About the Bethesda Foundation
The Bethesda Foundation was created by consent of the Manitoba Legislature on July 9, 1980. Since its
establishment, the Foundation has provided funding for the support and improvement of health care at
Bethesda Hospital , Bethesda Place, and throughout the region.
Any capital improvements to hospitals and other medical facilities require a 10% contribution from the
community. The Bethesda Foundation is the organization that has taken on the task of meeting this requirement on behalf of the community. Thanks to the continued support of generous donors, the Foundation has been successful in achieving this goal.
Thus far, over four million dollars has been granted by the Foundation for specific projects like the Emergency Room Redevelopment, the Cancer Care/Obstetrics facility and other projects.
With your help, the Foundation will continue to support health care in the community and serve as a catalyst for new initiatives.

The chairman of the board of the
Bethesda Foundation has served
on the board since the early
1990’s and has been the chairman since 1997. He is a partner
at Campbell Marr LLP where he
has practiced for 35 years.
Milton Penner
The chairman of Penner
International has been active on
the Bethesda Foundation board
since its inception. He has been
instrumental in fund-raising
initiatives and the financial wellbeing of the Foundation. He has
been named honorary chair of
the Foundation.
Marg Rempel
The owner and operator of
a mixed farm northwest
of Steinbach for over three
decades, Marg is still passionate
about the importance of primary
food production. The mother
of three adult children and
busy grandmother, she serves
as Bethesda Foundation Board
Secretary.
Darrel Penner
The co-owner and CFO of
Penner Farm Services based in
Blumenort has been a member
of the Bethesda Foundation
board for 18 years. He chaired
Bethesda Wellness
Inc,
responsible for construction
of the new Crises Stabilization
Unit, and chairs the finance/
audit committee of the board.
Gladys Derksen
A board member since 1996.
A volunteer at Cancer Care
for many years, she is active
on the Bethesda Foundations
priorities committee, the
communications/publicity
committee and is secretary
of the Bethesda Wellness Inc.

Henry Van de Velde
Henry is the newest member
of the Foundation board having
been elected in September of
this year. He is currently a jointowner of Hylife in La Broquerie.
He and his wife Penny and their
3 sons moved to Steinbach
20 years ago from western
Manitoba where they were
dairy farmers. He has served on
several boards and organizations
and is presently serving on the
Steinbach Credit Union board.

Clyde Loewen
The co-owner of Loewen
Windows is actively involved
in numerous boards and
philanthropic
endeavors.
Presently the chair of The
Eastman Education Centre Board
and chair of the C.P. Loewen
Foundation, Clyde and his wife
Terry reside in Steinbach.
Waldo Neustaedter
A well-known real estate broker
and property developer in the
City of Steinbach is involved
in a number of community
organizations
including
Bethesda Wellness Inc. He has
a passion for the community
and especially health care.
Waldo and his wife Bonnie are
Steinbach residents.
Dr. Curtis Krahn
A driving force in promoting
the new Cancer Care facility at
Bethesda Hospital, Dr Krahn has
practiced medicine since 1983.
Active in the community, he has
served on numerous boards and
committees and brings a wealth
of medical knowledge to the
Foundation board.
Louis Balcaen
The past president of Dairy
Farmers of Canada was a dairy
and grain farmer in the La
Broquerie area for over four
decades and has represented
dairy farmers provincially,
nationally and internationally. He
is currently very actively involved
in a prison ministry and serves on
the tri-diocesan board of Future
Hope, a Catholic organization.
John Peters,
Executive Director
The executive director of the
Bethesda Foundation has
been serving the board since
2007, after his retirement as
superintendent of the Hanover
School Division. He has served
on a number of community
organizations and boards,
including the Mennonite Heritage
Village, the Manitoba Association
of School Superintendents and
the Eastman Education Board.
Keith Unger has recently joined the
Bethesda Foundation board and
has shown passion serving the
community in prior roles, including
past chair of the Steinbach Chamber
of Commerce and Steinbach
Summer in the City Festival. Keith
is co-owner of a Realty business in
Steinbach. He is a team leader of a
project marketing and sales group
and also operates a development
and holding company. Keith holds
a Bachelor of Commerce degree from
the Asper School of Business. Keith
and his wife Kassi have two sons and
reside in the Steinbach area.

