Provence & the French Riviera October 6, 2014: Departure Depart today on your overnight flight to Toulouse, France. October 7: Toulouse | Carcassonne You are met at the Toulouse Airport by your local expert tour manager and guide. Travel the short distance to Carcassonne, where your first impression will be the imposing medieval stone walls and turrets; a fantastic reconstruction from the ancient kingdom of Aragon. Medieval troubadours, small bands of traveling musicians, originated in this area and frequented this city. Take a guided stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets and visit Basilique Saint Nazaire where you will have Mass before checking in at the hotel. Take time to relax and freshen up before enjoying a welcome dinner in the hotel restaurant. (Mercure Carcassonne Porte de la Cite Hotel) B/D October 8: Carcassonne | Avignon | Aix-en-Provence Check out of the hotel and travel into the region of Provence. Our first stop today is at the Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct and bridge, the highest and best preserved in France. Continue to Avignon, one of the most fascinating cities in France with a history that dates back centuries. It became a central focus of religious activity and was known as the “city of popes.” Visit the famous Palace of the Popes, home to the Papacy during a 15th century schism in Catholic theology. Have Mass and then time for lunch on the Place de l'Horloge near the Hôtel de Ville (city hall) and the Opera d'Avignon. There are many lovely cafes and restaurants in this vibrant area. Continue to Aix-en-Provence, capital of the region, where you check in at your centrally located hotel and enjoy dinner in a local brasserie. (Hotel Aquabella) B/D Your Tour Includes • 8 Nights Accommodation in 4 star hotels Carcassonne-1 night Aix en Provence-4 nights Nice- 3 nights • Buffet breakfast daily • Four dinners and one lunch • Sightseeing included in the itinerary • Luxury coach & professional driver • Professional local tour guide throughout • Porterage of luggage October 9: Abbey Senanque | Gordes | Aix-en-Provence The day begins with a short drive into the beautiful Provencal countryside to the Abbey of Senanque. The abbey was founded in 1148 by 12 monks and flourished through the 13th and 14th centuries. Enjoy Mass at the abbey where it may be possible to hear the Gregorian chant echo through the barrel-vaulted church. Later, visit the hilltown of Gordes, one of the most scenic hilltop villages in France. Enjoy an included group lunch in one of Gordes restaurants that overlooks the beautiful city walls. Lastly, check out the antiques and Provencal market of L’Isle- sur-la Sorgue. The historic center is a maze of narrow alleyways with interesting shops for exploring or buying unique regional items. Return to Aix with the evening free. B/L October 10: Arles | Aix-en-Provence Travel to Arles on the banks of the Rhone River. See the famous Roman amphitheater, built in 90 AD for gladiator fights and animal hunts. Nearby is the necropolis and the thermal baths of Constantine. Exploring further, notice that the narrow streets of Arles are truly medieval in character, winding between ancient buildings and houses. Vincent Van Gogh captured many scenes on canvas and we’ll visit his workshop. Have time for lunch and souvenir shopping before returning to Aix with the evening free. B October 11: Cassis | Aix en Provence After breakfast depart for Cassis, an ancient fishing port on the Mediterranean. A walk through the old village streets reveals some old pastel colored buildings dating back to the 16th century. Enjoy the picturesque harbor with small fishing boats and luxury yachts. Take a short journey by boat on the Mediterranean to see the calanques--fjord-like inlets formed in the rocky cliffs along the coastline. Have time for souvenir shopping and lunch in this picturesque fishing village. Return to Aix-en-Provence with an opportunity to visit the workshop of the October 6-15, 2014 famous painter, Paul Cézanne (1839 – 1906) who was born in Aix-en-Provence. Enjoy afternoon Mass in the Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur d'Aix with the balance of the evening free. B October 12: Aix-en-Provence | Moustiers | Grasse | Nice Leave Aix-en-Provence today for a scenic journey to Nice. Our first stop is in Moustiers- Sainte-Marie, which sits below a narrow notch at the base of rocky cliffs. Above the village, the Notre-Dame de Beauvoir chapel sits high in the notch, behind the ruins of the ancient defensive walls, and hidden in the shadows for most of the day. Enjoy Mass here before exploring the town. The main attraction of Moustiers is the beautiful, "faience" ceramics found in many fine shops. Continue with a scenic drive through the stunning Gorges du Verdon, Europe’s largest canyon. Stop in Grasse with time for lunch and visit a local perfumery. Our final destination today is Nice, a gem on the French Riviera, with its palm tree lined Promenade des Anglais. Check in at the hotel and enjoy a group dinner after a busy day. Postcard-pretty Cimiez is home to the Musée Matisse and Musée National Marc Chagall, while the suburb's Roman amphitheater provides an idyllic backdrop to Nice's annual summertime Jazz Festival. Mass will be in the Basilique-Cathédrale Sainte-Marie et Sainte-Réparate de Nice. Enjoy afternoon souvenir shopping and find a trendy seaside restaurant for dinner. B October 14: Monaco | Nice Take a day excursion from Nice to glitzy Monaco by train.
