Donning a crown of lighted candles, she sings about the darkness of winter and the light about to return. With this song, she awakens her family. This is a scene repeated in thousands of homes throughout Sweden. The girl is usually the oldest daughter of the house, and after she wakes her family, she serves them coffee and saffron-flavored rolls. Whatever her name, both she and the day are known as Lucia. Later, the ceremony will be repeated at offices and workplaces throughout the country, with young women as Lucias. Lucia is a hybrid of medieval Swedish and postReformation German traditions, and it marks the beginning of the Christmas period -- the defining feature of the Swedish winter. It is at this time that the greatest smörgåsbord appear, with the most lavish on Christmas Eve. The feast will probably include herring and pickled beets, salmon, small meatballs, sausages, liver pate, and seasonal specialties such as browned cabbage and lutefish. The centerpiece of the meal is a generally a large ham, and ris a'la malta for dessert. Unlike Christmas Eve, New Years Eve is a time when Swedes go out and splurge at a fine restaurant. After dinner, the restaurants empty out and the streets, bars and clubs fill up. The evening culminates outside, with the flash and boom of fireworks. Winter is also a time when the country takes to the ski slopes. The long winter creates ideal ski conditions from November to May, with midnight sun shining in Lapland until mid-June. Sweden is one of the few places in the world where resorts actually guarantee snow ahead of time. No snow, and you get your money back. Given such reliable conditions, it is no wonder that winter activities here have evolved into such varied pursuits as snowboarding, parascending, paragliding, snow-scooter and dog-sled and reindeer safaris, ice-surfing, yachting, and ice-climbing. http://www.geographia.com/sweden/winter.html Desert Viking Views September-Decembert2012.1; E-Mail: [email protected] 1 of 18 DESERT VIKING LODGE NO. 682 Founded in 1967 with 46 Charter Members as a Local Lodge (LL) of Vasa Order of America (VOA) under District Lodge No. 15 Pacific Southwest (DL). Time Travelers…… Marilyn Vik works at Sunshine Travel in Palm Desert, she can help you with your travel needs. Arne Ljunggren, 85, of Palm Desert passed away Friday July 27, 2012 in his home. He was born Sept 26, 1926 in Boras, Sweden. He is survived by his niece Eva Bergstrand and her family. He is preceded in death by his parents Ingrid and Helge and his older brother Lars. In his early 20's Arne served in the Swedish Navy as a photographer where he was stationed on the cruiser Fylgia that visited North African ports. His taste for travel and adventure along with his proficiency in Lithography enabled him to live in New Zealand, Australia, and finally the United States. In the United States Arne first lived in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Later he moved to the west coast settling in the LA area where he was a salesman for Kodak, finally retiring in Palm Desert. Arne was a very giving person and always took the time to help others. He liked to volunteer and was past president of the Swedish Hollywood Club and more recently a member of the Vasa/Desert Vikings Club. Arne was a fun and exciting person to be around and people were drawn to him by his charm, wonderful laugh and positive attitude. He loved life and had a passion for entertaining, and hosting parties where he could be found telling jokes, laughing, and leading others in song. He will be remembered as an uncomplicated soul who loved the simple things in life and one who was always generous with praise. He had a good word for everyone and tried to put the best light on every situation. We fondly remember his stories, his beautiful voice, but most of all his company. Thank you for all the happy memories. Teddy bears The Swedish parliament recently voted down a proposal for a ban. No ban for cell phones while driving While most European countries ban the use of handheld cell phones while driving, the resistance to do so in Sweden is strong. So strong in fact, that the parliament voted down the Green Party politician Karin Svensson Smith’s proposal for a ban, with alarming numbers: 267 to 17. The majority of the parliament argues there isn’t enough research on the combination of cell phones and road safety. There’s also the question of how such a ban would be monitored. Notable for their eclectic musical style as much as for wearing large bear heads, Teddybears were formed in Sweden in the early '90s. Although the group -whose members also direct videos, short films, and commercials -- takes on a variety of genres including electronic, dance, rock, and reggae, Teddybears' original incarnation was as a grindcore band. Members Patrik Arve and Joakim Åhlund (who is also guitarist for the Caesars) had met in art school in Stockholm, soon adding Åhlund's brother Klas on guitar. In defiance of typical grindcore band names, the group switched its first name, Skull, to Teddybears, named after a band from the '50s featuring Phil Spector. After Teddybears' drummer left, the other members relied upon drum machines, guitars, and vocoders. The result was the electronicleaning Rock 'n' Roll Highschool in 2000, followed by Fresh in 2005. Signing on with Atlantic, the band's first U.S. release, Soft Machine, came out in September 2006 and featured guests Iggy Pop, Annie, Neneh Cherry, Mad Cobra, and Ebbot Lundberg of the Soundtrack of Our Lives. Alla Helgons Dag November 3, 2012 Cookie Walk; Bishop Hill, IL November The Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association annual Cookie Walk is a highlight of the Julmarknad activities held each year the days following Thanksgiving. Courtesy: Swedish Council of America The Saturday between October 31 and November 6 is Alla Helgons Dag in Sweden. It wasn't until the 1950s that this old Roman Catholic holiday co-opted from an ancient Norther Pagan holiday was reintroduced into the Swedish calendar. One of the eight major solar holidays, it marks the half-way point