The Man on the Web: Online Intergroup of A.A.
Excited about today’s expanding ability to reach out to
suffering alcoholics, A.A. members around the world
continue finding new ways to carry A.A.’s message of hope.
“Today’s counterpart to the ‘man on the bed’ is the trembling, sick alcoholic
in cyber-space,” writes Dennis M. of the Bronx, N.Y. in a Grapevine article
titled AA in Cyberspace. “And we see a good number of them looking for
help for the first time. We see them coming back from slips; we see them
finding A.A. at a time and a place where we can feel their desperation and
share our hope, just as we do in f2f (face-to-face) meetings.” One helpful
development in this effort has been the growth of the Online Intergroup of
A.A. (O.I.A.A.), an organization nearing its 20th anniversary. First formed to
help unify the growing number of online meetings that began to mushroom
in the late 1980s, many starting as bulletin board meetings and email groups,
the O.I.A.A. was legally incorporated in 1996, giving online groups a forum
for exchanging information and ideas and for helping one another carry the
message of A.A. online. Online meetings come in a variety of formats: realtime chat, email meetings, telephone chats, audio-visual meetings using
video streaming applications, message boards/forums, and discussion board
meetings. Some are targeted toward specific groups: women, military,
deaf/hard-of-hearing, and there are meetings available in a number of
languages. Many have regular schedules, and some are “catch-as-catch-can,”
with members posting when there is time and a burning desire. Many A.A.
members use the online medium to supplement their f2f meetings or viceversa, depending on each member’s own situation, and most online groups
encourage attendance at f2f meetings. There are many A.A.s, however, who
cannot attend f2f meetings (geographically isolated members, members with
physical disabilities, members living in a foreign country, members in the
military or at sea, older A.A.s, shift workers, parents with young children) and
online A.A. may be the best or only resource available to allow these
members to participate fully in the A.A. Fellowship. One of O.I.A.A.’s chief
services is an online meeting directory posting an up-to-date list of online
A.A. groups on its website (www.aa-intergroup.org). On average, the
directory lists about 170 groups. It also directs an estimated 2,600 online
visitors a month from more than 100 countries to meetings held in 14
languages and to meetings with formats that make A.A. accessible to people
with vision, speech, or hearing problems. A little more than half of O.I.A.A.’s
visitors access their information on mobile devices (phones or tablets), with
others using desktop computers. O.I.A.A.’s directory does not include every
A.A. group in cyber-space, however — only those that choose to be listed
and subscribe to the Twelve Traditions of A.A. Keenly aware that “personal
recovery depends upon A.A. unity,” as the First Tradition says, O.I.A.A. also
encourages communication among online groups as well as with local
intergroups, areas, G.S.O., and other A.A. service bodies. This is done chiefly
through the work of its committees. In addition to a Twelfth Step Committee,
which is comprised of approximately 40 members worldwide, speaking
multiple languages and fielding between 350-400 requests for help per
month,

A.A. Teleservice Needs YOU!!
Alcoholics Anonymous Teleservice, also known as the A.A.
hotline, services alcoholics who are in need of help. We help them
to locate meetings in their area or provide them with someone to talk to
in times of crisis.
This is a great way to be of service to your fellow alcoholics. All
you need is the use of a phone and a current meeting schedule.
From the comfort of your own home on a landline telephone or even
while you’re out and about with the use of a cell phone you can be of
service.
We would love to have you join our team. If you have at least six
(6) months of sobriety and would like to be of service please contact
Central Office at 916-454-1771 or email: [email protected]

