Wow! We could not even begin to imagine the number of players, parents, and families impacted by the Friendship Hockey Exchange. It’s safe to say that John Bieth and Paul Pelland probably could not envision what this program would eventually become. We do know some things for certain—friendships do last forever and the roads between Kitchener and Central PA have been well-traveled. A big Welcome goes out to our new families; do you get IT yet? I don’t know what IT is either, but by the time I hit my first Canadian Parent Social in 2006, I got IT. IT is hard to explain, I remember in the fall of 2005 listening to Jeff Walls at an Lancaster Ice Rink parent in-house meeting describing IT. Like many of us have tried to explain, you just don’t really get IT, until you do IT. Sometime in Canada, you will seek me out and proclaim; “Now I get IT!” In which case, my response will be, “Help me tell other families!” Believing in the program makes you want others to experience IT. The committees, coaches, and managers on both sides of the border poured thousands of hours into making the 40th Anniversary the best year ever! Our wish is for everyone to experience new friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. We also hope to see you next year! John Prime —Yours in Friendship, John Prime USA Chairman www.friendshiphockey.com from the Canada Chairman Forty Years of Friendship and the Tradition Continues… There are several factors that come into play when you organize a program like the Friendship Exchange. It takes a strong group of dedicated coaches, players, parents and committee members. People that believe that when you organize a minor hockey program—Family, Fun, and Friendship are the first three ingredients for success. It is this passion and dedication that makes me proud that I have been associated with this program over the past 24 years. We all work hard fund-raising and making sure our participants get as much out of the program as they can. Four years ago we re-introduced the coaches game back into our program. This time we added a twist that supports our communities and the “Coaches Charity Classic” was born. We have raised over $8,000 for local Children’s Charities. Children’s Wish, Clarkey’s Kids, Kitchener Ice Pirates have all been recipients of the funds we have raised at these games. This year the coaches will be raising funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Please come out and share the Friendship and show our communities that we are more than just another minor hockey program. So “Thank You” for making the 2012 Friendship Exchange a great success. The tradition will continue for as long as there are people that believe in FAMILY, FUN, and FRIENDSHIP. On behalf of the Canadian Committee I invite each and everyone one of you to sit back now that the hard work is complete and enjoy the experience that is the Friendship Exchange. The more you put into it the more you will receive in return. When it is all over, we ask that you keep the tradition alive by sharing your experiences with others. By completing this simple request the Friendship Exchange will experience another great 40 years ahead. A deep-rooted sense of anticipation fills their hearts and a glow of enthusiasm warms the air. Upon arriving at the destination they bolt from our side to find their friends and share their glee. Huddling together while preparing to play or running through the rinks as their siblings compete, their sense of jubilation is contagious. We find the other parents and settle into sharing our lives and expectations for our children. Drawn together by the rink and the great game of Hockey; all are united; sharing moments and memories that will last a lifetime. Over the last 12 years that I have been the President of the Kitchener Minor Hockey Association I have met many people that have participated in this exchange and all of their stories are the same. They meet friends that they will keep for a lifetime. Whether a parent or a participant—the social connections are strong and true with moments that help Tom Graham prepare us for life beyond Hockey. In this the 40th year of the exchange we are proud to President of be part of this amazing tradition and wish all the participants the best possible experience. Kitchener Minor We welcome our friends from Pennsylvania and the ones from home and are happy to share our amazing community. Please enjoy this exceptional opportunity! —Tom Graham Hockey Association from Mayor of Kitchener the Ontario, Canada On behalf of members of council and the citizens of the City of Kitchener, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the Kitchener Minor Hockey Friendship Exchange taking place in Kitchener March 2–5, 2012. Along with your hosts, the Kitchener Minor Hockey Association, we invite each of you, local residents and visitors alike, to enjoy the many attractions and outstanding hospitality our community has to offer. Each of the young athletes participating in this exchange will have an opportunity