As Kent Harms walks gingerly down his ice-encrusted gravel driveway, he glances over his
shoulder at a century-old windmill.
The ancient blades spin
smoothly in the frigid Iowa wind
without pause.
Constant. Steady. Sure.
However, even as Harms’
windmill hums dependably over
his family farm near George, Iowa,
day after day, the winds of change
are blowing in the agriculture

The growth of ethanol production from corn and increasing
number of soybeans processed in
the Upper Midwest has given livestock producers another source of
feed for their livestock.
Co-products from the corn and
soybean processing industries can
be excellent sources of nutrients
for livestock and offer a nutrient-dense co-product feed that is
readily available.
The most interest from producers, including sheep producers, in
the Upper Midwest has been with
distillers dried grain with solubles
(DDGS) derived from ethanol production and soybean hulls (SH)
from soybean processing.
At the recent Pipestone
Lambing Time Shortcourse and
Bus Tour held in Pipestone, Philip
Berg, instructor in the Pipestone
Lamb & Wool Program, spoke on
feeding soybean hulls and DDGS
to sheep.
Berg noted that there hasn’t
been a lot of research on feeding
these co-products to sheep but
a number of the members of the
program have been feeding them
to lactating ewes for a couple of
years.
He said there are three main
reasons producers began selffeeding these to their sheep.
Number one is reduced labor:
self-feeding during lactation, second is utilization of facilities: you
are able to fit more sheep into a
building and third is economics.
Both of these co-products,
much like forages, are high fiberlow starch in content and have
unique nutrient profiles and physical characteristics. Also both can
safely replace a portion of traditional forage or grain in diets.
The nutritional properties of
soybean hulls are: Energy (77% on a
dry matter [DM] basis) which is not
as much as corn; Protein (12% on
DM basis); Calcium/Phosphorus
(0.55/0.17); Palatability (sheep and
lambs like it); Pelleted soybean
hulls have a higher bulk density
and are easier to store and transport.
Also under palatability you need
to consider consumption and cost
(very important), availability of the
product, transition period and the
risk of choking.

There are a couple things producers need to consider when
deciding to use these co-products
namely availability and cost. The
product comes directly from the
processing plant. Semi load lots
are the most economical.
Berg said that he knows of producers who contracted soybean
hulls for $75/ton while others have
paid $119/ton. The price fluctuates so producers are encouraged
to watch the cost closely.
An example given by Berg on
the cost comparison on an energy basis of soybean hulls costing
$119/ton shows that this is comparable to $91/ton alfalfa, $87/
ton grass hay, $3.70/bushel corn,
$141/ton DDGS and $42/ton corn
silage.
Under management there are a
number of things to consider when
feeding these co-products. Among
them are availability and pricing;
nutritional concerns (choking);
labor and facilities; feeders; storage and handling; creep feeding
and harvested feeds that are available.
One of the nutritional concerns
with feeding soybean hulls is the
chance of choking. This is a possibility and needs to be considered.
Berg noted several things that
the producer can do to help minimize the chance of the sheep choking when eating soybean hulls.
The biggest problem with choking occurs with the initial feeding
when the ewe eats the ration fast.
To offset this problem it is suggested it be mixed with forage,
top-dressed with DDGS/corn and
to transition the ewe when she is
full by feeding other feeds first.
One producer said he puts a
pound of corn on top so by the
time the ewe gets to the soybean
hulls she has slowed down.
Producers can see labor savings with feeding these co-products and also better utilization of
buildings.
A labor savings can be seen
with the use of self-feeders that the
producer can fill less frequently
and also the utilization of space by
these self-feeders can also help.
One drawback to feeding soybean hulls and DDGS is that bedding in the buildings will need to
be added to on a more frequent
basis so the producer may see an
increase in cost from the use of
more bedding.
Another consideration is the
storage and handling of the products.
Since they are purchased in
large volume sufficient storage
will be needed as well as the best
possible type of storage to suit the
producers needs. There are any
number of options that will work
depending on the operation.

Cooks all about organics, sustainability

When driving on the farmyard
of Ben and Karen Cook of rural
Adrian one is apt to see chickens
roaming the yard. No they didn’t
get out of the chicken coop they
are free range chickens the Cooks
raise for their egg production on
their certified organic farm.
Besides organic poultry and
eggs they also raise certified
organic crops and beef. The Cooks
are also members of the SW MN
Poultry Co-op, a cooperative of
producers who raise high Omega3 eggs to sell to grocery stores and
restaurants.