Getting it Done!
You Helped Make This Happen
In 2005, the Bethesda Foundation undertook a large
capital campaign with the goal of raising the community’s
10 percent contribution required for construction of
a surgical wing, a Cancer Care/Obstetrics wing and
emergency room redevelopment at the Bethesda Regional
Health Centre.
Thus far, over $2 million has been granted by the
Foundation for completed projects including the Cancer
Care Unit and another $2.2 million has has been spent
for the emergency department upgrade which opened in
September of 2014.
Thanks to the support of the Bethesda
Foundation and Bethesda Wellness...
The community responded with great generosity and
continues to help the Foundation to be a strong supporter
of health care in the community and a catalyst for new
initiatives.
These two major projects at the Bethesda Health Centre
are just the latest examples of how all funds raised by the
Bethesda Foundation stay in the community as part of the
Foundation’s mission to “enhance health services in the
Bethesda service area through innovation, partnership
and funding.”
“The Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) is a part of a spectrum
of mental health crisis services provided by the Southern
Regional Health Authority. Having a CSU closer to home for
residents of southeastern Manitoba enhances the capacity
to provide collaborative and integrated mental health
services. The unit, which can accommodate up to eight
residents, is designed for short-term stays, generally 3-5
days.
“Since opening at the end of February, 2012, hundreds
of community residents have stayed at 450 Main. We have
created an environment where people will regain stability
in their lives through professional support, reconnection
to families, and other community links in order to restore
balance and the ability to flourish physically, emotionally
and spiritually.
“CSU services include: 24/7 professional support, brief
treatment counselling, educational and therapeutic groups,
referrals to other services and follow-up support.”

Bethesda Foundation praised for
funding high-tech teaching tool

This isn’t your average dummy.
Staff at Bethesda Hospital were
singing the praises of the Bethesda
Foundation this week so loudly it
almost drowned out the moaning
and groaning of their new patient
in the corner of room.
Don’t worry. He’s not real.
Hospital staff are ready to get
down to work using a new $55,000
high-tech mannequin that comes
to them courtesy of the Bethesda
Foundation. The foundation
is perhaps better known for its
instrumental financial role in
larger hospital capital projects like
the birthing centre, cancer care
unit and emergency department

hospital staff to claim a medical mulligan in a safe environment.
The life-like mannequin responds to various scenarios and
is connected wirelessly to computer program which monitors
vital signs.
Dr Christo Minnaar says the new tool will help students and
staff at the facility tackle situations including operating room
procedures and critical care incidents. He says teaching tools
like this one are one of the ways the hospital can also position
itself as health leader, which can aid in recruitment and
retention efforts.
The mannequin is able to simulate actual physical responses
to changes in treatment and simulations can be made more
challenging if necessary.
The mannequin’s tongue can be made to swell in order
to create a scenario of a more challenging intubation. His
blood pressure responds to changes in medication. The
mannequin’s pupils respond to light and his eyes blink based
dosages should be and then monitor and respond to results.
The mannequin’s will respond, for better or worse, based on
the treatment administered.
Scenarios will challenge the participants general knowledge
and test their ability think on their feet.
“It’s a safe environment,” Minnaar says. “Nothing bad is going
to happen to the mannequin. The more you do, the more you
learn.”
Minnaar says this type of technology has changed the way he
learns and he’s excited for its arrival at Bethesda.
There are plans to incorporate the mannequin into the
training for a variety of departments.
“The whole hospital will benefit from that and ultimately the
patients,” he said.

