Traditionally, you will ask your co-worker to physically visit your desk and view the screen. What about co-workers who are physically and geographically unable to do so? Exceed 10 provides a new tool called Desktop Sharing that will help you solve the problem. The desktop sharing feature allows an Exceed session be viewed or controlled by users from anywhere. As the owner of an Exceed session, you just simply start the desktop sharing service and provide an Access Code which you will share with the intended participants, and then it is all set. Figure 8 — A screenshot of a shared Exceed session There are two levels of participation that the owner of a session can define when initiating the desktop sharing feature: View Only and Collaboration. Each level will give participants different degree of control on the shared session. Exceed Desktop Sharing instantly adds collaborative capability to any X application without changing a single line of code! Sun Overlay Support Exceed is now compatible with the proprietary Sun Overlay extension (SUN_OVL). Applications designed to utilize the Sun Overlay extension will be able to execute on machines running Exceed 10. The display will have the same quality as if it were running on a Sun platform. 13 > What’s New — Exceed 10 Xstart Multiple Workspace Support Exceed allows users to have up to 4 workspaces when using the Native window manager. The Workspace concept imitates the Common Desktop Environment and GNOME, and the workspaces are closely associated with the Gnome pager. In version 10, Exceed further extends the Workspace functionality by allowing users to directly send the X applications to a specific workspace, or populate all workspaces with the same application at once. Simply select an option in the Workspace Selection area and Exceed will do the rest. Figure 9 — Configure the workspace settings 14 > What’s New — Exceed 10 Connection Auto-Close It is a known fact that every X application takes up a minimum amount of resources on the host even if the application is idling. In order to efficiently utilize the host resources, administrators have to ensure the idling X applications and X sessions are purged regularly. Exceed supports a new feature that allows administrators to terminate unused or idling Exceed connections. Should one of the following two conditions be satisfied, the auto-close event will be triggered: > The connection terminates after the specified time: Specify a timeout value that indicates how long Exceed should wait in the absence of user input (keyboard or mouse) before closing a session. > The connection terminates when the screensaver activates: Uses the X Window screen saver to trigger the auto-close process. Figure 10 — Change the Auto Close settings in Xconfig GLX 1.4 Support Exceed 3D is the first in the PC X Server industry to fully support GLX 1.4 and be backward compatible with GLX 1.3 and earlier. The new GLX version represents a major breakthrough and some bold and forward looking changes to the OpenGL and 3D graphics API development. The new versions promise higher performance and better programmability. 15 > What’s New — Exceed 10 Exceed onDemand Bundle Exceed onDemand is a ground-breaking, server-based PC X server product that shares the same roots as Exceed. Exceed onDemand offers the most feature-packed Thin X window product, with the most advanced web deployment tools, and support for the most popular security protocols. Exceed 10 provides a localized version of the HWM that matches the language used by Windows or the language used in Exceed menus and dialogs. Improved User Directory Support Hummingbird product setup has been greatly enhanced to simplify the management of the user files location. User files can either be stored into each individual user directory or shared among all users of the same machine. 16 > What’s New — Exceed 10 Figure 12 — User Directory dialog during Exceed Setup Support for Local Installation Cache When introduced for the first time in Windows 2000, the Windows Installer technology gave Windows application a solid foundation to build a more reliable and standard setup. In Exceed 10, Hummingbird introduces the local installation cache technology, which allows administrators to copy an image of the installation files locally on the user desktop. With this technology, applying product updates or changing product setup gets a dramatic boost and suppresses the need for accessing the original setup media during certain Windows Installer operation. Automatic Updates after Installation Exceed 10 setup offers two new post-installation options that will allow users to keep their product up-to-date: > Run Hummingbird Update after installation option will connect to the Hummingbird Web site, retrieve the latest update pack and automatically apply it to the product. > Visit the Hummingbird WebUpdate site option will open a new browser window where users will be able to manually download and apply the latest update pack for the product. 17 > What’s New — Exceed 10 Figure 13 — Exceed new setup options Migration Wizard The Migration Wizard is an new utility that allows administrators to quickly import and export the user files into Exceed. This tool will prove to be particularly useful for organizations that want to operate quick backups of the user configuration files or in case of hardware migration when the users data needs to be transferred to a new machine. Figure 14 — Migration Wizard initial dialog 18 > What’s New — Exceed 10 Metering Client Settings User Interface Introduced in Exceed 9.0, the metering client and the metering server are components that can be deployed by the administrator to collect information about the desktops on which Exceed and other Hummingbird products are deployed. In Exceed 10, Hummingbird introduces a new graphic utility that allows administrators to quickly change the settings of the metering client. This utility allows changing the metering server location as well as the various connection parameters to this server. Media Location Manager Utility The Media Location Manager is a new utility that allows administrators to specify additional installation sources for Exceed. Windows Installer uses these sources to perform certain operations, such as updating the product or modifying the installed features. In case the original product source has disappeared or needs to be relocated, administrators can choose to add new sources from a variety of different locations: > local directory > network directory > URL Figure 15 — Media Location Manager Dialog 19 Server > Desktop Consolidation > X Window > UNIX integration > NFS v4 > Mainframe > Terminal Emulation > Security > SSL > Web-to-host > Cost Reduction > AS/400 > Mobile Workers > Thin rberos > Smart Card > X Desktop Sharing > WebNFS > Web Deployment > Linux > PC X Server > Desktop Consolidation > X Window > UNIX integration > NFS v4 > Mainframe > Terminal Emulat obile Workers > Thin X Protocol > Public Private Keys Authentication > Secure Shell > Telnet > FTP > Reducing Business Disruption > TN3270E > TN5250E > Easy Migration Path > Bi-directiona nframe > Terminal Emulation > Conflict Management > PC X Server > Desktop Consolidation > X Window > UNIX integration > NFS v4 > Mainframe > Terminal Emulation > Security > SSL > We Transforming Information into Intelligence™ Corporate Headquarters 1 Sparks Avenue, Toronto, Ontario M2H 2W1 Canada Toll Free Canada/USA: 1 877 FLY HUMM (359 4866) Tel: +1 416 496 2200 Fax: +1 416 496 2207 E-mail: [email protected] For more information, visit http://connectivity.hummingbird.com North American Sales Offices Boston • Chicago • Dallas • Los Angeles • Mountain View • New York Ottawa • Raleigh • Toronto • Washington DC International Sales Offices Amsterdam • Brussels • Frankfurt • Geneva • London • Milan Munich • Paris • Rome • Seoul • Singapore • Stockholm • Sydney Tokyo • Wokingham • Zurich WP-03-00-EN-0041.08/04 Copyright © 2004, Hummingbird Ltd.
