Having played with jazz legends including Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman, he continues to astonish contemporary audiences with performances that are praised for their “vibrant” improvisation. The SNJO is privileged to welcome Benny as their special guest and together they will explore his jazz legacy and celebrate music that, like its author, defies the march of time. The ensemble will also play new compositions by Tord based on English translations of Sufi poetry as well as instrumental music. For the first time on stage, Tord will use subtle live electronics to add depth and new layers to the sensual minimalist of his work alongside Simin’s warm and vibrant vocal art. For his upcoming album on ECM Records, Tord Gustavsen turns his attention to interpretations of ancient Norwegian hymns. These tunes are, for him, his original and deepest ‘standards’ as a jazz musician, and the process was initiated by the inclusion of the hauntingly powerful version of Eg veit i himmerik ei borg (A Castle in Heaven) on his latest quartet release Extended Circle. "Gustavsen's tunes are hypnotically strong... masterpiece of the understated" (The Guardian) Tickets £18.50 (+ £1 transaction fee for entire booking if purchased via telephone, post or online) Website www.tordgustavsen.com Twitter @tordg Tord met Afghan-German vocalist Simin Tander – a rising star on the European jazz and world music scenes – in 2014, and their collaboration has developed since then.