Comfort Baskets for Palliative Care
Support for families is important for those who provide
compassionate end-of-life- care at Bethesda Regional Health
Care Centre in Steinbach.
Several years ago, Violet Vogt, Volunteer Project Coordinator, became aware of the need to provide practical
support to families at Bethesda, who were keeping vigil with
a loved one 24/7. People often found themselves in a hospital
lacking many small necessities and comforts of home.
“Your kindness and thoughtfulness will always be
remembered.”
Debbie Krahn is a regional palliative care nurse, who also
serves as a volunteer on the Comfort Basket Project. She
considers this project a great example of an effective partnership
between the Southern Health Palliative Care Team and the
Bethesda Foundation.
The Comfort Basket Project was developed to meet those
needs. Practical items such as personal care products, snacks,
comfort items and pastime activities were included. Volunteers
work together to assemble the products into a beautifully
wrapped basket that is delivered to these families by a member
of the Regional Palliative Care Team or the staff at Bethesda
Regional Health Care Centre.
In 2013, the project was briefly suspended due to funding
challenges. When the Bethesda Foundation Inc. became aware
of this need, funding was immediately approved for 50 baskets
at an approximate cost of $40 each.
Many positive comments have come in over the years from
families who have received these baskets.
A few examples include:
“Thank-you for the Comfort Care Basket, it helped to know
someone else cared about us and our loved one in our last days
together.”
“The Comfort Basket was the handiest thing…so many things
that you never remember to bring to the hospital yourself.”

Lemonade stand raises
funds for Foundation
Special guests at the September 24th meeting of the Bethesda Foundation Board, was this
group of young entrepreneurs who presented board members Keith Unger and Dr. Curtis
Krahn with a cheque representing the proceeds of a lemonade stand they set up to raise
money during their summer holidays. The young supporters of the Foundation are Erika
Kreutzer, Ella Reimer, Patty Kehler and Nikolas Reimer.
After serving for 34
years as a director of the
Bethesda Foundation,
Milton Penner has
decided to step back
from
regular board
director duties.
The
Board
has
decided to recognize
Milton’s
tremendous
contribution of time,
energy,
enthusiasm
and generosity to the
Foundation by naming
him Honorary Chair of the Foundation.
During his time as a Foundation director, Milton was
instrumental in raising a great deal of money for projects that
benefited the Bethesda hospital. He was an especially powerful
force in raising funds for the Cancer Care/Birthing Centre.
New board members marveled at how much wisdom he
could share in just a few words. His advice and suggestions were
always well thought out and valuable.
Milton is not one who seeks public recognition, preferring to
remain in the back ground, serving quietly and with great effect.
In his own words, “some of the best times I had with the
Foundation were serving farmer sausage burgers to the kids at
the SRSS who were part of the Dragon Boat races and hosting
appreciation luncheons and barbeques for the hospital staff.”
When the Gifts of Light campaign started some 15 years ago,
Milton took it upon himself to make sure it was an ongoing
and growing successful fund-raiser. He was never shy about
asking people to sponsor Christmas trees and people soon
came to expect a call from him and almost never said no to his
request for a donation! As one of his last official duties with
the Foundation, he has agreed to be the official tree lighter for
2015, a fitting tribute to the person who has helped make Gifts
of Light campaign such a success.
While Milton will no longer be a regular board member,
his advice will still be sought and as honorary chair his
name will be an on-going part of the Bethesda Foundation.
Thank you Milton for being such a strong supporter of the
Bethesda Foundation for these last 34 years!

Little Red Trees back for
Christmas season
T
wo hundred miniature red metal trees manufactured and
donated by Joe and Josh Waldner at WS Steel as a Bethesda
Foundation fundraiser last Christmas will be back on light
standards lining Steinbach streets again this year.
The little red trees were a popular part of the radio-a-thon
fundraiser for the Bethesda Foundation a few years ago. They were
designed by the staff at Golden West Radio. WS Steel manufactured
the trees covering all the costs so every dollar generated by donors
would go towards the work of the Bethesda Foundation.
Tree sponsors, along with the Waldners, are pleased to know
that funds raised locally by the Bethesda Foundation stay in the
community. The support for the little red tree project last year saw
the trees line Main Street from the Brandt Street intersection to
the fire hall.
The little red trees which were sponsored in memory of a family
member or friend or simply to show support for the Bethesda
Foundation were so popular they also lined Brandt Street all the
way from enVision offices to the Steinbach Bible College.
The trees can be sponsored simply by filling out the coupon
below or by calling or emailing the Bethesda Foundation Office.
The trees also will be available during the annual Christmas craft
sale at Clearspring Mall. Each tree will have a sign indicating the
name of the sponsor for this year or the names of a friend or family
member of the sponsor.