to showcase their talents and the skills they have worked so hard to perfect this season. I trust the games will be exciting and the spirit of good sportsmanship will be present throughout. Players will have the chance to form lasting friendships and memories. Thank you to all the hard working coaches, administrators, volunteers, friends and family members who have leant their support to the athletes and teams throughout the year. Your commitment to the sport and to healthy youth development is an excellent example for everyone involved. Good luck and enjoy the exchange! —Carl Zehr Carl Zehr Mayor, City of Kitchener Grant Beauchamp— it’s going to be fun, and it’s priceless One Saturday, long ago, after my son’s squirt hockey game, this man comes into the locker room, and in his one-of-a-kind voice, Jeff Walls starts talking about this great program that the Lancaster County Youth Amateur Hockey League is a part of. The Lancaster Kitchener Exchange was in need of squirt players to fill the team and Jeff proceeded to extol the wonderful attributes of the program. The hockey, the fun. The billeting, the fun. The new life-long friends, the fun. The memories, the fun. Several members of that squirt team participated. We’ve hosted many billets in our home. Having three boys participate has meant many new friends filling our home every year. From that first year of using the phone to 8 contact your billet, to using email, to using Facebook and Twitter, the kids today are able to keep in much closer contact than years prior. My most cherished moment so far is one Sunday evening driving over to Avalanche for snow tubing. Having only been there once, I got lost and went way too far on Rt. 30. I was driving a 15 passenger van with two other dads and seven boys. It was a classic Mastercard commercial. Rented van for the weekend, $150. Two hundred dollars registration fee for each son. Seeing seven boys having fallen asleep while leaning on each others shoulders after meeting just 48 hours earlier, priceless! —Grant Beauchamp, past Chairman of Friendship Exchange Friendship Hockey Exchange—2012—the 40th year In the past 39 years... John Bieth was one of the coaches as shown in this undated photo of a Kitchener team that participated in the Friendship Exchange. John Bieth: co-founder of Friendship Exchange I would like to extend my best wishes and congratulations to the players, coaches, parents, and organizing committee in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Friendship Hockey Exchange. When Paul Pelland and I shared stories of coaching hockey on an airplane many years ago in 1971, we never imagined that our conversation would launch the longest-running exchange program of its kind in North America. I want to acknowledge the hard work of the many people in Kitchener and Lancaster who have championed and grown this exchange over the years. On a personal note, I would like to thank Harold Hilsher and Mike Aultman for many years of friendship—you are both ambassadors for minor hockey and for your countries. It has meant a great deal to me that the Friendship Exchange has resulted in boys and girls developing life-long friendships through enjoyment of the game of hockey. I have been privileged to have the opportunity to coach hockey and have my son participate in minor hockey. I now have twin grandsons, who just turned three-years-old. I am looking forward to watching them lace their skates and play hockey for the first time. Have fun and I know that there will be many years of friendship ahead. —John Bieth Co-founder of Friendship Exchange Jeff Walls remembers a magical moment at Niagara Falls To offset what was a very tiring and busy Canadian weekend, I had made the decision to take my team (and others later) to Niagara Falls after school and work Wednesday. This gave us time to bond as a team and to relax in a fun place with plenty to do on our off Thursday. It was snowing most of the day Thursday. Thursday night many of us decided to walk to the Falls to see the spot lights on them. It was also about -70 (Celsius keeping with the metric nature of our favorite 2nd home country) as it frequently is when we cross the border. As we walked along Niagara Parkway towards Horseshoe Falls we passed under the spotlights lighting the falls. The boys had stopped and looked up into the colored lights. With the snow falling it looked like M&M's falling from the sky. I cherish that picture! There are many things to remember from the Exchange but mostly the friends we have made over the years, American and Canadian. We are the luckiest people in the world to have had this opportunity. —Jeff Walls Past Chairman of Exchange for Lancaster “A Hockey Season Lasts a Few Months, A Friendship is Forever.” 