Press Kit Formatting Note
Given the transitory nature of the series as it progresses through the seasons,
so too shall be this press kit. Season-specific information will be added as we make
our way through the series.
For that reason there are no set pages for the table of contents. As we
progress through the marathon this kit will expand, increasing the number of pages
and throwing any counting scheme off.
Battlestar Galactica
The Cylons were created by a race of reptiles.
Cylons and humanity had waged a terrible war between one another for nearly a
millennia. Hope, at long last, seemed to shine bright on the horizon as the peace accords for
the armistice assembled to end the horrific and devastating conflict once and for all. Then
the attack came. With the human colonies wiped out the survivors, bandied together in a
rag-tag fleet, now search for that one final human refuge: the mythical thirteenth colony
known as Earth.
Debuting in 1978, Battlestar Galactica was a remarkable television series for its time.
Banking on the post-Star Wars hype the show, as conceived by Glen Larsen, dealt with the
heavy themes of a post-apocalyptic world where the human race is all but wiped out by a
superior enemy bent on finishing the job. This is a startling contrast to its sci-fi television
forebears, the majority of which attempted to keep an optimistic atmosphere even I the face
of overwhelming odds. Star Trek offered a tidy and Technicolor universe, Lost in Space kept
on smiling even when Earth and home seemed the most distant. Galactica’s end-times
storyline was quite novel for its time and place on prime-time network television.
Unfortunately, NBC didn’t see fit to agree entirely with this ideology and began
inflicting their sway to push the show into a more family-friendly hour. This led to a growing
campiness very early on in the series which did more to hurt the show’s popularity than
promote it to a larger audience. Still, the show was a decent success prompting surprise
amongst the fans upon its cancellation after only a single season. The main reason for the
series’ premature ending was likely due to the exorbitant costs of its production – it was, after
all, the most expensive show on television at the time. With its massive amount of special
effects and large guest casts, Galactica’s production budget failed to make it profitable. Fan
protest succeeded in bringing the show back in a much reduced and sterilized form as
Galactica 1980 before that too was shelved after a run of only ten disappointing episodes.
Many attempted over the years to bring the show back, from Richard Hatch’s
(Captain Apollo) trailer Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming in 1999 through the almostto-production continuation series by Brian Singer and Tom Santos in 2001. Finally, in 2003,
the Sci-Fi channel green-lighted Ronald D. Moore and David Eick to begin production on a
miniseries for their proposed Galactica series.
This met with hostility from hardcore fans of the original series who disapproved of
Moore and Eick’s tampering with their universe. Nevertheless, the new Battlestar Galactica
has gone on to produce four seasons of television and has opened an entire new generation
up to the Galactica universe, to embrace both shows for their own unique merits.
Galactica Marathon
The emblem for the Battlestar Galactica Marathon features the standard
Colonial Forces unit insignia design as seen on all Colonial uniforms in the new
reimagined series. Where patches on that Galactica’s uniforms feature the ship’s
Battlestar Group number along the bottom – in Galactica’s case BSG-75 – this
insignia instead emphasizes the marathon.
In the center are the triangular shapes from Galactica’s ship patch in the
original series. The inclusion of the new Galactica’s insignia with the old show’s
emblem connects the two disparate eras of Battlestar Galactica and reminds us that,
since the reimagined show’s marathon is over, we now have the entire original show
to watch.

Press Release
The official press release for the Battlestar Galactica Marathon:
• • •
Sunday, June 28, 2008.
The Cylons were not created by man.
They still rebelled.
They didn’t evolve.
And they did have a plan.
With the reimagined series Battlestar Galactica marathon successfully completed it’s time to return to
its roots. The original series, that much discounted space opera, still deserves some respect. That
said, this second chapter of the Battlestar Galactica marathon series aims to showcase the original
1978-79 series and its sorry sequel, Galactica 1980. Gone is all the nerve-wracking serious drama of
the new show and in its place a long line of clunky centurions and questionable science from the era
of that post Star Wars sci-fi high. By your command.
• • •
The Battlestar Galactica Marathon is to be held at Josh’s House.
Marathon will be held over a series of weeks, per attendee’s schedules.
Marathon date: TBA.
