NOVEMBER 2014 | SCHNEIDER EXTRA MILE 3 GLAD TO BE WITH YOU IN OUR INTERMODAL BUSINESS! – KUDOS GLAD TO BE WITH YOU IN OUR INTERMODAL BUSINESS! By Paul Simmons, Intermodal Services, [email protected], 800-558-6767, Ext. 592-7817 Greetings from Green Bay to all of our Intermodal drivers. I would like to introduce myself to each of you. My name is Paul Simmons and I recently moved to Intermodal to lead Operations. I have been with Schneider for over 23 years and most recently had accountability for Van Truckload’s Team Expedited and Western Division. Let me begin by thanking each of you for the work that you do every day. As a professional driver, you do a great job living out our number one core value of Safety First and Always. You play a critical role in supporting our customers and you represent our organization well. My role in leading the Operations team for Intermodal is to enable your success. I plan to do this by working with you to: • Maximize your productivity • Keep your equipment well maintained • Ensure we communicate in an open and honest manner • Provide you with training and the support you need What I ask of each of you: • Be safe – do not take short cuts; always get out and look • Remember that you are the professional driver • Stay off your cell phone while operating your vehicle • Be available for work as your schedule calls for • Communicate; provide feedback, ideas and ask for help As we move into the fourth quarter, we are expecting volumes to increase. This is an opportunity to maximize your earnings and end the year strong. Freight will be plentiful and we will be asking you to work an extra day a week during certain weeks. I ask that you take advantage of this opportunity and help put together a win-win situation: More earnings for you, and help our customers move their critical freight. Fourth quarter will bring shorter days and inclement weather. Be prepared for both. Get your rest. Have proper clothing with you. Review and refresh your awareness of winter operating tips. I am excited to be part of Intermodal and look forward to meeting and working with each of you. My objective is to build on the great foundation that has been built over the history of this company and of Intermodal. We will achieve our goals through a constructive culture that is built on communication and strong relationships between you and your fleet manager, you and your operations manager as well as you and me. Thanks for all you do each and every day. Please stay safe; I look forward to working with each of you. More earnings for you, and help our customers move their critical freight. SCHNEIDER EXTRA MILE | NOVEMBER 2014 EVERYONE GETS KUDOS THIS TIME! I just want to say you have the best drivers on the road. All of the other semis that come through our county do not obey the speed limit signs, and carelessly cross into other lanes. Every one of your drivers who come through Ballard County, KY always follow safe driving rules. I just wanted to give them some praise because I know bad drivers give good ones a bad name. Good job and a pat on the back. God bless all of your drivers. Missy Butler La Center, KY I would like to compliment Sch neider on your very professional staff of drivers. We live very close to US19 in Zeli enople, PA and your orange trucks pass by our house on a regular basis. Big rigs can make a lot of nois e, but your drivers are so considerate that their lack of noise has become notable. “There goes Orange” has become a frequent comment in our house and it is always accompanied with a smile. We wave when they drive by which probably just confuses them, but it’s our way of saying thank you – it’s appreciated! Amy Daning Zelienople, PA I met Joe when he first joined our Dedicated Family Dollar account in Ashley, IN early last year. Joe made an impression on me with his “can-do” attitude. At the time Joe started, he was a fairly heavy man. Then, it seemed like every couple of weeks when I’d see him he had shed more weight. His weight became a recurring topic of our conversations. Joe was so excited about the weight loss, he actually embraced the physical activity required to do hand-unloads on the Family Dollar account (it takes a special kind of driver to embrace this work). Joe and I stay in frequent contact and he is working to progress in his own career and become a Training Engineer. One day last month, Joe and I were discussing his career, and I pointed out the opportunity he has as a TE to make a positive impact on other drivers. His positive attitude and strong work ethic set the standard other drivers should strive to achieve. I also told him his success losing weight is a great accomplishment and a story that others should hear. I asked Joe if he would be willing to write an Extra Mile article telling his story. It was no surprise to me when Joe jumped at the chance. So here it is in his own words: Nate Borchert, Dedicated Operations Hello, my name is Joseph Werth. I currently work on the Family Dollar Dedicated account in Ashley, IN. Before coming to Schneider, I was an over-the-road driver for another trucking company. At that time, I weighed 465 pounds and was contending with hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes. All in all, I was taking six different medications for health issues. I took steps to achieve weight loss. I began walking daily. After a few months, I was walking up to 10 miles a day and had lost nearly 200 pounds. When I was hired on the Family Dollar Dedicated