9 Harold Hilsher’s Memories A volunteer for the Friendship Exchange and LCYAHL for decades Approximately 1973 or 1974, my sons Barry and Keith Hilsher were skating at the first public ice rink which was located at the newly opened Park City shopping center in Lancaster, Pa. For those who were not around in the early 1970s, the small rink was located approximately where the lower-level food court is located today. The roots of ice hockey in Lancaster county were formed at this tiny rink, and because my two sons were playing ice hockey, I was approached and asked if we wanted to participate in a Hockey Exchange with Kitchener, Ontario—about 500 miles away! My first reaction was “why would anyone drive 500 miles to play hockey? Do I really want to make that journey?” But our family decided to participate, and when we traveled to Kitchener, Barry was billeted with the Strasburgers, and Keith with the Novak family. The players and parents traveled by bus, and as we were just outside of Kitchener on Route 8, suddenly a police car tuned on his flashing lights and forced the bus to pull over. Naturally we were thinking that this is a crappy way to arrive for the Friendship Exchange... But to our surprise, it was all in fun, because instead of a cop boarding our bus, the Kitchener Lone Rangers Ice Hockey Mascot boarded the bus to greet us and make us feel welcome. That first trip was one I’ll never forget, even though 40 years have passed. During that trip we toured the ice hockey stick factory and the Roo Skate Factory. The same, but a little different Of course the majority of Canadians speak English and are very friendly, so it is easy to get to know them—but it is fun to find out some of the differences in customs and language. Some of the memorable things I learned are: you remove your shoes when you enter most Canadian homes; many Canadians end their sentences with “eh”; you hear “eh” so much that you add it to your speech too; a Chesterfield is NOT a cigarette—it’s a sofa; a Coke is really called a "pop." A sad year for the Exchange Memories of the Lancaster Kitchener Ice Hockey Friendship Exchange are usually filled with fun times, new experiences, and new friends—however in 1977 tragedy struck. Many of the US players and families had already arrived in Kitchener when we received word that one of the busses from Lancaster was involved in a serious accident near Danville, New York. The bus had slid off the highway and tumbled down an embankment, killing the team goalie Kent Dixon and injuring many other of my friends, some seriously. Word of this tragedy spread throughout the Friendship Exchange, and players and parents gathered at a Kitchener-area gym to all hold hands and join together in prayer for the Dixons, the injured players, and their families. Kent Dixon is remembered each season as the Kent Dixon Memorial Award is presented to a Lancaster travel Midget player, and the Kent Dixon Memorial Team Award is presented annually to a travel team. A jersey with “20” and “Dixon” is displayed at the Lancaster Ice Rink, and the number 20 has been retired for all house and travel Firebird teams, plus all Friendship Exchange teams. As an avid collector of ice hockey items, when in Canada I would purchase dozens of boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese plus cereal boxes, then dump out the contents of the boxes on the hotel desk just to retrieve the ice hockey player cards that were inside the boxes. Even peanut butter jars had collectables on them. Canadian friend Ron McGuire would assist me throughout the year by purchasing items that had collectables. On the way home from Canada, my car was 10 filled with opened boxes of Mac & Cheese—luckily I was never stopped by Customs, they might not have believed that I really had all the boxes just for the ice hockey cards. Random memories: • Different Pennsylvania rinks that games were played through the years: Outdoor Rink at Hershey Arena, The Skatium at Mechanicsburg, tiny rink at Holy Name of Jesus School in Harrisburg. • During a game in Harrisburg, a flying puck took half of a cigar right out of my mouth. • Lions Arena, Grand River Area, Wilson, Twin Pads, the Queen’s portrait in every rink, Kitchener Rangers, the band that played in the upper corner of the Auditorium during Rangers games. • When learning to skate, my son Barry used the boards of the Park City Ice Rink to get stopped. • “Hockey Night in Canada,” Don Cherry, Conestoga College Hockey School, Kitchener Summer Hockey School, • Kitchener Coin, Peter Puck coach. • Everyone in Canada knows and talks hockey and they love their Toronto Maple Leafs. • The great socials, the Alumni players, the beer room, • Canadian weather, the QEW, German heritage (Kitchener used to be called Berlin). • Kitchener Highway Market, Mothers Pizza, Valhalla Inn, Eaton’s, Arrow shirt factory, Octoberfest, Farmer’s Market, the Amish, Fairview Mall. • In 1979 while shopping at the Fairview Mall in Kitchener, we first learned of the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The Lancaster Ice Rinks When Lancaster County Youth Amateur Hockey League (LCYAHL) started in 1971 it only had total of 80 players and was based at the small Park City Ice Rink. When that rink closed, there weren’t any ice rinks in Lancaster County, so