be fooled into thinking that you are not as injured as you really are. Too often people don’t seek treatment following a car accident because they don’t feel hurt. By far, the most common injury to the neck is a whiplash injury. Whiplash, also referred to as a hyperextension/hyperflexion injury, is a term used to describe injuries to the cervical spine in which the head is forcefully projected backwards and then forwards or from side to side. This forceful movement results in the damage to the supporting ligaments, muscles and other connective tissues in the neck and upper back. although it is most commonly associated with rear-end auto collisions, it may be a result of any activity that causes these forceful movements. The symptoms of whiplash may be immediate or occur several days afterwards. a variety of symptoms can be experienced; muscle spasms, headaches, shoulder/neck pain, nausea, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, dizziness, restricted range of motion and numbness. Unfortunately, by the time more serious complications develop, some of the damage from the injury may have become permanent. The physical damage of whiplash can become chronic and affect the quality of one’s life. numerous studies have shown that years after whiplash victims settle their insurance claims; roughly half of them state that they still suffer with symptoms from their injuries. if you have been in a motor vehicle accident or any other Member: • American Chiropractic Association • international Chiropractic Association • Council on diagnostic imaging kind of accident, don’t assume that you escaped injury if you are not currently in pain. And as I write, no one wants to own shares in precious metals stocks. The Philadelphia Gold & Silver Index (the XAU) which tracks mining shares has been smashed back to 1996 levels. Meanwhile the price of gold bullion has moved spectacularly over that period from $388 per ounce to $1557 today (APRIL 3). This data can be interpreted in several ways: 1) if you want to benefit from a potential rise in gold prices then own gold bullion or some derivative equivalent or 2) the poor action in the miners is foreshadowing a de- cline in bullion prices or 3) the miners have deviated massively from their historical relationship to gold prices and if you believe in mean reversion, then miners may be a unique opportunity. For those inclined to learn more about stocks related to the mining sector, here’s a brief primer on how one might think about sorting through the myriad of publicly traded companies: 1. Exploration & Development Stage – These tend to be smaller companies (referred to as “juniors”) that are doing their geology work to find gold deposits, going through the permitting process and eventually building the mine. Then investors will hope that one day before the company runs out of money, enough gold is produced to actually start generating a return. This is perhaps the riskiest corner of the mining industry. However, if you get it right, the returns can be enormous. 2. Producers – These are the SoundFront ASSet MAnAgeMent privAte weAlth AdviSorS Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication Flat Fee Wealth Management Program $5,000 for up to $5 million in assets Rich Masino | 631.584.2283 | [email protected] (Complimentary Consultation) www.soundfrontasset.com SoundFront Asset Management is a registered investment advisor. OUR TOWN • APRIL 2013 companies that actually have gold production and so their share prices tend to be a bit more stable than the juniors. Though it should be stated that anything related to gold mining is inherently volatile. And of course like any commodity producer, these companies must also maintain an exploration and development pipeline to replenish existing mines which have a finite amount of resource to be extracted. 3. Prospect Generators – This is a very interesting business model. The prospect generator uses its intellectual capital to find worthwhile projects to develop. But rather than take on the costs and risk associated with mine construction, it partners (usually with a senior or mid-tier producer) who accepts all those headaches. This allows the prospect generator to build a robust portfolio of development projects. Let’s say a development stage company makes a discovery and wants to build-out the mine. Rather than go to the debt markets to raise capital or dilute existing shareholders through an equity offering, management will do a deal with a royalty company. The royalty company puts up the cash to finance the project and in return they will receive a contracted amount of gold at a fixed price. So for example, if the deal is struck at fixed price of $500 per ounce and the spot price for gold is $1500, then the royalty company makes a tidy spread of $1,000 per ounce. And since the royalty company is unaffected by rising labor or operating costs, it has potentially huge upside leverage to the commodity price. In closing I would just say that given the precarious nature of the world backdrop in conjunction with rampant money-printing, gold related ideas make sense to me. However; diversification, proper position size and selectivity will be absolutely essential to those who wade into the miners. If you own a business, you may well follow a “do it now” philosophy – which is, of course, necessary to keep things running smoothly. Still, you also need to think about tomorrow – which means you’ll want to take action on your own retirement and business succession plans. Fortunately, you’ve got some attractive options in these areas. For example, you could choose a retirement plan that offers at least two key advantages: potential tax-deferred earnings and a wide array of investment