account in the spring of 2013, I had leveled out at 275 pounds and was struggling to lose weight and keep a positive attitude. In the last year, through the physical exercise I get unloading Family Dollar loads while maintaining that positive attitude and perseverance, I got my weight down to 185 pounds and a 31-inch waist. My health issues have disappeared and I no longer take medications. My diabetes is gone and my hypertension is completely under control. I’ve never felt better. DEDICATED TO HEALTH, DEDICATED TO DEDICATED DEDICATED TO HEALTH, DEDICATED TO DEDICATED For the first six months on this account, I dealt with fatigue, feeling tired every day. I began talking to a nutritionist about the proper diet for my body makeup and the work I am doing. The result of getting proper nutrition is that my fatigue has vanished and my mental and physical energy are at a high level. In the past year I have had my ups and downs, but I keep my head up and maintain a positive attitude through the support in the office staff. Through my hard work, I am now a mentor (part of the Mentor Value Program (MVP) on my account with the goal of becoming a Training Engineer for Schneider. Joe Before I am finding a steady paycheck with good money every week. It’s a solid income for me. I enjoy working this Dedicated account and with everybody here. Every day is new and a challenge, which is what I like. I have plans to start a family and stay with this account. If this is something you might be interested in, I challenge you to come join this account. It can be very rewarding with good health and income. I feel I have proven that, but I still have a long way to go. Sincerely, Joseph Werth Family Dollar Dedicated account company driver Joe After NOVEMBER 2014 | SCHNEIDER EXTRA MILE 5 TRUCKLOAD CELEBRATES NATIONAL DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK 6 TRUCKLOAD CELEBRATES NATIONAL DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK SCHNEIDER EXTRA MILE | NOVEMBER 2014 Some leaders got slower “pours” than others. SCHNEIDER LEADERS TAKE ON THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE! 7 HELP US HIT A MILLION DOLLARS IN PAYOUTS TO YOU! – TIPS TO GET MORE DRIVER REFERRALS HELP US HIT A MILLION DOLLARS IN PAYOUTS TO YOU! By Jay Komis, Driver Recruiting, [email protected], 800-558-6767, Ext. 592-6143 So far this year, we have paid out more than $650,000 dollars to company drivers and independent contractors for successfully referring safe, great drivers and ICs! We are proud to announce this quarter’s Referral Prize winners! Keep up the great work — make some cash for yourself, get entered into the quarterly prize drawings, and help us continue to have the greatest drivers on the road! Nita Suber presents the iPad to Sherry Cole at Charlotte TIPS TO GET MORE DRIVER REFERRALS By Stephen Anderson, Corporate Marketing, [email protected] You probably already know you can get a referral bonus of at least $1,000 for every driver you refer to Schneider, but how can you maximize the number of your referrals? Team driver Dennis Mitchell has only been with Schneider a few months, but his approach is already paying off with a large, growing number of successful referrals. Here’s his advice: 1. Make the most of your connections. Dennis retired from a highly decorated 23-year career in the Army, and he’s shared Schneider’s military-friendly opportunities with many of his connections. 2. Use social media and online trucking forums. Dennis spends time interacting online with other drivers, especially on thetruckersreport.com forum. That’s also where he read driver opinions that led him to Schneider. 3. Talk to drivers at truck stops. Dennis doesn’t spend much time at truck stops, but he makes himself inviting when he is there and interacts with drivers who he knows work for companies that don’t treat drivers right or pay well. He always has business cards on hand with his contact info. 4. Be there for the people you refer. This has been key for Dennis: “Once they’re with Schneider, I stay with them. When they hit the road, I actually take them under my wing.” It’s your turn to rack up your referral bonuses: Company driver associates 1. Find the referral link and follow those steps By Shannon Schick, Bulk Services, [email protected], 800-558-6767-5048 Some questions have come up around tanker endorsements and when they are required due to recent Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA) changes. Hopefully the following will help clarify the tank endorsement requirements: • The tanker endorsement is separate from the hazmat endorsement; but focuses on just hazardous materials shipments. The reason behind the tanker endorsement is the inherent risk of sloshing liquid in large containers with rollovers. Even water could be subject to the tanker endorsement. • The tanker endorsement is focused on liquids and compressed gases, not solids. • You have to meet two requirements in order for a tanker endorsement to be required: 1. Each package must be considered a bulk package to be subject to the tanker endorsement. A bulk package must have a rated capacity of 119 liquid gallons or more. It does not have to be full, just the capability of holding 119 gallons. 