Exchange games were played at Hershey Outdoor rink. During LCYAHL’s formative years in the 1970s and early 1980s, our Canadian friends encouraged, supported us and helped give us the fortitude to pursue owning our own ice rink. In 1984 the LCYAHL leased space for an ice rink in an unused building of the former Posey Iron Works at F & M College. After purchasing and installing the equipment for the ice surface—LCYAHL finally had their own rink! It was crude—no heat, porta-potties, and when a puck left the ice it might fly through one of the hundreds of glass windows. Many volunteers donated tons of time to operate the rink, its programs, and the snack bar, so during the next 10 years, LCYAHL was able to save enough money to purchase their own land and build a brand new ice rink. The Lancaster Ice Rink’s grand opening in 1995 was attended by some of our Canadian friends, such as Mike Aultman and others from Kitchener Hockey. During the next Exchange, our Canadian friends were impressed with our brand new building which included bleachers on the mezzanine, real toilets (instead of porta-potties), and heat in the locker rooms and spectator areas! Thank You A sincere thank you to Kitchener Minor Hockey for all your help during the past 40 years—we hold you in highest regard.I’ll never forget all my Kitchener friends. My wish is that this Exchange go on for another 40 years! —Harold Hilsher Past President of LCYAHL, past Scheduler, past organizer of Exchange for Lancaster, contact of the Lancaster Firebirds Friendship Hockey Exchange—2012—the 40th year “The Three Stars of the Exchange” from a player in 1972 Exchange Karl Schein Canadian player in 1972 and recently in Alumni games I think of it as “The Three Stars of the Exchange” that have blessed me over the years. 3) The Third Star is the “friendly” competition everyone enjoys. 2) The Second Star is the gift of friendship that surrounds us all, and 1) The First Star of the Exchange for me is the inspirational love, the eternal love, the love that fills my soul and warms my heart, the love I share with Liz, which started as a love-at-first-sight chance encounter during the Friendship Exchange. Yours in friendship, Karl Schein Karl Schein was one of the original Canadian Players from the first Exchange in 1972. Since then, he has occasionally participated in the Friendship Exchange Alumni games. The photo was taken during the 2003 Alumni game. The Year it Almost Ended: 2007 Late in the season of 2007, there was a heated committee meeting in the cafeteria room of Lancaster Ice Rink. The USA Friendship Exchange was in dire straits. The bank account was near empty, there were barely enough players for a Squirt team and not enough players to field any other team. We were still talking about an amazing 35th Anniversary event that we were at only 9 months ago. The committee pulled off an amazing 1970s theme social that will probably never be matched again. How could we call it quits now? There were several new families who had just discovered the program and could not believe it was going to be canceled and dissolved. The Canadian teams were set; they were raising money and planning their trip down to PA. Their back-up plan was to find a travel or in-house team in the area and just spend the weekend playing hockey. No parent social, no team parties, no charity game, and worse … no return trip to Canada. It was all but over for the Exchange. A group of parents led by Grant Beauchamp did not want to give up. We knew the key to success was recruiting players, and that’s what we did. Families like the Boughters, the Goods, the Primes, the Klotzbaugh’s set out to recruit. Grant reached out to the York Ice Rink, where we had picked up players in the past, but never actively recruited there. Grant and Bob Rutherford also worked hard to cut cost and raise money. With financial help from Lancaster Ice Rink, Direct Buy, and the Canadian Committee themselves we were able to pull off the 36th year! Many of us double billeted that year; but, through a few families with Passion (As Mike Aultman eloquently described to us during the 36th Parent Social), we gained momentum and we knew in order to grow the program we had to recruit more players and families. This led us to Twin Ponds, Hershey, Palmyra, and Regency rink. The program itself is magical; we do not orchestrate the bonds that occur each season. We do not create the family memories you will cherish forever. We (the committee, coaches, managers), just provide the opportunity for these special moments to occur. We have the Passion for the program and we want to share this experience with more and more families. Keep this amazing program going, volunteer! —John Prime Forty years ago the world was a lot different in many ways. But one thing is still the same: a new friendship can add a new dimension to your life. An enduring friendship can change your world forever. “A Hockey Season Lasts a Few Months, A Friendship is Forever.” 