his grandfather’s house just across
the yard from the house where
Ben lived while growing up.
The Cooks have been certified
organic since 1995.
Ben said he is not really sure
what moved them towards organic
farming. He said while growing up
his father was pretty conservative
with farming and then Ben went
off to vocational school and came
back with all the latest technology, etc. and when he started they
went to conventional farming.
Karen mentioned some health
concerns as one of the reasons
behind looking at organic farm-
ing. “Ben’s dad had skin cancer
and concern with handling different chemicals is kind of why we
went with organic,” she said.
Ben noted that when they first
started it was like you were kind of
the oddball and people would say
why are you doing this but now
it’s not like that anymore. “Now
sometimes people call you, asking
how do you do that,” he said.
When they first started, Ben
said he was fortunate enough
to connect up with a couple of
organic farmers who had been
doing it for quite awhile and they
helped out a lot. They could tell
them the good buyers to go to
along with some good practices to
work with. “This helped out a lot,”
he said, noting that those involved
in organic farming are willing to be
mentors and help out.
Also, noted Karen, you can go to
a lot of different conferences. The
University of Minnesota supports
sustainability. There is an organic
wing at the Lamberton Experiment
Station and the St. Cloud organic
conference that was held recently.
Both mentioned that Minnesota
has been pretty aggressive in working with and promoting organic
farming.

Transportation front and center
in legislative debate this session

With the start of the 2008 legislative session just around the
corner, I thought I might briefly
discuss what I expect to be hot
topics throughout the next few
months, and some issues that I’ll
be fighting for.
This session, we absolutely need to find consensus on a
transportation funding package.
Both parties want to get something done in this area as it’s quite

draft a proposal that a majority
of lawmakers from both sides of
the aisle could support. To me,
this should be
Priority One
this session.
I
also
expect debate
that
would
increase funding for nursing
homes
and
our long-term
care
facilities, as well Rod Hamilton
as additional
funding
for
education. Keep in mind that this
is going to be difficult as we set the
budget last year, and we are facing
a $373 million deficit this year.
But when this debate comes up,
I and other rural lawmakers will
once again be looking to address
all the rate disparities between the
inner cities and rural Minnesota.
There’s no reason nursing homes
in Jackson should be reimbursed
at a rate lower than those in
Minneapolis - they’re both doing
the same job. The same goes for
our students – a student in St. Paul
should not be worth more than a
student in Windom.

paperwork. Ben said that it takes
three years of non-conventional
inputs before you can become certified. He noted that even though
it involves some work when it is
done it is well worth the effort.
“The main thing is record keeping and annual inspection,” Ben
said. “You also have to be open for
inspection anytime they want.”
They first got their crops certified organic and then within a year
of this they got the beef cattle certified. Ben said that because at that
point you wouldn’t want to not do
that because now you have certified organic feed so why not get
your animals certified because you
don’t want to feed certified organic
feed to non-organic animals.
Karen noted they also had a
market for their beef through
Organic Valley from Wisconsin.
“They were looking for producers
so we contacted their person in
charge of certification and have
been with them ever since.” She
said.
Organic Valley was started by a
few dairy farmers who got together
and is the dairy part and Organic
Prairie is the beef wing of Organic
Valley.
“It is a consumer driven
industry,” Karen said of organics.
“Consumers are demanding it and
producers have to follow suit.”
As far as raising the eggs Karen
said they have been doing that for
3 or 4 years. She said that there
aren’t many that do small time
poultry. You either have 1,000’s in a
barn or poultry house where massproducing or maybe have 30 hens.
“There aren’t many our size—
somewhere in the hundreds,”

Both Ben and Karen agreed
that raising poultry is very labor
intensive. Karen mentioned that
not many people want to do that
much hand labor noting that for
each increase in the quantity of
chickens there is also an increase
in the amount of work such as
washing eggs and delivering.
Ray Teeter, consultant with SW
MN Poultry Co-op, said the ideas
when the co-op first started were
small scale, locally grown high
quality Omega-3 broilers and eggs.
He noted the Cooks have taken it
to organic. Not all producers in the
co-op are organic, some are and
some aren’t.
When the group first started
they got together a few times at
Lamberton. Those involved were
mostly farmers interested in valueadded agriculture and asked how
and what they can do as small
producers to help our income.
Ray said he and Dr. Elizabeth
Dick worked for over a month to
get things together in order to get a
grant. He laughed when he said his

He said that there are people
out there, like the Cooks, who
have decided to go organic noting
these people are independent and
they’re not following the crowd.
Karen, who is secretary for the
co-op, said one of the nice things
about the co-op is that “we’ve tried
to support each other.” By this
she means they buy and sell the
commodities within the co-op.
An example of this would be the
Cooks purchasing flax from other
producers. She mentioned they
grind and mix their own feed.
She said another example of
buying together is with egg cartons. “When you sell to grocery
stores you need to have new cartons. All the cartons are purchased
in Mason City, Iowa. A producer
from Glenville goes to Mason City
and stocks up on bundles of cartons. We order what we need for
three months and then we meet

