Lilac Lines Spring 2015 - Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens
Lilac Lines Spring 2015 Volunteers having fun at the gardens Dwight tries out his new “gavel”! Be a Volunteer too! Come Join Us for the Lilac Days April 18th through May 10th President’s Message This year’s spring is here! Since winter was somewhat scant, I cannot remember when there was less of a change of seasons! While it is wonderful to have great weather, it has also brought us an early lilac bloom. Our expert opinion is that the lilacs are about two weeks ahead of average years. With Lilac Days on the horizon (April 18-May10), it means that we are looking at opening lilac sales the week before Lilac Days. This is not that unusual as we normally sell lilacs while we are there setting up, but this year we may need to have a little more focus on selling during that week. We can always use help during that week as we prepare for the Celebration. Please consider volunteering to help during Lilac Days. It is a great opportunity to support a wonderful cause and be part of the team that gives so much joy to so many people. Openings still exist in the house, plant sales and the gift shop. If you are not sure who to contact please give me a call at 503-970-1082 and I will get you to the proper place to register. Below are some of the sessions to prepare our volunteers for Lilac Days. It is exciting to think this year’s celebration is getting close. Some important dates are coming up: April 13, noon, Plant Sales volunteers’ lunch at the Gardens (Gardens’ office building - approx. 1 hour) April 15, noon, Cashier volunteers training and lunch (office building - approx. 1 hour) April 11, 2pm Hulda’s House volunteers Tea – at the Woodland Christian Church across from the Woodland High School Parking Lot. Please note that Jane Kirkpatrick Day is April 26. She will be at the Gardens signing her books from 11 am to 3pm There are many opportunities to support your Gardens during Lilac Days and the week before and after. The Gardens succeed only through the efforts of you - our loyal volunteer force. Thank you for helping to preserve the Gardens for future generations to continue to enjoy. And thank you for the opportunity to serve. Your President Dwight Trahin 503-970-1082 What’s going on in the farm house this year? Well, a lot is going on – we refinished the floors in the main living room and hallway and entry. They turned out beautiful. First we removed the carpets that were there since around 1976 and found the wood floors! But they were painted (pictures below) and they even painted around the rugs. Guess it was a time or money saver! This was very common for these old Victorian homes in that era. We checked the wood out and knew we could refinish them. Then out of the blue we received absolutely a beautiful large rug and several runners from a donor that also paid for the floor refinishing. So blessed we are. It didn’t stop there. Dave Audette, one of our board members, has removed all the window and door hardware to restore it to the original metal finish. He spent long hours removing many layers of white paint. It turned out beautiful. So look for it when you are in the Farm House. After refinishing! We also have more pictures on our Facebook page – just type in “Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens”. Annual Quilt Raffle Again this year we having our Annual Quilt Raffle – Raffle tickets will be available in the Farm House. The cost is the same - $1.00 per ticket or 6 tickets for $5.00. Yearly Farm House Hostess/Musicians Luncheon We are doing a little something different this year – we are changing the location for our Hostess/Musicians Luncheon. It will be at the Woodland Christian Church at 430 Buckeye Street, Woodland, WA – across from the Woodland High School on Saturday, April 11th @ 2:00 pm. This will give us a lot more room and a bigger kitchen. We look forward to seeing each and every one of you! Entertainment and Music The Entertainment and Music program at the Lilac Gardens this year is going to be GREAT!!!! We are excited to announce that the Fargher Lake Boys, Clay Dye and Friends and John Buck will be our featured performers in the Pavillion. We have pianists, violinists, flutists and soloists sharing their amazing talent in the parlor for all of our guests. You'll want to plan to spend some time enjoying the gardens as well as our awesome musicians. You might even want to join them on a song or two!!! There are several other musical events that some of our performers are involved with such as: THE GRANGE GALA on May 29, HOT CHILI COOL JAZZ (high school jazz groups) on June 5, and VANCOUVER USA SINGERS on June 6 and 7. Clark County has quite a few other musical events in the next few months...just ask one of our performers about their "performance calendar". Enjoy our wonderful musicians and gardens during Lilac Days. On Display at the House This year the house is featuring a display of glassware including bowls, casseroles, cups, plates, serving platters, creamers, vases and more. Fire King, Anchor Hocking and Pyrex were glassware for everyday use. Pyrex was introduced by the corning Glass Company in 1915. FireKing produced by Anchor Hocking was originally available in the 1940’s. Also on display will be vintage cookbooks, so if you have Grandma’s Betty Crooker cookbook or any other one you would like to share we will add them to our display. Please contact one of the house committee members if you are willing to share your treasures. The Recipe Corner How Did You Make That? Dwight’s Favorite German Chocolate Cake 2 Betty Crocker Gluten Free Cake mixes prepared per directions and baked in 9x13 pan**. Frosting 8 egg yolks 2-12 oz. cans evaporated milk 2 tsp. Vanilla 3 cups sugar 2 cubes butter 1 14oz. Package flake coconut 1-1/2 cups chopped pecans Place egg yolks, evaporated milk, vanilla, sugar and butter in large sauce pan. Cook stirring constantly on medium high heat for about 12 minutes. Color should be a light yellow brown and the mixture thickened but not yet frosting consistency. Remove from heat and let rest for about 20 minutes. I set a timer so that I don’t forget the frosting. Add the coconut and chopped pecans. Let cool for 1 hour until it is room temperature. Frost cake. From the kitchen of Catherine Trahin. Special Thanks Thank you to the following for contributing to this newspaper: Fran Northcut, Patti Audette, Deanna Hastings, and Dwight Trahin.