11 Denny Kissinger A player in the 1970s, Denny continues to volunteer after 40 years To use a cliché—I have so many memories over the last 40 years. But before all the memories, you have to appreciate how this all started. The beginning—a mutual interest in youth hockey You have to wonder how two men from different countries would have struck up a conversation, what they would have talked about and how the conversation evolved to ice hockey. Perhaps John Bieth was wearing a Kitchener team jacket, or when introducing himself to Paul Pelland, he mentioned being from Canada, and what are the possibilities that someone from Canada was involved in hockey. But somehow the conversation did turned to hockey—and with Paul’s son Pete just starting that year in the League in Lancaster, I’m sure John had Paul’s attention. But how did this exchange really come about from that meeting. Having the fortune of knowing both John and Paul Pelland, and knowing Paul was a salesman; I can only imagine how that conversation went. Now visualize with me if you will, We’re on an airplane in the early 1970s, John is about my size with long blonde hair parted on the side, side burns, is sitting at the window seat. Walking down the aisle is Paul. Now Paul is around 6’2”, a bit portly, thinning hair, wire-rim glasses and smiling eyes. Knowing John, I’m sure Paul shared a portion of John’s seat. As the conversation turns to hockey, I’m sure John mentioned he was coaching a AAA Select team from Kitchener, Ontario. Now here’s where Paul’s sales talents must have kicked in. He would have to convince John to schedule a weekend, load up his ice hockey team for a twelve-hour bus trip to a town in Pennsylvania that most of the families from Kitchener probably never heard of. But the larger question is—did Paul explain to John that the organization in Lancaster was only in its second year of existence, and the majority of the Lancaster players had less time on the ice in their whole lives than John’s players spent in one month? Needless to say, the games were perhaps a bit one sided. But John’s Canadian boys, players like Dave Stevens, Scott Fraser, and the rest, showed their class by turning the game from competition into a fun and friendly atmosphere. And Sunday’s game was the start of mixing-up players for the last game of the tournament. From that first weekend, a commitment was made for another tournament the following year, and here we find ourselves 40 years later. My brother participated the first year, I had to wait Although my family has been a part of the exchange since the first year, and regardless of my begging and pleading, it was my older brother that participated in that first year. The second year, I realized the thrill of playing against Canadians and visiting Canada, and although the outcome was very similar to the first year, the exchange was on it’s way to planting the seeds of friendship. I had the privilege of playing in the exchange six times. Thinking back as a young player, the experience of visiting 12 a foreign country, the culture, the snow, and of course my billets: Dwayne Thacker, twice; Brian Mallot; Doug Brohman; and Rob Halter; the experience was really awesome. But the exchange was much more than that. It was the thrill of loading my hockey equipment into a bus, spending time with my teammates traveling to Canada, and of course skating on Canadian ice, and seeing the game I loved from the eyes of Canadian families. Its not really about hockey games Naturally the friendships grew to include more than just hockey. There were the summer camping trips with the Witmyers, Augers, Leppingtons, Edgerdes, and Roenbergers. Dansville, New York was a mid-way point between the two cities. We would make camp-pies and roasted corn, paddle boats in the pond, and take day trips around central New York. Through the exchange, life-long friends were made. Friends that shared life’s happiness through weddings, births, lives, and of true friendship that is comforting during the passing of loved ones, and the dark days of life. Should the Friendship Exchange continue after tragedy? Dansville, New York is memorable in the history of the Friendship Exchange. In 1977 it was the location of the bus accident that claimed the life of Kent Dixon and injured 35 other Lancaster players who were on their way to Kitchener for the annual event. After this tragedy there was question if we should continue with the Friendship Exchange program. A friendship never ends—the Alumni teams After graduation from high school and moving on from midget hockey, we still stayed in touch with our friends but finding an opportunity to get together was difficult. As adults, we missed the yearly fun of the Friendship Exchange and so the alumni team was formed. The alumni team was the brainchild of Bob Leppington and myself. Visiting Kitchener for the wedding of Sharon Auger and Scott Spinelli, Bob suggested reuniting the teams from 1977. The first year of an alumni team was the reuniting of the teams from the year of the bus accident. Alumni teams have been