Booking Fees
For certain performances, the ticket price is
listed as being "+ booking fee". This is because
the event's promoter is selling tickets through
a variety of different outlets (eg Ticketmaster,
Ticketweb, etc) and each of those may charge
a different fee. Please note that the booking
fee is charged on each ticket on all transaction
types (ie postal, telephone, internet, in person).
We are obliged to show these charges as
separate fees and apologise for any confusion
that this causes.

happening first, join us on any of
the services below:
Looking Good

Welcome to Night Vale is a twicemonthly podcast in the style of community
updates for the small desert town of
Night Vale, featuring local weather, news,
announcements from the Sheriff's Secret
Police, mysterious lights in the night sky,
dark hooded figures with unknowable
powers and cultural events. Its note-perfect
combination of Lynchian surreal, X-Files
paranoia and pitch-black comedy have
made Welcome to Night Vale a worldwide
phenomena and this Autumn sees the

Lessons from my
Grandfather
Fri 18 September, 7.30pm
Thu 24 September, 7.30pm
There are few working musicians whose
careers span the history of post-war jazz
quite as comprehensively as saxophonist,
composer and songwriter Benny Golson.
This remarkable man has been an important
figure in jazz for over six decades: a writer of
jazz standards, an author of film music and
a soloist of great finesse. Having played with
jazz legends including Dizzy Gillespie and
Benny Goodman, he continues to astonish
contemporary audiences with performances
that are praised for their “vibrant”
improvisation. The SNJO is privileged to
welcome Benny as their special guest and
together they will explore his jazz legacy and
celebrate music that, like its author, defies
the march of time.
A public talk and Q&A with Arun Gandhi,
Grandson of Mahatma Gandhi
Arun Gandhi is the 5th grandson of the
legendary Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi
and a peace activist, environmentalist,
author, journalist, speaker, agent of change
and proponent of non-violence who carries
and shares the wisdom and teachings of his
late grandfather around the world. He has
been part of a successful campaign banning
fracking in New York State and is an activist
in total nuclear disarmament.

Salt for Svanetia
Mon 5 October, doors open 7pm
Fri 9 October, 7.30pm
Plus special guests TBC
Moishe’s Bagel bring their exhilarating blend
of jazz inflected Eastern European and
klezmer music to create a new score for
Mikhail Kalatozov’s remarkable 1930 Soviet
propaganda silent film Salt for Svanetia
which recently took centre stage at the
Bo’Ness Hippfest. The evening will feature a
full set from the band followed by the film
screening after the interval.
London-based trio Bear’s Den create
music that dares to be both literate and
profound, while, crucially, remaining
universally accessible. Following their debut
album Islands and a sold-out European
tour, the band have released a short film
documenting the tour to coincide with the
release of their single Above The Clouds
of Pompeii which was nominated for a
prestigious Ivor Novello Award.
"With its quirky rhythms and off-kilter
harmonies, the music was a striking,
Prokofiev-meets-Nyman counterpart to
the bizarre images in Mikhail Kalatozov’s
remarkable film" (The Scotsman)

Miller Orchestra is preserved in some of the
most instantly recognizable and universally
loved melodies of all time. The Scottish
National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) brings Glenn
Miller’s marvellous music to spirited life with
genuine feeling and the deepest respect. Miller
was a composer who also dared to imagine.
His success came after a long wilderness
period as he searched for his own unique
sound. It was a sound that he carried in
his head and struggled to express, only to
triumph with music that has transcended the
passing of time.

Powerful horns, toe-tapping fiddle and
contagious rhythms characterise one of
Denmark’s leading folk bands Habadekuk.
With a vibrant mix of folk, rock, salsa and
big band jazz, the lively eight-man band
catapults old folk melodies into the 21st
century. Expect everything from wild polkas
and jigs to lyrical waltzes and rough n’
ready sailor songs in an unforgettable live
experience.
The all-girl Norwegian folk/pop four-piece
play 13 instruments and rip up the rule book
good and proper with their boundary defying
sound.
Their live shows evoke a Bavarian Beerhouse
hoedown and as testament to the band’s
egalitarian approach, all members swap
instruments and share vocal duties - singing
in English and often a cappella - with their
giant contrabass Balalaika in tow. Their
latest album Rockland is out now.
Taking its name from the residence of James
Hill, Tyneside’s most famous fiddler, Bottle
Bank Band is firmly rooted in, but by no
means limited to, the traditions of the North
East of England and brings together the
talents of four Tyneside fiddlers - Sophy Ball,
Chloe Jones, David Jones and Stewart Hardy.