options. Plus, some retirement plans allow you to make tax-deductible contributions. In selecting a retirement plan, you’ll need to consider several factors, including the size of your business and the number of employees. If your business has no full-time employees other than yourself and your spouse, you may consider a Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plan or an owner-only 401(k), sometimes known as an individual or solo 401(k). Or, if your goal is to contribute as much as possible, you may want to consider an owneronly defined benefit plan. If you have employees, you might want to investigate a SIMPLE IRA or even a 401(k) plan. Your financial advisor, working with plan design professionals and your tax advisor, can help you analyze the options and choose the plan that fits with your combined personal and business goals. Now, let’s turn to business succession plans. Ultimately, your choice of a succession plan strategy will depend on many factors, such as the value of your business, your need for the proceeds from the sale of the business for your retirement, your successor, and how well your business can continue without you. If your goal is to keep the business within the family, you’ll need to consider how much control you wish to retain (and for how long), whether you wish to gift or sell, how you balance your estate among your heirs, and who can reasonably succeed you in running the business. Many succession planning techniques are available, including an outright sale to a third party, a sale to your employees or management (at once or over time), or the transfer of your business within your family through sales or gifts during your life, at your death or any combination thereof. Many succession plans include a buy-sell agreement. Upon your death, such an agreement could allow a business partner or a key employee to buy the business from your surviving spouse or whoever inherits your business interests. To provide the funds needed for the partner or OUR TOWN • APRIL 2013 employee (or even one of your children) to purchase the business, an insurance policy could be purchased. Your estate plan – including your will and any living trust – should address what happens with the business, in case you still own part or all of it at your death. The best-laid succession plans may go awry if the unexpected occurs. All these business succession options can be complex, so before choosing any of them, you will need to consult with your legal and financial advisors. Whether it’s selecting a retirement plan or a succession strategy, you’ll want to take your time and make the choices that are appropriate for your individual situation. You work extremely hard to run your business – so do whatever it takes to help maximize your benefits from it. The issue of how to plan for distribution of your hard earned assets deserves your attention in order to guarantee that your wishes will be reflected without great expense, complications or delay. Everybody wants to have a say in what will happen to his or her property upon death – who will get it, how much of it will be taxed and so forth. For some people, setting up an estate plan may also include strategies, such as setting up trusts that will reduce the amount of taxes that have to be paid during their lifetime or upon their death. Unless you have a properly prepared, signed and witnessed Will, New York State law will determine the distribution of your assets upon your death. This law is called the law of Intestacy. Many people mistakenly believe that when a married person with children dies without a will, the surviving spouse gets all the property. THIS IS UNTRUE. In New York, the surviving spouse will receive the first $50,000. of the estate, plus one-half of the residue, with the balance divided equally between the surviving children. If any child is under 18 years of age at the time of the parent’s death, such child’s inheritance will be placed in a guardianship account. Even if the surviving spouse is appointed guardian by the Court, prior approval of the Court will be necessary to pay for expenses such as the child’s education, clothing or living costs. An annual accounting of income and expenses will be required. Having a properly prepared Last Will and Testament will prevent this potential nightmare. Another very important reason to have a will prepared is so that the parents can select a guardian for their minor children in the event of the death of both parents. Without a will, the Court determines who will raise your children. For many years our lower intestines have been associated with trouble rather then advantage. Many products in the marketplace advocate the benefit of colon cleansing. In the western world, during the early to mid 20th century, there was a firm belief that a good “cleaning out” would solve many common health issues. New knowledge is completely changing this view. Our digestive system contains trillions of microorganisms whose role has been poorly understood. We know that they are necessary, but why? Two years ago a scientific paper was published identifying the basic outline of the living cells in our gut. This system has been labeled the Microbiome. It turns out that the basic mixture of microorganisms comes in three types which are not associated with race or ethnicity. What are they associated with? Well, being human for one but probably diet as well although this remains to be proven. The discovery of the Microbiome validates the theory that the appendix is an emergency laboratory for replacing components of the Microbiome that were lost due to stress, disease or starvation in prehistoric man. It would also seem to point to the human Microbiome being considered