participating in the Exchange for many of the years since the mid-1980s. An unforgettable experience for thousands of people The realization of how many people in the Lancaster area were touched by the exchange happened to me in 2009. I was at the UPS store in Lititz, Pa. mailing items to friends in Kitchener, and as I gave the young employee the address, he told me he had been to Kitchener as part of the exchange, and talked positively about his experience. When you think about this common thread that has touched so many people from both cities over the 40 years—we really are part of something special. —Denny Kissinger Played in the Exchange for six years beginning in 1974, played with the Alumni Team for many years, volunteered for over 30 years Friendship Hockey Exchange—2012—the 40th year Barry Melchi A love of ice hockey inspires him to volunteer, the friendships and memories are the reward “So what team is your child on?” It’s something that parents have been asking me for 25 years, so I proceed to explain to them that I’ve never had any children, but that enables my wife and I to have time to volunteer for different organizations and charities. I was a kid in Lititz in the 1960s when my parents started taking me to Hershey Bears games almost every night of the season. The fast-paced game of ice hockey fascinated me, and like most kids exposed to ice hockey, I decided that someday I was going to play ice hockey. But there weren’t any ice rinks in Lancaster County at the time, so my only chance to learn to skate was when my Dad took me to frozen ponds where I hacked around the ice ridges and holes using my hockey stick and a battered puck. In 1972 a small ice rink opened at the Park City shopping mall, so I managed to get some skating on smooth ice, however it closed in just a few years. When I got my driver’s license and my first car, then I was free to travel to Hershey Park Arena indoor and outdoor rinks, plus to the Skatium in Mechanicsburg. I played in men’s leagues at those two rinks for years, and then came the big news: a full-size real ice rink was opening in Lancaster in 1984! It wasn’t pretty—it was located in an abandoned iron factory building. All the rink equipment was purchased used. Everything except the ice had a grimy coating of black dirt, the roof leaked and caused stalagmites to form on the ice from the dripping water. There was no heat and portable toilets only—but when the Kitchener teams arrived for the Friendship Exchange that year, we were proud that we finally had a rink that belonged to the Lancaster County Youth Amateur Hockey League (LCYAHL), and it was located in Lancaster. I was at that rink so much that before long I was coaching inhouse kids, and around 1987 I was asked to participate in the Kitchener Exchange as a coach. Originally the participating youth from Lancaster were players on the “travel” teams—but because their schedule was so full, it was decided to have Lancaster’s in-house teams be the participants in the Lancaster-Kitchener Friendship Exchange. What a wonderful opportunity for the kids who normally played only in Lancaster rinks—they and their families travelled to Kitchener, Ontario and got to experience all the fun of the exchange. In the late 1980s, Harold Hilsher was shouldering most of the duties of organizing the exchange. My wife and I were doing a lot of volunteering at the rink—including staffing the snack bar, which greatly contributed to the money available for building the new ice rink in 1995. Harold drafted us and we began to help him organize the Friendship Exchange. Of course in the late 1980s email didn’t exist, so all communication was done by mailings and phone calls to everyone. There weren’t team managers either, so we would call the team coaches about things, then they would have to call all the parents. We would also prepare forms and information sheets which were handed out at the rink. One of things that amazes parents today is that the billets were NOT decided in advance. After each of the first games on Friday night in Lancaster, we had all the players gather in the corner of the rink, and then Harold Hilsher would point to a Canadian player and say “ok, you go with this kid” and point to a US player. It was chaos as players and families scribbled phone numbers and names, while the newly partnered billets stood by and looked apprehensive about leaving the rink with a family they just met 5 minutes ago. Amazingly it seemed to work out ok, and rarely did we have to move a billet to another family. One of the best things to see is how the billets looked the next morning as they arrived together at the rink to play hockey against each other. They were now smiling and joking and talking about how they stayed up all night playing games, getting to know each other and the minor differences between our countries. It’s fun to see how the kids are dressed and on the bench ready to play even before the Zamboni starts to prepare the ice. You can tell that this Exchange is one of the most