God’s Boxes
Pain is a Gift
Three days ago I removed and replaced the battery in
my wife’s car. For the past two mornings I have been
getting up with a sore back and experiencing
reminders during the day. This news flash from my
body is a gift to me – I interpret it to mean this is one
more thing that this 8o year old man should not
engage in on a regular basis.
My focus is on the pain we bring to ourself, pain that
is a result of our own fallible decision thinking and
making.
I sought to the softer easier way in all things, when I
was younger.
I followed that path through many misunderstandings,
personal
crises,
destroyed
occupational
opportunities,
broken
relationships,
shattered
dreams,
unfulfilled
promises, and
personal
disappointments. Thank God for the gift of pain that
leads to the moment of desperation when we become
totally willing to change! Change the way we think.
Change the way we act and change the way we feel!
My point is that pain is the great motivator of
change. Instead of avoiding pain this is an opportunity
for us to examine it, to learn from it. Pain generates an
internal force strong enough to overcome the choice
that appeared to be softer and less strenuous. I see
those life disappointments as opportunities to develop
my spiritual life. When depressed my temptation may
be to wallow in maudlin melancholy but for me this is
time to be “captain of my own ship, master of my
destiny!” .
I love AA , I love the emphasis on becoming aware of
my motivations, taking action, assuming responsibility
for myself and my actions, to be available to those I
can help and responsible to the alcoholic that reaches
out to me.
God bless you!
Robert J.
Thought to Ponder . . .
Self-esteem doesn't need an audience.
I have in my hands two boxes, Which God gave me to
hold.
He said, "Put all your sorrows in the black box, And all
your joys in the gold." I heeded His words, and in the two
boxes, Both my joys and sorrows I stored, But though the
gold became heavier each day, The black was as light as
before. With curiosity, I opened the black,
I wanted to find out why, And I saw, in the base of the box,
a hole, Which my sorrows had fallen out by.
”My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings, the
black is for you to let go." I showed the hole to God, and
mused,
"I wonder where my sorrows could be!" He smiled a gentle
smile and said,
"My child, they're all here with me.." I asked God, why He
gave me the boxes, Why the gold and the black with the
hole?

HALT
Trying to argue yourself out of a drink is rather like
attempting self-hypnosis.
Often, it is about as effective as trying to persuade a
pregnant mare not to foal when her term has come.
For these reasons, then, when we suggest avoiding
fatigue and hunger,
we often tie in a mention of one more hazard to make it
a triple play:
"Don't let yourself get too tired, too hungry, or too
lonely." Check it out.
If the notion of taking a drink crosses your mind any
time soon, pause to consider.
As often as not, you are likely to find you are in one or
more of those three high-risk conditions.

The Second Step
“Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”
What can we believe in? A.A. does not demand belief; Twelve Steps are only suggestions. Importance of an
open mind. Variety of ways to faith. Substitutions of A.A. as Higher Power. Plight of the disillusioned.
Roadblocks of indifference and prejudice. Lost faith found in A.A. Problems of intellectuality and selfsufficiency. Negative and positive thinking. Self-righteousness. Defiance is an outstanding characteristic of
alcoholics. Step Two is a rallying point to sanity. Right relation to God.
--Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, pg.5
The Second Tradition
“for our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority---a loving God as He may express Himself in
our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.”
Where does A.A. get its direction? Sole authority in A.A. is loving God as He may express Himself in the
group conscience. Formation of a group. Growing pains rotating committees are servants of the group.
Leaders do not govern, they serve. Does A.A. have a real leadership? “Elder statesmen” and “bleeding
deacons.” The group conscience speaks.
-- Twelve steps and Twelve Traditions, pg. 9-10
The Second Concept
When , in 1955,the A.A. groups confirmed the permanent charter for their General service Conference, they
thereby delegated to the Conference complete authority for the active maintenance of our world services
and thereby made the Conference --- excepting for any change in the Twelve Traditions or in Article 12 of the
Conference Charter --- the actual voice and the effective conscience for our whole Society.

Planning Not Projection
"As the chaotic world of the drinking alcoholic
is replaced by one of stability in sobriety it
becomes apparent that plans can be made to
encourage positive living. For example:
planning holidays, dental appointments and the
household budget. We cannot plan that it will
be the best holiday ever, that no dental work is
required, or that our monetary fortunes will
remain the same; that would be projecting. We
plan plans, not results."

THE DAY THE LIGHTS CAME ON
Like most of us in AA,I spent years trying to navigate my way through the rough waters of alcoholism thinking
that, someday, everything would come together and I would settle into a life that was normal, but we all know
how absurd that delusion is for an undiagnosed alcoholic. I started drinking in my early teens and never drank
moderately. I always drank for oblivion from the start and I believe it was to cover up emotional damage done
as the result of my unsupervised, misguided, undisciplined behavior. I don't attribute that to anybody's mistreatment of me, but more to my inability to see myself as an equal to those around me. I was used to being the
smallest kid in the presence of my peers and I found myself trying to get my share of attention so I often over
compensated to make up for my low self esteem. I developed habits of dishonesty to make up for my short
falls, and that led to a pattern of life that we in AA
are familiar with.
At the young age of 28, I became desperate
help as nothing I was doing seemed to be workple were there to greet me, and within 2 minutes,
been sober since that day. At the time, I hadn't