Madison was one of the real instigators of the co-op and was the
first president.
“When it came to the idea of
Omega-3 eggs and chickens we
were really pioneers,” Ray said.
“We really had to beat the bushes.”
Karen said there is a whole
movement, not just organic but
sustainability. Ray added that they
used the sustainable idea when
the co-op first started.
The first customer for the co-op
was the St. Peter Food Co-op and
they are now taking 40-60 dozen
eggs a week. Karen noted the coop serves an area from Glenville, as
far south as I-90, includes Garvin,
Morgan, Arco, Slayton and as far
north as Madison.
“We’ve had to kind of spread
to who will produce for us,” said
Ray. “Even though there are a lot
of people out there capable of producing for us, when you say the
chicken has to get out on the grass
and needs some sunshine and they
need to be fed the same ration so
the quality is the same, whether
it is you or me, this is the kind of

Also members can help if
another producer is short on production. If a producer in the co-op
is long on production they can
send some eggs to the producer
who is short to help out.
Ray added that a co-op isn’t a
co-op if you don’t cooperate.
This cooperation is an example
of how you can make the supply
and demand thing work according to Ben. “Trying to match what
the chicken will do to what the
store wants can be a nightmare,”
he said.
The chickens used for egg production are Bovans and Karen said
Bovans have been hybridized for
production and are very hardy. Ray
noted they are a very domicile bird
and easy to handle and Ben said
they can almost be a pest, getting
under your feet.
The primary chicken for broilers is a Cornish cross.
All of the Cooks’ chickens are
purchased as chicks. Ben said this
is part of the organic end of it. In
order for the chicks to be certified you have to buy them as baby
chicks. Their first meal is supposed
to be organic.
When they receive the chicks
they are usually two days old and
are shipped through the postal
service. Ben said they (Post Office)
will call us up and say you want
to come and get these chirping
things.
The Cooks have changed their
chickens generally every year. Part
of the reason is that they have
them from baby chicks versus getting them in at 16-weeks old and
already laying.
According to Ray, a good egg
layer will produce quality eggs for
at least two years. From then on
the eggshell deteriorates and they
tend to lay uneven eggs and in less
number.
When the layers are done they
are sold as spent hens.
Currently the Cooks are supplying eggs to six stores in Sioux Falls,
Edgerton, Adrian and Luverne.

Poultry Co-op, Ray said that as far
as he can see there is no limit to
what we can do and Karen noted
that there is a movement and if
that movement continues-consumer driven-then it will continue,
but if the consumers say no—then
the movement will end.
Hage Oil popular food stop
anytime during the day

With a history that goes back some 60 years
in Lakefield, Hage Oil is a business that has
expanded, grown in services and even changed
locations. But it has remained a favorite stop for
just about everyone from local residents to visiting tourists, farmers and factory workers, too.
DeAnn Russenberger, a two-year employee
of Hage Oil and now manager of both the convenience store and the deli said while the Hage
Oil name stretches back six decades, the current
location is relatively new. “Hage Oil moved here
in December of 1989 after being located downtown on Main Street next to Bowler’s Inn for a
very long time,” she said. “The Hage family has
owned both businesses all these years.”
In the convenience store/deli portion of the
business 10 people are employed working various
shifts. That’s because the business is open seven
days a week 5:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. “The only day
we are closed is Christmas,” Russenberger said.
And Hage Oil offers through their deli a large
variety of food items, most popular of which
are their sub sandwiches. “We have a nice variety of hot and cold subs we make right here,”
Russenberger said. “We also sell fresh hot dogs,
brats and polish sausages, offer a variety of other
hot sandwiches, soups and pizzas.”
But that’s not all. Hage Oil has fresh doughnuts and sweet rolls delivered from the local
bakery daily and muffins and sandwiches from
Deli Express. “We provide anywhere from three
to seven pizzas for their parties each time at
Bowler’s Inn, too,” Russenberger added. “But our
most popular food items right now are our cold
deluxe subs and our hot Philly cheese subs or
chicken deluxe ones.”
Hage’s taco salads are a customer favorite as
well. Hage Oil is a popular stop for coffee lovers and has a group of regulars who make stops
daily to enjoy a hot cup of java or cappuccino.
“Dewayne opens our business everyday at 5:30
a.m. And most of the time people are waiting to
get in for a cup of coffee. The coffee crowd starts
showing up then and they keep us pretty busy
until 10 or 10:30 in the morning,” Russenberger
said. “Then again from 1:30 until about 4 in the
afternoon we have our regular coffee crowd stop
by. They make our day and some of the stories
they tell are really pretty good. They like to talk
about the old times and the wars or politics.”
According to Russenberger, customers are a
mix of people from tourists, construction workers and farmers in the spring, summer and fall to
factory workers and a lot of community people
year around who stop by for a variety of things. “Hage Oil is a popular place because the Hage
family are caring, concerned people who want to
help the community,” Russenberger said. “They
are family oriented. You couldn’t ask for a better
employer to work for.”
After more than a half-century as a Phillips
66 dealer, Hage Oil changed over to AmStar this
past year. That brought new signage and new
painting both inside and out, but what it didn’t
change was the great service and food items like
the pizzas and subs that keep people coming
back to Hage Oil for breakfast, lunch, dinner or
just conversation over a hot cup of coffee.