Combining mastery with mischief, and
tradition with modernity, twin sisters Jennifer
and Hazel Wrigley are the multi-award
winning and internationally acclaimed fiddle
and guitar duo from the Orkney Islands.
The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc come from three
distinctively different Nordic regions. Kevin
Henderson (Fiddlers’ Bid/Session A9) hails
from Shetland, Olav Luksengard Mjelva is
an award winning fiddler from Norway and
Anders Hall is an acclaimed player from
the Swedish fiddle tradition. They skilfully
weave these three traditions together in an
atmospheric and dynamic fashion, all laced
through with liberal helpings of warmth and
humour.
-instrumentalists Iain MacFarlane &
Multi
Ingrid Henderson create a sound which is
reflective of the Lochaber area they grew
up in. Based mainly on harp and fiddle, they
combine rousing marches, jigs and reels with
poignant slow airs and Gaelic songs of love

Storm & Stress derives from the loose
translation of the German ‘Sturm und
Drang’ movement of the 18th century, where
passionate expression was given free rein
in literature, but also in music with works
by Haydn and Mozart at the forefront.
The Edinburgh Quartet performs a typical
Sturm und Drang work by Haydn alongside
masterworks inspired by extremes of
expression by Bartók and Grieg.
As part of Mr McFall’s Chamber’s 20th
birthday celebrations this year, the ensemble
dusts off a few old favourites at the same
time as presenting new work. The lineup includes a number of stellar guests clarinettist Maximiliano Martín, bassoonist
Peter Whelan, violinist Cyril Garac, pianist
Paul Harrison, percussionist Iain Sandilands
and drummer Stuart Brown.

2016 will mark the 20th anniversary of the
release of Gretchen Peter's first album, The
Secret Of Life, and her first UK tour, when
she performed in small venues to audiences
of 30 - 40 people. Since then she has gone

constantly throughout the world.

The soprano voice clearly inspired both Bach
and Handel, those two exact contemporaries
who were otherwise so different in
temperament. Both composers also shared
an interest in the instrumental concerto
genre, creating conversations between
bodies of different forces and profiling
various forms of instrumental melody.

“Wunderbar!”
Mike Stern is a multi-faceted guitarist who
has moved comfortably between jazzinformed rock, fierce fusion and straight
ahead jazz. He is strongly associated with
jazz chameleons such as bass legend Jaco
Pastorius, drum visionary Billy Cobham
and the ever-changing Miles Davis, but he’s
consistently maintained his own distinctive
voice among these strong personalities.

Tord Gustavsen: Hymns & Visions
with Simin Tander & Jarle Vespestad
Fri 4 March, 8pm
We're delighted to welcome back Norwegian
jazz pioneer Tord Gustavsen with an exciting
new project Hymns & Visions which features
Tord (piano, electronics), Simin Tander
(vocals), Jarle Vespestad (drums) and Daniel
Wold (sound design).
a selection of Norwegian traditional hymns
into Pashto, the mother-tongue of Simin’s
late father.
The ensemble will also play new
compositions by Tord based on English
translations of Sufi poetry as well as
instrumental music. For the first time on
stage, Tord will use subtle live electronics
to add depth and new layers to the sensual
minimalist of his work alongside Simin’s
warm and vibrant vocal art.
For his upcoming album on ECM Records,
Tord Gustavsen turns his attention to
interpretations of ancient Norwegian hymns.
These tunes are, for him, his original and
deepest ‘standards’ as a jazz musician, and
the process was initiated by the inclusion of
the hauntingly powerful version of Eg veit i
himmerik ei borg (A Castle in Heaven) on his
latest quartet release Extended Circle.
"Gustavsen's tunes are hypnotically strong...
masterpiece of the understated"