exciting and fun things they’ve ever experienced. During the 1980s and early ‘90s the jerseys were not special— they were plain colors and we just had to make sure that one team had light color and the other dark. After Mike Aultman introduced the official logo, we began buying sweatshirts with the logo on and selling them at the events. That meant that our living room was filled with boxes of sweatshirts which we had to haul to the rinks, and then Kay and our friend Sylvia Rees from Canada would sell the shirts. Usually we had to make room to take up the rest of the shirts to Canada and sell them in the lobby of the Auditorium. We met our friends Grant and Sylvia Rees from Kitchener in 1989 when Kay and Sylvia were standing beside each other as Grant and I were playing against each other in an Alumni game. Kay asked Sylvia if she was from Lancaster or Kitchener, and from that chance conversation grew a friendship that has lasted for over 20 years. The Rees’ came to visit Lancaster County many times, often bringing their two boys who are now grown men. With Grant and Sylvia we’ve vacationed to Vermont, Rehoboth Beach, Baltimore, and sprint car races. As new parents and volunteers became involved in the program, we would tell them to keep in mind that the kids do play hockey against each other, but that is NOT the purpose of the Exchange. Making new friends, learning what life is in another county, and having lots of fun— that is what is important. Perhaps we shouldn’t even keep score? The Friendship Exchange would not have survived if winning games was stressed. Often for the last game of the weekend, the teams shuffle and billets get to play on the same team together instead of against each other, and they have a grand time skating and laughing. After the last game of the weekend, most parents are taking pictures of their billets together—one in a USA shirt, and one in a Canadian shirt—but smiling like they have been good friends for a long time. When I observe those moments of new friendship, it makes a permanent memory in my mind, always reminding me that all the hard work by volunteers is worth it to see two new friends who were brought together by a mutual love of ice hockey. Several months ago I ran into a father whose son participated in the Friendship Exchange about 10 years ago. He commented that of all the things that his son did in his school years, the Friendship Exchange is at the top of the list as most memorable. So why do I volunteer even though I don’t have kids? To help you understand, I ask you to stand at the rink’s door and watch as the kids leave the rink after the last game in Lancaster— they are joking and laughing like old friends and yelling “see you in a few weeks!” But don’t look too closely at my eyes because they might be a little moist as I am touched by the sight of the kids who two days before were total strangers from different countries have become friends, all because of the game of ice hockey and a very special program. This Exchange can be a life-changing experience, not only for the kids, but for families and volunteers, too. —Barry Melchi (assisted by his ghost writer Kay Melchi) Volunteer since 1987, co-chair and chairman of Friendship Exchange from 1989 to 2004. “A Hockey Season Lasts a Few Months, A Friendship is Forever.” 13 Wearing 29 in Memory of Ben Raslovesky Ben Raslovetzky had a passion and dedication to the game of hockey like no other. His smile and enthusiasm was contagious to everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him. Ben was able to play in the exchange with the assistance of Children’s Wish plus a strong desire to play the game he loved so much. In October 2011 Ben lost his battle with Cancer. So for all that Ben taught us in his short time with us, we remember him by wearing his number 29 and a gray ribbon on our 2012 Friendship Exchange jerseys. Please take the time to enjoy the uniqueness of the Friendship Exchange weekends. I know Ben is smiling down and cheering us on, in the game he truly loved. –Mike Aultman, Kitchener Friendship Committee REMEMBERING Kent Dixon Kent Dixon a goalie for the 1977 Lancaster-Kitchener Friendship Exchange Kent Dixon, of Elizabethtown, Pa. was a seventeen year old Lancaster Youth Hockey Goalie who was tragically killed in a bus accident as his team was traveling to Kitchener, Ontario in 1977 to participate in the Lancaster-Kitchener Friendship Exchange Hockey Tournament. The Kitchener Women’s Auxiliary have honored Kent by presenting the LCYAHL with a trophy in his honor. Each year the Kent Dixon Memorial Award is given to the Lancaster travel Midget player who has contributed the most to his team as selected by the coaches. Also a trophy was presented to the LCYAHL by the Lancaster Peewee team that same year. This is the Kent Dixon Memorial Team Award. It is presented annually to the travel team with the best winning percentage in all games. We are honored and grateful that the Dixon family has continued their support of the LCYAHL and the Exchange.
