EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT (M) 125min
A breathtaking cinematic odyssey
through the Amazon, following the
quests of two European explorers
(in 1909 and 1940s) in search of a
rare flower alleged to have healing
properties. It grips with suspense
and revelation as it meditates
on both the beauty of nature and the devastating impact
of colonial interference on native culture. The spectacular
black and white cinematography and sound design combine
to depict the landscapes and characters with an hypnotic,
mythical sense of wonder which demands to be experienced
on the big-screen. Dir Ciro Guerra, Colombia/ Venezuela/
Argentina. Subtitled in English. August 26, 27, 28, Sept 2, 4
MILES AHEAD (M) 100min
Don Cheadle’s remarkable portrait
of Miles Davis is refracted through
his drug-addled days in the late
70s. In his Manhattan apartment, in
pain from a variety of ailments and
desperate for the next cheque from
his record company, he is haunted
by memories of old glories, humiliations and of his great love
Frances Taylor. When a shady would-be journalist posing as a
Rolling Stone reporter (Ewan McGregor) cons his way into his
apartment, they take off to steal back tapes of Davis’ most
recent work from record producers. A wild portrait of one of
the most important figures in jazz history. Dir Don Cheadle,
USA. August 26, 27, 28, 29, Sept 2, 3, 4, 5
LOVE & FRIENDSHIP (PG) 93min
In this quick, clever and very funny
adaptation of an unfinished Jane
Austen novella, beautiful widow
Lady Susan Vernon visits the estate
of her in-laws to wait out colourful
rumours about her dalliances
circulating through polite society.
There she decides to secure a husband for herself and a
future for her eligible but reluctant daughter. In doing so she
attracts the simultaneous attentions of the young, handsome
Reginald DeCourcy, the rich and silly Sir James Martin
and the divinely handsome, but married, Lord Manwaring,
complicating matters severely. Stars Kate Beckinsale, Chloë
Sevigny and Stephen Fry. Dir Whit Stillman, UK. Sept 2, 3, 4, 5

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING
A unique one night only cinema event, this will be the first ever opportunity anyone will
have to hear Skeleton Tree, the sixteenth studio album from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
The film will screen in cinemas worldwide on September 8, immediately prior to the
release of Skeleton Tree the following day. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed
performance of the album are interviews and footage accompanied by Cave’s narration
and improvised rumination. Filmed in black-and-white and colour, the result is fragile,
raw and a true testament to an artist trying to find his way through the darkness.
Tickets Adults $20 / Conc & Members $15. Bookings essential. No Free Tickets