between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice. It is also the first day of winter in the old calendars. This is just one of the fund raising projects put on by the oldest organization in Bishop Hill village. The Old Settlers’ are responsible for the preservation and maintenance of the Colony School, and to showcase the historic brick schoolhouse on the end of Bishop Hill’s Main Street. When you enter the Colony School your eyes will feast on a wide assortment of delectable home baked cookies and candy. These are displayed to entice their purchase by the pound. And the best part is you choose from among the decorated delectable dozens and dozens of cookies. These days it is often celebrated with first attending a concert in the local church followed by a time of remembrance of one's loved ones who have passed away. Family grave sites are visited after dark and luminaria are lit. The whole affect is lovely and moving. You’ll also be able to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or spiced cider. Won’t you treat yourself to a sweet experience and join us for a Cookie Walk? Bishop Hill Visitors Guide * 2010 Edition Leif Erickson Day USA October 9, 2012 Leif Erikson day is a holiday in the United States commemorating the Norse explorer's landing on North American soil. In 1964, the United States congress authorized and requested the President to create the observance through a yearly procamation. Leif Erikson day has been observed in the United States every year since the Johnson administration. Leif Erikson was the first European to set foot in the new world, doing so in 1001 A.D. He was the son of Erik the Red, the famous Icelandic Viking. When Erik the Red was banished from Iceland, Leif sailed west with him, and became a first-class sailor. Once a sleepy little village made up primarily of Swedish immigrants, Andersonville is now one of Chicago's most popular north side neighborhoods. The community is particularly known for its diversity, including a continued Swedish cultural presence led by the Swedish American Museum, the Swedish Bakery and other Swedish delicatessens.[3] A significant number of Middle-Eastern businesses, a new influx of families with children, and a large lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender (LGBT) population all make this a very diverse population. Andersonville is also known for its unique commercial district, made up almost entirely of a variety of independent locally owned specialty shops, restaurants, and service providers. Andersonville does, however, have a growing number of nationally known chains including a Starbucks Coffee, McDonald's, Hair Cuttery, The UPS Store, a Subway sandwich shop and a recently opened Potbelly Sandwich Shop. Edgewater Houses Andersonville's roots as a community extend well back into the 19th century, when immigrant Swedish farmers started moving north into what was then a distant suburb of Chicago. In the 1850s the area north of Foster and east of Clark was a large cherry orchard, and families had only begun to move into the fringes of what is now Andersonville. The neighborhood's first school, the Andersonville School, was built in 1854 at the corner of those two thoroughfares, and served as the area's primary school until 1908. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, wooden homes were outlawed in Chicago. Swedish immigrants, who could not afford to build homes of stone or brick, began to move outside of the city's northern limits. Swedish immigrants continued to arrive in Andersonville through the beginning of the 20th century, settling in the newly built homes surrounding Clark Street. Before long, the entire commercial strip was dominated by Swedish businesses, from delis to hardware stores, shoe stores to blacksmiths, and bakeries to realty companies. The local churches, such as Ebenezer Lutheran Church and First Evangelical Free Church were also built by Swedes, and reflected the religious diversity of the new arrivals. Like most other European-American ethnic groups, Swedes began to move to the suburbs during the Depression and postwar periods, and the neighborhood began to decline. Concerned about the deteriorating commercial situation, the Uptown Clark Street Business Association renewed its commitment to its Swedish heritage by renaming itself the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce. On October 17, 1964 Andersonville was rededicated in a ceremony attended by Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley and Illinois Governor Otto Kerner. At about the same time, the annual Swedish tradition of celebrating the summer solstice blossomed into Midsommarfest, which has since grown into one of Chicago's largest and most popular street festivals. The Saint Ita Catholic Church bell tower, on Broadway, has long been used by community residents and businesses as the symbol of Edgewater on signage and other media. While some of the Swedish-owned businesses gave way to stores and restaurants owned by Koreans, Lebanese, and Cuban, many remained in Andersonville, serving the remaining second- and third-generation Swedes as well as the new arrivals to the neighborhood. In 1976, a Swedish American Museum that had been on the drawing boards for fifty years was opened to the public in a ceremony attended by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. He was also present when it later moved into larger quarters at 5211 N. Clark, where it remains today. Today, in addition to being one of the most concentrated areas of Swedish culture in the United States, Andersonville is home to a diverse assortment of devoted residents and businesses, including one of Chicago's largest gay and lesbian communities, a large collection of Middle Eastern restaurants and bakeries, and a thriving Hispanic commercial area north of Catalpa Avenue. Andersonville is one of Chicago's thriving neighborhoods. It also enjoys nationwide renown for its unique commercial district. 12 of 18 DesertVikingViewsSept-December; llk; 04/2012 LUCIA PROGRAM 2012 Desert Viking Lodge #682 Lucia program on 12/2/2012 has been cancelled at Hope Lutheran Church.
