Derby 101

Each team may have up to 5 players
on the track for each two-minute
Jam (1 pivot, 3 blockers and 1
jammer). The pivot (helmet with
the stripe) is the first player at the
starting line. She leads the team
during the jam. Blockers play both
offense and defense. They try to stop
the opposing jammer from scoring points
while getting their jammer through the pack.
The jammer (helmet with the star) begins at the 2nd starting line and begins
skating at the second whistle. The jammer must pass blockers from the
opposing team as quickly as possible. To become lead jammer, she must be
the first jammer to go through the pack with no penalties. The benefit of being
lead jammer is the ability to stop the jam at any time. After lapping the pack
once, the jammer scores one point for each blocker on the opposing team she
passes
legally

?Derby Did You
Know?
There is a special play called
“Passing the Star” which allows the
jammer to remove her helmet
panty and hand it off to the
pivot. The pivot then becomes
the jammer.

?Derby Did You Know?
Roller derby leagues are grassroots organizations – started by
skaters and run by skaters.
Lmbr Timber Onu #88
j
A member of our league, Lmbr Timber Onu was recently victim of a severe
domestic violence attack. Lori had surgery to repair broken eye sockets, nose
and cheek bones resulting in multiple pins, screws and titanium plate implants.
She faces a long recovery, mounting bills and loss of income. ECRD and many
other people are planning events and fundraisers to help.
