1. What does it take to be a family? Not all families are connected by blood.
It has a much deeper meaning, especially to Builders. There isn’t a specific
time when you become a Builder. Sure, there’s the time when you send in your
application, the day you sign your letter of intent and, of course, the first day
of class. But, actually being a Builder sneaks up on you. It’s the discovery
that you have this undeniable passion for Southwestern. You realize that
the friends you made at Builder Camp are now people you can see yourself
growing old with. You start to understand that the rock you placed on The
Mound your freshman year is now a memory that you can cherish for a
lifetime. One day you will show your children the small piece of granite that
made you part of this family, a family that will stand together and give you
a2 place to belong. This is the Builder Family. (Stalder) 2. Elle Nguyen, biol-

(Woon) 3. Students admire the assortment of rocks that were placed in the
Mound on Aug. 23. Rocks as far back as 1927 can be seen in the Mound and
represent students who make up the Builder Family. (Woon) 4. Anastasia
Prokopis, business administration senior, and Jessie Riggs, liberal arts &
sciences senior, show their Builder pride by taking part in the SC Breakdown.
By raising a one and belting out “SC,” students know they are part of the
Builder Family. (Woon) Opposite. Hannah Podschun, English senior and Kaley
Rodriguez, elementary education senior, sing the alma mater. Podschun and
Rodriguez have been members of the Leadership Team for four years, giving
them another Builder Family. (Woon, page design Stalder)

1. It all starts with a ceremony and eventually ends with a ceremony. The
tradition that begins your journey as a Moundbuilder, starts the day that
you place your rock into Cole Mound Plaza. You share experiences with the
friends you made at Builder Camp and you walk the halls of Mossman, Beech,
or Christy going to class. These buildings will be part of your memories
when you look back on the years you spent at Southwestern College. You will
remember the historic atmosphere of Stewart Field House and trekking up
the 77, but most importantly you remember the family that was created at
this beloved institution. The day will come when you walk across the stage
and you take a piece of SC with you into the world. You won’t remember the
classes you took or the sleepless nights in Deets Library. What you will
remember is the connections you have made and the friends who are now
part of your Builder Family. (Woon) 2. Tashira Triplett, physical performance

and sports studies senior, celebrates getting her diploma. The undergraduate ceremony took place May 5 with a temperature of 58 and a gusty wind.
(Woon) 3. Amy Thornton, business administration senior, proudly accepts
her diploma from Dick Merriman, president. Thornton was the first senior
to start the conferring of degrees. (Woon) 4. Audra Mann, philosophy and
religious studies senior, awaits the procession to begin the undergraduate
ceremony. Seniors walked through a tunnel of supportive faculty before
stepping into Richard L. Jantz Stadium. (Woon) Opposite. Derreck CarterHouse, biology senior, Danielle Morford, marine biology senior, and Mariam
Mamah, biology senior, locate their families before the graduation ceremony.
Carter-House was one of two seniors who took home the prestigious Professor
Fran Jabara Leadership Award which was decided upon by faculty. (Woon,