2. The total combined rated capacity among all bulk packages must be greater than 1,000 gallons (not to be confused with the 1,000 pound rule you sometimes hear about with certain types of hazmat). EXAMPLES: Question: You have 50 drums of water on board the trailer and each drum has a capacity of 55 gallons. Is the tanker endorsement required? Answer: No. It does exceed the 1,000 gallon combined capacity (50 x 55 gallon = 2,750 gallons) among all the pack ages, but each package was only 55 gallons and did not meet the definition of a bulk package over 119 gallons. Question: You have one IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) with a capacity of 500 gallons on board and 20 drums with a capacity of 55 gallons. Is the tanker endorsement required? Answer: No. Only one package on board (1 IBC) meets the definition of a bulk package. Since it is only one package at 500 gallons, it does not exceed the 1,000 gallon threshold triggering the tank endorsement. However, if you had two of those IBCs, it would have triggered the requirement. NOVEMBER 2014 | SCHNEIDER EXTRA MILE TANKER ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENTS – FMCSA CURRENT STANDARDS TANKER ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENTS – FMCSA CURRENT STANDARDS 9 WELLNESS MATTERS – ARE YOU READY TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF? WELLNESS MATTERS By Christine Schneider, Occupational Health and Wellness, [email protected] From time to time, I get letters or emails from drivers who have had great success finding ways to be healthy on the road. What follows is a letter from a spouse. We are all influenced by those around us. It’s clear to see that when Tom decided he needed to make a change, he had Cheryl’s full support and assistance to make it happen. Who is your support system? The person standing by your side to make good choices and cheer on your success? It could be family, friends, another group of drivers, your leader — anyone! ARE YOU READY TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF? By Cheryl Swayne, married to Tom Swayne, Dedicated driver associate Tom started with Schneider in March, 2013 driving on a Dedicated team account. His route is from Topeka, Kansas to Denver, Colorado delivering for The Home Depot. When Tom started driving for Schneider, he was 10 years into a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis. I was with him during his first visit with the endocrinologist. It was difficult watching him work through the denial, grief, anger and finally, acceptance of this diagnosis. Once he accepted the diagnosis, he was 100 percent onboard. He changed his diet, exercised, and took his medications faithfully. Tom isn’t one to give up. He began to exercise for longer periods of time and with more intensity. His main “go-tos” for exercise are riding a bicycle for 15 to 20 miles and lifting weights. He was fit enough to compete in an Adventure Race that consisted of paddling a canoe for a mile, a five-mile orienteering hike and a 15-mile mountain bike ride. Though he is a poster child for a person with Type 2 Diabetes, we both had to sit down and create a plan that would keep him healthy as a truck driver. During his first year with Schneider, he drove solo on a national route, three weeks out, three days home. During that time, Tom packed his bicycle and rode it every chance he could. If the bike was not practical, he walked. He knew he could only go to the gym twice a month, so movement and a body in motion became his priority. It didn’t matter if it was five minutes or five miles, he got out of the truck and moved. Food is a huge issue for Tom. As a diabetic, he needs to eat the right food at the right time. We put our heads together and came up with a meal plan that was half-vegan and half homemade diabetic-approved food. 10 SCHNEIDER EXTRA MILE | NOVEMBER 2014 When Tom was due home, I would prepare three weeks worth of meals and place them in aluminum foil small bread loaf pans and freeze them. The meals were designed to be 1/4 meat, 1/4 complex carbohydrates and 1/2 vegetables. The day he was due to roll out again, we would spend an hour in the kitchen cleaning and cutting up raw vegetables and placing them in green bags to keep them fresh longer. This is the vegan part of his diet. He eats vegan for breakfast and lunch, then use his “oven” to heat up the meal I prepared for his supper. In the first six months that Tom drove for Schneider, he lost 60 pounds and no longer has to take medication to control his diabetes. He is now home two days a week on his Dedicated account. We’ve made a few small changes to keep him fit and healthy. We gave up the membership to the gym and used the money to purchase a fitness machine for aerobic exercise and a Bowflex for resistance training. This allows Tom to workout, no matter what time he gets home. He doesn’t have to drive to the gym or wait for the gym to be open. I don’t cook and freeze meals anymore, as Tom isn’t gone as many days in a row now. I scout the clearance isles in the grocery stores for items he likes, but he preps his own meals for the week now. While the vegan foods are his staple, he does treat himself to a truck stop hot dog once in awhile. Tom is fortunate to have family that thinks of him as part of a team. However, it is his inner drive to stay healthy. If he didn’t have the will and dedication to take care of himself, it wouldn’t matter what I did to help him out. If you are ready to take care of yourself, you will find a way to do it. Congratulations to all driver and warehouse associates who celebrated milestone anniversaries in October! Please note that due to system information availability, anniversaries are usually from the month before the date of this Extra Mile issue.