realized it, and I was vigilant for a long time

I After 45 years of attending many meetings, over a long period of time, and watching thousands of people
coming and going in the program, with various reasons for being there, and like snowflakes, no two are alike, I
can almost tell when he/she comes to that point when THE LIGHTS COME ON. Seeing that happen, sometimes
after years of struggle, is a touching experience. In my early days I didn't recognize it so much as I was mentally
busy trying to figure out my own solutions, but as I have settled into a life that is, for the most part, peaceful, I
recognize it often and it is a moving experience.
If anyone has ever watched the movie about Helen Keller entitled, The Miracle Worker, about a girl who was
born blind and deaf. She woke up each day in total silence and darkness. Imagine how that would be. In desperation, they brought in a teacher, Anne Sullivan, to help them with this unbearable state of hopelessness. Anne
started working with her to teach her tactile sign language, and at some point, after much frustration, she finally learns her first word, WATER, in the scene at the water pump. To this day, it's the most touching scene I've
ever watched. It's like the Lights came on in her head and it opened up the world of communication for the first
time in her life. That is the way I feel when I see someone in the program crosses over that line of denial and
make that 180% turn. Whenever anybody comes to the program of Alcoholics Anonymous in the state of spiritual darkness, I hope that someone will always be there to help them find the light switch.
Rick. R.
“We are self supporting”
"Our spiritual way of life is safe for future generations if, as a Society, we resist the
temptation to receive money from the outside world. But this leaves us with a responsibility - one that every member ought to understand. We cannot skimp when
the treasurer of our group passes the hat. Our groups, our areas, and AA as a whole
will not function unless our services are sufficient and their bills are paid."

Great Reality Deep Within
I had scooted through the holiday season one long-ago January without a drink for the first time in
memory since teenage years. Even though I had been sober five full months, my gratitude was
overshadowed by fear . . . after enjoying a happy-happy parade on Hollywood Boulevard, I marched
right into a bar on Cherokee Avenue and almost ordered a happy-happy gin & tonic. Thank God I didn’t!
It was definitely one of those strange mental blank spots mentioned on page forty-two of the Big Book.
Terrified, I rushed back to my Santa Monica apartment, fell to my knees, and asked God to save me from
a seemingly impending drunken spree.
What was I doing wrong? I had been

power. But then, Bill W. informs us that we also have a marvelous often unknown protector; he calls it a
“Great Reality deep within”
(p. 55). Dr. Carl Jung called it a God Archetype. For whatever
name, it is much more powerful than the mental obsession, and luckily for we alcoholics, this can be
ours and it can last for a lifetime if we live the AA program of action. Many Januarys have passed since
those days of yore, but the thought of drinking no longer appears in my emotional vocabulary.
Thank you God! ~~ Bob S.

IV. Trusted Servant Reports
A. Chairperson Report – Kathryn C
I would like to thank you all for electing me into this position. I look forward to serving the needs of the Central California Fellowship of
AA. 2015 was our best year yet and we need to continue this momentum by spreading the word about CCF.
Tamera K., 2015 CCF Chairperson, put it best when she said in her first report “We exist solely to support the groups and provide
information to the Alcoholic who is suffering.”
I continue to encourage you to be an active part of CCF and its legacy of service in Northern California. Let us help you provide
information to your members and carry the message to that newcomer.
I am very fortunate to have such a great group of officers, delegates, and trusted servants supporting me as I transition into this new role.
I look forward to serving you in the coming year.
"I am responsible. When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that: I am
responsible." - Al S., 1965 International Convention, Toronto

The online store will be active on or before February 19th.
Fourth quarter sales and payroll tax reports and deposits will be completed by due date: January 28th. Annual payroll reports and
returns will be completed and filed by the due date.
The application for the Sunday, August 21 st 2016 Annual Picnic has been submitted to Elk Grove Park. The CCF Rep from a Roseville
group researched Rush Park as a possibility for a northern area location, but found the site was not suitable for our needs. We will
plan this year’s picnic for the Elk Grove location.
We hope that northern/northeastern area groups who have an interest in having the picnic in their vicinity will come forth and
participate in the planning and site search for the 2017 picnic.
A reminder to groups/meeting with insurance coverage: Your COI (certificate of insurance) will be automatically renewed and you
will be invoiced for the processing fee. New requests for coverage must be in the office by January 29 th. Please email your info or