an organ system in its own right. Medical science has not established this yet but will most likely do this in our lifetime. Why is this important? Two recent discoveries have shown the connection between how we handle our food and the state of the Microbiome. The first concerned children in Africa who were suffering from a severe form of malnutrition called Kwashiorkor syndrome. These children were given the standard WHO diet containing enriched peanut butter1, short term antibiotics and a donation of good bacteria. Some children did not receive the bacteria. The group that received all three did markedly better then the control group. The measured endpoints were more weight gain and greater survival. The second discovery was just published recently and concerns weight loss in obese patients. This experiment was very basic and was done in a mouse model that should mimic the human model. The debate about our food choices goes well beyond “organic” and “processed.” I mean chocolate is natural but you can not live off chocolate alone (I bet some are willing to try). Whole grain bread from a commercial baker (a fixture of modern living) is certainly more efficient then baking at home. These food choices effect the health, balance and well being of our microbiota which in turn seems to play a role in our health. Having a high fiber diet increases the volume of water in our intestines both improving transit time and supplying water for the critical biochemical actions that take place during digestion. Ingesting probiotics increases the type of food available for our microbiota thereby continued see the mechanism for losing weight in people who undergo gastric bypass surgery. They found that the surgery not only restricts the quantity of food consumed but also changes the individual microbiota of the patient involved. When bacteria was transferred from the mice who had the surgery to special mice who had no bacteria in their gut, these mice also lost weight on a regular diet. With changes in diet and life style modern human populations are changing their microbiota as well as their major organ systems. We have cars and public transportation, so we no longer walk. More and more of the worldwide population has access to food and clean water (a good thing) but a lot of that food has increasing its efficiency. Probiotics can play a strong role in supporting and defining a well balanced Microbiota. Perhaps with future research we can learn how a balanced microbiota reduces the risk of some systemic problems such as diabetes in addition to the positive role they will play in supporting a healthy digestive system. The meniscus is a rubbery, Cshaped piece of cartilage that cushions your knee. Each of your knees has two menisci, one on the inner (medial) part of the knee, and the other on the outer (lateral) part. Together they act to absorb shock and stabilize the knee joint. A meniscal tear typically is caused by twisting or turning quickly on a bent knee, often with the foot planted on the ground. Although meniscal tears are common in those who play contact sports, anyone at any age can tear a meniscus. When people talk about having torn cartilage in their knee, they usually are talking about a meniscal tear. Signs and Symptoms When you tear a meniscus, you might: • Feel a sharp, intense pain in the knee area • Feel a "pop" or a tearing sensation • Have difficulty walking because of pain or a “catching” sensation • Have difficulty straightening the knee • Experience swelling How Physical Therapy Can Help? Meniscal injuries often can be managed without surgery. A short course of treatment can help determine whether your knee will recover without surgery. Physical Therapy plays an important role by controlling pain and swelling and by restoring full strength and mobility to your knee. To control pain and swelling, your PT may use ice and compression and will likely instruct you in the use of these treatments at home. Swelling is an important “guide” during your rehabilitation and can indicate when you are doing too much. Your therapist will design special exercises to maintain your strength during recovery and help restore full movement to the knee. You will be given a home program of exercises that are specific to your condition. As you recover, you will be advised on ways to maintain your fitness and activity level. Your PT will help you decide when you are ready to return to full activity. If You Need Surgery A more serious meniscal tear may need surgery. Surgically removing the torn cartilage (a procedure called a menisectomy) usually is a simple procedure that requires a brief course of physical therapy treatment. Most people are able to return to their previous level of activity, including sports, in fewer than two months. Meniscus Removal Following a simple menisectomy, your rehabilitation will likely be similar to that for nonsurgical injuries. Your therapist will use ice and compression to control pain and swelling and will show you how to use these treatments at home. The focus will be on helping you get back your strength and movement through special exercises performed in the clinic and at home. Generally, you will need to use crutches or a cane, but only until you can walk without pain or a limp. Meniscus Repair Sometimes the surgeon will decide that the torn meniscus can be repaired, instead of removed. Research studies show that if a meniscal repair is possible, the long-term outcome is better than removal because the repair can reduce the risk of OUR TOWN • APRIL 2013 arthritis later in life. Rehabilitation following a meniscal repair is slower and more extensive than with removal because the repaired tissue must be protected while it is healing. The