The Truro Music Festival was started in 1922 by Professor Harry Wellard and his assistants Miss Margaret McLean and Miss Lois Richardson. Prof. Wellard was organist at several Truro churches, taught music at the Nova Scotia Provincial Normal College, and was supervisor of music in Colchester County schools. He was devoted to music in the community, and was particularly interested in fostering its role in childhood education and development. His many achievements are honoured nearly a century later in the annual Truro Music Festival. The Festival quickly grew to include county schools and schoolaged soloists, and today includes musicians of all ages from the Colchester area and neighboring counties in Nova Scotia. The tradition has continued up to the present day, and the 2012 Festival was the 90th anniversary of this Truro institution. In fact, the Truro Music Festival is the third oldest competitive music festival in Canada, an achievement for which the community can be justifiably proud. Elisabet Astatkie 2016 MUSICAL PROGRAMS for our COMMUNITY The Cantabile Society’s programs include: Cantabile Singers, Cantabile Boys’ Choir, Spotlight Music Theatre and Choirs for Comfort. We are delighted to be a sponsor of the 2016 Truro Music Festival. The Cantabile Boys’ Choir is a community choir for boys aged 8 to voice change. The choir’s repertoire includes a wide variety of styles. For more information please call Chris Bowman at (902) 843-0983 or [email protected] Please note an exciting upcoming concert on March 5, 3:00 pm at First United featuring the Boys’ Choir, the Truro Youth Singers & alumni from both groups. The Spotlight Musical Theatre Summer School is designed for young people aged 10 to 18 who are interested in performing and adding to their theatrical experience. Past productions have included The Bean Tree, Seussical, Babes in Arms, The Wiz and Who We Are. This year’s camp will run for three weeks in July, with performances on July 21 - 23, and is still in the planning stages. Choirs for Comfort—Each February, the choirs of Truro are brought together for an afternoon of fun, fellowship and fundraising. Through Choirs for Comfort, the choral community has an opportunity to support local and international charities. To date, this popular event has raised funds for organizations such as the Food Bank, Doctors Without Borders, Maggie’s Place and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. This year (our 12th) we supported Colchester Community Workshops. The Cantabile Singers of Truro, the Society’s flagship program, now in its 34th season, provides eclectic concert programming for its audience in Truro and around the province. Please join us on Saturday April 30 for “Cantabile Does Jazz”. The concert will be at The Holiday Inn in Truro starting at 7:00 pm. Come listen to “groovy tunes” in a great gala atmosphere. For further information about any of these programs please contact our Artistic Director Chris Bowman at (902) 843-0983 or e-mail [email protected] page 16 2:10 pm 4105.05 - BAROQUE/CLASSICAL PIANO SOLO - RCM Grade 5 - Own Choice ____ 1.