E. Treasurer’s Report –John R
Through December 2015
Note: This narrative report will covers the 2015 Calendar Year. Focus is on the annual results for 2015. The 2016 budget was approved in
November 2016 and can be discussed with the presentation of January 2016 results at the February meeting.
Income / Expense:
1.
Revenues: AAWS Literature Sales of $81,553 for the year f inished $1,447 less than the annual budget of $83,000. – In-House
publications are also finished the year below budget. In house publications brought in $15,975 instead of the budgeted amount of
$17,600.
2.
The revenue shortfall in those categories however, is more than offset by Medallion Sales, Group Contributions, Office Services
Revenue, Faithful Fivers, Picnic Revenue, and Special Events Revenue (see further down in the report for expenses associated with
Picnic and Special Events). Overall, Total Income (line 14 on the report) for the calendar year is $271,917. The budgeted revenue for
the year was exceeded by $13,801. Group Contributions beat budget by $6,458 which makes up nearly half of this favorable variance.
3.
Cost of Goods Sold: Cost of AAWS Literature Sold reflects the cost of the AAWS Literature sales, and the literature costs were higher
than budgeted by $3,751, This reflects the increase in the price to CCF of literature it buys from GSO; the 2015 budget was prepared
prior to those price increases. This results in Net Income from AAWS Literature being $5,199 less than the $25,700 budget. Total Cost
of Goods Sold of $93,796 for the year compares to the budget of $87,200 for a $(6,596) unfavorable variance – primarily due to the
AAWS Literature price increase. YTD Gross Income (after cost of goods) is $178,120 beat the budget by $7,204. Group Contributions,
Picnic Revenue, and Special Events Revenue were the main drivers for beating the revenue budget.
4.
Expenses: most expenses categories are tracked close to budget. Special Events expense for the year of $5,792 includes costs of the
Hawaii conference raffle prize, and contributed to the $(5,800) variance in Total Other Committees for the year; this is more than
offset by the Special Events revenue at the top of the report. Within the Total Professional Fees, website admin for the year of $2,519
compares to a budget of $3,000. Payroll Expenses were $1,270 over budget for the year and ended at $111,702. The increase w as for
temporary officer workers during a period when clerical staff were on PTO. (Paid Time off) Total Expense for the year of $177,562 is
higher than the budget of $174223 by $3,339.
5.
Bottom line, when we developed the annual budget, we were anticipating a $(3,307 “loss” for t he year. Net Income, however,
ended in positive territory. CCFAA earned a positive result of $558 for the year.
Grateful to be of service, John G.
F. Special Needs Chairperson’s Report – Tricia -Absent
In this first month of the new year, my focus is on reviewing what has been done before by this committee, recruiting members for our
outreach work, and developing a method of communicating that will be efficient, and timely.
A promotional flyer has been developed, and reviewed by Central Office, included in the recent mailing that went out.
I would ask that all of you spread the word, and expand our outreach effort. I’m sure that all of you have friends in the program who are
either in the hospital, chronically ill, recuperating at home, or in rehab facilities, who are unable to get to meetings. Also we need to
remember those who are homebound, caring for a family member with memory loss, or someone with small children, or a new baby who
isn’t able to get to meetings.
In reviewing the service manual, there appears to have been a focus on communicating with the deaf community. I’m pleased to say that
we have two qualified sign interpreters who are willing to assist us as needed.
I will be meeting with Central office to discuss updating this manual, since it is a 2008 edition, and outdated in many areas.
Because everyone’s time is so valuable these days, our committee will communicate via email and conference calling. The goal is to have a
conference call once a month to discuss issues that might have come up, and brainstorm ideas and solutions. We’ll be using Free
Conference Call.com, so there will be no cost to Central Office to use this service, and no charge to participants calling in (check your
phone service on this, just in case).
We will use a phone tree when requests come in, and members of the committee may chose to participate, or not, depending on their
schedule, and will then gather info at the end of the month .
This has been such a valuable resource to me, and I want to do whatever I can to help others who are in need.
Thank you.
Respectfully submitted,
Tricia Casey, Special Needs Chair