type of surgical technique performed, the extent of your injury, and the preferences of the surgeon often determine how quickly you will be able to put weight on the leg, stop using crutches, and return to your previous activities. After a meniscal repair, your physical therapist will help you control pain and swelling, help restore your strength, and help you regain full motion to the knee as soon as it is safe to do so. You’ll have a program of exercises to do at home, and this program will be advanced as you improve. A brace may be used to help protect the repaired meniscus during the recovery phase. These braces usually allow you to fully straighten the knee but will limit your ability to bend it all the way, in order to prevent stress to the repair. Returning to Activity Whether your torn meniscus recovered on its own or required surgery, physical therapy will play an important role in helping you return to your previous activities. If you are an athlete, you may need a more extensive course of rehabilitation. Your therapist will help you fully restore your strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination to help maximize your return to sports and prevent re-injury. Return to sports varies greatly from one person to the next and depends upon the extent of the injury, the specific surgical procedure, the preference of the surgeon, and the type of sport. Gotta quit smoking? Need to relax and reduce your stress? Fearful of spiders, or flying, or going to the dentist, for example? Or just know that you need a boost in your life? More than ever, people are reaching out to hypnosis to awaken the power of the mind to begin regaining inner self control. If you’ve got a goal that has been escaping you for awhile, it’s time to try something new. Hypnosis and the hypnotic “trance” is perhaps one of the most relaxing times that you can have. Similar to meditation, hypnosis allows the busy working mind to settle down to allow the deeper thinking mind to feel St. James t Bohemia HYPNOSIS & COUNSELING t your inner strength and begin to re-build your inner motivation to stay on track. I like to call it a feeling of “active rest” where your body feels good enough to enjoy a moment to relax so much that all you want to do is just listen. And that is where hypnosis begins. And what is it that you are listening to? Your goals, your thoughts, and all the positive reinforcement you need to hear. The message that your deep thinking mind wants to tell the active “all-over-the-place” conscious mind but just can’t seem to make the connection. That’s what hypnosis is more about – most feel that you will “lose” control but it is completely the other way around. While in the hypnotic trance, you have full control of everything – you can move, cough, clear your throat – anything that you would normally do. Hypnosis is not sleep; but the amazing part is that when you are brought back to the full awareness, you will feel like you have just taken the best power nap of your life. I recently learned that Mrs. Brady (from the Brady Bunch – Florence Henderson) is a hypnotist. Jim was born in the Bronx and served in the U.S. Navy as an Electrician Mate for four years aboard the USS Midway during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged he embarked on a career in television communications. He was employed by a company named Chyron, where he became the Vice President of Engineering. Jim was a great friend to everyone he knew and a mentor to anyone who sought his guidance. He developed Chyron 3, a leading-edge, small graphics system that expanded sports production graphics capabilities, advancing graphics for baseball, football, basketball and many other events. He was a leader in the development effort of breakthrough system – the Chyron 4, which revolutionized graphics on television. As an outstanding leader, he stood up for his people and was always very supportive. He had strong opinions, and was never afraid to voice them. In addition he was very competitive, whether at racquetball, tennis or the chessboard. He enjoyed the competition, but never took the result personally either way; another life lesson. After leading the Chyron 4 project, which turned into the most lucrative and industry-changing graphics product Chyron ever built, Jim became head of International Marketing. He traveled internationally throughout Europe, South America, Asia and the Middle East. Within a year or two, international revenue became a major portion of Chyron’s income, all due to Jim’s efforts. Jim always took the time to learn about the history of where he was headed, take in the sights and enjoy wherever he was. He worked closely on developing foreign language capabilities for the Chyron systems. Since he did not understand any of the languages, it was an interesting challenge, but Jimmy’s insight and thoughtfulness helped the company through some frustrating issues. In the end, it turned into a very successful product for Chyron. After Chyron, Jim joined NBC, where he worked on many projects and challenges. He set the philosophy and approach to NBC’s new on-air operations. In 1996, the idea was mostly a dream. But Jim had the insight to understand that changing the process was as important, if not more so, than changing the technology. It placed NBC ahead of its competitors by almost a decade. His counsel, advice and guidance on everything from technology to management, were highly valued and sought after. He remained physically and intellectually active until the end of his life. He was an immensely capable, warm, articulate man with an endless reserve of humor, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A religious service was celebrated at St. Patrick’s R.C.
